Chapter 38 - Confusion
Vin sat, eyes closed wishing this plane ride would end. It was hard enough sitting here knowing what kind of shape Craig was in, but watching Raven sleep so peacefully in another man’s arms was almost more than he could take. His thoughts went back to earlier in the day when they’d made love. “She was there with me” he thought, all of her.” “Her mind was not somewhere else, on someone else.” Again he thought, “This doesn’t make sense.”
“I know this woman like the back of my hand, she’d rather cut her own throat than tell a lie, something’s not right.”
Staring at Eric he began to retrace the events of the day. “We were upstairs, we made love, then we fell asleep.” “When I woke up she was still downstairs, I heard her.” “The phone didn’t ring or anything, that would have awakened me up before… she was in the kitchen, I heard the dishes, I got up to take my shower and when I came down she was gone.” “But I didn’t hear the phone.” “Okay, so that means she left on her own, he didn’t call her.” “I got in the shower a little after 3:30 and I came downstairs at 4:00 and she was already gone.” “So she left the house sometime between 3:30 and 4:00…her coffee was cold already so.. sometime between 3:30 and 3:45 and she didn’t come back until 10 after 5:00.” “An hour and 25 minutes.”
“The cemetery is on the outskirts of town…that’s at least a twenty-minute drive…twenty minutes there and back…that leaves 45 minutes unaccounted for.”
He pondered the math for a few more minutes. “Okay, I know she was at the cemetery because of the mud…but there’s nothing wrong with that, so why wouldn’t she just tell me…unless, unless she was there with him?” “And I know he was there because he has that same mud all over his truck.” “And how did she get mud all over her pants?” “You might get mud on your cuffs if you were walking around, but not all over the seat…unless you were on the ground.” “No…No there’s no way she got it on with this guy on the ground in the cemetery, No Way!”
Looking again at Eric he wondered, “and what was that conversation about back at the house?” “He never did say what was on his mind….and the way he said ‘got it all figured out’….he knows something.” “45 minutes,” he thought. “That’s a long time for the two of them to spend alone in a cemetery” “…but is it enough time for them to…?” he shook the image out of his mind. He sat now studying Eric who was by this time sleeping. “He knows something.” “He definitely knows something…”
Chapter 39
Chris Scott shifted in his seat. He’d pulled the chair right up to the bed and was sitting there holding his brother’s hand. His eyes, red and swollen were beginning to bother him, and he had a monster headache. He hadn’t slept or even rested for that matter since they brought Craig in here six hours ago. Chris couldn’t believe what was happening; one minute they were laughing and joking, crossing the street outside the student union building and the next moment he was sprawled on the pavement and Craig…Craig was in the air.
The car had come from nowhere, speeding out of the parking lot and down the street. Craig saw it first and pushed Chris out of the way, but he hadn’t been fast enough to get out of its path himself.
“It should be me laying here, not you.” Chris said tearfully, “It should be me.”
He sat there mentally going over the list of injuries; his brother’s face was bruised and scraped from where his head hit the curb, he had a fractured skull and his left arm was broken, as was his pelvis, he had a compound fracture of the left leg, a concussion, damage to the left kidney and a ruptured spleen.
“Why didn’t you just yell for me to get out of the way?” he asked softly “Why didn’t you just yell?”
He checked his watch again, his mind racing, “Where is Raven?” “God what’s taking them so long?” “Just hang in there Snoop, she’s coming, and Vin will be here, did you hear me Snoop?” “Popi’s coming and everything will be all right, you’ll see,…” he said aloud as the tears began again, ”Everything will be all right….”
The sedative was wearing off, and Raven began to stir. As she awakened in the dimly lit compartment she was disoriented and confused. “Vin?,” she called tentatively as she sat up and looked around. Diesel’s eyes were immediately open,
“Here” he said softly, I’m over here.”
“Where are we?” she questioned still groggy. He undid his seatbelt and moved to her side of the plane just as Eric awakened. Looking back and forth between Eric and Vin and then around the cabin she queried, “What in the world? “What are we doing on a plane?”
“Jic..” Eric started, but Vin cut him off,
“Craig baby…remember?” “We’re going to see about Craig” As the fog of the sedative cleared Raven began to recall the events of the last few hours.
“Have we heard anything else from Chris?” she questioned?
“No baby,” Vin replied, “Not since we left the ground.”
“How long have I been out?”
“Not long, only a couple of hours Jicarilla.”
“Does this plane have a phone?” “How long before we get there?” she said the panic beginning to return to her eyes.
“Yes baby,” Vin said gently stroking the side of her face, “There’s a phone, I’ll see if I can get Chris on the line and I’ll check with the pilot about our arrival time, Okay?’
Vin’s take-charge demeanor, his voice, calmed her as always. She could depend on him to make sure everything was going as it was supposed to. Eric was holding her hand and secretly taking her pulse,
“It’s going to be okay Jicarilla, just sit back and rest, we’ll be there soon and you’ll be with your brothers and everything will be like always.”
“How Bad?” she questioned, “How bad is he?”
Eric didn’t want to alarm her any further and tried to sidestep the question, giving her as little information as he could get away with. He told her about Craig’s leg and his arm and that he had a concussion but held back telling her about the more serious injuries. She searched his eyes looking for more of an answer,
“You’ve always been a lousy liar Xa-he’-Ta-no’, tell me,” she demanded. Fearing that the complete truth would send her into another panic attack he again tried to minimize the extent of Craig’s injuries.
“There are other injuries, but I’m sure the doctor’s have handled them by now and Craig will be just fine.”
Just then Vin returned to the cabin and Raven set upon him for answers.
“Vin, tell me, how bad is Craig?” Vin slipped a quick look at Eric who was surreptitiously cautioning him not to say too much.
“Eric won’t tell me what’s going on,” she blurted out,
”Jicarilla, I’ve told you that the doctor’s have no doubt handled everything by now,” he said trying to calm her and update Vin on the sly.
“Nice try Eric” she said, then turning to Vin, “Vin…how Bad?”
Diesel looked back and forth between Raven and Eric trying to decide what he should do. Decision made, he sat, and taking both of Raven’s hands in his he calmly and quietly told her the truth. She slumped back in her seat, disbelief, and shock coloring her face. She sat there tears falling silently on her cheeks, eyes closed shaking her head from side to side, “My God, oh My God…”
