Chapter 38
The Friday after Thanksgiving - mid-afternoon
*******************
“Mom? Dad?” David called as he entered the kitchen with James close on his heels.
The kitchen was empty.
James glanced at the clock. It was nearly three o’clock. David’s parents had probably finished their lunch ages ago.
David wandered over to the stove to see what was in the pot. He lifted the lid.
“Soup,” he said, turning to James. “Want some? Looks like Dad’s carrot and orange.”
“Your father makes soup?” James asked in surprise.
“Yes and he’s much better at it than I am,” Patti said, appearing in the doorway. “There’s home-made cheese and onion bread too if you’d care for some, James.”
“Ooo, Mom! You spoil me.”
“It’s David’s favourite,” she explained. “I made a batch while you…”
She hesitated.
“… were resting.”
“Er… yes, please,” James said smiling at her, silently thanking her for her discretion. Whilst he knew she must have guessed what they’d been up to for the past couple of hours he didn’t thin cou could cope with having to admit it openly to her, however understanding she might be about her son’s new relationship.
“I’ll just pop it in the oven for a few minutes to heat up. It’s better warm,” she said. “Sit down, James. You look a bit pale. Are you feeling all right, Sweetie?”
She placed her hand on his forehead to check his temperature.
“Yes… I think so…”
“Hmm, you feel a bit warm…”
“I’m just tired,” he replied, “but thank you for asking.”
He doubted his own mother would have noticed however high a fever he might be running.
“Not being allowed to get a tan doesn’t help,” David said. “They like us to remain as pallid as possible. James does a better job of it than me.”
Patti closed the oven door and set the timer.
“Now what can I get you boys to drink? There’s Red Bull, James…”
James could hardly believe his ears. She’d stocked up especially for him. His own mother couldn’t even remember how he took his coffee or that he hated sprouts and she’d never have gotten anything in just for him.
“Thanks, Patti,” he said. “I can see David’s been telling you all my secrets…”
“Who me?” David said, his face a picture of innocence.
“There’s both regular and sugar free,” Patti continued. “I wasn’t sure which you liked best.”
“I prefer the regular but I really ought to stick to the sugar free,” James added. “I have to watch my weight.”
Patti td tod to face him and looked him up and down before reaching for a can of regular.
“I can’t imagine why,” she said. “You look to me like you could use a few extra pounds.”
“Thanks, Mom,” David said. “That’s just what I keep telling him.”
She handed James the can.
“It’s a holiday, spoil yourself.”
James laughed.
“Thank you…”
He took the can and opened it.
“It’s all right for you,” James said, turning to David. “You have a large frame which, as anyone can see, I don’t… and, besides, I think I only got the job on account of my cheekbones. They’ll probably sack me if I put weight on my face…”
“Oh, Sweetie!” Patti exclaimed. “I’m sure that’s not true. You’re a fine actor and you have a real screen presence. You steal practically every scene you’re in…”
James could feel a blush start to form. He turned away from her and looked to David to rescue him from further embarrassment.
“Hey, Mom!” David exclaimed. “Fellow actor standing here…”
She laughed.
“You know I’m your biggest fan, Darling. I’m sure you’re both destined for stardom… one day.”
David stepped forward and gave his mother a kiss on the cheek.
“Now, make yourself useful, Darling, and stir the soup,” she instructed.

The soup had been delicious and the conversation lively. James was surprised how well informed Patti was about both acting in general and Hollywood in particular. She obviously had a genuine interest in her son’s career. James had been nervous of meeting her but he was already very pleased he had and was enjoying her company enormously. He’d discovered they shared a common interest, something she’d promised they’d discuss further later.
David hadn’t contributed much to the conversation, concentrating instead on eating. He was just finishing his second bowl of soup. James realised that David was probably trying to avoid dominating the conversation himself to allow him to become acquainted with Patti. From time to time their eyes would meet and David had smiled encouragingly but Patti was easy to talk to. He soon found he was relaxed enough to chat without the need for any encouragement.
“Are you sure you won’t have a sandwich, James?” Patti asked, handing David a plate.
“No, really, thank you,” James said.
James watched as David picked up his own sandwich and took a large bite.
“The soup was really good,” James added switching his gaze to Patti, “and the bread was out of this world. I can’t remember the last time I had home-made bread…”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it, Sweetie.”
“Mmm, this is good too, Mom,” David said indicating his sandwich.
Apparently, Patti had made granary bread as well as the cheese and onion.
“Think you could teach me how to make it while we’re here?”
“Yes, of course, Darling.”
“You know what they say,” David began. “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
James laughed.
Patti winked at him.
