"Kelly," Jessica smiled as she walked into the theater.
"Hey," Kelly nodded, slipping on her vest.
"Can we talk for a minute?"
"Is this about refusing to sale that kid popcorn the other day?" Kelly asked, following her into the break room. "Because that was the kid that tried to flush the popcorn down the toilet the last time he was here, and I so wasn't about to clean up that mess again."
Jessica laughed softly as they sat on the couch, "No, it's not about that."
"You talked to Ashley..."
"She called me, yea," Jessica nodded.
"What'd she say?"
"That she told you."
"You're totally going to fuss at me for hurting her, huh?"
"Not at all," she shook her head. "I just wanted to see what was going on with you. Make sure you were ok."
"Yea, I'm fine, just feeling a little guilty."
"For?"
"I don't know...not liking her back...for leading her on in some sort of way?"
"Kelly, you can't help the fact that you don't like her in that way, and you didn't lead her on."
"Then why does she like me?"
"Just as much as you can't help the fact that you don't like her, she can't help the fact that she does like you."
Kelly sighed, leaning against the back of the sofa, "I don't know how I missed it. I mean, thinking about it now...it's kinda obvious. I feel bad about being so harsh with her."
"Don't beat yourself up, you do tend to be pretty naive about these things," Jessica patted her knee.
"Not helping."
She laughed softly.
"How do I handle this? Like, how am I supposed to be with her?"
"Just act normal."
"You sure? I've been acting normal, and that's what got her mad at me in the first place."
"Not exactly. It's more of how..."
"More of how what?"
Jessica frowned, "This isn't really my place."
"Jebbie...come on...you know how much I hate when y'all keep stuff from me."
She nodded, "It's not you acting normal that upset her. It's the way you act around Carrie that upset her."
"How would the way I act with Carrie upset her?" Kelly asked confusedly. "I act the same with her as I do with y'all."
"You and Carrie, y'all are just...really close."
Kelly wrinkled her brow in confusion, trying to think of something, anything that she and Carrie had done in public that would make Ashley think that way. "Is this because of the truth or dare kiss?"
"That's part of it."
"But that was a dare," she pointed out.
Jessica shifted nervously, "Y'all have a lot of chemistry."
"Carrie and I?"
She nodded.
"I wouldn't necessarily say chemistry."
"I would."
"I think it's just...a comfortableness."
"That too," Jessica nodded, studing her carefully. "Which was odd considering the only other time you kissed someone was in a play."
Kelly chewed on the corner of her bottom lip.
"Kelly...you know you can talk to me..."
"The play...that wasn't my first kiss," she swallowed hard.
"No?"
Kelly shook her head.
"What was?"
"Carrie..." she replied softly.
"Carrie?"
"She, um...we were talking about it...about the play, and I told her I had never been kissed before--that's why I was nervous. We were just talking, and we came to the logical conclusion that Carrie should be my first kiss. That way I wouldn't have to worry about her laughing at me, and I wouldn't be so nervous in the play."
Jessica nodded, not pointing out that her logic and most seventeen year old's logic differed greatly, "So, the party wasn't y'alls first time kissing?"
"No."
"Second?"
"Third."
"Third," Jessica nodded again. "Not the last?"
"Not the last," Kelly shook her head.
"Kelly..."
"She's just helping me...teaching me..."
"I just don't want you to get hurt," Jessica explained.
"How would I get hurt?"
"You're new to this," she pointed out. "You've only dated one guy before, and that was for like two weeks."
"I'm not dating her. I don't see her like that...I'm not like that. We're just practicing."
"But you do care about her."
"Well yea."
"And if she starts dating someone, and y'all have to stop practicing, you wouldn't have a problem with that?"
"No, of course not. Jebbie, it's just kissing."
Jessica sighed, "I know..."
"I've got to get going," Kelly stood. "I need to go restock the candy shelves. We're ok, right?"
"Of course," Jessica assured her. "You know me...just always worried about you."
Kelly laughed softly, "One day you're gonna realize that I can take care of myself."
"Doubt that," she smiled.
"Listen, about Care...you're not going to say anything to anyone, right?"
"No, of course not. Don't worry."
"Thanks," Kelly nodded.

Jessica frowned as Carrie walked into the theater. She knew she shouldn't say anything, but she knew she had to, "Hey."
"Hey," Carrie smiled. "Kelly's ready yet?"
"About fifteen more minutes."
Carrie nodded, "Mind if I bore you till then."
"Um, no, actually. I kinda wanted to talk to you about something."
"Sure, everything ok?"
"No," Jessica shook her head. "Not really."
"Ok..."
Jessica looked around, making sure there wasn't anyone near before turning back to her, "Look, I don't know what exactly your experience level is, but I know that it's more than Kelly's, and I just think that what you're doing is wrong."
"What am I doing?"
"This...this kissing thing--"
Carrie felt herself blush.
"Kelly, she tries to come off so tough, but she's really very innocent and naive, and I don't see how this can end well."
"It's just kissing."
"Once...maybe twice, then yea, it would be just kissing. Not this. You and I both know that it is impossible to not form some sort of connection with someone when you're with them like that consistently. Maybe you've dated enough to be able to put up that block, and make that distinction between what you and Kelly are doing and what you would be doing with someone you had feelings for, but she hasn't."
"I don't think you give her enough credit."
"And I don't think you should continue doing this. What happens when you get bored? What happens when you find some hot guy? What are you going to tell her? Sorry, Kell, it was fun but I've found better?"
"It's not like that. We're just--"
"Practicing, I know. That's what she said."
"Then maybe you should trust her."
"Carrie, you know I like you, I do, I just don't want to see Kelly get hurt."
"And you think I do?"
"No," Jessica sighed.
"I would never do something to hurt her," Carrie assured.
Jessica eyed her carefully.
"Care!"
They both turned to find Kelly walking to them with a huge grin.
"Hey," Carrie smiled, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her into a loose hug.
"You've been waiting long?"
"Nah, just a couple minutes. You ready to go?"
"Yep," she nodded. "Later Jebbie."
"Bye," Jessica forced a smile.

"You're staying tonight?" Kelly asked as she sat at her desk, finishing her math homework while Carrie lay stretched out on top of her bed.
"Nah, my mom doesn't want me staying over on school nights."
"I wouldn't be surprised if your mom didn't want you staying over on any night."
"Well, she doesn't, but my dad said there's no reason I can't stay here on the weekends."
Kelly nodded.
"Come lay with me for a bit," Carrie suggested. "I want to talk."
"Uh oh," Kelly replied, standing and walking over to the bed.
Carrie laughed softly as the shorter girl climbed over her before laying down. She wrapped an arm around the Texan, pulling her to her side, "So..."
"Sorry."
"For?"
"Telling Jebbie."
Carrie nodded, "Yea, that definitely caught me off guard."
"I know I shouldn't have said anything, but we were talking about Ashley, and she was trying to explain why Ashley would be jealous of you, and I kept insisiting there was no reason for her to be, and yea...are you mad?"
"No," she shook her head. "Just...can you maybe keep from telling other people? I just don't think the majority of people down here are as open minded as she is."
Kelly nodded, "I didn't have any intention of telling anyone."
"I know."
"Jebbie didn't give you a hard time, did she?"
"Um, not too bad. She's just looking out for you, that's all."
"She made such a big deal out of it. She didn't understand."
"Yea," Carrie nodded, kissing her temple. "Baby, listen, I think we need to talk about this."
"Talk?"
"Yea, we haven't really talked about it yet, and I think we should."
"Do you not want to, anymore?"
"No, no, that's not it. I just...I would never hurt you, Kell."
"I know that," she turned her head, looking at her curiously.
"Good," Carrie replied, kissing her forehead.
Kelly turned on her side, into Carrie, wrapping an arm around her stomach, "Care..."
"Hmm?"
"Thanks for being so patient with me. I know kissing me may not be your favorite past time, especially when I'm as inexperienced as I am, but you've been really great about it and about going as slow as I want, so thank you."
"You make it sound like kissing you is some chore."
Kelly shrugged.
"You remember how you said kissing me makes you happy?"
She nodded.
"Well kissing you makes me happy."
Kelly smiled as she looked up at her, "Yea?"
"Yea."
She reached up, her eyes closing.
Carrie placed a finger on her lips, pausing her.
Kelly's eyes opened, clearly confused.
"Not yet," she smiled gently. "Laying down and kissing...you're not there yet."
Kelly went to turn away, but Carrie cradled her face, bringing her closer to kiss her cheek.
"I try to be as patient as possible with you, but you've got to help me out and cut me a little slack."
"I don't understand."
"I only have so much patience, and while I'll gladly go as slow as you want, I can't guarantee that while we're laying down on your bed."
"How's it any different than sitting on my bed?"
"It is...just trust me on this one, ok?"
Kelly nodded, smiling as Carrie kissed her cheek again. She laid back down, resting her head on the taller girl's shoulder.

"Care, I'm so sorry," Kelly apologized, hopping around the room. She struggled to slip her shoe on, tripping and falling onto the bed.
Carrie smiled, pulling her up into a sitting position, "Slow down. Where's the fire?"
"You fell asleep. I let you fall asleep. Your mom is gonna hate me."
"Um, first off, I fell asleep, yes, but that's not your fault. Second, running around like a chicken with it's head cut off isn't going to help anything. It's not like we're late for school--we have plenty of time. And third..."
"Your mom already hates me."
"Well...hate's such a strong word."
Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"Ok, so maybe she hates you a little."
"I'm sorry for letting you fall asleep."
"It's ok."
"You're gonna get in trouble?" she asked, worriedly.
Carrie knelt down in front of her, "That is not for you to be worrying about."
"She's not gonna let you stay here, anymore. That's gonna be your punishment," Kelly nodded surely.
Carrie had to resist the urge to 'aw' at the sadness in the shorter girl's eyes as she thought about her not being able to come over anymore, "Everything's going to be fine."
"But if you can't come here, how are you gonna teach me to kiss?"
"I'm sure we can find a way," Carrie assured, standing. She cradled her face carefully, kissing her forehead. "I'm gonna go take a shower and get ready for school. Why don't you go fix us something to eat?"
Kelly nodded, earning another kiss on her forehead before Carrie grabbed the bag she kept there with extra clothes and made her way to the bathroom.
