"And if I count all my blessings,
I get a smile on my face,
Still it's hard to find faith.
But if you can look in my eyes
And tell me we'll be alright,
If you promise never to leave,
You just might make me believe."

There was a polite applause around the room, and Carrie's jaw dropped as she realized exactly who the man was that had just walked up to the microphone to sing.
Jason turned to Kelly, "Did you know he was gonna be here?"
Kelly shook her head, clutching Carrie's hand tightly beneath the table.
"Cool," he smiled, turning back to watch.
"Cool?" Carrie questioned more to herself than anyone else. Kelly was trembling so badly that she was making Carrie's arm shake, and he thought it was cool? "I have to pee," she announced, pushing her chair back. "Kell...come with me?"
She nodded, allowing Carrie to guide her by the hand to the bathroom.
"Cool?" Carrie asked again after making sure the bathroom was empty before locking the door.
"He likes Graham," Kelly shrugged.
"Your brother is an impeccable judge of character."
"They just really got along when we were dating. Everybody still sees him as the good guy out of my exes."
"What about these past few months? Cause usually adulterers aren't seen as good guys."
"They don't know," she replied softly. "You're the only one that does."
Both of Carrie's eyebrows raised in surprise, "Really?"
Kelly nodded, feeling tears forming in her eyes at the thought of having to listen to him the entire night.
"Kell..." Carrie frowned, pulling her into a hug.
"What you're thinking about?" she asked, pulling back enough to look at the Texan.
Kelly sniffed, avoiding eye contact as she felt herself getting angry.
"Kelly?"
"I didn't know," she shook her head as more tears fell. "I didn't know he was coming."
"I know," Carrie assured her, rubbing her arms comfortingly. "This is by no means your fault."
"But he did," Kelly nodded, her eyes showing just how broken she was as she met Carrie's gaze. "He knew I'd be here."
Carrie bit down hard on her bottom lip, not sure what to say that would make her feel better.
"What does he want from me?" her voice cracked.
Carrie closed her eyes as she pulled Kelly into another hug, this time keeping her there, "Do you want to go home?"
"We can't," Kelly mumbled against her shoulder.
"We can do whatever the heck you want," Carrie replied.
"I don't wanna run."
"Kell..." Carrie began tentatively. "You don't...you don't want to be with him, do you?"
She felt Kelly shake her head, and she let out a sigh of relief.

"I don't know if I can do this," Kelly admitted from where she was seated on the bathroom counter.
"Look up," Carrie instructed as she stood in between Kelly's legs, reapplying her eyeliner to hide the fact that she had been crying. "And of course you can."
"I really don't think so," Kelly replied as Carrie put the eyeliner back in her purse and took out her lip gloss.
"Well, I really do think so," Carrie smiled, leaning in as Kelly parted her lips so she could apply the gloss.
Kelly watched her carefully, finding that despite the sudden increase in nerves, she loved the two of them being that close. "Why?" she asked, causing Carrie's hand to pause, barely resting against her cheek.
"Why what?" Carrie questioned, cocking her head slightly to the side.
"Why do you think so? Why do you have this inconceivable notion that I'm this amazingly strong person?"
"Because you are," she said simply.
Kelly shook her head, but Carrie placed her thumb right underneath her bottom lip, halting the motion. Kelly looked at her wide-eyed.
"You are," Carrie repeated. "He'll never even come close to being half the artist or half the person you are, ok?"
Kelly nodded, and Carrie smiled, pulling her chin down and leaning up on her toes to kiss her forehead.
"Thanks," Kelly smiled shyly.
"It's what I'm here for," Carrie smiled back as she put the finishing touches on her lips. "There you go. Perfect."
