Chapter 35 Departure
They piled into the various vehicles and headed to the airport. Reaching the hanger, Jarod and Devon helped to load the luggage, while Standing Elk, his arm around her shoulder, walked Raven slowly to the plane. As Vin finished the arrangements with Anita, Ric said his goodbyes to his brothers. Aaron wished him God speed, and said that he would pray for Craig’s speedy recovery, Devon hugged him and told him to take good care of his sister-in-law-to-be, Jarod who was never much for sentiment, just nodded as if to say “You know how I feel,” and he did. He knew exactly how he felt.
As his father got Raven seated and strapped in Jarod and Ric waited on the steps of the plane for Vin. Ric was anxious to get going, to get on the way to Craig, at the same time he felt as though something was missing. As they waited on the steps for Vin, Eric’s missing piece arrived. Driving as though he had a presidential police escort, Brandon came barreling into the parking lot. Half parking the car, he jumped out and hurried to his brother’s side.
“I just got the message” he said breathless. Looking into Ric’s eyes he saw what the younger Andrews had been trying to hide. It had been a long time since he’d seen kokipa in any of his brothers, and he almost didn’t know how to handle it.
Cupping the back of his brother’s neck he shook him gently and said;
“It’s going to be all right,” “I can feel it” he said reassuringly.
“I know.” Ric said unconvincingly. As they said their goodbyes, Vin exited the hanger with the pilot.
“Okay folks, let’s saddle up.” First the pilot then Vin climbed the stairs and entered the plane. As Eric started up the stairs Standing Elk called after him. As he turned and looked into his father’s eyes, the elder Andrews said,
“I trust you’ll do the right thing Hehaka Chikala,” then without waiting for a response, turned and walked back towards his car. As Eric sat down and fastened his seat belt he marveled at how Standing Elk always seemed to “know.”
“One thing’s for sure” Ric thought as the plane headed down the runway, “It doesn’t just come from sittin’ in that chair.”
They’d been in the air about 30 minutes, Raven was sleeping peacefully in Eric’s arms and Vin was pretending to watch the stars, trying not to watch the best part of his life slip away from him. As he sat there watching her sleep he tried to figure out what went wrong, and when. Everything seemed right, the morning had gotten off to a rocky start, but they’d gotten past that. As he thought back on their time together he began to wonder if what he was thinking was true.
“I held her, I felt her, not just her body, I felt her mind, held her soul.” “You can’t fake that,” he thought to himself. “Why would she go through all of that with me, if she was just going to turn around and play me?” “I doesn’t make sense”; “It just doesn’t make sense.”
