Chapter 37 : Nightmare ending
About a week an a half after my first prenatal exam, Glenn and I were heading back to work. I wouldn’t even be on screen until we made the announcement in a month. I just didnt want to be home by myself for the next two weeks. We had to come back to testify at Myra’s trial for attempted murder.
The morning we got back was the day before we were supposed to be at the courthouse. Lori had called to let me know about my blood tests while we were gone, so Glenn inisted I call her and find out if everything was alright. The man is getting paranoid.
So I called Lori. Turns out Everything was completely fine. She said since I was in pretty good shape anyway I had nothing to worry about. I wasn’t allowed to keep up with my hard workouts or anywhere near the ring, but I could still stretch and do yoga. “Walking. I want you to make sure you walk a lot. No heavy lifting or anything but stretching and walking will do you good.”
Ok. Everything done for the baby, we’re good for the next week until I have to go back and ‘give’ more blood.
Joy. Rapture.
The next day Glenn and I headed for the St. Louis County courthouse. We were supposed to meet the prosecutor, Mr. Cramer, at the front desk at 8:30, and instead his assistant was waiting on us.
“Mr. Cramer asked that I bring you to the judge’s chambers. We had trouble contacting you over the last week. Ms. Walker changed her plea to guilty and is going to be sentenced today.”
Glenn looked at her like she was insane. “Don’t tell me she’s going to get off!”
She shook her head. “No Mr. Jacobs. Mr. Cramer and the judge will explain it though. Please follow me.”
We did, going into a back hall and into a judge’s chambers. We walked in, seeing the prosecutor and an older female judge. The prosecutor stood as I came in with Glenn, shaking both our hands and asking us to sit.
“Mr and Mrs. Jacobs, I’m sorry you weren’t informed of the change in plea. Ms. Walker has agreeed to plea guilty in order to get a lesser sentence.”
Glenn sat next to me, looking rather angry at her getting off lightly. “What do you mean a lesser sentence?”
The judge, the Honorable Madeline Redberg, cleared her throat and spoke to Glenn and I, keeping her voice calm.
“Due to the fact this is not her first offense, we have agreed to set sentencing at fifteen years. No Parole, 10 years probation. Nothing off for good behavior. After her release at the end of that time she will not be allowed within 500 feet of you or your family.”
I could feel Glenn getting angry and I gave his hand a squeeze to try and calm him down.
“Now I realize this is not ideal for you. It will guarantee you will not have to worry about her coming after you. This in the long run will make sure it is not a problem. I wish to see her rehabilitated.”
Glenn leaned forward in his seat, looking more than a slight bit angry. I was proud he kept his temper down as he spoke to the Judge. “Your Honor. This woman has made our lives a living hell. I don’t want her to get out and come after my wife and children. Faith could take care of herself if she didn’t have to worry about someone else getting hurt.”
The judge looked over at me, asking a silent question with her eyes. I knew exactly what she was asking, the look in her eyes speaking volumes.
“I’m eleven weeks pregnant. I’m a professional sports entertainer and can’t fight in ring. There is no way I could reasonably defend myself against anyone who came after me like she did.”
The judge nodded, apparently understanding. “For this reason I am sending her to the federal institution in Leavenworth, Kansas. I will assure you that she will not come near you. I know Mr. Jacobs that this doesn’t give you much comfort. This way, you are guaranteed that for the next fifteen years, she will not be threatening you or your family. If we went through with the trial, she might get out of it. The police testimony last week pretty much clinched it for her and she’s going away, but we want an assurance, right?”
I nodded, looking over at Glenn who looked somewhere between furious and exhausted. He looked over at me. “This is our only option.”
“Myra made the decision for us on this one. I just want to let it go and get this over with Glenn. We have other things to worry about, not whether or not she’s going to come after us again. I just want to let it go.”
He nodded, looking at the judge. “Do we have to be there for the sentencing? We already know what’s going to happen.”
Judge Redberg shook her head. “No. There is no need if you don’t want to. I’ll make sure my clerk sends you a letter stating what happened in the proceedings. There is no need for you to suffer anymore and I dont want Mrs. Jacobs in there just in case she does turn chaotic.”
She dismissed us, the prosecutor walking us out. Glenn looking like he felt ten years younger. Mr. Cramer commented as Glenn gave me a hug and was beaming highly. “You sounded so angry about the whole thing Mr. Jacobs. Now you look like you feel light as a feather.”
He looked down at the much shorter man, then looking at me and grinning. “I had to remember, other things are more important to me. I can’t dwell on her. I have a family to worry about.”
The lawyer left us alone after that, Glenn and I leaving to go home. I know seemed anti-climatic to not go see Myra leave. Yet it was better that we just left, to get on with the rest of our life together.
