Chapter 34 Hold on…we’re coming
Vin tried to make sense of everything that Chris was saying. He listened to him as he watched Eric try to calm Raven. Vin had never seen her like this, she wasn’t just upset, she wasn’t just crying, she was screaming like someone possessed. Eric was sitting on the floor with her between his legs holding on to her arms to keep her from hurting herself, rocking her back and forth while he gently whispered something in Lakota in her ear.
The long and short of it was that there had been an accident, if you could ever call a drunk behind the wheel an accident. Craig had been hit coming out of the student union building and he was in grave condition. Regrettably all Raven heard on the phone was “drunk driver” and Craig’s name. It immediately took her back to the day her parents died. Eric was trying to calm her enough to assure her that Craig was still alive. Vin listened intently on the phone as Chris recited a list of injuries and complications that were too much for him to fathom.
“Chris, hold on a minute…I’m gonna put Eric on,” then Vin did something he didn’t think he would ever have done; he turned to Eric for help. Quietly now he knelt beside them on the floor and handed him the phone.
“Eric…here, talk to Chris, he’s got all the medical info on Craig and I can’t make heads or tails of it…”
Looking then at Raven who was now almost catatonic with shock, he said softly, “I’ll take her…”
The two men traded places, Eric taking the phone and getting all the details on Craig’s injuries, as Vin lifted Raven from the floor and carried her to the sofa. Sitting quietly now, he rocked Raven in his arms…promising her that it would be all right, that whatever it took, he would make it all right. As Eric listened on the phone he watched Vin closely. The pain on Raven’s face seemed to be echoed on Vin’s.
“He does love her,” he thought to himself as he took down the information from Chris.
“Try to get some rest” Eric said, "we’ll be there soon.” Then hanging up the phone he motioned for Vin to step to the side with him.
“Craig’s in bad shape, none of his injuries is particularly life threatening, but in combination…it’s not good, it’s a lot of strain on his heart.” “He’s lost a lot of blood and he’s very weak” ‘We need to get to North Carolina as fast as we can.”
Vin moved to the phone and called the airport, “I need to get a charter flight,” he said to the voice on the other end of the receiver…. “Where?” Durham, North Carolina,” he said as he looked at his watch. Then looking up at Eric, “Passengers?” “Three.”
While Vin took care of the transportation Eric pulled out his cell phone and called home, it was Jarod who answered the phone.
“I need you to throw some things in a bag for me, enough for 4 or 5 days, bring me that and my black bag over to Raven’s.”
“Your doctor bag? “Ohhh Ric, man, what did you do to him?”
“I didn’t do anything, don’t be ridiculous, there’s been an accident and…never mind, I’ll tell you when you get here, just hurry and don’t forget my bag.”
Almost twenty minutes had passed and Vin was still arguing with the airline.
“What do you mean you don’t have anything that you can let me have…? Either you have a plane or you don’t, which is it? Vin’s anger was coming to a head. As he argued with the reservationist, Jarod, Devon, Aaron and Standing Elk came through the front door.
Eric spoke first as they walked in the door. “Pop, you didn’t have to come all the way out here.”
“Of course I did, Jarod made it sound as if you were in trouble.” Then looking at the distraught Raven he said, “but I see that it’s chunkshi who needs my help…”
The elder Andrews moved slowly across the room and sat beside Raven on the sofa, taking her hand in his and placing an arm around her shoulder, he gave her a new place to share her grief.
As Vin continued to argue with the charter service Aaron listened intently then moved to the phone and motioned to Vin to cover the receiver.
“Who are you talking to?”
Vin answered, “Fairwinds Charter.”
Motioning to Vin he said, “Give me the phone.” “Hello, Anita?” “Anita this is Aaron Andrews, yes, hi to you too hon. Look Anita we’ve got a medical emergency here, Raven and Ric have got to get to Durham, North Carolina as soon as possible, no…no that really was him….yes, Mr. Diesel will be taking care of the arrangements okay?” “Okay…thanks hon…”
As he handed the receiver back to Vin he said, “The plane’s all yours.”
“How did you do that, she swore she didn’t have anything available?”
“Well ya just gotta know Anita; first off, she didn’t believe it was you…Anita doesn’t believe anything unless she can see it right in front of her.”
Devon quickly added “and it doesn’t hurt if she’s had a crush on you since college.” Aaron paused blushing, “she’s always sorta had a thing for me.”
Taking his medical bag from Jarod, Eric began to prepare a hypodermic.
“What’s that?” Vin asked protectively.
“I’m just giving her a light sedative, she needs to rest it’s not good for her to continue like this, if we don’t calm her down we’re going to have two patients to deal with when we get to Durham.”
Vin nodded in agreement and headed towards the stairs, “I’m gonna pack her things, the plane will be ready within the hour.”
He bounded upstairs and pulled out her luggage. As he began to pack her things, his mind went back to just an hour ago, when he was packing his bag and preparing to leave for good. As he folded her lingerie into the bag he couldn’t get his mind off what happened. He still couldn’t believe that she would do something like that to him, but that was of no consequence now, now she was in pain and she needed him more than she ever had before, and whether he was angry with her or not, he wasn’t going to let her down, he owed her that much. As he placed her clothes in the suitcase he heard the bedroom door close, he turned to see Eric standing behind him.
“Look man,” Vin said, “I don’t wanna beef with you okay?” “Right now I think we both have more important things to worry about.”
“I agree.” “But I didn’t come up here to argue with you.”
“Then why are you here?” Vin asked, worry and fatigue covering his face.
“I was watching you with her earlier.”
“Yeah?” “So?” Vin said as he continued packing.
“Sooo, you really do love her.”
Vin slammed the half packed suitcase closed, “Yeah, I did.”
“Past tense?”
“What does it matter to you, you got what you wanted…just remember, if she did it to me, she may just do it to you.”
“What are you talking about?” “Did what to you?”
Vin had had just about enough of this interrogation. “Okay, you wanna hear me say it?” “Will that make the victory complete for you?” “All right.” “She lied to me.” “She lied to me and she cheated on me with you.” “She got up out of my bed….and went to you.” “Satisfied?”
Eric stood there speechless; it was obvious that Vin was under the impression that something had gone on between him and Raven. He was so convinced of it that he was ready to pack and leave. Eric was about to set him straight when Devon knocked and opened the door.
“Pop needs to see the two of you downstairs.”
“We’ll be right down,” Eric responded. As Devon closed the door, he turned back to Vin.
“So you’ve got it all figured out?”
“It didn’t take much figuring.”
“Humm, and what did Raven have to say to all this?”
“You don’t really think I’m going to give her the chance to lie to me again do you?” “No, she’s made her choice, I’m gonna see her through this thing with Craig…cause I…” he paused picturing Craig’s face, “cause I owe her that, then I’m outta here.” ”From this point on she’s your concern, I’m just here to see about Craig.” “You better go see what your dad wants, I’ll be down as soon as I finish with her bags.”
Eric turned and headed slowly down the stairs. His problem was solved, all he had to do was keep his mouth shut and he would be rid of Vin Diesel, he didn’t have to say anything bad about him, he didn’t have to point out his short comings, all he had to do was be silent. Be silent and have everything you’ve ever wanted…an interesting dilemma…for an honorable man.
