When Night Falls(Pt37) Langauge
Joe turned his head the other way, rubbing his face in the pillow to stop the tickle on his nose. Stretching his arm to the other side to find it cold and empty. Scooting over he buried his nose in Sav’s pillow, inhaling deeply of his scent that clang to the fabric. Opening his eyes Joe stared out the tinted glass at the fading sunlight, hugging the pillow tightly to his chest.
‘I drove him away again. Why do I keep blaming him, when I know that Sav did everything in his power to save Thomas’? Risked his life to get there. He doesn’t deserve my cold harsh treatment after what he went through with Armand. Not my hateful words or deafening silence whenever he’s near. Nick is taking care of him now…I should be doing that. I live to do that. Everyone else has moved on with their lives…gone home. Why can’t I do the same?’
Joe’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his bedroom door slamming into the wall. Muffled footsteps on carpet as the person came to the bed, blankets ripped from his hand and thrown back.
“Daddy get up.” The firmness in Amber’s voice evident. “You’ve been in this bed for days. Now get up.” Nudging his shoulder with her hand, she got a groan for a response. “Are you going to spend the rest of your life in bed being miserable?” She stood there, hands on her hips waiting for him to move. “Get up Dad.” Each word pronounced clear and clipped.
Joe blindly reached for the blankets. “Go away.” He grumbled.
Amber snatched them away again. “Not until you get up.” She reached for the pillow, knowing that would get him moving.
“Hey…give that back!”
“No!” Amber jumped away from his swiping arm. “Wouldn’t you rather be hugging the real thing and not his pillow?”
“That’s kind of hard to do since he isn’t here.”
“Then do something about it!” Amber huffed and spun on her heels.
Joe swung his legs over the edge and took off after her. “Amber…give me back that pillow.”
Crystal was coming out of her room when Joe appeared in the hall. “Oh wow, he’s up.”
“Save your sarcastic remarks for someone else.” Joe growled pushing past her to follow Amber downstairs. “Goddamnit Amber, I want that back right now!”
“Hey Joe!” Crystal took off after him. “Aren’t you being over dramatic about a stupid pillow?” Coming to a halt in the living room, she caught the end of Amber’s sentence.
“…physically harm me for a pillow.”
“Give it to me.” Joe growled.
“Your behavior is ridicules Dad!…” Amber threw the pillow at him. “…over a fucking pillow. Get your head out of your ass and wake up.”
“Don’t you talk to me like that!” Joe’s loud voice bounced around the room.
”Why not? Somebody has too, beside there is no one else here to do it, you’ve driven everyone else away.”
“Good!” Joe clenched the pillow to his chest and fell on the couch.
“I didn’t have anywhere else to go.” Crystal said taking the seat across from him.
“You can’t keep doing this to yourself Dad. Nothing good will come from it.”
“Yes there will. I get to drown in my misery.” Joe shot back.
“uuggg…” Amber threw her hands up. “…you can be so fucking stubborn sometimes. What is it going to take to get through to you?”
”For you to leave me alone.” Joe grumbled, lying down on the couch.
Amber boldly stalked over and started yanking on the pillow. “There is nothing I would love to do more than to get out of this house and away from you.” She managed to rip the pillow from his grasp again and stepped back as Joe leaped from the couch.
“What is stopping you from leaving?” He spat in her face, grabbing the pillow again, tearing it from her fingers.
“I can’t leave because of you.”
”Me!” Joe yelled.
“Yes. Do depression, starvation and death ring a bell to you?”
“It would be a better place than where I am now.” Joe mocked.
“You’ve put yourself there.” Crystal cheerfully spoke up.
“Just go Amber. Go back to your happy little life with Scott, hop around the globe and have fun. I don’t need you, Phil or anybody to fucking lecture me. I want to be left alone!”
“That’s right. You don’t have Phil, he and Gail left yesterday. Sav left a few weeks ago. You keep this up Dad and you will have no one. You will be moping around this big house…alone!”
Joe crinkled his face in scowl and flopped back on the couch, hugging the pillow to his chest again.
“Go out and find him Daddy.” Amber’s voice softened again as she sat beside him, grasping his hand between hers.
“He’s not going to listen to me.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Why do I do this to myself?” Joe dropped his head to the back of the couch, staring at the ceiling.
“Because you’re stubborn, wallowing in self pity and blaming the wrong person. To busy hating yourself, everyone…and Sav, when you should be paying attention to what is going on around you.”
Joe raised his head to glare at her. “Thank you Crystal.”
”Your welcome Joe. I could add a few other things, but I think you get the point.” She smiled at him. “So, are you going out to find him?”
“I wouldn’t know what to say.” Joe laid the pillow across his lap, smoothing the non-existent wrinkles.
“Start with I’m sorry.” Crystal said.
“That won’t work.” Joe mumbled.
“Try I love you and I’m sorry.”
“That might.”
“Don’t doubt him or yourself Joe.”
“Your awful wise tonight Crystal.”
“I had practice before remember. Tell you the right thing and you will eventually act on it.”
Joe managed a small smile. “Yeah I guess you did.”
Amber placed her hand on his chest. “Go with what your heart is telling you Dad, you can’t go wrong.”
”It’s telling me I’m a fool.”
“We already knew that.” Crystal tucked her legs under her. “Use that bond thingy and go find him.”
Amber gently tugged the pillow away. “I agree, go find him. Kiss him silly, glare at him with that look you give him, that has him stammering like a shy boy...beg for his forgiveness.”
Joe smiled at the mental image from her words. “I love that look of shyness he gives me when I do. But…I did try to tell him before he left. He..he didn't believe me.”
“Go find him, make him understand that you don’t blame him for Thomas. Sav will listen and understand.”
Joe looked to his daughter, tears glistening in his eyes. “I don’t know where to start looking, he’s blocking me.”
“I can’t feel him either. Try the pub first. He was going there to meet Nick right.” Amber reminded him.
“You could try what most men hate to do. Ask for direction to Savage.”
Joe looked at Crystal, a mock grin that quickly dropped.
Squeezing his hand, Amber leaned forward to kiss his cheek. “Take a shower before you go….you stink.” She stood up, taking the pillow with her. Crystal giggled at what Amber said.
“Very funny.” Joe grumbled as he stood up, stalking up the stairs to his room.
"Do you think he will find him?"
Amber looked at the young woman across the room. "I don't know. We have been looking, asking around. He and Nick have been seen, but no one knows where they are going next or where they are staying."
Crystal stood up and stretched. "Maybe one of the family can pretend to be seriously hurt or something. That would bring him home."
"That is a very good idea. But under the circumstances, it could go horribly wrong. Once Sav realized it was a ruse, he would...I don't want to think about the outcome."
"Desperate measure, some times calls for desperate actions."
Amber stood up, going over to Crystal, pulling her into her arms. "Lets hope Dad finds him tonight."

A few hours later Joe nervously stood in front of the pub, playing with the lower buttons of his black silk shirt. Taking a deep breath he pushed the doors open and went inside. He rolled his eyes as ‘I Will Survive’ thumped through the building. ‘How fitting of a song to play in a pub that catered to vampires and its 70’s Disco night on top of that.’ He thought going down the steps and into the throng of people.
Stopping the first person he knew, getting close enough so that she could hear him. “Have you seen Rick?”
“Not tonight.” She yelled back.
Thanking her, Joe moved through the room, asking the same question and getting offers for drinks or stepping into the back rooms. No one had seen Sav tonight. Going up to the bar, Joe hesitated before he tapped Eric on the shoulder.
Turning around, Eric’s smile widened when he saw who it was. “Hello Joe.”
”Have you seen Rick?”
“You’ve lost your boyfriend again!” Eric exclaimed.
“Never mind Eric, forget I asked you.” Joe was about to turn around when Eric stopped him.
“No need to get defensive. Let’s forget about what happened years ago and be friends. I want to start by letting you know of my deepest sympathy for Thomas and Tracy. Thomas was well known in the Community for his kindness and will be missed.”
“Thanks Eric.” Joe replied, looking at the floor. “As for the friend’s part, I’ll work on it.”
“Now for your question. Sav was here a few nights ago with Nick. They went to the back rooms and I didn’t see him the rest of the night. They both left the following evening just as I came in."
”Did you hear anything about where they may have gone?”
“No, I’m sorry. If I do, I’ll be sure to call you.”
“Thanks Eric.” Joe tried to smile.
“Let me buy you a drink. Looks like you could use a stiff one.”
“No thanks, maybe some other time. Thanks again.”
”Anytime Joe.” Eric replied with a smile.
Joe turned around and surveyed the room, hoping to see Sav milling around in the crowd. Weaving his way through the people, turning down more offers of drinks, Joe made it back out into the cool night air. Scanning the street both ways, he crossed and went down to the restaurant that they frequented. Having no luck there, he went back outside to the alley. Taking to the air, he searched the city below for Sav, then to a few places they visited in the outskirts of the city. His all night search proved pointless as he landed softly on the small sloping hill in his backyard. Dropping to the ground Joe drew in a deep breath, scrubbing his hand over his face. He watched the approaching sunrise until the bright rays drove him inside.
Joe pushed the door open and saw Crystal sitting at the kitchen table, dressed and ready for school, reading over her notes for another exam as she ate breakfast.
She took note of his long tired face. “Did you find him?”
Joe didn’t look at her as he made his to the back staircase. “No.”
**
The next few days, Joe busied himself around the house…cleaning. This drew knowing looks from Crystal, having been down this road with him before. She cut late summer flowers from the garden and placed them around the house. Carrying a nice arrangement of red and yellow roses with a handful of white daises into his room, she placed them on the table by the window. Breathing deeply of their sweet fragrance, she smiled and left the room.
Joe came in several hours later carrying Waterford Crystal candle holders and bottle of his best blood wine tucked under his arm. He looked up and saw the beautiful flowers on the table. Smiling to himself, he knew that Crystal had put them there. Sitting his items down and arranging them to his liking, then leaning over to smell the flowers.
Crystal came in a few minutes later seeing Joe rubbing the soft petals of one rose between his fingers. “I love the rose garden.” Her voice soft and caring.
Joe smiled and kissed her cheek. “Thank you.”
“You forgot these.” Crystal held up the wine goblets, then sat them on the table beside the wine.
“Thank you again…for everything.”
Rising up on her toes, Crystal returned the kiss to his cheek. “Goodnight Joe.”
“Night sweetheart.” Joe replied as she left his room. Taking a look around the room making sure he didn’t forget anything, Joe lit the candle and sat down in the chair. “He should be home tonight. All I have to do is wait.”
