Everlasting Love(Pt34)
The smile wavered a bit on Sav’s face as he took a small step backwards when the door slammed shut. “Um…maybe we should have called.
****
‘My head is playing tricks on me…it can’t be him.’ Joe told himself, staring at the closed door not moving a muscle when the bell rang again. 'It’s not him…it’s not him…I must be dreaming…that’s it…I’m dreaming, it can't be Rick.' all spun in his head.
****
Evelyn glanced at the dinning room door fully expecting Joe to walk back in after hearing the door slam.
“Must have been someone selling something.” Thomas commented upon hearing it too. “Dad doesn’t like it when they come to the door.”
“Then they are very persistent ringing the bell again.” Evelyn stood and left the room, again expecting to meet Joe in the hallway. Going up the foyer stairs, she saw him just standing there. “Who was it Joe?” she asked stopping beside him. Looking up at him, Evelyn noticed he was paler than he should be a look of disbelief and shock etched his face.
“Joe…” Evelyn placed her hand on his arm. “…what's wrong, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Joe continued to stare at the door.
****
Phil pushed his chair back, the laughter dyiny in his throat, he glanced at Rick and their eyes meet. “Something is wrong with Joe.” They both said at the same time. Rick was jumping from his chair, quickly following Phil.
****
“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.” Sav darted his eyes to the left.
“It was a great idea Rick.” Jack said and pushed the bell again. “Best birthday present Joe will ever get.”
“No, it…it was a bad idea, somebody should have called let them know we were coming.” Sav backed up a few more steps and started to turn around.
Malvin grabbed his arm to stop him. “You’re not leaving, get back here.” Guiding him back to the door as he lightly patted his shoulder. “Now you stand right there until he opens the door again.”
“Malvin, I think it was too big of a shock or Joe wouldn’t have slammed the door on us.”
“So, he’ll get over it.” Mal smiled and knocked on the door.
****
Phil and Rick flew up the stairs, to hear Evelyn swear at the knock on the door.
“Phil, something is wrong with Joe, he won’t answer me, just stands there. What caused him to be like this?”
”You get the door. Rick and I will take care of him.” Phil told her and stood right in front of Joe. “Hey Joe…” patting his cheek softly. “…snap out of it.
Evelyn spun toward the door as the bell rang yet again, she flung it open, ready to yell at the person that kept ringing and knocking. “Wha…!” her words died on a gasp.
“Evelyn…you’re as beautiful as ever.” Sav once again smiled upon seeing her. Shock clearly registered on her features.
Phil and Rick spun around when they heard that very familiar voice.
Sav leaned sideways to peer past Evelyn to see Phil and Rick staring back at him. “Hey guys…can we….um come in?”
Evelyn regained her composer and moved aside. “Com…come in.”
No one moved as Sav slowly made his way inside, leaning heavily on a cane. He glanced up several times to see Phil and Rick staring at him with mouths hanging open. Sav stopped at the top of the stairs.
“Um…I forgot about the stairs. I…I need a little help.”
Rick mentally shook himself, quickly moving to Sav’s left and taking his arm. “You look great Sav.” Then pulled him in for a tight embrace.
“You look much younger than when I saw you last. Decided to take the plunge uh? Sorry I couldn’t be here with you for that.”
“Don’t worry about that.” Rick said pulling a way. “I completely understand why you couldn’t.”
“You’ll have to tell me all about it later.” Sav told him as the two of them slowly went down the stairs. Stopping at the bottom, he looked up when he heard his name.
“Uncle Sav.” Forcing her feet to move Amber come forward, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Hiya Pumpkin.” Sav closed his eyes, breathing in her scent, finding it harder to hold back the emotions that threatened to spill out.
Amber pulled away, wiping the tears that rolled down her cheeks. “You look wonderful.”
“So do you.” He smiled and reached behind him with his free hand. “I…I um couldn’t go out shopping to uh…get you anything.” He held up a single deep yellow rose. “I hope this is good enough?”
Amber took the rose, just a bit of laughter danced on her breath, she hugged him again. “Having you home is the best gift you could ever bring me.”
“Hey sis, give the rest of us a chance.” Thomas blurted out, breaking them apart. “Great to see you Uncle Sav.” and quickly embraced him.
“Same to you Thomas.” Sav replied.
Kyle was right behind Thomas and embraced his father. “I was beginning to worry that you wouldn’t make it.” He whispered in his ear.
“I’ll tell you about it later.”
Jack, Malvin, Juliana, Miranda and Linsey all filed into the foyer, watching the family greet Sav. More hugs and introduction were made amongst the group. Evelyn made her way to Sav and embraced him in warm welcome. Miranda, who was on the verge of being 13, went over to Joe. He had turned around and watched everyone greet Sav, but hadn’t moved from his spot by the front door. She slipped her fingers in his and gave his arm a slight pull.
Joe turned his gaze away from Sav and looked down at her.
“Hi Uncle Joe. You don’t mind I call you that do you? Malvin said it would be ok.”
Joe just shook his head, then his eyes found Sav again. Fingers tightened around hers. Miranda followed his line of vision.
“He looks great doesn’t he?” Miranda gently pulled on his arm. “Go say hello. Rick has really missed you.” Pulling him forward, Miranda lead him over to where Sav was standing in the living room.
The entire time that Sav was hugging and talking to everyone, he kept glancing at Joe, waiting for him to get over his shock. His voice trailed off from talking to Phil, eyes locked on Joe as he came closer, led by Miranda.
Several feet separated them when Joe stopped in front of him. Still unable to say anything, Joe only stared at him.
Phil glanced back and forth between them, then to the girl standing beside Joe. “Miranda, we were just having some of Joe’s birthday cake. Would you like some?”
She smiled brightly. “Yes thank you.” She tugged on Joe’s arm again to get his attention. When he finally looked down at her, Miranda crooked her finger to get him to bend down to kiss his cheek. “I missed you too.”
Joe smiled and lightly touched her nose. “Me too.” He managed to say.
Phil took her hand and showed her to the kitchen, Miranda talking the whole way.
Joe straightened up, meeting Sav’s eyes again. “Th…this is um…a surp..”
“Happy Birthday Joe.” Making the first move, Sav closed the distance between them, with trembling hand, he reached up and lightly caressed his cheek.
Joe’s heart pounded hard against his chest from that light touch. Grabbing his hand, Joe brought it to his lips briefly before moving closer. Releasing his hand, he snaked his arm around Sav’s shoulder, the other went around his waist, pulling him the final distance, their bodies touched from thighs upward. Taking a deep breath Joe buried his head in the crook of Sav’s neck.
Sav in turn wrapped his free arm around Joe’s waist, he felt his lean frame start to trembling, heard the soft cry escape his lungs. Letting go of the cane, it thumped softly to the carpeted floor. Sav brought that arm up around Joe’s shoulder. He didn’t mind that Joe was squeezing to tight, the slight pain from his embrace was welcomed, to final be able to hold him, feel him this close again, was enough to banish that pain.
Mal took in the tender scene between them and glanced around at the people still in the room. “Lets give them some time alone everyone.” Mal told them softly and ushered them from the room. Smiling as he took one last look, he slid the door closed to the living room, giving them the privacy they needed.
“Joe….” Sav started, reluctantly moving to break apart. “..it..its starting to hurt a bit.”
Joe released his hold and leaned back to look at him. “I…I’m sorry, I didn’t…are you hurt?”
”No, just still a fragile that’s all.”
Joe stepped further away. “You look….put on a lot of weight an..and..”
Not thinking, Sav let go of Joe’s arm, swaying on his unsteady legs.
Joe reacted quickly to grab him around the waist again. “Whoa…hey are you alright?”
“I’m fine, maybe…just a little…my legs aren’t…” Sav lost his train of though when their eyes meet again. “…their not…strong enough to completely…” he noticed Joe’s eyes drop to his mouth. “…hold me..”
Seconds later their lips came together in a soft, gently kiss. Joe pushed his tongue against Sav’s seeking entrance to what awaited him. Slanting his head, Sav opened his mouth for him, tongues clashed together in a familiar dance.
Joe pulled away first, tracing his fingers along Sav’s face. “I can’t believe you’re actually here after all this time.”
“I wanted to come sooner, but Mal said I couldn’t. He didn’t think I could handle the trip.”
“How do you feel.” Joe asked worriedly.
“Better, now that I’ve seen you.” Sav saw the look in his eyes and quickly dropped his, playing with the button on Joe’s shirt. “Well maybe I am a bit tired, but it’s been worth it.”
Joe let go long enough, then held his arm. “You need to sit down then, can’t have you passing out on me when we have so much to catch up on.” Helping him to the couch, Joe stood above him. “Do you need anything, something to drink, are you cold, I can get a blanket, just ask and I’ll get it?”
Sav smiled, patted the cushion next to him. “The only thing I want is for you to sit right here.”
“Ok.” Joe carefully sat next to him, his leg bent so he was sitting sideways on the couch facing Sav, his arm lay across the back, his fingers automatically twisting in Sav’s hair.
Draping his arm over Joe’s knee, Sav chuckled.
“What?”
“Oh nothing really. I don’t know what we’re going to catch up on. We’ve been corresponding with each other every month.”
“True…we can just stare at each other then.”
Sav chuckled. “Or play with my hair.”
Joe snatched his hand away. “Oh sorry…habit.”
“What’d you stop for…I like it, always did?”
“It’s a bit…little awkward.”
“Awkward, how so?”
“Well, I’m still a little numb because you’re here an…and we haven’t seen each other in a long time…I had no…”
”Wasn’t awkward when you kissed me.”
”No..” Joe looked down at his leg to play with the hem of his jeans. “..it wasn’t…I did that on impulse.”
”Kiss me again Joe.” Sav waited for him to look up.
“I had no idea you were coming. I mean…I didn’t…couldn’t feel you at all, you are so close now and still I can’t.”
“You can’t…” Sav frowned and scratched his head. “…that’s weird.”
“You can’t feel me either can you?”
“No, now that you mention it. I don’t like it either.”
”Are we going to be able to have the bond we shared again?”
“I don’t know, until it’s safe for you…for us to share blood again. I guess we won’t have it back until then.”
“You mean we can’t share a blood kiss?”
“I’m still sick Joe, the poison is still there. I don’t want to take the chance of you getting sick from my blood. Yours probably wouldn’t sit well with me.”
”But you have taken some from Jack, you told me you did.”
”I did, but it wasn’t easy in the beginning, took me weeks to be able to hold all of it down.”
”Didn’t he take some from you in return?”
“No.”
“Juliana is the only one?”
Sav nodded his head.
“Oh.” Joe mumbled dropping his eyes down again. “Um..ho…how long are you staying? I mean…this isn’t just a visit and you’re going back there soon.”
“How long do you want me to stay?”
Joe looked up then. “Forever.”
Sav smiled and leaned closer, his lips barely touching his. “Forever sounds good to me.”
