Steve looked out at the snowy landscape surrounding the ski lodge. It almost seemed as if there was not a another living soul anywhere near by . He loved the peace and quiet, isolated from the crowds but surrounded by loved ones. After a short but hectic fall leg of the tour, Herbie had helped Gregg arrange a winter escape for Steve and Greg and Neal and Adrian. The two young couples decided it would be nice to invite the Rossi’s and Marv and Mary to thank them for all they had done. Well at the end it turned out to be a combination vacation/ Christmas celebration and the group arrived 3 days before the holiday. The “cabin” was actually a huge house with two floors and accomadations for 12 people so it was plenty of room for 8. Gregg had teased them that each couple was placed at the opposite end of the house and on the first and second floor respectively so that there was room enough for them all to have privacy. The kitchen had been well stocked and Illaria and Mary instantly had taken over, planning meals and treats for the small group. Steve, Gregg, and Adrian, who were all experienced cooks protested saying they would share the duties. They certainly didn’t want the” mothers” to be doing all the work. The first full day there Aidrian, Neal, Gregg and Steve went horse back riding. Adrian was very adventurous and he and Gregg had went rides before. Like with hiking, they enjoyed being outside in all weather. Steve also had experience with horses, having grown up in a farm community. Neil on the other hand found that experience challenging but he was happy to be with his lover and two best friends. After a long ride they came back to the cabin but not before engaging in a vigourous snowball fight. So they were all warm happy and exhausted by time they made it back to the house.
Despite the admonishment to not get involved in heavy work, Ilaria and Mary with Joe’s help had made a huge supper. When the guys protested Mary said “ We love cooking for our boys, we know you worked up an appetite out there. “ They took their seats with Mary happily in the chair between her two boys and Illaria next to her precious new “child.”
They all sat down at the table enjoying the food. They were finishing a second bottle of expensive red wine when Joe said “ I have an announcement to make. He was quiet a minute then said “ I am retiring from the Sheriff department. I have been in the job long enough to qualify for a pension and I have military time that brings a pay check as well. With that and Illaria’s teaching job I believe we can manage financially. As I shared with Adrian there is a new class of crime solving based on psychology and the analysis and study of criminal behavior. It is in it’s infancy but I have been offered a position with the University as a teaching assistant in the field. They feel that I can offer a lot of insight because of my hands on experience in law enforcement. It doesn’t pay a lot but hopefully the new studies will help to stop people like Gacy… and Mark… before they do so much damage. And it will give me much more time to spend with my lovely wife and my “new” family members, all of which I am happy to be sitting at this table with. I thank God every day for bringing you all into my and Illaria’s life. “ Then Illaria’s spoke up and said “ No one will replace Matthew in our hearts, but having you kids here, and having Adrian as part of our home, has brought me more joy then I ever thought was possible again. I love you all. “ And she knew the boys, especially Adrian, loved her as well. She thought back to the night that had really solidified the relationship she had with Adrian. Adrian had been quiet, shy, and very withdrawn when the Rossi’s first brought him home. The couple tried to find a balance that was not being pushy but still being available to Adrian when he needed them. They both, along with Neal, helped care for Adrian as his body healed. But the emotional aspect had been much more difficult to manage. Adrian had crying spells and frequent nightmares. Often he would wake Illaria with his sobbing. Sometimes she and Joe both would wind up coming to the room, but most often it was Ilaria who would sit by the bedside till the young man fell back asleep. But one night Adrian had laid in bed after a bad dream and finally gotten up and went to the living room. He sat looking under the large photo of Matthew and thought about the horrible suffering that the young man had endured at the end of his life. And he was thinking about how much Matthews parents loved and missed him, when Ilaria came into the room. “ Can’t sleep darling ? “ She had asked then sat down next to him on the couch. Adrian had then thanked her for what she and Rossi had done then said that maybe he was becoming a burden, that they thought it was wrong for him to be there in Matthew’s place. But Illaria had shared with him, how special and important Matthew was. She talked about her son’s growing up, his endless pets, puppies, kittens, and even frogs and lizards. The pride she took in his musical ability, his scholastic achievements, the honors he earned in Vietnam. And she talked about how she missed him and how he was always her baby. She loved him so. But she told him she and Joe were so happy to have Adrian in her life, to appreciate him, to accept him as his parents had not. And while she was not his mother and he was not Matthew, she loved Adrian and cherished him. She hoped he could learn to do the same for her and Joseph. From that point on the redhead had opened his heart to the Rossi’s. “And I thank God every day too.” Mary spoke, “ for God sending you to save my boys, and bring them home safe to me. She blinked away a tear quickly as she squeezed Steve’s hand tightly and ruffled Gregg’s curls from her seat beside him. At that moment Adrian said “ I have news too, only Illaria knows this so far. I also will be teaching at the university next spring. I will be an associate professor in the British History program. And in the meantime I was accepted in the Doctorate program. When I finish I will have my Phd. I will be be able to lead an archeological excavation team, apply for grants, conduct research. And Neal has actually to volunteer for a dig I am going on in January in Mexico. Gregg chuckled and said “ You will make an adventurer out of the city boy yet.” Though every one couldn’t help but laugh at the idea of Neal digging up mummies. At bedtime Neal and Adrian had retired to their corner of the house and took hot showers. As usual when Adrian undressed Neal was in awe of his beauty. Strawberry blond all over, long luxirous auburn hair in waves falling down to his waist. And his green eyes were truly more beautiful then any emeralds Neal had ever seen. They now shared an apartment in San Francisco, Neal having sold the house that he lived in with his ex. And of course there were frequent trips to the Rossi’s for dinners and weekends at the park or the movies. Neal found it odd that it seemed a life time ago that he was engaged, not just 8 months. He remembered how three months into their relationship when he and Adrian made love for the first time. There were some awkward moments and some funny ones. Neal knew he would probably never live down when the first time he seen Adrian lying on the bed completely nude and his zipper actually worked it’s way down by itself due to his escaping errection. But what he remembered the most was experiencing the most incredible passion and deepest love Neal had ever felt in his life. And it just kept getting better. And when the two returned home they would have two new members of the family. Despite the fact Gregg bemoaned his needing allergy shots to visit them, the couple would be adopting two 4 month old Dashund puppies. The adorable pair were brother and sister born that fall. Adrian was delighted with his special gift. He always loved the funny little weiner dogs and owning them with Neal, gave the relationship a sense of permanance and security Adrian desperately needed. Gregg and Steve lay snuggled together in their own bed. After a long hot soak in the whirpool, they had dried off with heated towels. They were both naked, enjoying the skin to skin contact between the two. They were a bit sore, exhausted from the long horseback ride, and actually were enjoying some passionate cuddling and petting Steve said “ I feel so safe , so loved, in your arms. You are the other half of me. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you. “ “ Gregg said,” I always want you to feel that way. You are my soul mate.” He was quiet a minute then continued “ Isn’t it amazing, how so much happiness has came from all the sorrow of last Spring. I mean Neal is happy, he has grown so much, matured so much. The Rossi’s have found something wonderful in life with Adrian in it. “And who would ever have dreamed that the Adrian I would actually become friends.” Steve laughed. Gregg shook his head amused, then looked at him, staring deeply in his eyes, before kissing him gently. When the kiss ended he drew Steve’s head down on his chest, he pulled the covers around them, and with Misty curled up at the foot of the bed, the three drifted off to sleep. The next day being Christmas eve the kitchen was full of the smell of good cooking. The tree had been decorated with each member of the party bringing a few ornaments to share. The house was filled with hidden gifts. Rather late in the evening they were all sitting in the living room enjoying the fire and drinking eggnog. Each person had opened one gift at random but Gregg was hiding a secret. Finally he let Steve open his box. Inside were two white gold celtic wedding bands. At Steve’s surprised look, Gregg said “ I know we can’t get married legally but you are my mate for life and I hope you want to be mine. I brought the rings to symbolize that.” Steve almost looked like he was going to cry as the one ring was slipped on his finger. He then placed the ring meant for Gregg on the third finger of keyboardist’s left hand. Almost forgetting they had an audience he embraced Gregg tightly and kissed him passionately. He felt a bit shy when he heard the other members of the group applauding. A wonderful day was planned for Christmas, good food, friends, family and celebration. And everyone there looked forward to tomorrow and beyond. Life was full of love and happiness, and the future was bright for them all. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
