Everlasting Love(Pt38)
Joe was dragged from a light slumber, from a distinct feeling that he was being watched. His eyes opened to look at the ceiling. Sav moaned and moved in his sleep. Joe turned his head and looked at him, Sav continued to wiggle, a soft cry rang out in the room, he flopped over on his back, in the same motion, his arm swung around to slam into Joe’s stomach.
“ooph…” Joe grunted, flinching from the hard impact. ‘He’s having a bad dream.’ he thought. 'Strange, he hasn’t had one…' his thoughts trailed off as the sensation of being watched returned. With his senses on high, he scanned the room. A slight smile jutted up the corners of his mouth.
“You always did like hiding in the shadows.” Joe said and sat up on the edge of the bed.
“The element of surprise is best when stalking prey.”
“Ah, yes it is, but I’m not your prey tonight.” Joe felt the mattress give under Nick’s weight.
“How is he?”
Joe turned around to face him, noticing that he was gently caressing Sav’s face and brushed the damp curls from his eyes from where they had fallen.
“He’s asleep.” Joe answered.
“I can see that Joseph.”
Joe chuckled and stood up. “I’ll get us a drink. We can sit out on the balcony and talk.” He stopped at the door. “How long are you staying Nick?”
”As long as you want me too.”
“Ok.”
Nick glanced up as he left, troubling thoughts passed through their bond, causing Nick to worry a bit about Joe’s mental stability. They were in for a long night of talking, Nick realized. He looked back down at Sav, his heart slamming into his chest again. Joe had told him once in a phone call some weeks ago, shortly after Sav showed up of how much better he looked. The weight he had put on and his all around mentality. But all of that didn’t prepare Nick for actually seeing him, touching him, the one man that still held a tight grip on his heart.
Nick leaned over and placed a soft kiss on his lips, not bothering to stop the tear that tracked down his cheek.
“Welcome home Rick.” He whispered.
Sav sighted and turned away a bit. That’s when Nick noticed the bruising on his neck and the two puncture wounds. “Who did this?” he asked not looking up when Joe came back in.
“I did.”
Nick snapped his head up. “That’s what I felt from you isn’t it?”
”Yeah, I guess, happened hours ago. Although is wasn’t bruised then.”
“So he’s not….”
“Let’s go out onto the balcony. I’ll tell you everything that you can’t get from my mind.” Joe said leading the way, carrying a bottle of blood wine and two glasses.
Nick leaned against the railing, ankles crossed and waited for Joe to say something. “You know, I can remember a time when you couldn’t shut up, always had to be the one talking.”
“Those days are long gone Nick.”
“That may be, but the man that lived in those days is not.”
“Sav is not as sick as they lead us to believe.”
“And you know this because?”
”Don’t be so dense Nick. I’m still here, aren’t I. You saw the holes in his neck, felt everything I did. The poison is still there, but it’s minimal, not enough to make me the least bit queasy to my stomach. I don’t know how much is actually there, because the medicine that was given to him also contained the AIDS virus. Some other kind of medic…..”
“Wait…back up. The medicine had the AIDS virus in it?”
”Yes. That’s what Jack told me. It started out a heavy dose, then over time it was reduced to very little. A drug called Chromelance was also in that mix, to keep him weak.”
“Why keep him weak, his growing strength would have helped him to get well?”
“I didn’t ask.”
”Why not?”
”I kicked Jack out before he could explain why. I don’t care why they did it, just that Sav is safe and away from them, he’ll get better now.”
“Are you sure of this Joe? You were angry when you made that quick decision to send Jack away.”
”Are you saying my decision was wrong?”
”No, I’m not saying that. Did you stop to think about how Sav was going to react…long term.”
“What do you mean?”
“He’s been with them for nearly five years, that’s all he knows right now. Sav is depended on them.”
”He can be depended on me from now on. I can take better care of him than they ever could.”
“Can you?”
“What the hell kind of question is that, of course I can?” Joe shot back. “Sounds to me like you want him back there, out of our reach.”
Nick glanced down at his glass. “No, I don’t want that. What about his medicine?”
“He doesn’t need it.”
“One taste of his blood isn’t going to tell you that. Sav will still need that.”
“He’s not sick anymore!” Joe shouted.
Nick pushed away from the railing, sitting his glass down on the table he approached Joe. Squatting down in front of him, Nick looked up to Joe’s downcast eyes. “Sav is sick Joseph, he still has a long way to go, he still needs the medication. You can’t take it away just like that, he needs to be taken off of it gradually.”
Joe broke eye contact, staring out in the darkness. “So you think I did the wrong thing…about Jack?”
“You have always said and did things before you thought about it.”
Joe snorted. “Yeah, if I did, Sav, the one I love most in the world, would give my life for, wouldn’t be in the conditions he’s in now.” Joe looked back at him. “What would you have done with Jack?”
Nick smiled a bit. “I would have killed him.”
“That’s basically what I told him, he caught on to the meaning fast.”
“Joe, just because I gave Sav his freedom, doesn’t mean I wouldn’t kill anyone that threatens or harms him.”
”That’s funny, I’ve done those things and you haven’t killed me yet.”
“You’ve never threatened him. Hurt him emotional…yes.” Nick stood up and held out his hand to Joe. “… besides I like you. Come, we have many plans to make.”
”Oh, what kind of plans?”
”Revenge dear Joseph, sweet revenge.”
“I don’t know about that, it’s not my style.” Joe said as he stood up.”
”You would let those go unpunished for what they did?”
”Yes, see that’s the difference between us, I can let it go. Sav is home, where he belongs and will get better.”
“Yes, that he is, but I can’t let them get away with it so easily.”
“Just let it go Nick, we have other things to worry about. One of which is lying right in there.”
“Hum…perhaps you are right.” Nick said thoughtfully.
Joe smacked his arm. “I’m right.” Then went inside.
Nick chuckled and followed him.

Just after sunrise, Joe turned the lights off downstairs, said goodnight to Mal and Nick, then made his way to Sav’s bedroom. Going inside he closed the door. Sav was pulling himself up to a sitting position.
“Hey.” Joe greeted him with a smile.
“Hi.” Sav responded half heartedly.
Joe frowned. “Something wrong?”
Sav pulled the blanket high on his bare chest. “I just woke up.”
“You don’t have to cover up.” Joe sat on the edge of the bed.
“I’m cold.”
“Bet I could warm you up.” Joe smiled devilishly.
“I bet you could.” Sav replied hiking the blanket higher.
Joe tugged gently on the blanket, trailing his fingers lightly over Sav’s bare chest, then back up to his neck, then down again. Leaning forward his lips followed his fingers, nipping along his neck and jaw. Joe captured his mouth, his tongue slipping past Sav’s lips to tangle with his. Joe’s hands stayed busy, diving beneath the blanket to ease his hand over Sav’s hip, around to grasp his buttock.
Sav broke away, pushing against Joe’s chest. “We can’t.”
Stilling all movements, Joe rested his forehead on his shoulder. The aggravation was slowly setting in of not be able to be intimate with him.
“Ok.” He sighted heavily and sat up looking at the door.
Sav pulled the blanket back up. “I’m sorry, I know you wan…”
”No it’s alright. I’ll just have to wait little longer.”
Silence passed between them for a few minutes, until Sav broke it.
“Well since you kicked Jack out, what am I suppose to eat?”
“We’ll just have to try mine.” Joe said and stood up quickly, going to the bathroom to rinse out the glass that he had earlier. Sitting back on the bed he bit into his wrist and let his blood drip into the glass, filling it halfway before the flow stopped. Licking the blood from his arm, he turned to Sav.
Taking the glass, Sav’s fangs immediately dropped, wanting nothing more than to drain the glass in one gulp. The smell of Joe’s blood intoxicating to his senses, his hands trembled as he brought the glass to his lips.
“Just a little at a time.” Joe whispered.
Closing his eyes, Sav titled the glass more, he hesitated briefly, then dropped his hand. “I…I can’t…”
“Why not, it’s my blood Sav. Remember how it calmed you before.”
“This is different Joe. I don’t know if it will stay down or the effects it will have, it maybe to much to handle.”
“Ok…” Joe said and took the glass. “…hum…ok, I’ll be right back.” He ran from the room and down the stairs to the kitchen. Snatching one of the bottles of uncut blood and another glass, he ran back upstairs. “Try this one, it’s uncut and has sat in the pantry for awhile, hardly anything left from the person that donated it.” Joe poured a small amount and handed it to him.
Sav glanced down at the dark liquid with uncertainty. Joe saw this and placed his hand lightly over Sav’s and brought the glass to his lips, titling it up and watched his throat bob from swallowing.
“How long will it be before you know it won’t stay down?”
“Couple minutes, I guess.” Sav replied and leaned his head back on the pillows.
Joe jumped up again and rushed to the bathroom, coming back with the waste can. “Just in case.”
The minutes ticked by as they waited. “Is Nick here?” Sav asked out of the blue.
“Yeah, he got here early this morning.”
“I heard his voice, thought I was dreaming.”
“Nope, you weren’t dreaming. We sat outside and talked for a while. He’ll probably come and see you later. Nick is going to stay awhile, is that alright with you?”
“Fine.” Sav looked at Joe. “I’ll take some more, seems to be staying down, my stomach isn’t spinning everywhere.” Taking a few more sips, he rested the glass in his lap. “Why did they do it?”
“Keep you there when you weren’t that sick, you mean. I don’t know and didn’t ask Jack either. I wanted him out of here fast.”
“I couldn’t even tell the difference. I knew I felt better, but not enough to come home.”
”How long ago was that?”
“Year maybe, Gabriel always told me it was too soon or I wasn’t well enough for the long trip.” Sav told him and sat the glass on the bedside table.
Joe took his hand. “You’re here now and that’s all that matters, we can put this all behind us and get on with living forever.”
“Yeah, sounds good to me.” Sav scooting down on the bed as Joe stood up to grab a pair of pajama bottoms from Sav’s drawer. He shed his clothes and slipped them on, then climbed in the bed behind him.
“How do you feel now?”
“Sleepy…stomach is churning just a bit, but nothing bad.”
”Good.” Joe kissed his neck, tightening his arm around him. “If you need anything, I’m right here.”
“I know.” Sav replied and laced his fingers with Joe’s. It wasn’t long before both of them were pulled into sleep by the brightening day outside the window.
