AN: Do you guys know the ‘blue light’ I’m talking about? When it’s just getting near dusk and everything seems so still and calm, and shadows seem like they could swallow you whole and hold you? I love sleeping during that time of day.
They didn’t leave the bed for the rest of the day. Cassandra’s make up tracked down her face. When she had finally fallen into an exhausted sleep, Criss slipped out of the bed. He wet a washcloth and gently cleaned her face.
Cassandra didn’t stir. With a sigh, Criss lay back down next to her. He knew when she woke up; things weren’t going to be particularly pleasant. He snuggled close to her and tried to enjoy these last few hours of peace.
**
When she woke up, he was in the bed awake. The room was stained with a comforting shade of blue. It made her want to curl back up and linger somewhere between sleeping and waking.
“We’ve got to talk, Cass.”
“I know,” she whispered.
“Why did you lie to me?” she gazed at him in the blue and realized that she didn’t now if the sun was rising or setting. She blinked a few times and opened her mouth and then closed it.
It was so tempting to tell another lie. It was so tempting to cover this all up and go back to living the life they had so carefully built. But building a life isn’t building a life that will last. She bit down on her lip and sucked in her breath.
“I didn’t lie to you, Criss, not really. Not when you think about it. I never said I didn’t have a family. I just said that they didn’t care about me, and they don’t. Anyone with eyes can see it.”
“You know exactly what you did, Cassandra. And you didn’t tell the truth.” There was silence in the room. There was nothing she could say. He was right, she had lied to him. Again and again.
“I thought you trusted me.”
The hurt in Criss’s voice was enough to make her wince. She reached out her hand as though to touch him. Halfway towards him, the hand fell limp and useless to her side.
“I did trust you. I just didn’t trust myself.” Tears stung her eyes. It made sense in her head, but she wasn’t sure she could verbalize to her boyfriend just what it was she meant.
“I didn’t trust myself to be able to—to keep you. I was afraid that if you knew, I’d have to run away again.”
“Why would you have to run again?”
“Because I would have been scared that you didn’t love me anymore.” She couldn’t keep back her tears. They spilled down her face unchecked.
“You didn’t trust that I’d love you.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“I don’t know what you want me to say to you, Cassandra.” They looked at one another for a few minutes before she lifted her shoulders in a helpless shrug.
Say you still love me. Say that this has all been a mistake and you forgive me. Say that you’re going to keep me still. Say that this isn’t over. Please say anything at all. Just don’t sit here in the quiet anymore! Her mind screamed. But her lips wouldn’t obey to let the words.
“I think you need to leave.” Criss sat up off the bed. He tossed her a pair of keys. “I’ve arranged a suite for you. In another hotel. We’ll still work together, for now.”
She caught the keys, fumbling a little. They felt too cold and hard in her hands. Cassandra stared at him in shock, biting down on her lower lip. Wordlessly, he turned and made his way to the door.
Once again, Cassandra didn’t reach out for him. She didn’t touch him, didn’t speak to him, didn’t cry out and tell him that she needed him. She let him put the space between them.
“When I come back… Please don’t be here,” he glanced at her over his shoulder. All she could do was nod. Once the door closed, and he was gone, she threw herself face down on the bed.
But the tears would not come. No matter what she did, she could not cry. Interestingly enough, there was no pain inside of her, not aching heart, no misery that she’d wrap herself in.
There was nothing but a quickly spreading numbness. Slowly, feeling like she was moving through maple syrup, Cassandra got off the bed. She had some packing to do.
