Winds of Destiny(Pt33)
After tearful goodbyes to Travis and Chelsea, another apology from Joe for ending their trip sooner than was scheduled. A promise of seeing them in a few months for Crystal’s 18th birthday party, with all expenses paid, everyone headed for the other side of the island. A fleet of Lear jets were lined up on the runway, waiting to take them to the African mainland to Lagos, Nigeria where their reserved hotel rooms were waiting.
Walking quietly beside Joe, Phil glanced at him then looked behind him to find Sav engrossed in a conversation with Crystal and Kyle.
“You had me worried for a few minutes tonight Joe.”
“’bout what?”
“How you rattled off to everyone.”
“It was something I had to do Phil…part of the healing processes.”
“Like a twelve step program.”
“You could say that.” Joe glanced at him and shrugged.
“Right…I understand that…I watched you the whole time and….”
“And what?” Joe prompted him to go on.
“I watched Sav too.” Phil looked at him to gauge his reaction, when he didn’t get one, he continued. “Every time you went to some one else and ignored him…he kept moving further and further away from the gathering. I could feel his sadness, his anguish that you didn’t approach him.”
Joe slowed his pace to look at him. “He did? I didn’t notice that. I intentionally saved going to him last. Saying what I did in front of everyone, giving his ring back was the entire reason we came here.”
“Really.” Phil raised his brow.
“Well, not the entire reason. I thought about getting the family together first, then it hit me…renew our commitment to each other, give Sav his ring back at the same time. I was going to give it to him when we got home…privately, but this was much better.”
“Were you afraid he wouldn’t accept it if you were alone together?”
“What…no! I wanted to renew our commitment…we’ve never done that in front of everyone…it felt really good.”
Phil smiled, remembering the different feelings he was getting from both men as they stood before them earlier. Joe was a bundle of nerves, an urge to shout at the top of his lungs the love he had for Sav, but kept it bottled until he said what needed to be said. He giggled thinking of how Sav felt standing there, wanting to hear what Joe had to say, but he also had the strong urge to bury himself in the sand.
“I thought Sav was going to sink in the sand from shyness.”
“Yeah…” Joe smiled. “He was shaking and very nervous. Doing that in front of everyone may have embarrassed him a bit, but it was worth it.”
“I will never figure out why he’s like that…he shouldn’t feel embarrassed or shy at all, we are family.”
Joe shrugged his shoulder. “Got me on that one Phil. I’ll never understand it either, but I love that side of him.”
“mmhumum…I know you do…well…on the other hand, I can’t think of any other couple that have problems like you and Sav do.”
“All relationships have problems Phil. Mine and Sav’s is no different then yours and Gail’s.”
“There is a big difference. Gail and I hardly ever fight, we’ve never separated, we don’t hurt each other…like you and Sav do…and we’re married.”
“Yeah, I see your point.” Joe stopped by the stairway and leaned back against the rail, staring at the ground. “We do that a lot, but I think it brings us closer, love each even more.”
“I don’t think it’s possible for you two to be closer and you ooze with love for each other already.” Phil smiled and patted his shoulder.
“Yeah.” Joe replied softly. “I did ask him to marry me.”
Phil tripped on the bottom step and grabbed the rail. “You did, when?”
Joe smiled softly from the memory of that night. “When we were staying with you and just before I left…that night we spent on the beach.”
“Right..right I remember now. You also got in a lot of trouble for the sand all over the floor, but you never mentioned the marry me part.”
“I didn’t feel the need to?”
“I want to hear that part of the night.”
Joe rolled his eyes. “OK…OK…it was prefect...a full moon barely above the water, gentle ocean breeze, the sound of the waves tugging at my mind…” Joe tilted his head at the memory of watching Sav on the waves. “He was in the water teaching him self how to body surf, I think he managed to stay on a few and ride the wave out. When he had enough he jogged through the surf splashing water up with his hands…” He dragged his hand through his hair and looked right at Phil. “It hit me again how very close I came to losing him…forever.”
“When he was sick?”
Joe nodded in reply and took a deep breath. “It felt like a vise was constricting my heart, my stomach just rolled right out across the sand and wh…when he dropped to his knees in front of me, blue eyes twinkling and that…smile…it disappeared, vanished.”
“I can’t say I felt the same as you did, but it was close.” Phil said and flopped down on the step. “Looks like we have a few more minutes while everyone decides what plane they want to fly in, so go ahead and finish.”
“Not much to tell really.” Joe looked to the ground again and shrugged his shoulder. “He wanted to dance, right there on the beach.”
“Slow.” Phil perked his brows.
Joe nodded. “We…or he was talking about how happy he was, I was thinking the same thing, about going home.”
“You guys were happy and very content while you stayed with us.”
“He said the same thing.” Joe chuckled. “Of course Nick just had to show up and ruin it. I shot off a sarcastic remark back at him for what he said. Sav thought it was funny at first, then got all serious on me, said something about me wanting something more with Nick.”
“Like what?” Phil prompted. “He already knew you slept with him.”
“His little mind is always in that mode Phil...I’m going to leave him for Nick…no chance in hell will that ever happen.”
“What made him think you were that night?”
“He thought about all the years that Nick and I always goad each other, little touches here and there that didn’t mean anything, they still don’t.”
“But you do love Nick.”
“Yeah, but I hate him too.”
“Right.” Phil dragged out with a smile.
“Anyway, during that little argument is when I asked him to marry me, just blurted it out.”
“What did he say?”
Neither man saw Sav until he slipped his arms around Joe’s waist and kissed him. “I turned him down.”
“Oh for pity sake Sav…” Phil shot to his feet. “…why did you turn him down!?”
“I don’t think I need to explain myself to you. I had my reasons.”
“Reasons that made sense to me.” Joe smiled, gently rubbing his back.
“I’m going to go with Kyle and Beth, spend some time with them. Are you going on this one with Phil?”
“Sure why not, we can catch up on studio business and I can have that talk with my daughter about getting married and why she didn’t tell us.”
“I’m sure Amber had her reasons, so go easy on her...and Scott.”
Joe groaned and squeezed his butt. “I’ll find you later.”
Sav leaned forward to kiss him again, dipping his tongue in for a quick taste before stepping back, he smiled and winked. “Later.”
Joe’s smile widen as he watched Sav walk away, the slight upward jerk of his hips when his foot hit the ground. “I still want to marry you.” He called out to his retreating back.
Sav quickly turned around to walk backwards, he spread his arms out. “You already have me forever Joe, getting married will not change that.”
Joe growled and Sav laughed. “Love his walk.”
Phil narrowed his eyes, then smacked Joe on the shoulder.
“Hey!” Joe rubbed his shoulder. “I ogle over him all the time, so don’t hit me again.”
“That’s not why I smacked you. Learn how to cut to the chase when telling a story. You didn’t have to add in everything, just the most important parts.” Phil grumbled, going up the stairs.
“You asked and were hanging on every word.” Joe laughed and followed him inside the plane.
