Kelly sighed as she looked up to find Jessica walking into the break room, closing the door behind her.
"Hey," Jessica nodded.
"If you're just coming to fuss about me being short with Ashley, there's no need--I feel bad enough as is."
"I heard you said some pretty harsh things," she commented, sitting next to her.
"You know, she always runs to you," Kelly noted. "I wonder if you remember that you're my friend in this, too."
"You just said you felt bad, that's usually a sign that you did something," Jessica pointed out.
"But I shouldn't have to feel bad; I've done nothing wrong."
"Were you not a little bit mean?"
"She was being mean to Carrie," Kelly argued. "I'm not gonna sacrafice my friendship with Carrie just to accomidate Ashley's feelings. I never asked her to like me."
"Ok, ok, fair enough," Jessica held her hands up in surrender. "I know you didn't ask for this, Kell...neither did I. You think I like being in the middle of you two? It sucks trying to cater to both of y'alls needs."
"I didn't ask you to cater to my needs."
"Kell..."
"If this is hard for you, I'm going to make it easier. Just don't worry about me, ok? It's obvious Ashley's worse off in this. Deal with her; I'm perfectly fine on my own," Kelly stood, offering a soft nod before walking out.

"So Jebbie couldn't bring you home?" Lyndsey asked as she and Kelly got into her car after work.
"No, she had some stuff she needed to tend to," Kelly frowned, buckling her seatbelt.
"And Carrie's parents don't let her out after dark on weeknights, huh?"
"Yea," she laughed softly.
"Yea, I figured they were that type. She seems a bit sheltered. She's starting to come around though."
"Yea."
"So, this thing Jebbie had to tend to...does it have anything to do with why you've been walking around, lost, all afternoon?"
"We're kinda going through a rough patch."
"Same rough patch as you and Ash?" Lyndsey questioned.
"You noticed that too?"
"Not hard to notice when two of my closest friends do all they can to completely avoid each other."
"I'm not sure what to do," Kelly admitted.
"Maybe taking a little break is a good thing. I mean, I know Mary and I set aside a at least a week every year where we just don't talk to each other. Otherwise, I swear if we didn't, I'd end up throwing her off a bridge or something. A break is a good thing when it comes to best friends. It's just like relationships, you know?"
Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"Ok, well, you don't know. With relationships you need to make time for yourself--you can't do everything together all the time. You'll be at your wits end, and could end up hating the other person. I think a break could be good for all of y'all."
"Maybe so," she nodded. "You know, that actually makes a lot of sense."
"It's what I do," Lyndsey smiled, causing her to giggle.

"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?" Carrie recited, giggling.
Kelly rolled her eyes, "If you don't take this seriously, you're never going to get it."
"What's there to get? They were a bunch of teenagers with raging hormones."
"That's not it at all," she shook her head. "They were in love...love, in it's purest form--when it's untouched by all the troubles and worries that come with adulthood. They loved each other with all they had because they didn't know any other way to love. They hadn't learned the harshness that comes with love yet that makes people jaded."
"Then what was the problem?" Carrie asked, sitting up straight in her spot on the floor.
"They came from different worlds...different societies. Their families hated each other. They would never allow for the two of them be together. I mean, can you imagine what that must be like? To love some one that imensely, and not be able to be with them?"
Carrie looked at her in slight awe.
"Brings about a whole new perspective, huh?"
She nodded.
"So, this scene--the only one scene you seem to know," Kelly teased. "It's not some little rich girl pouting because she can't have the quarterback. It's a girl, desperate to be with the one she loves...she's begging him to choose her over his family, and if he can't, she'll drop hers in a heartbeat just to be with him."
Carrie laughed softly as Kelly jumped onto her bed, wobbling a moment before catching her balance.
"Romeo, Romeo," Kelly began, mustering all the emotion she could. "Wherefore art thou, Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love...and I'll no longer be a Capulet."
Carrie gave an appreciative smile as Kelly jumped down from the bed, bowing to her mock audience. She reached out, taking the Texan's hand, "Well, when you say it like that..." Carrie playfully tugged her down onto her lap. "How about I drop the Montagues, and we run off to Vegas."
Kelly giggled lightly, feeling Carrie leaning in, placing a soft kiss on her lips. She smiled as the taller girl pulled back. "So, I was right?"
"You were right," she nodded. "The guy could write...but that doesn't make him any less of a fairy in tights..."
"Fair enough," Kelly grinned.

"Carrie," Carole sighed from where she sat waiting in the living room as her daughter walked into the house.
Carrie's shoulders dropped.
"You're home late."
"We had a late practice."
"There aren't lights on the field," she pointed out. "It's been dark for two hours."
"How do you know there are no lights if you've never been to a game?" Carrie countered.
"I asked your father."
"I was doing homework," Carrie sat down in the recliner as her mother motioned for her to join her on the sofa.
"Where?"
"A friend's."
"Which friend, Carrie?"
"You know which friend, Mother," Carrie mocked her tone.
"Carrie, we discussed this...you are no longer allowed to hang out with that girl."
"That girl, Mom, is my only real friend here."
"You broke the rules," Carole reminded. "You've pushed and pushed, and now I've had enough. I'm putting my foot down about this."
"No," Carrie replied, standing. "You can't tell me who to be friends with, especially when you're totally wrong about the friend's character."
"Stephen!" Carole called.
"Good, get Dad in here. I'm sure he agrees with me."
Stephen took a deep breath as he wheeled cautiously into the room.
"Stephen, talk to your daughter," Carole instructed.
"Dad, tell her how crazy she's being," Carrie urged. "You know Kelly. She's not a bad kid."
"I know," Stephen nodded. "She's a real sweetheart."
Carrie smiled.
"But you did break the rules, Care Bear. You were out all night on a school night, and didn't even call to let us know."
Her smile faltered.
"We were worried," Stephen shook his head. "We're not saying you can't hang around her at school--"
"What--" Carole started to protest, but Stephen continued, his voice raising over his wife's.
"We're just saying that you can't hang out with her out of school from now on."
"From now on?" Carrie's voice rose several pitches. "Dad, that's not fair."
"Your mother thinks it's perfectly fair."
"And you?" she narrowed her eyes.
"See..." Carole pointed out. "See? This is the attitude I'm talking about. She wasn't like this before that girl."
"You know this isn't fair, Dad."
"I have to support your mother, Care Bear."
"You don't have to do anything, Dad...except maybe balls up."
"Carrie," Stephen scolded.
"It's true," she exclaimed. "Why do you let her control you like this? You used to be the man of this house, Dad. What happened? Cause you're in some stupid wheelchair, you can't think for yourself anymore?"
"Carrie, please," Stephen urged more gently.
"No," Carrie wiped her eyes as she felt tears forming. "This isn't fair. Mom's just being a bitch because for some reason that I can't possibly understand she doesn't like Kelly."
"Carrie, you will not talk about your mother like that, I don't care how upset with her you are."
"Upset with her? I'm not upset with her. I'd expect this from her. She's always hated Kelly from the start. She's been rude and hateful every chance she's gotten. But you, Dad? I thought you were better than this. I was right, Dad. She is a bitch, but you? You're a disappointment," she shook her head, turning away.
"Carrie!" Carole called after her harshly. "Get back here!"
She ignored her as she walked up the stairs.
"Carrie Marie Underwood, your mother is talking to you," her father fussed.
"Whatever," Carrie threw over her shoulder.
"Carrie, don't make me--"
"Make you what, Dad?" Carrie turned to look at him, halfway up the stairs. "Come after me? I'd like to see you try."
Stephen's mouth opened in shock, the hurt clearly visible in his eyes, but Carrie ignored it as she hurried up to her room, locking the door behind her. She dug around for her keys in her booksack that she still had in her hand, finding them as she sniffed back more tears. She took a deep breath as she walked to the window, vowing not to look down until she made it to solid ground.

"Kelly," there was a knock on her door.
Kelly looked up with a smile as her mother popped her head in.
"Doing homework?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Do you have a lot left?"
"No, I'm finishing up right now. Why?"
"Carrie's here. She seems upset about something. You should come talk to her."
"Yea, of course," Kelly nodded, closing up her books and quickly jumping off her bed. She followed her mother out to the living room where Carrie was seated on the sofa, her booksack in hand, her eyes bloodshot from crying. "Care?"
Jeanne walked to the back of the apartment to her room, leaving the two girls to talk.
"Care, what's wrong?" Kelly asked worriedly as she sat next to her. "Are you ok? You're not hurt are you?" she questioned, taking the taller girl's hands in her own, lifting them off her lap as she quickly examined her.
"I'm fine," Carrie shook her head, sniffing. "I got in a fight with my parents."
"Both of them?" Kelly looked at her, shocked.
She nodded.
"What happened?" Kelly ran her thumbs over her hands soothingly.
"My mom got mad because I was over here when she told me not to be, and I got into it with her. She forbid me from seeing you outside of school. Then my dad came out, and he totally went along with her."
"Your dad?"
"Yea, he said he needed to support her with this decision whether he agreed or not."
"Wow. Didn't see that coming."
"Me either," Carrie sniffed again. "I mean, I get it...I shouldn't have stayed out on a school night, but it's not like I meant to. I even told you I couldn't stay. I just fell asleep."
"I know."
"She's just been waiting for this--for me to screw up--just so she could make this stupid rule."
"I still can't believe that your dad went along with it. That doesn't sound like him at all."
Carrie shrugged, "She got to him. She was probably nagging him all afternoon while I was over here."
"Care, I'm sorry. I never meant to make things hard between you and your mom."
"It was getting tense way before I moved here; it's not you."
"I'm still sorry, though."
Carrie gave her a soft smile, squeezing her hands.
"So you ran away?"
"Sounds childish when you say it like that," Carrie frowned.
"No, no, it's not. I get it...the feeling that you just can't take it anymore and you have to be somewhere else...I understand."
"I don't know what to do," she admitted softly, sniffing.
"Why don't you just stay here?"
"I can't just not go home."
"No, but a day or two would be good to clear all of y'alls heads."
"You don't have a problem with me staying?" Carrie turned to her.
"Of course not," Kelly offered a gentle smile. "I'm gonna go talk to my mom, why don't you go take a hot shower and relax, ok?"
Carrie nodded, leaning forward and kissing her forehead, "Thank you."
"If ever you need, I'm here," Kelly assured, giving her hands a gentle squeeze before standing and walking to the back of the apartment.

"So your mom's ok with me staying here?" Carrie asked as Kelly walked into her bedroom, freshly showered.
"Yea, my mom likes you," Kelly nodded, turning off the light as she closed the door before walking across the room and climbing over the Oklahoma native to lay in between her and the wall. She scooted under the covers as Carrie held them up for her.
"Kell..."
"Hm?"
"Do you mind me sleeping with you?"
"No," she laughed softly. "Why would I? You've slept with me plenty of times already."
"I just...I know you 'd rather not sleep in pajamas..."
Kelly smiled, "You're right--I don't. But I'd rather sleep in pajamas than make you sleep on the couch."
"You know--" she began nervously.
"Care," Kelly interrupted. "No worries. Seriously, I'm fine."
"Ok."
"Ok," Kelly nodded as Carrie opened an arm to her, allowing her to scoot right against her. "Just try and get some sleep. We can deal with your parents tomorrow."
Carrie wrapped her arm around her, kissing the top of her head, "Thanks."
Kelly didn't reply as she was already sound asleep in the taller girl's arms.
