Kate's knee started to bounce as she sat next to Kelly on the sofa, watching Kelly's eyes scan back and forth over another contract. She had been buried in paper work ever since they arrived in L.A. a few days before. Kate took a deep breath when Kelly started to chew on her bottom lip. She reached out, placing her hands on the Texan's hips, and pulled her sideways onto her lap. She smiled with satisfaction when Kelly raised her arms a little, allowing her to wrap her own around the shorter girl.
"Did you need something?" Kelly asked as she turned the page.
"No, this is good."
Kelly nodded before groaning in frustration as she tossed the contract onto the coffee table.
"You ok?"
"Just tired of dealing with this mess. I'm not...I'm not a business person. All I want to do is sing."
"You can sing for me if you want," Kate offered.
Kelly laughed softly as she patted the blonde's cheek absentmindedly.
"You should take a break for a little while."
"I don't have time to."
"You mean to tell me that if you take an hour off to keep yourself from going crosseyed from reading all of those, then your entire career is going to go up in flames?"
"Yes," Kelly replied before giggling.
Kate smiled.
"I'm sorry I haven't been much fun lately," she turned to her, apologetically.
"No, it's ok, I'm fine. That's not what I meant--"
"It's just...L.A. does this to me. It just stresses me out. I don't want to be out there because out there is crazy, so I'm stuck in here, and in here I'm surrounded by my own crazy."
Kate laughed.
"I'm sorry," Kelly pouted softly, her thumb brushing along the taller girl's jaw.
"Don't apologize for doing your job," Kate shook her head. "It's kind of an important one, you know? So many other people's careers depend on yours, so I'm not complaining at all. I didn't want you to take a break for me, I wanted you to take one for you. It might help to clear your head for a bit."
"I went eat last night with Reba and Narvel and Jason."
"Yea, I heard you had a little trouble getting into your car after."
"Yea," she smiled.
"What are Reba and Narvel doing here?"
"They have a house here. They're always back and forth with business and stuff."
"Did y'all have fun?"
Kelly nodded.
"What happened?" Kate asked knowingly.
Kelly sighed, "Narvel officially threw his name in to be my new manager."
"Oh...well, that's good, right? I mean, you get along great with them."
"Yea, and I'm afraid going into business with them is going to screw that up."
"Or it could make it so much better. Narvel knows you. He knows it's just about the music with you. He's not gonna push you into being someone you don't want to be."
"Yea..."
Kate frowned, "Wanna tell me what's bothering you?"
"It just makes the decision so much harder now. I don't want to pick Narvel just because I'm friends with them. I want to pick whoever is best for the job. And if it's not Narvel, how do I tell him that?"
"He's a businessman. He'll understand," Kate replied gently.
Kelly could feel the tears forming in her eyes as Kate's lips pressed against her temple.
"Shh..." Kate soothed. "It's ok. Don't stress yourself out about this."
"I'm tired."
"I know."
"I can't do this all by myself. I need a manager."
"And you're going to find one," she assured.
"What if I find the wrong one?"
"You won't, ok? This is totally different than last time. You're a little older now. You're a lot smarter when it comes to this industry. You know what you're looking for--you're going to be just fine, ok?"
"Ok," Kelly nodded, sniffing back more tears.
"Something else is bothering you too, right?"
"Yea..."
"Wanna talk about it?"
"They don't know."
"Who doesn't know what?"
"Reba and Narvel...well, none of them do...but Reba and Narvel don't know I'm gay."
"They don't?"
Kelly shook her head.
"And you're afraid to tell them?"
She nodded.
"And you think if you hire Narvel then you'll have to tell them?"
"Yea."
"Why are you afraid?"
"Because I'm stupid."
"You're not stupid," Kate laughed softly.
"Ok, then I'm a chicken."
"You're not a chicken either, now what's making you think they wouldn't be ok with it?"
"Who says I think they won't be ok with it?"
"Why else would you be scared?"
"Because I've been lying to them the past couple years."
"Unless they asked you if you were gay, and you said no, then you haven't been lying to them. They were just assuming you were straight, and you know what happens when you assume..."
Kelly gave a small smile.
Kate kissed her hair, "What makes you think they won't be ok with it?"
"She's a country singer."
"Wow, way to stereotype," Kate teased playfully. "Carrie's a country singer, and she's fine with it."
"Carrie is about as country as I am heavy metal."
Kate giggled, "Yea, she is kinda more on the pop side."
"Don't tell her that though. She'll get upset."
"Yea?"
"Yea, for the Thanksgiving Day game last year, her album had like just come out, and I bought it for my mom to listen to since we'd be spending the day with her. Well, naturally one of the first things out of my mom's mouth when I introduced her to Carrie was something about how she had listened to her album and that she loved that Carrie had finally decided to convert to pop because her songs were so much better suited for that than country."
"Oh no..."
"Poor girl...I seriously thought she was going to cry."
Kate laughed, "I can about imagine."
"My mom is the queen of putting her foot in her mouth," Kelly smiled softly, resting her head on Kate's shoulder.
"Take a break," Kate urged in a whisper as she turned her head so that her lips were grazing the Texan's forehead.
"I took one last night."
"Last night was business."
"It wasn't supposed to be."
"Are you upset they blindsided you with that?"
"It wasn't totally blindsiding. I mean, Narvel had dropped a few hints that he was interested, so I knew it was coming. The timing just sucked. I really needed just a nice dinner so I could relax and take a break."
"Let me take you out to dinner tonight," Kate suggested. "I promise I won't offer to be your manager."
Kelly let out a quiet giggle, "Pinky swear?"
"Pinky swear," Kate linked her pinky with Kelly's. "So where do you want to go?"
"Anywhere you want is fine."
"If I pick, do I get to pay?"
"Are you picking Taco Bell?"
"No."
"Then no."
"Kell...I have money, you know."
"I know," Kelly rubbed her arm as she snuggled into her neck. "And you should use it for something more important than the 'make Kelly's ass even larger fund'."
Kate sighed, frustratedly.
"I just like to treat my friends."
"When do I get to treat you?"
"Wear that hot dress Ashley told me you bought yesterday, and you'll be treating me like a queen."
Kate shook her head, blushing, "I really want to take you out tonight."
"You are."
"My treat?"
"I really don't like people paying for me, hun."
"Well, you know what? That's too damn bad because I'm paying, and that's final, got it?"
Kelly laughed, "Yes ma'am."
"Yea?"
"Yea, if it's that important to you, then sure."
Kate took a deep breath, "Good."
"That doesn't mean you're not gonna wear the hot dress, does it?" Kelly asked innocently.
++++++++++
"Give me that," Ashley demanded, pulling the contract from Kelly's hand and hitting her with it.
"What the hell, Ash?" Kelly looked up at her, confused.
"I did not make you beautiful for you to worry about work all night," Ashley replied. "Did you not hear the doorbell?"
"No," she shook her head.
"Well, there is an extremely cute blonde waiting for you."
Kelly smiled, tugging her heels that she had removed earlier back on before standing.
"Now first, yes, she's wearing the dress--"
Kelly's smile grew.
"--and second, don't you dare spend the entire night talking about work, got it? Nobody wants to talk about work on a...when they're having dinner."
"You know, each day that passes you get closer and closer to riding on the crazy train."
Ashley rolled her eyes, "Just behave and don't stay out too late. Y'all have the Tonight Show tomorrow."
"We're just going eat," Kelly replied, walking to the door. "We won't be long."
"Clueless..." Ashley laughed to herself as she walked back to her room.
"Weirdo," Kelly mumbled before opening the door.
"Hey," Kate smiled.
Kelly felt her breath catch.
"You, um...you look great," Kate nodded honestly.
"Yea, you...you look..." Kelly shook her head as she stared at her.
Kate giggled softly as she reached out, placing her fingers under the Texan's chin, tilting her head up, "Hi."
"Hi," Kelly smiled.
"I'm up here."
"Not my fault," Kelly pointed out. "You wore heels."
"They go with the dress."
"I like the dress," she nodded.
"Yea?"
"You look amazing," Kelly finally managed.
Kate let out a relieved breath.
"You ok?"
"Yea, I'm great," she smiled, offering her hand. "Ready to go?"
"Definitely," Kelly agreed, taking her hand. "So where are we going?"
"Um, the restaurant we went to when we went out with Jill and Meghan. You liked the food there, and I figured you'd want to go some place quiet where you won't be bothered by people so you can relax."
Kelly nodded.
"Is that ok? We can go somewhere's else if you want."
"No, no, it's perfect," Kelly assured, squeezing her hand before letting it go to get into the car.
Kate quickly reached forward, opening her door for her.
Kelly giggled, "Well, aren't you smooth."
Kate blushed, closing the door.

"Maybe you should've brought a jacket," Kelly suggested.
"I'm not cold," Kate shook her head as the waitor walked away after getting their wine order.
"Yea, well...the waiter needs to learn how to control his eyes," she mumbled.
Kate laughed, watching Kelly's fingers dance along the back of her hand absentmindedly as they sat across from each other. "So how's the apartment search going in Nashville?"
"Ugh," Kelly rolled her eyes. "Jay is so damn picky. I tried telling him that it was just a temporary thing. A six month lease, that's it. We don't need anything special, but at the rate he's going, I'm gonna find a house before he finds an apartment."
"What do you plan on doing with your place over here?"
"I'm gonna get rid of it and buy something with Ashley. She's always wanted to move here permanantly, and I'm gonna still have to come to L.A. every now and then for stuff, so it'd be nice to have a place to stay other than a hotel."
Kate nodded, "Yea, that's a good idea."
"I thought so too," Kelly smiled before looking down at the menu. "So what are you hungry for?"
"I-I'm not sure," Kate replied, her hand now laying on the table palm up as Kelly's nails ran along the inside of her wrist lightly.
"Didn't you have some sort of pasta thing last time?" Kelly asked, scanning through the menu, trying to find it.
"Yea," Kate took a careful breath.
"It was really good--are you hungry for something like that?"
"Um...I think so, yea..."
"You ok?" Kelly looked up at her curiously.
"Perfect," Kate gave a nervous laugh.
Kelly raised an eyebrow, "You sure?"
Kate nodded.
"Ok..." Kelly linked their fingers together.
Kate felt herself relaxing a little.
"So how are things with Jill and Meghan, anyway?"
"They're good. Jill hasn't told her yet."
"Does she plan to?"
"She says she does. She just keeps chickening out. I told her she has till the end of this weekend or I'm gonna tell her."
"Jill should really be the one to tell her."
"I know, but Meghan's one of my best friends, you know? I can't just not tell her."
Kelly nodded, her thumb soothing over the blonde's, "Yea."
"What about you? Do you know what you want?"
"I think I'm going to try the stuffed chicken. It looks good."
"Yea, it does."
"How do you think Meghan's gonna react?"
"I don't know," Kate sighed. "It's such a screwy situation because I know Jill likes her so much, you know? I really hope Meghan gives her another chance."
"Me too. If anyone ever deserved a second chance, it would definitely be Jill."
"If it were you, would you give her another chance."
Kelly frowned, "That's what sucks about having crappy relationships in your past--you could end up missing out on something great because you think you're being smart and learning from your mistakes."
"But don't you think that every relationship should be it's own entity? Like, you shouldn't let your past relationships affect your current one?"
"I do, but that's a lot easier said than done."
Kate nodded, "Yea."
"So...where the hell is our wine?" Kelly looked around. "It doesn't take that long to open a bottle and pour."
Kate giggled, tugging on her hand, "Shh."
"What?" she asked with a smile. "Our waiter needs to hurry up. He hasn't even taken our oders yet. I don't want you sitting here all hungry."
"I'm fine," Kate assured.
"I know," Kelly wiggled her eyebrows. "And I'm pretty sure that the waiter knows too."
"Shush," Kate laughed, blushing softly.
"You really do look beautiful tonight," Kelly's smile softened as she reached out, tucking a loose curl behind her ear, letting her fingers trail down her jaw before pulling back.
"Thank you," her blush deepened. "You look...you look pretty incredible yourself."
"I'd hope so. I totally overpay Ashley."
Kate laughed, shaking her head.
"Here he comes," Kelly sat up straight, watching Kate do the same as the waiter returned to the table with their drinks, surprised at how much they had been leaning towards each other to begin with.
+++++++++
"You take it," Kelly pushed the plate towards her.
"No, go ahead, it's yours," Kate laughed, pushing the last bite of the chocolate dessert back.
"Don't you think we've contributed enough to the 'make Kelly's ass even larger fund' for one night?" she grinned.
"Well, I happen to like your ass," Kate replied, scooping up the last bite on her spoon and holding it up to her.
Kelly shook her head, smiling as she took the bite, "Damn that's good..."
Kate giggled, pulling the black book containing the bill in it to her after the waiter placed it on the table.
Kelly clasped her hands together, pretending like she didn't notice.
"Does it really bother you that much?" Kate asked as she placed her card in the book before handing it back to the waiter.
"I'm fine," Kelly replied.
"I know," Kate grinned.
Kelly laughed loudly, "Nice."
Kate smiled, signing the bill as the waiter brought it back. She placed her card back in her wallet in her purse before turning to the Texan, "Ready?"
"Yea, let's kick this shit."
Kate laughed, shaking her head as they stood, "Can't take you anywhere..."
++++++++
"So, I had a lot of fun," Kelly noted as Kate walked with her to her door, their hands linked together.
"Yea?"
"Yea, I definitely needed this, so thank you."
"Anytime," Kate replied as they stopped in front of the door.
"Are you staying here tonight?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Oh, um, no...I told Jill I was going back there."
"Ok," Kelly nodded, as she unlocked the door.
"So, you, um, had a good time?"
"Yea," Kelly chuckled, turning back to her. "I had a great time."
"Do you...would you want to do this again sometime?"
"Yea, of course," Kelly shrugged.
"Cool."
"Cool," Kelly laughed softly, pulling her into a hug. "Drive safe, ok?"
"Ok...um, Kell?"
"Yep?"
"I just...I wanted tell you..." she swallowed hard.
"Yea?"
Kate shook her head, laughing at herself.
"You ok?" Kelly questioned, watching as the nervous look on her face was replaced with a smirk.
"I just wanted to tell you that I know you're looking for a manager right now, and I think that I would be perfect for the job."
"Shut up," Kelly pushed her playfully, laughing. "You totally suck, you know that?"
Kate giggled, pulling her back to her, wrapping her arms around her in a tight hug, "I'm glad you were able to forget about things for a while tonight."
"Me too," Kelly hugged her back just as tightly. "Thank you again."
"Anytime," Kate pulled back with a smile. "I mean it."
Kelly nodded, her eyes closing as Kate kissed her forehead softly.
"Sleep well," she whispered against her skin.
"You too," Kelly squeezed her arm gently, giving her one last smile before walking through the door, closing it behind her.
Kate sighed, rolling her eyes as she made her way back to her car, "I am such an idiot."
