When Night Falls(Pt38)
Sav pushed the door open to the master bedroom, quietly going in and over to the dresser to empty his pockets. Kicking his sneakers off to the corner and started on the buttons of his shirt. Turning around he noticed the table by the window. Moving closer, he stared at the arrangement a moment before touching the wilted roses, the petals fell in a pile on the deep blue cloth underneath. Turning his gaze to the burned out candles that had dripped to the tablecloth, leaving a dark stain around the red wax. A single long stemmed yellow rose, its delicate petals wilted and brown around the edges lay on his side of the table. The red ribbon tied around the stem a stark contrast to the blue. Sav twisted the ribbon and found his matching ring to Joe’s. He vaguely remembered Dylan pulling it off and never knew what happened to it after that. He hadn’t worn it in so long that he didn’t realize that it was missing until now. He briefly wondered why Joe didn’t give it to him before now if he had it all this time. ‘If the situation were different he would have.’ Thinking to him self as he dropped his hand to his side.
“Were you expecting someone?” Sav asked noticing the two glasses and unopened bottle of blood wine, then a quick glance at Joe sitting in the chair on the opposite side of the table.
“I was expecting my boyfriend, lover, lifetime companion...” Joe added at the last moment. “…husband.”
“We’re not married Joe.” Sav stepped away from the table, stripping his shirt off. “And never will be.”
“Call it what you want.” Joe looked to his hands that lay in his lap. “I was expecting you home, but that was eight days ago.”
Sav pulled clean clothes from his drawer and went to the bathroom to change. Coming back out Joe hadn’t moved from his chair. “This all seems familiar. You did this before, the flowers, wine, as an apolo…”
”I’ve looked for you all over town. Asked everyone that I knew if they had seen you or where you might be. Where have you been all this time?”
Sav stuffed his wallet back in his pocket. “I was around.”
“With Nick?” Joe asked softly.
Sav went to the large walk in closet, his muffled reply filtered to Joe. “Most of the time I was, other times I was with someone else.” He came out of the closet carrying his black leather jacket.
When Joe saw the suitcase land on the bed, his heart slammed into his chest and fell to the floor. Sticking his thumb in his mouth to chew on the nail, he stared out the window. Stinging tears pricked his eyes. “Are you leaving me again?”
He dropped several shirts in the case and went back for more. “No.” Sav looked at him. “I could never leave you.”
“You are packing. Looks like you are leaving to me.”
“Nick has asked me to go away with him. Something we haven’t done in a long time...together.”
“For how long?”
Sav was taking jeans from the drawer when his movements stilled hearing the strain in Joe’s voice to keep his emotions under control. His gaze wondered to the picture of the two of them covered in mud in happier days of the past. “Indefinitely.”
Joe swiped at the tears that ran down his cheeks and stood up, stalked to the bed, he scooped all the clothes out of the case and went to the dresser. Stuffing them back in the drawer he slammed it closed, then leaned against it. “I don’t want you to go with him, stay home with me.”
Sav stopped half way between the dresser and his suitcase watching Joe take his clothes and put them away. “Why should I? Give me one reason why I should stay.”
“There is only one reason….I love you.”
Sav turned back to the suitcase and dropped the clothes in that he held. “It’s going to take more than that this time.”
Joe rushed over to him, grabbed his arm and spun him around, held his eyes. “I’m sorry for everything I did…sorry for everything I didn’t do…for shutting you out when I needed you most. It’s not your fault and I don’t blame you for Thomas.”
“You can say that now, but what of the times I came to you. Trying to get through to you, make you see that I wasn’t at fault. Only to be slapped in the face and shoved away.”
“You’re right. I did do that…I understand now and I’m sorry.”
Sav studied the green eyes that have captivated him for so long, looking for any truth to what he said. "You’re only saying it now because I’m packing and getting ready to walk out of your life for a very long time.” He brushed past Joe and went to the dresser, pulling out the clothes again.
Joe ran both hands through his hair, a deeper sense of desperation overtaking him, he quickly followed Sav. He snatched the clothes from his hands, throwing them back in the drawer. “No, you are not leaving me again damnit.”
“I’m not leaving you.” Sav rolled his eyes and pushed him out of the way. “Just a vacation...with Nick.”
“Leaving, same thing.” Joe shot back.
“Vacation. You are more then welcome to come.”
“What?...no...I..I don’t...you need to stay here.”
“I need to get away from here for a while.”
Turning Sav to face him he plunged ahead. “I’m a foolish idiot for blaming you when I shouldn’t have to begin with. I should never have given you such a hard time when we brought you home from that horror with Armand. You didn’t deserve my cold, harsh accusing treatment. It was wrong of me to do so. I’m so sorry Rick, please believe me.”
Sav dropped his eyes from Joe’s to the gold necklace that he wore. He reached up and fingered the tiny chain that he had given him on his 100th birthday.
“I hear what your saying...all the right things…trying to convince me...” Sav looked back to his eyes. “But deep in your eyes...they say differently.”
“Don’t go with Nick, stay here with me where you belong.” Joe pleaded moving closer, hooking his finger under Sav’s chin to bring his head up more. “You are my life Rick…” Closer still until his lips barely touched his. “…my destiny.” A soft whisper upon his lips. Joe teased him with soft touches, before claiming his mouth. Wrapping his arm around Sav’s waist, Joe pulled him against his body, deepening the kiss. Fingers tangled in soft curls as he twisted his head the other way, sliding his tongue back in to glide over Sav’s.
A soft moan jumped in Sav’s throat as Joe rubbed his hand over his back, but his kiss remained gentle, numbing to his senses, causing him the grip Joe’s shirt tight in his fist, lean more into his body.
What seemed like forever, Joe pulled away, sucking his bottom lip between his, then released him. Resting his forehead on Sav’s, he left his eyes closed, pushing the urgent need to take him to bed and show him just how much he loved him.
“Please don’t go Rick.” Joe choked out his words.
Sav too had his eyes closed, still reeling from his kiss, forcing air into his lungs. “I.I..um..I…”
“Richard..” Nick called from the doorway. “…are you ready to go?”
