When Night Falls(Pt35)
Months later Sav bounded down the stairs as he stuffed his wallet in the back pocket of his jeans. He was meeting Nick at the pub later for another fun night out and away from the tension in the house. Striding into the kitchen, his steps slowed when he saw Joe sitting at the table reading some sort papers. Phil sat on the other side scribbling in his notebook some lyrics to a song that had been playing around in his head. Crystal was finishing up her dinner of baked chicken that she had thrown together.
“Hi Sav. Hey you look good. Going out again tonight?” Phil asked.
“Um yeah…” Sav glanced at Joe. “..I’m meeting Nick at the pub.”
Phil felt the chill in the air go down to Arctic temps. “Sounds like fun. Doesn’t it Joe?” He looked over at him and didn’t get a response. “Joe.”
“hm.” He didn’t so much as grunt his acknowledgment.
“Sounds like fun.”
”What does?” Joe turned the page.
“Going to the pub.” Phil replied.
“I don’t feel much like going out. You go ahead.”
“I wasn’t going. Gail and I have other plans. Sav asked if you wanted to go.” Phil caught Sav’s heated glare.
“I don’t feel like going out.” Joe mumbled.
“You don’t feel much these days.” Sav grumbled opening the refrigerator, snatching a bottle from a shelve.
“Everyone has noticed it Joe.” Phil added.
“Your bah-hum-bug attitude is getting on my nerves.” Sav blurted. “You can’t hide away in this house forever Joe. Locking yourself away from everyone around you…shutting me out.”
“I’m not shutting you out.” Joe said.
Phil cringed when Sav slammed the cabinet door closed. “That’s the most laughable thing I’ve heard in ages.”
“I’m not shutting you out Sav.” Joe repeated, looking up at him for the first time, but his eyes held no warm to them.
“Really.” Sav’s temper flared. “Then where have you been for the past couple of months? You have barely talked to me, acknowledged that I was even here and certainly not in my mind or our bed.”
“I just don’t have anything to talk about.” Joe looked back to his newspaper.
“Since when did you not have anything to talk about?” Sav stalked over to the table, slammed the bottle down and swiped the paper from the table. “Well, I do want to talk about it. Let’s find out what is on Mr. Joe Elliott’s mind…eh..”
“There is nothing on my mind.” Joe started looking up at him again.
Phil leaned back waiting on the fireworks. He had felt this confrontation between them coming for weeks, long over due for it actually. The tension in the air whenever both of them were in the same room was heavy on several occasions and tonight Sav was going to finally have it out with him. He motioned for Crystal to move down to the other chair and out range from any possible flying objects.
“Hum lets see…is it because you’re dealing with the anger of losing Tommy…jealousy maybe, because my son is still alive and Tommy isn’t. Could it be that you’re sick of taking care of me and this is your way of saying I am?” Sav propped his arms on the table, glaring at Joe. “No… that’s not it…oh I got it. You blame me for Tommy’s death.”
“Nick has filled your head with bullshit again.” Joe replied calmly, looking away from him.
“Has he?” Sav growled. “Then look at me Joe and tell me that you don’t blame me.” He waited for what seemed like eons for him to do just that.
Joe sat there, staring down at a deep scratch, picking at it with his fingernail.
“How about this one? Are you waiting for me to tell you every little bitty gory detail of his death, what I went through to save him.”
Joe finally looked up at him. “That would be a good start.”
Narrowing his eyes in slight anger. “That...well never happen.”
“Why bring it up if you weren’t going to tell me?”
“To get you to talk to me, argue, fight, something... anything is better then this thousand foot thick wall you have put between us.”
“I don’t want to do any of that.” Joe replied looking back at the table.
“It is not my fucking fault Joe,” Sav lowly started. “When are you going to see that, understand that?” Sav’s insides churned with dread, when he didn’t respond, instead Joe looked to other parts of the room. He knew this would happen, didn’t want to come back to this side for fear of this very moment. “You can’t do…”
“It’s not that Sav. Joe’s had a lot…”
“Shut up Phil.” Sav stood straight. Not having the strength to yell anymore, his voice was low and soft. “I don’t need for him to answer. I knew the answer before I came back. Just so you know, I was fine with being trapped between two worlds, I could have stayed there to avoid all this. I didn't want to come back here to face this blame from you. The moment I stepped off the plane with Thomas, I knew it was there...still there."
"Why did you." Jos asked barely above a whisper.
"For the man I have always loved." Sav watched him shift in his seat, casting his eyes back the scratch, waiting for a reply, when one didn't come, he continued. "You want to know who changed my mind Joe?”
Silence.
“Thomas did. He told me his death didn’t matter anymore...that my father does…his words. We thought that you were going to kill yourself that day on the hill.”
“I didn’t go there to do that.” Joe glanced up at him, saw the hurt and pain in his eyes. “I go there when I want to….”
”Doesn’t matter now, does it?” Sav cut him off. “You know what else Thomas told me? Go home Uncle Sav, tell dad that we love and miss him very much. Thomas doesn’t blame me for his death and doesn’t hold me at fault. I tasted that and his love for all of us in his blood the day he died. He made me understand what I would be giving up if I stayed there with them. That short time we spent together in that place, I will cherish it for a very long time.”
Joe stood up and went around the table to stand in front of him. “You’ve never told me any of this.”
“You never gave me the chance too, between everything that was happening...then after... you’ve slowly been pushing me away.”
”I’ll listen now.” Joe reached for his hand and Sav pulled away.
“You’ve made it abundantly clear where you stand in regards to Thomas…and us. You’ll always blame me for his death, it will always be there between us. Just like what happened with Amber. I’m at peace with myself Joe. I don’t feel any guilt or regret for my failure in not saving him. He helped me see that and I will not let you drag me back down.” Sav slowly backed away from him, glancing briefly at Phil. “I have to go meet Nick.” Sav turned and headed for the door and suddenly stopped. “Oh…” Long strides had him back in front of Joe. “…I did forget one other thing.” Taking Joe’s face between his hands, Sav placed a long, lingering kiss on his lips. Much the same way Thomas did him. “Give that to him, from both of us. Thomas told me after he did the same to me.”
“Why did it take you so long to giv…?”
Sav shrugged his shoulder. “Doing everything in my power to get through to you… made me forget.” With that, he spun on his heels.
“Sav.” Crystal jumped from her chair. He stopped and turned back to face her.
“Are we still on for tonight? You said you would help me with my chemistry project, its due on Monday.”
“Not tonight sweetheart.” Sav replied glancing at Joe. “I’m not sure what time I will be home…or when.”
“Oh.” Crystal answered softly, looking at the floor. She went back over to the table and sat down as he left the room. A few minutes later they heard the front door close.
”Why do I get the strange feeling that Sav was telling you goodbye.” Phil stood up and went to stand beside Joe.
Coming out of his stupor Joe looked at him. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, I think I do.” Phil made to leave the room, then stopped. “Take some advice from an old man Joe, one that has stood by you for 90 years. Get over it, get on with your life with Sav, the way it’s destined to be. If you don’t, you will lose him forever this time. You’ve lost Evelyn again already because of your standoffish mood with her. Who is going to be next to leave you?”
Joe bent over and snatched the papers from the floor, tearing it in the process. “I’ve heard that before. Save me the lecture Phil, I don’t want to hear it.”
“I’m not going to lecture, just telling you the facts as I see them. The riff between you and Sav has never been like this. Take your blinders off and see it for yourself.”
“You’re beginning to sound like Nick and his twisted game of words.” Joe grumbled as he flopped back in his seat.
Phil shook his head slightly, giving into defeat. “Whatever Joe.”
“Yeah…whatever.” Joe waved him off.
Phil never took his eyes off him. “Gail and I will be going home in a few days. I really hope you work it out with Sav before then.”
”Fat chance in that.” Joe thought. “OK…have a safe trip.”
Staring at him a moment longer, Phil left room.
After Joe tried to get immersed in reading the papers again, he finally gave up, shoving them across the table. Grabbing a fresh bottle from the pantry he leaned against the counter, taking several long swallows.
“Could you help me with my chemistry project Joe?”
“I was never good at chemistry.”
“It counts for a large part of my exam grade if I turn it on Monday. If I don’t, I might fail the class.”
”Do the best you can.” Joe replied. Taking the bottle he went outside and flopped down in the cool grass to watch the stars race across the midnight blue sky.
Crystal cleared away her dishes. Washing and drying them, then went up to her room to study for exams next week. Grabbing her satchel from the desk chair, she tossed it on the bed.
“I’m going to fail chemistry.” She sighted heavily.
Reaching into her satchel she pulled out her notepad, flipping to the cardboard backing she traced her fingers over the small picture that she had taken from the photo album downstairs.
“Maybe one day you will not see me as a naive little girl.” Crystal whispered.

Sav causally breezed into the pub, chatting briefly with the people he knew as he wound his way to his usual table. Nick stood up as he approached, kissing him softly on the lips.
Pulling back Nick sought out his eyes and noticed the touch of sadness in them. “What is it?”
“You were right.” Sav yelled over the music.
Nick reached up and gently caressed is cheek. “You confronted him didn’t you?”
Sav only nodded his reply, then leaned forward. “He couldn’t even look at me and say it.”
Strong arms encircled his waist. “I’m looking at you and I can say it. I love you.”
Sav turned his head just in time for Tiny to place a kiss on his lips that was meant for his cheek.
“I love you even more now Savage.” Tiny grinned.
“I’m sure you do Tiny, but I wasn’t talking about you. And I’m not going to talk about it with you.”
Tiny turned him around, studying his face. “I know that look.”
Sav twisted from his grasp, he grabbed Nick’s hand. “Dance with me, help me forget about earlier.”
“My pleasure.” Nick smiled and allowed Sav to lead him into the throng of people on the dance floor.
Tiny watched them a moment before sliding into the seat next to Roland, a long time friend of Nick’s, who showed up a few moments ago.
“That family is the best entertainment I’ve seen in years. Lots of drama and fun to amuse us for eternity.”
“I know for a fact that their last ordeal was far from fun, Roland.” Tiny glared at him. “And it certainly wasn’t amusing.”
“That’s right, you were in the thick of it this time.” Roland punched his arm. “So Tiny…” He leaned closer to him so that he could hear. “…have you had a crack at that tight ass of Savages I’ve heard some much about?”
Tiny whipped his head around to hit him with a hard stare.
“I heard that he even turned Armand’s eyes for a go at fucking him. He may have been one of the Elders at one time, but he got around along with the rumors about him. And we all knew that Armand in all his long life never did that. So he must be as good as they say.”
“You best watch your tongue boy.” Tiny growled. “Armand was killed for what he did.”
“Boy…who are you calling boy?” Roland shot back. “Everybody in the Community knows about Savage, what a whore he is. I always wondered why Joe stays with him, considering how Savage treated him in the past or still treating him by the looks of it.” He hooked his finger to where Sav and Nick were dancing.
”It’s called love and respect Roland. Something you have no clue as to what the words mean. I could give you another reason, the oldest one, but its none of your business.”
“Oh and Nick…” Roland slapped his hand on the table. “…don’t get me started on him. I’ve known him for a lot of years. He used to be the most feared vampire in the Community. Now look at him, groveling at Savages feet like some love sick puppy. He could sneeze and Nick would fly from half way around the world to wipe his nose.” Roland started laughing.
Quick as lightening Tiny grabbed the back of his neck, shoved him forward to slam into the table. The force of it breaking the table in half and smashing Roland face.
The noise in the pub died down and all heads turned in his direction. Tiny pushed the broken table pieces off his foot and stood up, he turned to the stunned crowd.
“Let that be a lesson to all of you that want to bad mouth Savage or his family. You can do it behind my back so that I can’t hear it, but never to my face. It could mean your death.”
Murmurs went up through out the pub from what Tiny said and did. Everyone knew that he was a gentle giant and rarely seen him pissed off.
“He’s not dead Tiny.” Nick said from the crowd.
“Maybe not, but he won’t do it again either.” Tiny replied looking down at the blood slowly pooling around Roland’s head.
“Hey Tiny…” A man shouted from the back of the crowd. “…little late to be saving Sav’s virtue isn’t it? He has had just about everybody in this pub.”
“Keep tossing those pennies in the wishing well Tony, ‘cause you’ll never have me.” Sav jokingly yelled back.
“I’m all out of pennies Savage. Does that mean I get my wish?”
“NO!” Sav dug in his pocket and tossed some coins to him. “Try the quarters and keep wishing.”
Laughter rolled around the pub. The music started back up and bodies began to move once more. Roland was hoisted over everyone’s head and tossed in a room in the back of the pub to heal from his injuries. Tiny winked at Sav when he looked his way, then moved through the crowd to the bar. The incident with Roland forgotten, but not Tiny’s warning.
Nick pulled Sav closer to him, wrapping his arm tightly around his waist to hold him in place. Dropping his head down to gently suck on the cool flesh of his neck. Moving upward, he flicked his tongue over his ear.
“I have just the thing to make you forget about tonight.”
Sav closed his eyes and titled his head back. “Oh and what is that?”
Twining his fingers through Sav’s, Nick guided him to the back rooms, stopping at one of the doors to knock, all the while with a small grin on his face.
