Chapter 34 : Countdown
I picked up Dad around 5PM the next day. He flipped when I told him on the ride home that Glenn and I were going to have a baby.
“What you gonna name it?”
“We don’t know what were having yet, Dad. Why?”
“Just wonderin’.”
I smiled, knowing slightly what was on his mind. “I already told Glenn if It is a girl her middle name will be Ruby for her grandmother. He agreed to it. Matt made me promise. You know me when I make a Promise I keep it.”
He nodded, starting to talk about things back home. He told me he had gone down to see the colt Glenn had bought and would bring up at the end of our honeymoon. “Fine little colt, steady, but got a lottta spirit to him. Might think of putting him to Gypsy a time or two.” He discussed the fact that Kerry, Dusty and Trey couldn’t make it to the wedding, all three in school and unable to get away for the middle of the week wedding. I already promised them they would get a copy of the wedding video and reception; pictures if they wanted them. They promised to come up and visit at some point duirng the summer. Since I wouldn’t be traveling with Glenn as much now, they could come up and stay after the summer session.
I got Dad settled and headed out as I thought about the way Vince had reacted. To him this was perfect timing. He said he would work it into the storyline, but I would not compete for at least a year. “With You aganist Matt right now, I think we can put this in somehow. We’ll let you know after your honeymoon.” He said would see us at the wedding, but reminded me that JR would need a copy of the confirmation of pregnancy as soon as we got back to work.
I went into the kitchen and out the back door, finding Glenn and his dad communing over the grill. His mom was going through stuff for the bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, and last minute stuff for the wedding.
“Faith. Dear, where do you want to go for the rehearsal dinner?”
“Some place with a lot of food.”
David laughed. “See already eating for two!”
I shook my head. “We’re going to have to feed all of those guys! A buffet would be your best bet. Let them eat their fill.”
She nodded, looking in the phone book. She pointed to a spot on the page. “Old Country Buffet? You sure?”
Glenn spoke, picking up his glass of water. He wasn’t allowed anything I wasn’t now, after his promise to be along for the ride. So his usual pre-barbeque beer was out of the question. “Mom, we don’t need to go any place fancy. So long as their fed they’ll be fine. Remember, this is the majority of the bigger guys on the roster. They will eat a lot. Besides, we’re all used to road food, eating at Denny’s at midnight and all that. We’ll be fine, all that rich food on Tuesday and theyll be sick for a week as it is.”
She laughed, and started to dial, telling them to expect us Monday night. She talked to the Manager, looking up to ask how many would be there.
“Let’s see, me, Glenn, You, David, Dad, Matt, Amy, Mattie, Moore, Jeff, Jess, Jeremy, Jenneca, Mark, Sara, Marcus, Curtis, Shane, Grandma Jacobs, Big Paul, Brock, John and Ron. And Mario’s dad, since he’s the minister. So… twenty four in all?”
“Twenty four?”
I nodded, picking up a steaming bit of vegatable from the plate Glenn was putting things from the grill on.
“Stop that.”
“I’m Hungry! Can’t the mother of your child eat a piece of a carrot if she’s hungry?” He nodded, handing me his glass of water.
“You can, but it’ll be ready in five minutes. Can you wait that Long?”
“Yeppers I can, but then I wouldn’t be bothering you, now would I?”
He smacked me on the ass and told me to go get my dad. I did, finding him in the living room, staring at the pictures of Glenn and the dogs that I had taken about this time last year. He pointed to a picture of Teke.
“I saw the coondog. What happened to that big grey he had?”
I dropped my head as I looked at the picture. “Teke was killed, a couple months ago. Glenn’s ex beat him to death.”
He looked at me like I grew another head. “What kind of woman beats a dog like that?”
“She’s gone crazy or something. We haven’t even heard from the arresting officer or anyone on what will happen to her. She broke in and tried to shoot me. I don’t worry about her anymore. I can’t afford to.”
He looked at me as we walked to the back door. “You can’t afford not to. You be careful Faith. Glenn isn’t around enough to protect you all of the time, and with that baby coming you can’t fight her like you did when you fought people at Union Pines. You protect yourself and that little one. Alright?”
I nooded, agreeing with him. If Myra did get out and come back I would have no way of protecting my child and myself. I made a mental note to make sure that shotgun was loaded.

We sat down to a good barbeque, with all the trimmings. Glenn is a pretty good cook, most men are if they’d only take the time. Dad knew the drill, offering to do the dishes. Catherine sent David to help him, saying the women and the groom were going to talk over the wedding with the groom.
When they came back we told them what we had decided about the giving away. I was going to have Dad and the boys give me to Glenn, Catherine and David would bring Glenn to be married to me.
David looked a bit confused. “This is definitely not a traditional wedding apparently. The Maid of Honor is a Man of Honor, the groom is being given away and it’s not even in a church.”
“Oh, David. Let them have what they want. It is their wedding. Let them have it.” Catherine, grabbing one of the chocolates Glenn was eating, looked sideways at her husband. “Ours wasn’t so traditional.”
“It was a military wedding. It was functional.”
I laughed as he saluted. As a retired Air Force officer, David was highly regimented but very laid back for someone with his background.
I excused myself as Glenn, Dad and David started getting the backyard fixed up for the wedding. I headed in, hearing the phone ring. I grabbed it as Glenn walked in, leaning against the table. I told him to hold on as I spoke.
“Hello. Jacobs residence.”
“Is this Mrs. Faith Jacobs?”
“May I ask who is calling?”
“Sargeant Martin Farmer, St. Louis Police Department.”
“This is she.”
“Mrs. Jacobs I am calling concerning Ms. Myra Walker-Jacobs.”
My eyes got wide and I waved Glenn over. He stepped to me, holding my shoulders as the officer and I spoke.
“Yes…”
“Ms. Walker was unable to make bail by her set indictment date and will be at trial on the 17th of May. A subpeona will be issued for you to be present as state’s witness. We are informing you at this time. Any questions you may have can be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office.”
He told me when and where I was expected to be, telling me when and what courtroom. As I hung up, I leaned against Glenn, closing my eyes in relief.
“What? What’s wrong honey…”
“She didn’t make bail. She’s going to trial.”
He looked at me funny then smiled. “She’s not getting out?”
“I have to testify against her in May. Said a subpeona is on the way.”
He picked me up and swung me around, extremelyExtremely happy. “She’s finally going away. We wont have to worry about her anymore!” He pulled me into a kiss, smiling into my lips.
The nightmare was half-over. I hope.

We got through the last days before the wedding, nearly exhausting ourselves in the process. I swear to the gods, theSwear to the Gods, The whole thing was going to drive me up the damned wall in the end. With the rehearsal, bridal shower, and last minute stuff, I was ready to nearly call the whole thing off the night before and suggest we just elope. I didn’t though, wanting more than anything to get it over with so Glenn and I could get on with our lives, together permanently.
Glenn was packing his stuff to go stay at his parents’ house for the night. He had decided to be the one to stay somewhere else, making it easier that he wouldn’t see me before the wedding, since it was in the backyard and my dress and train were a pain in the ass to lift. That and then he wouldn’t see me before the ceremony. His idea, not mine!
“Fay, where are my black shoes? They aren’t where I left them.” He pulled up the quilt on our bed from the floor, peering under the bed for them, growling at the fact he couldn’t find them.
“By the door. When will you be here tommorrow?”
He picked up his shoes, sticking them in his bag as he turned to me. “Around 12:00. Don’t worry, I will be at the end of the aisle waiting.”
I nodded, grabbing him around the waist. “I’m not worried about that. I’m just nervous.” I looked up at him, watching him smile at me.
“What’s your problem?”
He shook his head. “Not a thing.” He ran his hand over my cheek, looking down at me. I have never seen anyone’s eyes so full of emotion in my life. “It’s just. I dunno. Everything is catching up to me. I’m kinda in shock I guess.”
I wrapped my arms up around his shoulders and shook my head. “In shock about what?”
“The fact you said yes. That you actually want to marry me. You want to have a family with me. The fact I’ll be a father by Christmas. Tommorrow, I’ll get to see you in a wedding dress and say I do. Everything I’ve hoped for so far in life is coming true. I don’t think I could be any happier.”
I leaned into him and smiled, feeling him bow his head onto my shoulder as he held me. “Not bad having all your dreams come true, huh, Big Guy?”
He kissed me lightly on the ear, his hands pulling me into a tighter hug. “Not a bad feeling at all Little Sunshine. Who would have thought Matt and Jeff’s kid sister would want to be with my crazy ass?”
“Just Matt and Jeff’s kid sister huh? I’m more than that, ya pain in the ass. Tommorrow I’ll be Mrs. Glenn Jacobs, and around November, mother to your child.” I smiled. “I don’t think I could ask for more.”
I leaned up and kissed his lips, knowing his parents were expecting him in a half an hour. He was staying with them for the night, coming home and getting ready for the wedding, along with the rest of the male part of the wedding party, around noon. They would get ready in the downstairs bedroom, the girls and I would be upstairs in our room.
Catherine had told me Glenn would be sleeping in his old bedroom for the night and I felt sorry for him. See, he has been used to sleeping in an extra long king size bed, with plenty of room for him and I. Its about ten by ten and he had it especially made so he could be comfortable, and the sucker is damn comfortable. His old bed is a simple short twin, about six feet long and two and a half feet across. Him being 6’ 10’’ means everything from about mid-calf or so down is gonna be hanging off the end of this little bed. Now Imagine big ol’ Kane hangin off a twin size bed, sawing the proverbial log as it were. Do you also see the humor in this situation?
Hell, I thought It was funny.
And yes, he does snore.
He left for the night, taking his cell phone with him. Even with Dad and Mark staying at the house, he was anxious something might happen. I kept telling him he was being paranoid. He told me he wasn’t. “I’m protecting my wife and child. It’s not paranoia, it’s thinking ahead.” He gave instructions to Mark to make sure the house was locked up after he left. Mark, loyal friend and Best Man, took him at his word and had that alarm on as soon as Glenn pulled out of the driveway.
Paranoid!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A little before midnight, I was in the kitchen, staring out the window and trying to zone out so I could sleep. I was too used to going to bed early in the morning to go to sleep before one. I turned away from the window when I heard heavy steps behind me.
“Hey Mark.”
“Hey Fay.”
I looked at him sideways as he sat down at the table with me. His brow furrowed and he asked me what ‘that look was for’.
“You’ve never called me Fay. Always Faith or little darlin’ or bitch, depending on your mood. Or my mood.”
He nodded, looking out at backyard where everything was set up for the wedding. He stared at it for a while before he spoke, not looking at me.
“I just wanted to say, I’m sorry, about back in March.”
I turned my head from him. I barely wanted to remember that night. The only good thing about it was that Glenn and I had traced it back as the night we had concieved. For a bit, Glenn was scared the baby was Mark’s, untilI reminded him Mark hadn’t got to do anything that would have gotten me pregnant by him, we used enough spermicide. It was only after it had worn off and Glenn had cleaned me up, that we had done the deed. There was a possibility the baby would be Mark’s but the chances were slim, the odds were stacked against it.
“Don’t worry about it. Just don’t, OK?”
He shook his head as he turned to me. “I can’t. I have to tell you why. You have a right to know.” He grabbed my hand and held it. “Please. Glenn wanted me to tell you. That’s why I’m staying here tonight. Let me tell you.”
I lowered my head, not wanting to hear a word of what he had to say about it. I would tell by the look on his face as I looked up that it was hurting him pretty bad to have to tell. I raised my head and nodded, letting it go, and just hearing him out.
“You know how much he loves you. Don’t you?” He stopped for a second, like he didn’t want to go on but had to. “You know he’d die for you and that baby. That’s just Glenn, family and responsibility first. You know for a fact he’s the protective type. He’s always been like that. Damned if I know why he felt it was his responsibility to play a damned guardian angel to the whole world. He only has to take care of you, the baby and his parents. Still he likes to make sure everyone else is happy, even if he would be miserable for it.”
He looked down at the table, trying to rub out a scratch. “Anyway, I think you should know why he had you do all that. This is something I have told Sara, and she has accepted it. Glenn allowed it one time and will never again after what happened. He wants you to be told and as a gift to him for your wedding, I’m going to. It’s not something I am proud of. Faith, I…” He pursed his lips together and swallowed. He dropped his head and spoke, his words clear, cold and slightly frightening. “I’m attracted to you. Not really you, but what you are like. Or rather who you are like. Sara.”
I cocked my head at him and I could swear my eyes bugged out. He spoke again, speaking softly but clear as his head was lowered.
“You remind me of Sara. A lot. Your attitude, the way you take no shit, except your man’s. Sometimes, you don’t even take it from him. I had to see if you were like her, in more ways than one. And I have always wanted to be in a threesome. It has been somehting I have wanted to do since before my first wife. Sara doesn’t ever want to, it’s her right to do so. So I asked her, if I could find someone who was like her and willing, would she let me? She said yes, but she had to apporve and wanted to know in advance. I told Glenn about it before I asked you if you would be his for the night. He knew before and was in on it. He knew, or at least he thought he did, in the back of his mind that you wouldn’t let me near you, not while you were trying to have a baby with him. He thought you’d fight it, tooth and nail, in fact he was counting on it. You didn’t, you thought he wanted it and so, like the role you were taking, submited as a wife submits to her husband. You did what he asked, instead of fighitng against us, you submitted to him and, in turn, me, making yourself unhappy. Just like him I think. He and I were so wrapped up in the fact we wanted to get laid that we didn’t think, and the fact we were drunk off our asses didn’t help. We practicaly raped you. Maybe not Glenn, but I did. You slept with your husband, and loved him, and because he said I would be involved, you allowed it happen. His will over your own. I know that it hurt you, and I’m sorry as hell. I can’t take it back, and I wish I could. Glenn told me he thought that the baby was mine for a while. It’s not. No, that’s his child. God had to make something good happen that night for you two, saw fit to give the both of you what you wanted. Made the time right and let you be in the one you love’s arms when you concieved for him.
“I’ve been a horse’s ass. I can’t make it up to you, nothing could. I can say I found out youre not anything like I expected you to be. You’re not Sara. I thought you might be like her. In dedication and strength, and in how much you love, you are. More than anything, you’re Faith, Glenn’s wife. Nothing could change that, I wouldn’t want to change it. You were made for that man and he is yours forever. You’ll never get away from him. Though, I know you wouldn’t want to.” He smiled weakly as I stared at the table surface, absorbing what he had said. I couldn’t not forgive him. I don’t hold grudges.
“I forgive you Mark, but, I want a promise from you.”
He looked to me as I stared out the window, watching as trees by the wedding canopy swayed in the wind. “Promise me you will apologize to Glenn, and be there for him. He’s gone need the advice you can give on being a father and coping with the fact we’re having a baby. He knows it and accepts it, but he feels like it’s a dream, and it’s a shock to him. You’re a father and can help him out. Prepare him. And don’t go screwin’ all your friend’s females. Some might get offended.” I smiled at the last comment and stood, stretching. “That’s how you can semi-make it up to me. Youre gonna get babysitting duty a lot for the first few years of this baby’s life, be prepared.”
He smirked up at me and shook his head. “Torture me.”
“Gotta. Keeps ya humble. I’m going to bed, big day and too much shock for one night. Brain-fry. G’night Mark.”
I spun and headed out the door and up the stairs. I heard the faint sound of Mark talking and went and peeked around to see him talking on a cellphone. I strained and listened, knowing he was talking to Glenn, because I heard him apologizing and telling him exactly what he had told me and how I had taken it.
I shook my head and headed upstairs, tired, and knowing tommorrow would be a LONG day.
