Everlasting Love(Pt37)
Joe pulled himself up to sit beside Sav, who was struggling to sit up.
“ow…” Sav hissed.
“What, are you ok?” Joe quickly asked him.
“I think I hurt myself when I fell.”
“Where?” Joe was running his fingers through his hair, dropping down to his arms, then chest.
Sav slapped his hands away. “My knee.”
Glancing down at his knee, the slight discoloration of a bruise was beginning to appear. “You sure do bruise easier since you got sick.” Joe started rubbing it gently to make sure the knee cap wasn’t dislodged.
“That hurt’s Joe…stop it!”
“What happened in here?” Jack said coming toward the bed.
“Nothing.” Joe casual replied.
”Nothing? Then why is there blood on Rick’s neck? I demand to know what happened here!”
Joe looked all around the room, then straight at him. “Who are you talking to Jack?”
“You!”
“Excuse me, don’t demand anything from me. This is my house. If anybody should be demanding anything, it should be Rick.”
“I tried to stop him Jack.” Sav started. “But he’s stronger than I am and hard to resists when he…Joe…he…uh…took my blood.”
“You fool…” Jack spat. “…do you have any idea wha….”
Joe slowly stood up, meeting his gaze with a heated glare of his own. “You’re calling me a fool. Let me tell you something Jack…” Joe shoved him backwards. “..this fool knows the truth…” shoved him again. “..you better start talking or I will.”
“You only saw what you wanted to see Joe.”
“Oh really, then you tell me, what did I see in his blood Jack?”
“Your making yourself believe that Rick isn’t sick anymore. When the fact of the matter is, he is. The tainted blood that he took from Amber is still in his system, not as much as 2 yrs ago, but enough to make him weak and depend on some one else.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it.”
“Believe what you want.”
Joe slammed him against the wall, the wood giving way from the force. “I believe in what I see, the images in my mind, what I feel running through my veins.”
“We could take him back to The Underground, if his recovery is jeopardized by anyone, including you.”
“Try it and I’ll kill you before you even get to the door.” Joe growled in his face.
“Joe tha’…” Mal started.
“Stay out of this Malvin. You lied to Mal too, didn’t you? He didn’t know what you and Gabriel were doing.”
Jack saw the threatening glint in Joe’s eyes, gut instincts told him to tell Joe whatever he wanted to know or he would be dead in a matter of seconds. “He knew only what we told him.”
“You’ve decided to tell the truth …good.” Joe sneered. “What is in this so called medicine you’ve been giving him?”
“65% is Caprizone, that is what fought the poison in his blood. The other 10% is Chromelance, it keeps him weak.15%, the AIDS virus, sets off the stomach acids, makes him unable to gain to much weight, 10% of Juliann blood. Over the last 17 months, we’ve decreased the percentage of the AIDS virus, increased the others.”
“I tasted the poison in his blood, it’s barely there and it didn’t make me sick. Does Rick still need the medicine?”
“We could probably take him off of it, but I wouldn’t advise it.”
“Consider him off. Now pack your shit and get out of my house.”
“You don’t know what you’re doing, or how to take care of him if he has a relapse.” Jack told him.
“I know exactly what I’m doing, protecting what is mine, from people like you, who betray their friends.”
“If I leave now, it’ll be a grave mistake Joe.”
“The only mistake I made, was never forcing myself to get Rick out of there a year ago.” Joe took a few steps away from him. “I suggest you leave now, Nick will be here soon and he will not be as forgiving as I am.”
Jack looked over at Sav, the stunned expression on his face gave him pause to even try and explain, he knew that Sav wouldn’t listen to anything he had to say at that moment. How would he explain that Gabriel had deliberately kept him ill, hoping that one day he would leave Joe, come to live with him in The Underground and eventually become his lover. That chance presented itself when Rachel came to them, seeking their help and knowledge on this type of sickness. Jack wanted to tell Sav that Gabriel threatened him with a slow painful death, if he didn’t cooperate in helping him.
“I’m sorry Rick.” Jack held his eyes until Sav looked away. “I never meant to hurt you, keep you away from your family like this, but it was out of my hands. Maybe one day you’ll let me explain, see it in my blood how sorry I am about this.” Jack glanced at Joe and Malvin, then left the room.
“Make sure he leaves Malvin.” Joe said as he went over to Sav, sitting in the bed. “They have a lot of nerve for doing that.”
“Yeah.” Sav stared at his hands.
“How do you feel?”
Sav scooted down, turning away from him, pulling the blankets up around his chin. “I want to be alone.” He mumbled.
Joe placed his hand lightly on his shoulder. “Rick…” he jerked away. “…don’t shut me out.” When he didn’t get any response, he stood up. “Ok, get some rest, I’ll check on you later.” Joe dimmed the lights to a soft glow, leaving the door ajar he went down to his bedroom.
Most of the lights were on, chasing away the shadows in the corner’s, several suitcases lay open on the bed, Evelyn’s clothes neatly fold inside.
“Evelyn.” Joe called out glancing around the room.
She emerged from the master bath, carry a case with her personal items.
“Are you going on vacation?” Joe asked her.
“No.”
“Moving to another room in the house?”
“No.” she retorted and went inside the large closet, coming back out, her arms laden with clothes.
“Ok, then where are you going?”
“I’m leaving, going to a hotel.”
“You’re taking an awful lot of clothes for short stay in a hotel.”
“It’s not a short stay. I’m leaving you.” Evelyn zipped one suitcase closed. “I called a lawyer tonight. I have an appointment with him tomorrow to start divorce proceedings.”
“Why are you doing this to us?”
“Us…there hasn’t been us for a while now.”
”I’ll do better, can’t we work this out?”
“No, I’m tired of trying, tired of being left alone in this big house, while you go away for weeks doing whatever it is you do. You never bother to pick up the phone to call, let me know you’re alright.”
“I’ll start doing that.”
Evelyn zipped another suitcase closed. “It’s too late for that.”
“This is about tonight isn’t it?”
“It has a lot to do with my decision.” She went over to the dresser, pulling out undergarments and putting those in the last case.
“Whatever I did, I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”
“Yes it will Joe, because it’s a part of you, a part that has always frightened me. I never know when you’re going to snap, like you did tonight.”
”I had to find out the truth about Sav, you wanted to stop me from doing that.”
”And did you find out?”
“Yes. He’s not as sick as we were led to believe.”
“Good, I’m happy for him.”
Joe watched her zip the last case closed. “Evelyn…”
“Don’t try and talk me out of this, I’ve made up my mind.” Walking toward him, she stopped in front of him.
“Don’t go please.” Joe whispered.
Evelyn reached up and cupped his cheek. “I have to, I’ll always love you, but I just can’t do this anymore.”
Joe was ready to get on his knees and beg her not to leave, but the strong determination he saw in her eyes made him realize nothing he said or did would change her mind. “Call me if you need anything.”
”You’ll be the first to know.” Evelyn told him with a small smile.
“Mom.” Philip said from the door. “Are you ready?”
”Yes.” She answered, her gaze holding Joe’s. “Get the rest of my bags.” Dropping her hand from his face. “Bye Joe, take care of yourself and Rick.” She followed Philip out of the bedroom, leaving Joe standing in the middle.
Joe waited until he heard the front door close behind her, then made his way down stairs for a stiff glass of blood wine.
Taking a seat on the couch, Joe pinched the bridge of his nose, the dull throb in the back of his head making its presents known. ‘Being immortal is not all its cracked up to be.’ Joe snorted and leaned back. “We may live forever, but still get the occasional headaches and sour stomachs…uuugg.”
“Talking to yourself Joe?” Malvin asked as he joined him.
“Yeah.” Joe opened his eyes and looked over at Mal, who took a seat across from him. “Is Jack gone?”
“Yes.”
“At least it was only him that I had to kick out.”
”What happened tonight?”
“Evelyn wants a divorce, packed her stuff and left.”
“Why did she do that?”
“Something about she couldn’t do this anymore, being with me and everything that comes with it. The way I acted tonight, I guess seeing that side of me made up her mind.”
“You don’t seem to upset about her leaving.”
“I am, believe me.”
”What are you going to do to get her back?”
”Nothing. Evelyn is not going to give me a third chance Mal. I was lucky to get the second one. I’ll just make sure that she is never in the need for anything.” Joe ran his hand down his face, taking a deep breath and blew it out.
”What about Sav?”
”What about him?”
“Are you sure you know what your doing, how to take care of him?”
“Yes…and you’ll be here too.”
”I really didn’t know anything Joe. If I did, I would have taken him out of there myself.”
”I didn’t think you did, besides, I know you better than any of them.”
“So, are you going to tell me what it was like?”
”Intense…very intense. I wouldn’t recommended you taking Sav’s blood, because your young…vampire years anyway.” Joe chuckled. “Actually gave me a headache. After I finished taking what I needed for answers, it hurt, not my stomach, just everything, all the pain that Sav has gone through, his emotions, he still harbors guilt for what he did to Amber. I don’t know…I’m still muddling through everything. I think I’m going to lye down for awhile, work it all out. With all that happened tonight I’m tired.” Joe sat his glass on the table. “I’ll tell you more about it later, then we can sit down and discuss a strategy on getting him completely well.”
“I’ll be thinking about that while you’re resting.” Mal told him as Joe went up the stairs.
He went back to Sav’s room, easing down on the mattress so not to wake him. Joe scooted behind him, slipped his arm over his waist. He watched him sleep a moment before leaning down to softly kiss his exposed neck.
“Everything’s going to be alright now.” He whispered.
Sav mumbled in his sleep, moving closer to him. Once he was settled again, Joe pulled the thin sheet up and lay down, waiting for sleep to claim him.
