Kelly and Carrie sat side by side at the dinner table with Stephen at the head of the table and Carole across from him. Stephanie had bailed on joining them, having to tend to her kids.
“So, “ Stephen began after they’d finished grace and were starting to eat their supper. “Kelly?”
“Yes, sir,” she turned to him, as she bounced her knee nervously.
“Well, this is quite different than what I pictured…” he looked between them. “I still have to ask. What are your intentions with my daughter?”
Kelly glanced quickly at Carrie as she felt the blonde’s hand slide to her knee reassuringly before turning her attention back to him. “Well, sir. I intend to be with her as long as she’ll have me.”
Carrie beamed as she looked to her parents, hoping to be able to read them.
He nodded encouraging her to continue.
“I know this definitely caught both of us by surprise, but I cannot help the way I feel about her. Well, you both, “ she looked to Carole and back to Stephen. “You both know what an amazing person she is. The fact that I get to have her in my life…well, it’s pretty awesome,” she laughed nervously.
“Kel…” Carrie sighed, nudging her shoulder.
“What,” she faced Carrie. “ It’s true. I love being around you, knowing that I’ll get to share this whole adventure with you.”
“And what an adventure it’s been,” Carrie smiled.
“I mean, I know it’s not going to be all sunshines and butterflies,” she looked cautiously at Carrie’s parents. She knew that things could very well be difficult to both of them, but she was willing to take that risk and she hoped she could show them that.
“We’ll have trials and possibly challenging times ahead.” She pressed on as she saw Stephen frown slightly.
“But,” she reached for Carrie’s hand. “I think I speak for both of us when I say that as long as we have each other and the support of our families, I think we’ll be ok.”
Carrie just nodded, sniffling and wiping away a tear with her free hand.
Stephen and Carole exchanged a sad smile before he spoke. “Have you both really thought this through,” his face showed genuine concern for both of them.
“Yes,” Carrie spoke up. “I love her, Daddy. I honestly can’t see me without her. It’s gonna be hard, I know. But as long as you and Mama are there for me, for us, we’ll be alright.”
“You know you have our support,” Carole nodded. “So, Kelly,” she smiled. “How do your parents feel about this?” There wasn’t an accusation to her tone, just curiosity.
“Well,” Kelly shifted. “They don’t know yet…”
“Oh,” Carole’s smile faded slightly. “I’m guessing you’re planning on telling them?”
“Um,” Kelly fidgeted, suddenly finding the napkin on her lap quite interesting. “I was thinking of saving it till the wedding.”
“What,” Stephen’s jaw dropped disapprovingly.
“Kel,” Carrie practically shrieked, shaking her head. “She’s kidding,” she shrugged to her parents. “She has a tendency to make jokes when she gets nervous.”
Kelly blushed and nodded. “I’m sorry. Bad time for jokes. In all seriousness, I do want to tell my parents. My brother and best friend, she’s like another sister, they already know. I just, well, I haven’t had time to really see my family and I don’t want to spring it on them.”
“That’s understandable, sweetie,” Carole nodded. “But you do have to tell them. They deserve to learn it from you.”
“You think,” Kelly smiled brightly. “Maybe you can call my mom?”
Carole laughed as Carrie swatted her arm. “Kelly Brianne!”
“I need to work on those jokes,” she smiled apologetically. “Sorry. I do agree with you. I have a break in about three weeks. I think I’m gonna fly my parents to meet up with me in Nashville.”
“There you go,” Carole encouraged her.
“Wait,” Carrie spoke up. “Isn’t that when the CMAs are going on?”
“Yeah,” Kelly smiled.
“Can you tell them before the awards,” she asked with a slight smile.
“Why’s that?”
“’Cause,” she lowered her gaze. “I want you to be my date.”
“Aw, Care,” Kelly beamed, squeezing her hand. “I would love to be your date.”
“Good,” she sighed. “Though, you will be sharing the date duties with my mom. I had already promised her she could go with me,” the blonde smiled at her mother.
“Care,” Carole chimed in. “You don’t have to. I think you have a better offer.”
“No,” Kelly shook her head. “I think you should come with us. I insist.”
“Okay,” the older woman relented.
“What about you, Mr. Underwood,” Kelly smiled at him.
“Oh, no,” he waved her off. “I don’t do the fancy awards thing. Never have, never will. This is really Carrie’s dream.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah,” Carrie shrugged slightly. “He’s not fond of the spotlight.”
“I can’t stand some of the things they say about my baby. Staying away is best for everyone,” he shrugged.
“I can understand that,” Kelly nodded. “Well, I’d definitely still like to have you both over to the house.”
“I’m sure that can be arranged,” Carole smiled, taking Steven’s hand.
“So…” Carrie yawned. “I hate to be a party pooper, but I’ve gotta get some sleep.”
“Aw,” Kelly pouted. “Well, good night.”
Carrie looked over at her puzzled. “Aren’t you coming?”
“Uh, hello,” the Texan shook her head for emphasis. “This table isn’t gonna clear itself. I figured I’d do the dishes since your mom cooked.”
Carole and Carrie shared a laugh, as Carrie took her hand. “Honey, there’s a dishwasher in the kitchen, you know. “
“And? They still need to get loaded in. Don’t worry,” she let go of Carrie’s hand. “I can manage.”
“Well, ok.”
“Kelly,” Carole broke in as Kelly began to gather the dishes. “Thanks for helping. I’ll get your room ready for you.”
Kelly stopped dead in her tracks as she and Carrie shared a sad smile. They hadn’t really thought about their sleeping arrangements for that night. Carrie snuck a wink as she stood next to her. She leaned over to kiss her cheek before whispering, “I’ll see you in bit…I know where you’ll be.”
“Good night, Care Bear,” Steven kissed her forehead as he walked by her on his way to the den.
“Night, Dad. Night, Mama,” she waved walking towards the stairs.
==========
Kelly attempted to get comfortable on the strange bed after changing. She traveled constantly, but she still wasn’t used to sleeping on different beds. That’s why she loved sleeping in her tour bus instead of hotels.
She readjusted the pillow for the fourth time wondering if Carrie had fallen asleep. Part of her wanted to go searching for her, but she wasn’t sure which room was Carrie’s and didn’t want to get caught. She had to laugh at feeling like a little kid sneaking around.
A gentle noise on the other side of the door caught her attention. Before she had the time to get out of the bed, the door opened and in came Carrie.
The blonde smiled mischievously before turning to close the door quietly. She tiptoed her way to the bed as Kelly sat up and leaned against the headboard.
“Hi,” she whispered.
“Sorry,” Carrie spoke softly. “I was trying to make sure they were asleep.”
“It’s ok,” she reached for her hands. “Now…”
“Now…” Carrie repeated as she slid on to the bed, crawling slowly over Kelly. She held herself up over her before slowly lowering and pressing their bodies together as she captured her lips.
Kelly’s hands made their way to the blonde’s neck before they pulled apart. “Now,” she let her hands roam. “I believe we continue what we started earlier…”
Carrie sighed. “Good,” she pressed her knee against Kelly. “Cause we’ve got some catching up to do.”
Kelly just nodded, unable to speak as she pulled Carrie’s face towards her. The blonde barely had to do anything to set her off.
=========
“Babe,” Carrie whispered against her neck, making Kelly shiver.
“What,” she drawled.
“I have to get going,” she whispered sadly.
“What, why,” the Texan asked wrapping her arms tighter against Carrie’s waist.
“Sweetie,” she giggled. “It’s morning already, my dad gets up early, So I’ve got sneak back into my room.”
“No,” Kelly pouted with a laugh. “I can’t believe we’re sneaking around. We’re grown ups,” she shook her head.
“I know,” Carrie ran her hand down Kelly’s hip. “But parents never think of their kids as such. Trust me. I love my parents and they have been amazingly supportive, but I think we should be respectful of their feelings."
Kelly sighed in agreement. "You're right. So," she snuck a quick kiss. "I love you, and I'll see you downstairs in a few?"
"Yep," the blonde smiled, slipping on her robe as she stood. "I love you, too," she walked towards the door.
