Chapter 35
The four of them lazed around for another day before Lynn and Brendan flew back to New York and Gerry and Ann took off toward Romania. Lynn still thought it was funny that Gerry agreed to fly to Vienna and take the train the rest of the way. “It’s like a 17 hour trip,” she said with a confused smile.
“Well you know Ann,” Gerry replied, “She wanted to see the sun rise over the mountains.” Ann laughed at this comment.
“If I had it my way,” she said, “We would have gone from here to Vienna, Vienna to Budapest and then Budapest to Bucharest. But that would have taken nearly 24 hours, so Gerry vetoed it.”
“Score one for Gerry,” Brendan said letting out a laugh. “She let you veto something!” Brendan patted him on the back while Ann scowled at him.
“I let you make decisions on things,” Ann said.
Gerry suppressed a chuckle. Lynn looked at him and asked, “Who did all the planning while you two were in London?” Gerry gave a slight nod to Ann whose expression grew angrier. “I rest my case,” Lynn finished with a satisfied smile.
“You got to pick a museum we went to,” Ann said harshly.
“Well yeah, but I picked one that you would have picked, had you known it was there.” Ann was starting to give him the death stare. “Calm down sweetie. I like not having to make decisions like that and you do. But when it comes to a 24 hour train ride across Europe, I put my foot down.”
Ann thought about it and her expression softened. “Well I guess we are just a perfect match,” she said with a smile as she climbed on the Gerry's lap.
Lynn made a face and said, “Excuse me while I go puke.” This made everyone laugh, even Ann. The truth was that Gerry did get sick of the lovey dovey shit every once and a while, but it was part of Ann. So he ended up loving it even when he really didn’t want to.
The next morning was filled with goodbyes. “Ann,” Lynn said before she got on the plane, “I will see you in a week, calm down.”
“But I am gonna miss you,” she replied with a tear or two.
Brendan took this opportunity to make a joke at Ann’s expense. With a fake tear filled voice he turned to Gerry and said, “Oh my gosh, I am just going to miss you so much.” At which point he threw himself onto Gerry who had caught what was going on and decided to play along.
Gerry began to “sob” on Brendan’s shoulder. “I, I just don’t know what I am going to do with out you.”
Ann looked at what was happening and slapped both of them. “Stop making fun of me.” But when Brendan and Gerry got over the searing pain in their arms, they looked up to see that Ann was smiling.
“I couldn’t resist,” Brendan said with a puppy dog look.
“You can be such a jackass sometimes, you know that,” Lynn said laughingly.
“I do.”
Lynn and Brendan boarded their plane and were off to New York. A few hours later Gerry and Ann were in Vienna. Their train didn’t leave until six and it was around noon. So they decided to explore for a while. They ended up eating at a tiny pub just down the street from the train station. Of course, Ann had to stop at a tourist shop to get some little knick-knacks for the family. To Gerry this was somewhat funny as they had to buy another bag to fit all of her gifts in. They had thus far bought 8 bottles of liquor (the kind of thing that one could never get back in the states), several old books for her father, a host of stuffed animals for Gerry’s niece and Ann’s niece and nephew, and a few other things. Ann’s favorite purchase was an umbrella with the London Underground stations on it. Gerry could only imagine how much more she was going to buy. It seemed that she got everyone she knew something from every country they were in.
Finally it was time to get on the train. There was a dinning car where they ate their dinner which was not really anything to speak about. To be honest, there was better food in coach on a plane. They were traveling first class though, which got them benches that turned into beds and a wash basin. Not the greatest of accommodations, but Ann didn’t care. She was having a great time watching the landscapes go by. And as far as Gerry was concerned, as long as Ann was happy, he was too.
When they got back from dinner, they decided to watch a movie on Ann’s portable DVD player. Unfortunately for Gerry, the only movies that Ann had brought were they Harry Potter series. “Do we have to?” he asked knowing the answer.
“It’s one of them or 1776.” Gerry gave her a look and grabbed “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” from her bag. They got comfortable, Gerry with his back to the window and Ann with her head in his lap and the DVD player resting on a pillow that was on her stomach.
Though it was one of Ann’s favorite movies, she fell asleep about an hour into it. This left Gerry to actually pay attention to the movie with out the constant interruptions of Ann trying to explain what was in the book that was left out of the movie. It wasn’t that he didn’t like the story, as it was well written; he just didn’t understand the fascination with it. It made sense to him that kids would get excited about the movies and about the books, but not adults. The way Ann would get about the movies and how in the six months they had been dating she had read the books at least twice. What he did like was how the story filled her with joy. There was a certain way she would explain the story and how intent she was that certain characters must not die, that put a smile on his face. If he had to guess, he would say that the only thing she loved more was music. Yes, there were times when even he didn’t rank that high. When the movie was over, Gerry placed the player on the floor, the pillow behind his head, and fell asleep.
Gerry awoke around 8 hours later to find Ann sitting across from him reading her book, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. Ann heard once that the English versions of the books were slightly different so when they got to London, they went to a book shop. When Ann read a few pages and saw that they were different, she insisted that she had to read them as well. So here she was, starting the series for the third time in six months.
As Gerry watched her, every once and a while she would look out the window. Seeing that he was awake, Ann put her book down. “I can't concentrate with you staring at me like that,” she said as she got up and went over to greet him properly. “Brush your teeth, so we can go get breakfast. I’m starving.”
When they arrived in the dinning car, it was almost empty, which was great because they could sit anywhere they wanted. Ann made sure to pick a booth that gave her a perfect view of the sunrise. It was a beautiful burnt orange and pink with streaks of purple and deep red. Ann convinced Gerry to get up and come to her side of the booth to see it. He let out a small sigh at the beauty. “I never thought I would ever see something so dramatic,” he said.
“We might have to come here more often,” Ann said with a smile. “Finally there is something that is stranger and, as you said, more dramatic than anything else, even our relationship.”
“I don’t know if I should take offence to that or not.”
“Don’t worry, a little drama never hurt anyone.”
When they arrived at the train station in Bucharest, there was a nice big car to pick them up and take them to their hotel. As they drove, Gerry, who had been grinning ever since they got there, could no longer hold back his excitement. “Ann, guess what?”
“What?”
“Well I know how much you wanted to go to Dracula’s Castle and see al of the other super old buildings here in Romania, so I booked us on a personal tour all of the Dracula sites. We begin the Dracula Tour today.”
“Are you serious? I was wondering why you looked happier than me. You are the greatest.” Ann grabbed him and kissed him hard. “You are defiantly getting rewarded for this later,” she said with a smirk.

The next morning they were off on their journey around Romania. Their guide knew English, which was great, and thought it funny that Ann was so interested with the history of the area. For the next eight days, Gerry and Ann went all around the area know as Transylvania.
When they arrived at the castle called Dracula’s Castle, Ann was amazed. The castle was built in the 14th century and restored and expanded in the last half of the 15th century by Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula). Although the castle was in ruins and was in the process of being repaired, it still had an eeriness about it that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. She was uneasy about the place, but she was fascinated by all that had happened there over seven centuries. The castle was built on a huge hill and, before the stairs were built, one would have to almost walk with their noses to the ground because the hill was so steep. Ann could tell that many people had lost their lives in the fruitless pursuit of taking over the castle.
There were less freaky moments on the trip. In the city of Sibiu, where Vlad was buried, Ann and Gerry had the chance to dine at the table of a farmer. It was amazing the amount of hospitality they received. The food was some of the best she had ever had and the memory of the youngest daughter blushing when Gerry told her in Romanian that she was pretty would stay in her mind forever.
When they returned to New York, Ann was glad to be back, but sad she had to leave. There was something about her trip to Europe that was life changing. She felt drawn to the soil that was so rich in mystery. Somehow she knew, it wouldn’t be long before she returned.
A week later, Gerry left for Toronto to begin filming his newest movie, Stolen. For the first time in a while, Gerry got to play the bad guy. True, he was the bad guy in Dracula 2000 and he wasn’t all that nice in Phantom, but this time he got to break up a family. His character kidnapped the child of a politician in order to get the politician to admit he had done something illegal. He was a little wary about playing such an asshole, but Ann told him that the few times she had seen him angry, all she wanted him to do was ravage her over and over again. “Other than getting me hot, it will certainly make your female fans happy,” she had said one day. “I was reading on a fan site that they wanted to see you play a bad guy.” After that, Gerry didn’t really have any reservations about the role.
There was a tearful goodbye the day he left. Ann wasn’t going to be able to visit him except for the last week of shooting. The month in Europe had made her managers a little stressed about the next album. She promised them she would record while Gerry was gone. She seemed to be able to focus more when he was gone. They talked every night that Gerry wasn’t on set and by the time Ann left to go see him, Lynn noticed calm had fallen over the apartment. “She whines too much when he is gone,” Lynn said with a smile. “At least it is quieter now that she is gone.”
“All the more reason for us not to be,” Brendan replied deviously. Lynn laughed when she picked her up, threw her over his shoulder, and carried her into the bedroom.
