When Night Falls(Pt34)
After Kyle’s first week of memorizing The Code, they had gone to the pub for a celebration of sorts and another lesson on how to control him self around mortals. As expected, Kyle was adjusting to his new way of life, learning what he needed to survive under everyone’s watchful eye. Being the lawyer that he was, he questioned everything, whether he already knew the answer or not. Leaving Kyle in Tiny’s capable hands at some point during the night of fun, Joe excused himself from the table after watching a tall brunet woman most of the night. They ducked into the deepest shadows. When Joe came back to the table an hour later, Kyle noticed the sexual satisfied look on his face and jabbed him in the side, Joe just shrugged it off as nothing.
Arriving home in the early morning hours, Kyle bid everyone a good night and went upstairs to his room to place a call to the States to talk to Beth. Joe talked to Phil and Gail about the night’s events before heading upstairs. He quietly slipped into the dimly lit master bedroom. With a quick glance at the bed where Sav was supposed to be sleeping, instead, heard him humming and splash of water and headed for the bathroom.
“Cutting it little close aren’t you?.” Sav smiled.
“I thought you were sleeping.” Joe replied leaning over to kiss him, then knelt on the floor beside the large claw foot bathtub. “I couldn’t sleep, not until you were home…so I thought I would take a nice hot bath.”
“With plenty of bubbles.” Joe stated looking at the mound of bubbles.
“I like bubbles.” Sav chuckled. “How did it go tonight?”
“Sit up and I’ll wash your back.” Joe told him and reached for the sponge. “Everything went fine. Kyle wasn’t tempted in the least, by all the warm, fresh blood at the pub.”
”He’s had good teachers. Just wish that I could have been more helpful in the beginning with his training.”
“He understood that you’re not well enough to do that yet.”
“His words or yours?” Sav raised his hand and blew the bubbles off.
“I don’t want you getting overly tired becau…”
”...because you won’t let me do anything.”
“That’s not what I was going to say.”
”I already know what you’re going to say and you worry way too much.”
“I have reason to worry. I don’t want you over doing it.”
”I’m fine.” Sav huffed. “How many more times do I have to say that?”
“It’s only been a couple of months and you’re not ready to do anything to strenuous.”
“Going up and down those blasted stairs is the most I do. How am I suppose to do anything for myself, you’re always doing it for me.”
“Sav come on. I can’t help how I feel…worrying about you is a hard habit to break…considering what you’ve been through over the years.”
“You should try really hard to break it Joe, because your constant worrying is suffocating me!”
“I don’t want to argue about this.” Joe grumbled running the sponge over his back. “It never leads to anything.”
”Neither do I...” Sav whispered looking down in the water. “I don’t want to get the third degrees of don’t do this…don’t to that...thank you very much…” Looking up at him, his voice softened more. “…or ‘not tonight Rick, you need to rest’ I’m getting tired from resting so much.”
Joe briefly met his eyes then looked away. Dipping the sponge down in the water, he brought it up and squeezed it over his arm. Sav dropped his eyes to the water, blowing out a frustrated breath.
“How was she?”
“She who?”
“The woman you met at the pub. I can smell her all over you.”
Joe shrugged. “She was alright.”
“At least somebody is getting some. All I ever get is ‘not tonight or it might be too much for you to handle. We haven’t even shared a blood kiss in month’s be-cause it may be too much for me.”
Joe held his tongue from voicing what he wanted to say. “You’re making your point very clear Sav.”
“Apparently not clear enough?”
Shifting position Joe started on his chest. “I know what you want.”
”What you going to do about it?”
“Right now….nothing.”
Sav looked at him and blew out another deep frustrated breath, soap bubbles danced in the gentle breeze. Silence stretched between them and Sav played with the bubbles.
“This shit is getting so old.” Joe commented a few minutes later.
“The sponge isn’t old.” Sav mumbled, cupping his hands together just above the water and squeezed them together. Water shot up, hitting Joe in the face. Sav stifled his laughter as Joe glared at him.
“That wasn’t funny.”
“Sorry.”
”I wasn’t talking about the sponge being old.”
“OK.”
“What I meant by ‘old’ is giving you a bath, feeding, dressing…carrying you everywhere, cleaning up after you since 1995 and it’s…
”1997.” Sav corrected him.
“…whatever…its 2068, I’m still doing it. It gets old and I’m sick of doing it.”
“Nobody asked you to.” Sav said running his finger just above the soap bubbles, making it look like a shark in the water. “You took it upon yourself every time, just like tonight. Its part of that suffocating me I mentioned.”
Scrubbing Sav’s back a few more seconds, Joe wet the sponge and began to vigorously scrub his chest again. “You’re like a child who can’t take of himself and I get stuck doing it.”
“Ow…you’re doing it to hard.” Sav flinched away from him. “What are you trying to do? Rub a few layers’ of skin off. Talk about my mood swings….look at yours.”
Tossing the sponge in the water with a splash, Joe stood up. “Well maybe you’re the reason for my mood swings.”
“Then why do you bother to take care of me all the time, if I’m the cause of your mood swings?” Sav whispered squeezing the water out of the sponge.
“Because I love you!” Joe shouted.
“I love you too Joe.” Sav looked up at him smiling. “Now, will you finish my chest and don’t scrub so hard. It really does hurt.” He held the sponge up waiting for him to take it.
Joe rolled his eyes and snatched the sponge from his hand. “Asshole.”
Sav cracked a grin. “You haven’t called me that in a long time.”
“Well, you are.” Joe replied leaning over the tub, getting ready to kneel back down.
Moving quickly, Sav grabbing him around the waist. Joe let out a startled yell as he was yanked from his feet to land in the tub. Water splashed over the sides onto the tiled floor.
Joe started to laugh after the initial shock of what Sav did wore off. “Oh that was real sneaky.”
“I want you to take a bath with me. It’s always fun doing it together...er before.” He leaned forward as his hand traveled down Joe’s jean clad thigh to dip beneath the water.
“I know what your idea of fun is and that doesn’t include cleaning up the mess when we’re done.” Joe grabbed his hand and pushed it away, but not before Sav could squeeze the slight bulge in his jeans.
“I’ll clean the mess up this time.” Sav snaked his hand under his shirt, then whispered close to his lips. “Part of taking care of me is in the big huge bed we share…or anywhere for that matter. I want that with you tonight.”
“It’s too soon for that, you’re not well enough.”
“I’m better then fine, don’t worry…” Sav trailed his lips over his jaw. “… it’s been months…” twirled his tongue on the sensitive place on his throat. “..and I feel great, better than great actually.”
Joe moaned softly. “I’m supposed to worry. Isn’t that my job?”
“Yes, but I thought you hated it.” Sav moved back along his jaw as his fingers unsnapped the button on his jeans, easing the zipper down.
“I do.”
“No you don’t.” He covered Joe’s mouth, slipping his tongue between his lips to sensually tangle with his.
Nick opened the door to see Joe in the tub with Sav. His legs dangled over the side and water all over the floor. “What’s going on in here?” Startled from his voice, Joe pushed Sav away. “He did it.”
“No I didn’t!”
“Yeah…I’m really going to…” Joe pulled himself together. Wiggling around, he grabbed the side of the tub and pulled himself out. “.. jump in the bathtub to get my clothes all wet!”
“They don’t have to be washed now.” Sav smiled up at Joe.
“You’re dripping on the floor.” Nick commented.
“So what!” Joe exclaimed, then stripped his clothes off, dropping them in a wet heap on the floor. “I didn’t realize you were a neat freak Nick.” He spun around, slipping on the wet floor as he did. Regaining his balance, he left the bathroom. “Ha, that rhymes…neat freak Nick…neat freak Nick…say that three times without messing up.” His voice faded into the other room.
Nick pulled the towels from the bar and dropped them on the floor to soak up the water. “Are you ready to get out?”
“I don’t need help. I can do it.” Sav pulled the plug and got on his knees, splashing water up to rinse the bubbles off. “Why does everyone hover over me? Especial you and Joe. I’m not a helpless child you know.”
“We just worry about you.”
“Well don’t.” Sav stepped out of the tub. “What do I have to do to make you and Joe understand that? Rent a plane and have one of those signs trailing behind it with big red letters ‘Rick Savage is fine’. Would that work?”
Nick clamped his mouth shut against what he wanted to say as Sav stood there with his arms held out to his side. Nick held the towel up for him. “That won’t be necessary.” His eyes traveled over his hard lean form. His pale, flawless skin held none of the trauma of a few months ago. Nick silently groaned at the site of him, then diverted his eyes elsewhere in the room.
“Something wrong?”
Nick cleared his throat. “This brings back some rather pleasant memories.”
“If memory serves me right...” Sav took the towel from him and started drying his chest. “…you took advantage of me.”
”You didn’t stop me either.” Nick stepped forward and took the towel, gently rubbing it over Sav’s chest to finish drying him.
“You didn’t give me a choice.”
“I gave you enough.”
“Is this going to be a repeat of that day?”
“If you want it to be.” Nick replied moving closer. Lightly kissing Sav’s inviting lips, at the same time maneuvering him to the wall.
“um…” Sav pulled away, stopping the downward motion of the towel. He looked to the door, hearing Joe grumbling about being wet. “N-not in here.”
Nick smiled softly, then kissed him again. He left the bathroom, stopping to watch Joe get ready for the day of sleep.
“What do you want Nick?” Joe asked flopping on his side of the bed.
“It’s not what I want…” He glanced at Sav as he entered the room, towel wrapped around his waist. “...but what someone else does.”
“You always want something, go find it somewhere else and get out of our room.” Joe tucked his feet under the blanket, fluffed the pillow and turned the light off on his side and lay down.
Nick chuckled softly and left the room, closing the door behind him.
Sav tossed the damp towel on the floor and slid in bed, reaching up he flipped the light off. Scooting closer to Joe, he stopped when he turned on his side, facing away, plopping his head back down with a huff.
Moving closer, Sav lightly ran his fingers down Joe’s arm and pressed his body against him. Kissing his shoulders as he slid his hand under the sheet to rest on his hip, then further down to lightly touch his groin. “I want you to...”
Joe stopped his hand, pushing it away. “I’m tired.”
Sav raised his gold rimmed eyes to look down at him. “You’ve done nothing but turn me down lately. What’s wrong?”
“I just said I was tired.”
Taking a deep breath, Sav finally lay down and stared at the ceiling. Twisting his fingers in the sheet, he wondered what was bothering Joe. He didn’t think it had anything to do with what he said earlier about taking care of him. ‘I’m not about to bother him and ask either. He would probably bit my head off.’ Sav thought. ‘He is obviously still mad about the tub incident or something else is bothering him.’ Joe shifted to his stomach, shoving his arms under the pillow.
Sav finally gave up of trying too sleep as the sun rose higher, brightening the room behind the tinted windows. Easing from the bed he grabbed his robe, putting it on as he went to the door.
Joe opened his eyes to watch him leave, not giving it a second thought as to where he was going, he turned his head the other way and finally drifted to sleep.
Hours later Sav was again staring up at the ceiling, a different one. Trying to bring his breathing under control and ignoring the aches in his muscles from their romp in bed. His body trembled as Nick moved down his chest, leaving a trail of feather light touches from his lips. Laying his head down on Sav’s stomach, he blew out a deep contented breath. Sav twined his fingers in Nick’s damp hair, smoothing it back from his face. Silence stretched between them for some time before Sav spoke what was on his mind.
“We’re growing apart.”
“We haven’t been closer since…”
”I wasn’t talking about us Nick, our relationship hasn’t changed…much. I was talking about Joe.”
“He does seem more on edge, distancing himself these days, but it has nothing to do with you.”
“Then what is it, if not me? Joe told me that he was tired of taking care of me, sick of doing it were just some of his words.”
“He did yell loud enough for the whole house to hear him say that he loves you.” Nick chuckled.
Sav shoved him off. “I’m serious Nick, we’re drifting apart. I bet that would make you very happy, because you know I would come to you.”
“Don’t you always come to me when you and Joe are having difficulties? Like tonight.”
Sav stared at him a moment, then flopped back down. “Yes.”
Nick scooted up and kissed him. “Joe is dealing with his anger.”
“Anger for what?”
“Thomas and Tracy. He really didn’t stop long enough to deal with losing them, now that you’re well on the road of recovery, he can.”
“I thought..I felt him, the anger...”
“He broke down once Richard…to grieve. Not to deal with the anger. So much anger built up over the past year with Armand. It’s hard to cleanse the mind and body of that.”
“You have manage to do that, so have I...well most of it anyway.”
“I learned how to compartmentalize it long ago, after a time, it just wasn’t there anymore.”
“That still doesn’t explain why we are drifting apart.”
“You can be so naive at times.” Nick chuckled.
Sav glared at him. “I guess your superior intellect is better than mine.”
“Of course!” Nick exclaimed as he reached for the sheets to pull over them.
Sav thought long and hard about what Nick was hinting at and couldn’t come up with anything. “Alright Mr. Know-it-all, tell me what’s wrong with Joe.”
“Nothing to tell really. Anger is a natural emotion after a loved ones death…the why’s, how’s and understanding it all. Joe went through the same thing with Rebecca. He’s pushing you away because…” Nick prepared himself for Sav’s reaction. “…he blames you for Thomas’ death and he’s jealous because Kyle is alive.”
He stared at him a moment taking in what he said. “uugg…” Sav bolted upright. “I fucking knew this would happen. I told Steve that Joe would blame me for Thomas and I couldn’t deal with the fact that I would see it in his eyes…feel it in our bond…forever. I knew I shouldn’t have come back! But Steve talked…they talked me into it.” Sav pulled his knees to his chest, wrapping his arms around them.
Nick sat up and gently messaged his shoulders. “Joe isn’t the only reason you came back. I’m sure Steve gave you other reasons.”
“Yes he did.” Sav raised his head and swiped the hair from his face.
“Give him a little space, he’ll come around, he usually does.”
“And what am I supposed to do until then?” Sav asked as he lay back down.
”We could go some where, just the two of us. Get away from Ireland for a while. Spend some much needed time together. We haven’t done that in a very long time.”
Sav saw the hopeful look in his eyes. “Where would we go?”
“Anywhere you want. Let me take care of you for while.” Nick hovered above him, gently brushing back the damp hair from his forehead.
“What about Kyle and his lessons…Crystal’s birthday? It’s coming up soon right?”
“We have plenty of time for traveling before that. Kyle is doing exceptional well. There are others he could turn to if he needs help.”
Sav looked away, twisting his fingers together. “I..I don’t know. Leaving Kyle right now may not be the best idea or Joe. Can I think about it first?”
“Take all the time you need. Just tell me when and I’ll make all the arrangements.” Nick titled his head upward, kissing him softly.
“OK.”
“Are you staying the day with me?”
“I suppose so.”
Nick smiled down at him. “I suppose you do.” Looking for any signs of tiredness in his eyes, Nick leaned forward and kissed him. “I’ll take full advantage of the day….and you.”
Sav watched him move down his chest, then darted his eyes to stare to the ceiling. Letting what Nick told him sink into his mind.
