Ashley leaned against the doorway in the kitchen, watching as Kate stood on the side of Kelly, one arm wrapped around her as she instructed the singer on how to cook the meat for the tacos properly. "So where's Jill?"
Kate jumped slightly before replying, "With Meghan."
"Ah...tonight's the night?"
"Yep," Kate nodded. "She's planning on telling her what happened in Nashville."
"She should've stopped by here first for a little pep talk."
"She wanted to, but she was running really late."
"I'm sure things are going to work out fine."
"I hope so," Kelly agreed, not looking up from the pan. "She's so happy when she's with Meghan."
"It's funny how being with someone can have that affect," Ashley looked at Kate pointedly.
Kate blushed, "Yea...I hope Meghan realizes that."
"Yea...can you imagine what it must've been like for them before they got together? Being so close to someone and liking them so much and thinking that they don't stand a chance because the other person doesn't feel the same way, but in reality they do? That must've been pretty rough," Ashley smiled.
"Hey Ash...the meat's almost ready...why don't you start bringing the plates and stuff to the living room to set up in there?" Kate suggested.
"That's a lot of stuff to bring using only two hands," Ashley noted.
"Here, I'll help," Kelly offered, going to hand the spoon over to Kate.
"Nonsense," Ashley waved her off. "You're getting so good at the stirring thing. Kate...give me a hand?"
"Sure..." Kate eyed her carefully as she grabbed the shredded cheese and the salsa and followed Ashley into the living room.
"So..." Ashley smiled innocently.
"What was that about?" Kate squeaked.
"Just trying to move things along," Ashley shrugged.
"Things are moving along just fine, thank you."
"Have you told her yet?"
"Well...no..."
"Don't you think it's about time?"
Kate sighed, "I've tried."
"And?"
"I just...I chicken out."
Ashley took her arm gently and pulled her closer, "You've gotta stop chickening out, ok? She deserves to know. You seriously have no clue how amazing she's been to you, and how hard it is for her to be that way."
"I..."
"There's no reason for you to be afraid. She's not going to reject you."
"But what about her being my boss?"
"It still bothers her, but she said she's not going to let it stand in the way if you want to start something."
"What about...what about me? If I ask her out, what does that mean for me?"
"Hey, don't even worry about that," Ashley rubbed her arm comfortingly. "All it means is that you like her, ok? That's it. Fuck what anybody else thinks it means."
Kate nodded, "Yea...you're right."
"I know," Ashley shrugged.
Kate laughed lightly, "You know...Kelly was really lucky to have you there for her."
"It's always nice to have support," Ashley nodded. "I just wish she would've let me be there for her sooner, but can't change the past, you know?"
"Yea."
"So you're going to tell her?"
"Yea."
"Tonight?"
"Tonight," Kate took a nervous breath.

Kelly smiled as Kate's arms squeezed around her stomach tightly as they laid in bed watching a movie, "Be careful there, I think I ate one too many tacos."
Kate giggled, kissing her cheek.
"Well aren't you just the cuddly one lately," Kelly noted, scratching the blonde's back lightly.
"Is that ok?"
"I sure as hell am not complaining."
Kate smiled, kissing her cheek again as she pulled her closer.
Kelly raised a curious eyebrow as she turned onto her side, bringing them face to face.
"What?" Kate asked innocently as her arm wrapped around the Texan's back, holding her close.
"You tell me," Kelly replied.
Kate blushed softly, "I like being close to you...is that a crime?"
"Not at all," Kelly shook her head. "How close do you wanna be?"
Kate bit her bottom lip hard as Kelly scooted so that her entire body was pressing lightly against her own.
"Like this?" Kelly offered.
Kate nodded, taking a deep breath.
"You're so cute," Kelly giggled.
"And hot?" Kate questioned hopefully, pulling her even closer.
Kelly froze.
"You ok?"
"Yea..." she replied, her voice deliberate.
"Y-you sure?" Kate asked, her heart racing as she leaned in to get a better look at Kelly's eyes. She had never seen them so dark before. "Your eyes are amazing..."
Kelly took a shaky breath. She forced her eyes to stay glued on Kate's, knowing if the moved down to her lips that were merely an inch or two from her own she'd lose the last ounce of self-control she was currently struggling to hold on to.
"Are you sure you're ok?" Kate asked, slightly worried. "You seem tense."
"I'm fine."
"Am I too close?"
"It depends."
"On what?" Kate's breath caught as Kelly shifted against her.
"What you're looking for."
"W-what does that mean?"
"Kate..." Kelly all but begged.
"I'm being serious," Kate replied.
"We've always been honest with each other," Kelly reminded. "No games."
"I know, and I honestly want to know what's on your mind right now."
Kelly swallowed hard, unsure of why she felt her eyes stinging.
"Kell?"
"I want you so bad," Kelly closed her eyes tightly as she pressed their foreheads together. "I always thought the phrase about wanting something so bad that it hurts was an exaggeration, but I was wrong..."
"Being this close--it's hard for you?"
"I don't want to push you," Kelly shook her head.
"What if...what if I said I wanted to be pushed?"
"Kate..."
"No games," she promised.
Kelly shook her head, clinging to the back of her shirt.
"What are you afraid of?"
"You."
"I'm not gonna hurt you."
"It's a little late for that," Kelly replied, surprised by the bitterness in her voice.
"Kell..."
"No, I'm sorry," she quickly apologized, kissing the tip of her nose at the hurt tone in her voice. "I didn't mean that."
"Yes, you did."
"I'm sorry," Kelly shook her head.
"No, I'm sorry. I just...I never realized how hard this is for you. I'm sorry for hurting you."
"You're not hurting me, it's ok," Kelly clung to her tighter, not wanting her to pull away.
"W-what if I could make it so that it wasn't hard for you anymore?"
"Kate, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that," Kelly was sure her knuckles had turned white from gripping the back of her shirt so tightly.
"What if I said I could make it so that you didn't have to worry about holding yourself back anymore?"
"Kate...please..." Kelly pleaded, this time knowing exactly why her eyes were watering.
"What if I said...what if I said I wanted you too?"
"W-what?" Kelly's eyes flew open.
Kate took a nervous breath, "That would make it ok, right? It would make it less hard on you...you wouldn't have to hold yourself back if you knew that I wanted to too."
"Kate..." Kelly warned.
"I'm being serious."
"I wouldn't be able to take it if you weren't..."
"I am," she swore.
"So...so what exactly are you saying?"
"That I have feelings for you...lots and lots of really great feelings."
"Yea?" Kelly smiled.
Kate nodded.
"And you...you wanna do something about those feelings?" Kelly asked hopefully.
She nodded again.
"Like..."
"Go out?" Kate offered.
"Go out?"
"Yea, like...you be my girlfriend..."
"Girlfriend?" Kelly's eyes widened.
"Yea."
"Are you...have you thought about this? Like really thought about it?"
"Yea, it's all I've been thinking about," she admitted.
"Oh...uh..."
"Why...oh no...oh God...I'm doing it, aren't I? I'm totally rushing things, huh?" Kate paled. "Kelly, I'm so sorry, I take it back. Please don't freak out on me. How about we just go on a date instead? A real date, just the two of us--where both of us actually know it's a date. Forget I even brought up the girlfriend thing. Just please don't pull away."
"I'm not."
"You're not?"
Kelly shook her head.
"Ok good," Kate let out a relieved breath. "I'm sorry."
"It's ok. I just...have a lot to think about...process..."
"Good thinking and processing?"
"Good thinking and processing," Kelly nodded with a smile.
"Ok good," she let out a second relieved breath. "Would this be the wrong time to say that the thought of having sex with a girl thoroughly freaks me out?"
Kelly laughed softly, "It depends on what type of freaking out."
"Scares me may be the more correct way to put it."
"Going into this, you need to know that I will never push you to do something you're not ready for or don't want to do."
"Jill said you'd say that."
"Even Jill can have her smart moments," Kelly allowed.
"But I...I do want to," she blushed deeply. "I just..."
"I know."
"You may have to be patient with me."
"I will be," Kelly nodded, fighting back a grin.
"What?"
Kelly shrugged, "You'll be surprised at how quickly you'll adjust to things."
"You think so?"
"Definitely. I mean, think about it: when it comes to kissing, all the mechanics are the same, but it's just so much...better and hotter and soon you don't even care that it's a girl and that you've never been with a girl before because you just want to be with her so badly that it doesn't matter."
"I forget that you've been in my shoes before."
"Yea, kinda."
"Kinda?"
"I wasn't really emotionally attatched to my first," she reminded.
"Yea, but still...you know what it's like to be scared about it."
"I do," Kelly nodded, thinking back. "And I promise you that I am going to be so patient with you and that I'm going to do anything I can to help you with all of this..."
"Unlike Claire?" Kate finished her thought for her.
"I am going to treat you like a princess," Kelly swore.
"You are too sweet for words," Kate smiled softly.
"There is nothing for you to be scared of."
"I'm starting to realize that."
"Good."
"So...now what do we do?"
"Well...what do you want to do?"
Kate shrugged, the nerves returning to her eyes.
"How about we just cuddle while we finish watching the movie?" Kelly offered.
"Yea," Kate agreed as Kelly turned back onto her back. She snuggled into the shorter girl's side, draping her arm over her stomach.
Kelly kissed her forehead, her hand soothing up and down her arm that was wrapped around her, "Comfortable?"
"Very."
"Good," Kelly kissed her again before resting her cheek there as she tried to catch up on what had been happening in the movie while they were talking, unable to fight back the huge smile she felt tugging at the corners of her lips.
++++++++++
Kate felt Kelly hold her closer as she shifted in her arms, cursing under her breath as her phone started to ring. She stretched out, over the short Texan, and grabbed her phone to read the text message. She frowned as she quickly dialed the number back, hearing it ring twice before someone picked up. "Hey."
"Hey," Jill replied flatly.
"Everything ok?"
"N-not really..." her voice cracked.
Kate sighed as she looked down at Kelly who was still sleeping, "Ok, it's ok...I'll be there in a bit. Everything's gonna be fine, ok? Do you need me to bring anything?"
"No," she sniffed loudly.
"Ok, I'll be right there," Kate assured before hanging up the phone. She trailed a finger along Kelly's jaw, watching as the singer leaned into the slight touch. "Kelly."
"Everything ok?" she mumbled, not bothering to open her eyes.
Kate smiled, "Jill just called, and she sounded really upset..."
"Go check on her."
"That's ok?"
"Of course, she's your best friend, silly."
Kate laughed softly as she leaned down to kiss her forehead, "I'll call in the morning with an update."
Kelly smiled sleepily as Kate untangled herself and climbed off the bed, allowing her to curl up, "Ok. Drive safe."
"I will," Kate assured, giggling as Kelly started to fall back asleep. She turned, walking for the door.
"Bye baby."
Kate felt goosebumps forming, unsure if it was from her thick drawl or the term she used...maybe a combination of both. "Bye Kell," she turned over her shoulder to find her sound asleep once more. She shook her head, laughing to herself as she walked out of the room, closing the door quietly. She walked down the hall, raising an eyebrow at the sound of noises coming from the kitchen. She walked past the living room and turned the corner to find Ashley pulling out a tray of brownies from the oven. "What are you doing?"
"What does it look like I'm doing?"
"Making brownies at..." she checked her phone. "Three-thirty in the morning."
"I wanted brownies," Ashley shrugged. "Want one?"
"No, I've gotta get going. Jill just called. I'm guessing things didn't go over too well with Meghan."
"Oh, man, that sucks. Here, bring her the brownies," Ashley took out a couple for herself before placing the rest on a plate and covering it with foil.
"You sure?"
"Yea, chocolate always helps a broken heart," she nodded. "So..."
"So..." Kate smiled.
"Did you tell her?"
"Tell who what?" she asked innocently.
"Don't play dumb with me, blondie. Did you tell Kelly how you feel?"
"Oh that..."
Ashley looked at her impatiently.
"Yes."
"Yes?" her eyebrows flew up.
"Yes," Kate nodded.
"And?"
"And..." Kate's brows furrowed. "And, I'm not sure, actually."
"What do you mean?"
"I asked her to be my girlfirend."
"You what?" her eyebrows flew even higher.
"Yea, but she never actually said yes or no."
"Well, if she says no, that's not the end of it, you know? I mean, y'all haven't even kissed yet, right?"
Kate nodded in agreement.
"Right, so you gotta go on at least a couple dates first before you start throwing around the g-word."
"Yea, I know...just me being my normal commitment-loving self, you know?"
"Just because y'all haven't defined y'alls relationship yet, doesn't mean Kelly's not commited to you. I mean, the girl hasn't even looked at anyone else since Daytona, and that's back when she thought she'd never have a chance with you...trust me, she's commited."
Kate smiled shyly.
"But ok, so you told her you had feelings for her...how did she react?"
"Shocked at first...but after I convinced her I wasn't joking she was really happy and sweet and reassuring and just...amazing."
"Ok, so, she likes you, you like her, y'all both are now aware of the fact...do things seem different to you?"
"A little," Kate blushed slightly, thinking of Kelly's goodbye.
"Ok, so you're no longer just friends," Ashley nodded. "There's no need to rush off into girlfriend territory. Y'all will get there when you're both ready."
"Yea, you're right."
"So she didn't answer?" Ashley asked, amused.
"No, the subject got changed, and she probably forgot."
"She didn't forget," Ashley shook her head. "There's no way she could forget you asking her out."
"Then why didn't she answer?"
"Most likely, she's not sure of things enough to say yes yet, but she didn't want to say no and have you take that the wrong way and think that that meant she didn't want to be with you. Because trust me, she does. She's never stuck around anyone as long as she has with you...she definitely wants a relationship out of this."
"How do I get her to be sure of things?"
"Just keep being yourself and proving that you're not like all the past losers she's dated. It sucks what past relationships can do to future ones, you know? She knows you're not like them, but she can't help but be apprehensive going into this."
Kate nodded.
"So did you wake her up to tell her you were leaving?"
"Yea, of course."
"And she actually got up and moved around a bit?"
"She changed positions when I got out of bed," she shrugged.
"And fell right back asleep?"
"Yea."
"Yea, she's totally not going to remember your conversation. She was probably still half-asleep when she was talking to you."
"Should I go wake her up again?"
"No, no, you need to go check on Jill. I'll remind her where you're at if she needs me to when she wakes up."
"Ok...thanks for everything, Ashley."
"Any time, kiddo," she gave her a quick hug. "Now go take care of our buddy, and call if you need us to do anything, ok?"
"I will," Kate replied, taking the plate of brownies before making her way out of the apartment.

Kelly opened one of her eyes, squinting wearily at Ashley who was sitting on her legs, "You're not the one that's supposed to be straddling me."
Ashley laughed, "What? Is this not your fantasy?"
"Nightmare," she mumbled with a tired smile.
"So, your girl..."
"My girl," her smile grew.
Ashley shook her head, laughing to herself, "She wanted me to remind you where she was so you didn't think she just bailed."
"With Jill, right?" Kelly rubbed her eyes, trying to wake up.
"Yea, Jill told Meghan about what happened in Nashville."
"How'd she take it?"
"Not too good from the sound of it."
Kelly sighed, "Man that sucks."
"Yep, but let's not dwell on that just yet. Instead, let's talk about your girl."
"My girl," she grinned.
"Are you gonna do that every time I say it?"
"Probably."
Ashley rolled her eyes.
"How was she when you talked to her?" Kelly asked curiously.
"She was good. Really happy about you two, albeit a little confused."
"About?"
"Where exactly y'all stood."
"Yea..." Kelly nodded. "We didn't really get into too much details with that, but I mean, for now just knowing how she feels is good, you know? No need to rush into defining everything. We'll get there when we do."
"That's what I told her," Ashley smiled surely.
"And she seemed ok with that?"
"I think so, yea. She understood, although hearing it from you would probably make her even more ok with it, you know? It's always good to hear how the other person feels straight from them."
"Yea," Kelly agreed.
"So how was the kiss?"
"What kiss?"
"Y'all didn't kiss?"
"No."
"What the hell?" Ashley swatted her arm.
"Dude..." Kelly fussed, rubbing the sore spot.
"Why didn't you kiss her?"
"Because one step at a time, ok? I think her just admitting how she felt was a big enough move for her. It took a lot for her to reveal that, trust me I know, I've been there. And I mean, we could've kissed yea, but I don't know...she just had a lot on her mind with all that, and I didn't want to add to it."
"You don't think kissing her would've helped her relax?" Ashley raised an eyebrow.
"Maybe," Kelly shrugged. "But I'm not one for 'what if's', so..."
"Are you gonna kiss her today?"
"Possibly, I don't know."
"How can you not know?"
"It's not really something you can plan."
Ashley sighed.
"I promise I'll tell you when I kiss her," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"You better."
"Why do you want me to kiss her so badly?"
"Because she's my good friend, and you're my best friend, and I wanna see y'all happy."
"Thanks Ash," Kelly patted her knee.
"And I may have made a bet with Jill that y'all were gonna kiss by the end of the week..." Ashley admitted as she quickly slid off the bed, dodging the pillow Kelly threw at her. "Now hurry up and get dressed because we're going over there to help cheer Jill up and to see what we can do to fix this mess she's gotten herself into."
