"So, where's Carrie?" Jessica asked as she drove Kelly home after work.
"Her mom doesn't want her out this late on a school night."
Jessica nodded, "Talked to Ashley?"
"Not since the other day. I wish she'd just tell me what was going on."
"You know, I wouldn't say that. Sometimes there are things that you may not want to hear."
"You know, huh?" Kelly frowned. "I think Carrie does too. She won't tell me, though."
"Don't be upset with her. She's being a good person by staying out of other people's business."
"I know," she nodded. "She really is a complete sweetheart."
"Y'all have become close."
"She needed a friend. I was the first person to talk to her."
"You're a complete sweetheart too, you know?"
"Not really. I had to talk to her. I was late for class, so the teacher made me show her around," Kelly shrugged.
Jessica laughed softly.
Kelly yawned, tiredly.
"So, um...the slumber party the other night..."
"What about it?"
"The kiss...weird, right?"
"It was just a kiss," Kelly replied, keeping her voice even.
"You? Just a kiss?"
"It's Carrie. I trust her. I don't see the need to make a big deal out of it."
"I'm not."
"Ashley tried to," she frowned, thinking back to the morning after. "Not really tried...just insinuated. You don't think she has a problem with two girls kissing, do you? I mean, it was all in fun."
"No, I'm pretty sure that's not it."
"Jebbie, you like Care, right? I mean, you don't have a problem with her, do you?"
"No, of course not. I think she's great. I'm glad she's hanging out with us, and starting to talk a little more."
"What do you think that Ashley has against her?"
"You think Ashley has something against her?" Jessica asked, curious as to what exactly was going on in the shorter girl's head.
"Yea, I mean, thinking about it, she's always bringing her up, and she never sounds happy about it. I don't get it. I hang out with Ashley more because that's what she said was bothering her, and it hasn't helped at all. Sometimes it seems to make it worse."
"Kelly, I don't know what to tell you.
Kelly sighed, "I think she's got it wrong. We don't need to spend more time together, what we need is a break from each other."
"I don't think that's the answer either," Jessica admitted, pulling the car to a stop in front of the apartment complex.
"Then what is?"
"You've got to get her to tell you the truth."
"But you just said I may not want to know the truth," Kelly pointed out.
"I know, but I think that's the only way to get her out of this funk."
Kelly folded her arms.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yea."
"How do you feel about Ashley?"
"She's my best friend," she shrugged.
"Like Carrie?"
Kelly furrowed her eyebrows in thought, "No, I don't know...Carrie's different."
"Different how?"
"I don't know, just different," she shrugged again.
Jessica nodded, studying her carefully, "Kelly, you know you can talk to me if you need to, right? Like if something's ever bothering you or confusing you...I'm here for you."
"Yea, I know," she looked at her confusedly.
"Just wanted to make sure."
"Ok then..."
Jessica laughed, "Go on, get out my car, you nerd."
Kelly smiled, undoing her seatbelt, "Thanks for the ride."
"No problem."
"Oh, hey, here," Kelly dug in one of her pockets pulling out a couple five dollar bills. "I had a good night in tips last night."
Jessica pushed her hand away.
"It's for gas," Kelly explained.
"Keep it. Use it to buy you a car so you can go to L.A. Then when you become mega-rich and famous, you can buy me a car."
"Deal," Kelly nodded, laughing softly as she got out the car.

Carrie sat silently on the piano stool beside her as Kelly's fingers ran over the keys slowly. She had found her in there while looking for her after softball practice. She didn't know what was going on in the Texan's mind as she hummed a melody that went along with the music she was playing, but she knew enough to know to not to make a sound and ruin the moment.
"I want to talk to Ashley," Kelly finally spoke, her fingers coming to a halt. "I'm tired of this nonsense."
"You sure?"
"Yes, either she tells me, or I just give up. There's no use for me to try so hard and to wear myself out, when she's not willing to do the same."
Carrie nodded.
"Can you give me a ride?"
"You want to talk to her now?"
Kelly nodded.
"Alright."
"Thanks," Kelly replied as they stood, gathering their bags.

"So...what's the plan?" Carrie asked as she parked her car in Ashley's driveway. "Should I wait here?"
"I don't know," Kelly admitted. "How long do you think this is going to take?"
Carrie shrugged.
"I'm staying at your place tonight?"
"That was the plan," she nodded.
"I'll just have Ashley drop me off."
"And if it doesn't go well?"
"I'll walk."
"Kell..."
"I'll call, then I'll walk. You can come pick me up."
Carrie frowned.
"I'll be fine," Kelly assured her.
"Ok," Carrie nodded, squeezing her arm gently.
"See you later."
"Good luck."
Kelly nodded as she got out of the car. She knocked on the front door, shifting nervously from foot to foot as she heard Carrie pull out of the driveway behind her, driving away. She looked up as Ashley answered the door. "Hey."
"How'd you get here?"
"Good to see you too."
Ashley frowned, stepping aside to let her in.

"So..." Ashley began as they sat in the living room, neither having spoken for nearly fifteen minutes. "What's up?"
"We need to talk."
"About?"
"About whatever it is you're not telling me, because I'm not going to keep playing this game, Ash."
"I don't know what you're talking about," she replied.
"Yes, you do. Jessica knows. Carrie knows. I want to know."
"Yea, well, Carrie needs to mind her own business. Did you know that she completely went off on me the other day for no reason?"
Kelly nodded, "Yes, I did, although it wasn't for no reason."
"Yea, well, she should still mind her own business..."
"Ashley," Kelly sighed, tiredly. "Please, just tell me...please?"
Ashley looked down at her hands that were folded in her lap, "I'm...well, I'm kinda, uh,...I'm gay."
"Gay?" Kelly repeated.
"Or bisexual, or straight and maybe this is the only girl I'll ever like, I don't know," she said quickly.
Kelly looked at her, confused.
"Kelly?"
"I don't know what to say. I just never thought..."
"How do you feel about that? I mean...you're totally disgusted, right?"
"What? No, of course not, Ash," Kelly shook her head. "You know me better than that. If anything, I'm hurt that you didn't tell me sooner. You know you can trust me with anything...why'd you ever doubt that?"
"Well, there's more, actually," she admitted.
"More?"
Ashley nodded.
"Like what?"
"It's you."
"What is?"
"The girl I like--it's you," Ashley turned to her nervously.
"Me?" Kelly sat frozen, her mind going a million miles a minute.
"Please say something," Ashley begged.
Kelly looked at her apologetically, "I...how do I respond to that? I don't want to hurt you."
Her head fell.
"Ash, you know I love you to death. I just don't see you that way. I'm sorry."
Ashley nodded.
"This doesn't change anything, right?" Kelly asked worriedly. "I mean, we can still be best friends, can't we?"
"Of course," Ashley replied softly. "It's no big deal...just a silly crush, really."
Kelly nodded, letting herself believe her even though she knew better, "So..."
"I've got to be getting ready for work," Ashley commented.
"Oh, ok," Kelly stood. "I'll just let myself out. See you at school, Monday?"
Ashley nodded.

Kelly folded her arms tightly around her chest as she walked down the sidewalk. The sun had already set, and the breeze sent goose bumps down her arms. She bit her bottom lip hard, trying not to think of the result that Ashley's confession would have on their friendship. She wanted more than anything to believe that nothing would change, but she didn't know how that was possible, and the thought of losing her best friend made her heart sink down to her toes.
She could feel the rain start to slowly fall from above, signaling the beginning of one of the rain storms that were so common during Texas nights. She allowed her eyes to tear up as she kept walking, the rain falling harder.
++++++++++
Carrie looked up from her notebook at the sound of something hitting her window other than rain. She raised an eye brow, climbing off her bed as it grew louder. She walked to the window, pulling up her shade. She quickly opened her window, pulling the shorter girl inside before closing the window back, "Kelly, what the heck? You're soaked. I told you to call me if you needed. And what are you doing climbing up to my window?"
"I figured you're Mom wouldn't be happy with me coming into her house all wet," she mumbled.
Carrie's heart sunk at the look on the other girl's face. "Come here," she reached out, pulling her into a hug.
Kelly sniffed as she folded into her, burying her face in her shoulder.
"It's going to be ok," Carrie assured her, holding her tightly.
Kelly shivered in her arms, moving more into to her to try and get warm.
"We need to get you changed," Carrie commented gently.
Kelly shook her head, not wanting her to let go.
"Come on," Carrie kissed her temple before guiding her to her bed. She got her to sit down while she hurried to the bathroom to get a towel for her. "Here, I'm gonna get you some pajamas."
Kelly took the towel, her shoulders slumping as she held it carefully in her hands.
"Kell?" Carrie asked, returning, noticing she hadn't moved.
"I think I just lost my best friend," she whispered.
"Baby..."
"I don't like her," Kelly shook her head. "And that hurt her."
"You can't help that."
She shivered again.
"Come on," Carrie encouraged. "Up."
Kelly raised her arms, allowing Carrie to take off her shirt.
Carrie wrapped the towel around her, doing her best to dry her off. She grabbed the t-shirt she had gotten for her, slipping it on her. She helped her shimmy out of her jeans before pulling on the pajama pants. "Better?"
Kelly nodded, blushing slightly.
Carrie struggled to be respectful and not dwell on the picture in her mind of Kelly sitting there without a shirt. She climbed onto the bed, leaning against the pillows. She pulled Kelly to her, and the Texan settled in between her legs, leaning back against her.
"Jebbie may have been right," Kelly said softly.
"About what?" Carrie asked, wrapping her arms around her stomach.
"Me being better off not knowing."
"Why do you say that?" she rested her chin on her shoulder, looking down with a smile at the feeling of Kelly playing with her fingers.
"How am I supposed to act around her now? I mean, is it still ok for me to hug her? Am I allowed to talk about people being hot in front of her? Do I just act like nothing's happened?"
"I don't know," Carrie said honestly.
"You suck at giving advice tonight."
"Sorry," Carrie couldn't help but laugh.
"It's ok," Kelly shook her head, linking their hands together. "You think I'm being selfish?"
"How so?"
"I'm complaining about how this is going to affect me, but this has got to be so much harder on Ashley."
"You are way too much of a sweetheart to be selfish," Carrie replied.
"I wish there were something I could do to make this easier."
"I don't think there is. Everybody goes through heartache at some part in their life. It's just how it is. You've just got to learn to get through it."
"I'm not looking forward to that."
"Yea."
Kelly sighed, "What am I supposed to do?"
"I don't know what you're supposed to do, but I'll tell you what you're going to do, because your hands are still freezing. You're going to get under the covers, and we'll pull the blankets up around us, and I'll hold you close so you can get warm. The possibility of you getting sick, especially with the way you run yourself ragged, is very high, and I'm not going to let that happen."
"Won't you get hot?" Kelly asked as they got under the covers.
"I'll survive," Carrie shrugged it off as she reached back turning off her light before she pulled her close, wrapping her arms around her securely. "God, you're toes are like ice."
"I wasn't born with a defrost button, you know," Kelly replied, her entire body shaking softly.
Carrie let out a deep breath, "Do you trust me?"
"Yes."
"Take your clothes off."
"What?"
"Leave your underwear and bra on, but take everything else off," Carrie instructed as she did the same. "Come on."
"But...I...your mom."
"The door's locked," she assured her. "Come on, trust me. I was in the girl scouts; we learned about this."
"Getting nekked?"
"No," Carrie laughed softly. "Body heat, and before you make another smart alleck comment, no we didn't practice this."
Kelly took a nervous breath.
"Kell, it's dark. I can barely see you, and we're both under a blanket, anyway," Carrie said gently.
Kelly nodded, as she took off her shirt, tossing it aside before doing the same with the pajama pants she had borrowed.
Carrie reached out, pulling her back to her. "Better?" she asked, her face flushed.
"Y-yea, actually," Kelly admitted, snuggling further into her, feeling as if Carrie's skin were on fire compared to her own.
"See, I totally know what I'm talking about," Carrie nodded, rubbing Kelly's back, trying to help to warm her up.
"Yea, should've known, I mean you do have a lot of experience with nudity, so..."
"What happened to no more smart alleck comments?"
"I thought it was for just the one time," Kelly replied, burying her face into the other blonde's neck. "God, you are so warm."
"Yea, that's what happens when you don't play outside in the rain...go figure."
Kelly laughed, "Yea, yea."
