Tori and Taylor were sitting by the pool one night, as they usually do. Taylor wrapped her arm around Tori and spoke first.
“So, your new album’s out. I was wondering how long it would be before you made a full-on gospel record.”
Tori shrugged, “I guess I waited for the same reason you and the band are probably waiting to make a full-on acoustic record.”
“Oh, don’t worry. It’s going to happen. And I just know you’re gonna pre-order that shit.”
“Of course. And I’m sure Ella will love it too.”
“She liked your album?”
“Yeah, why else would I be this happy?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?”
Tori paused for a few moments.
“We’re doing it on Sunday.”
Taylor smirked, “How fitting - on your knees, putting a man’s body in your mouth, asking to be filled with his love.”
When Taylor put it that way, Tori couldn’t help but giggle. Tori didn’t have a response to that, so she just talked about getting Ella’s opinion on her album. Ella has synesthesia, so her take on the album consisted in part of describing the colors she saw. Tori recounted everything that Ella told her, almost entirely word for word.
Ella ran a newsletter in the last resort, but when everyone moved to this one, she decided to scrap it. She did keep writing, obviously; her career kind of requires her to do so. Not to mention, her skills in songwriting and writing in general gave her an audience for her ever-evolving skills as a tastemaker. She was never especially hard to impress, but she would always be incredibly vocal whenever something really blew her mind. Incidentally, other women were the same with Ella. Tori, Camila, Florence, Kacy, Ariana, Lauren, Charli, and Vanessa were all fans of hers, and it meant a lot to them when Ella said she liked their work.
Taylor felt like it seemed to matter to Tori less what Ella said and more how Ella said it. But Taylor didn’t want to rain on Tori’s parade; she liked watching Tori talk, especially with this much enthusiasm. So she just sat there and occasionally nodded her head silently as Tori spoke, which turned out to not be as long as Taylor expected. Tori looked at Taylor after she finished speaking.
“So what did you think of the album?”
Taylor said nothing. The way the water reflected on Tori’s face and eyes made her glow like the moon itself.
“Tayl-”
“Can I kiss you, please?”
Tori’s eyebrows raised in slight surprise.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m sorry, Tori. I want to kiss you, but . . . you know . . . consent and all.”
Tori thought it over for a moment or two. She looked down at Taylor’s legs dangling off the edge and into the water, then reclaimed eye contact with Taylor.
“Move back a few inches.”
Taylor nodded and immediately moved away from the edge of the pool, sitting up straight with her legs outstretched. Tori straddled Taylor’s lap.
“Slowly, okay?”
Again, Taylor nodded. She held Tori’s cheeks in her hands and slowly brought their lips together, what felt to Taylor like a painfully long time passing until their lips met for a kiss that lasted about ten seconds. When they parted, Taylor moved her lips to Tori’s cheek, then down to her neck.
“So…,” Tori wondered aloud, “did I meet your expectations?”
Taylor stopped and said, “I’m not sure. Let me check.”
Quickly, Taylor went in for another kiss, this one lasting twice as long as the first one. When they finally parted, Taylor gave a nod and said, “I don’t ever wanna hear you talk about not being perfect ever again.”
Tori giggled, then went in for one more kiss.
