Carrie looked up at the sound of someone walking into the small dining room where she sat eating a bowl of fruity pebbles.
"Hi," Jeanne smiled warmly. "Slept good?"
"Yea ma'am," Carrie nodded. "Thank you for letting me stay here."
"No problem," Jeanne replied, fixing herself a cup of coffee. "You can stay here as long as you need, as long as you're willing to follow the house rules."
"Yes ma'am," Carrie nodded again.
"I did call your mother last night."
"You called my mom?" Carrie looked up at her wide-eyed.
"To let her know that you were safe. It's a part of the mother's code."
"What did she say?"
"She wants you to go home, but I told her I won't make you until you're ready. You're eighteen now, right? That's old enough to be making your own decisions."
"Thank you," Carrie smiled gratefully.
++++++++++
"Do you think I should call home?" Carrie asked as she watched Kelly dust around the living room.
"I think you should do whatever makes you happy," Kelly replied.
"Dusting makes you happy?"
"No."
"Then why are you doing it?"
Kelly laughed, "Because Lord knows when someone else in here will have a spare moment to be able to."
"So, I may have found something earlier."
"Like..."
"Well, I was digging at the top of your closet, looking for that book you said was in there that I should read."
"Yea..." Kelly nodded, continuing to dust.
"I found a box or tapes."
"You did?" her voice softened.
"Are you mad?"
"Can't be mad when I'm the one that told you to look up there. I just completely forgot that's where I put it last."
"Are those all the songs you wrote?" Carrie asked curiously.
"Um, not all. Only the descent ones that I thought were good enough to record."
"There were a lot of tapes."
"Yep."
"Can I listen to some?"
Kelly paused as she dusted the top of the television set, "Maybe."
"I'll take that," Carrie smiled as Kelly turned to her.
"I pick which ones, though."
"Of course," Carrie nodded, her excitement growing at the thought of getting to listen to what the short Texan had written.
++++++++
"I think that one's my favorite," Carrie nodded as the final piano chord faded out.
"Addicted?" Kelly asked.
"Yea, I'm kinda partial to it."
Kelly laughed softly.
"What about this one?" Carrie picked up a tape labeled 'Because of You'.
"Um, not that one," she shook her head as Carrie handed her the tape. She put it aside.
"You don't like that one?"
"No, it's just...it's a lot."
"A lot of what?"
"Me."
Carrie nodded, "I think we've listened to enough for now, anyway. Gotta leave some for later, right?"
Kelly offered an appreciative smile, "So what now?"
"I don't know," Carrie shrugged. "What do you want to do?"
"Well, I...I actually have a question," Kelly admitted.
"About what?"
"My hands--where do I put them? I mean, I always feel so awkward like they're just there, but shouldn't they be doing something?"
"Like what?" Carrie held back the giggle that was rising, not wanting to offend her.
"Like I don't know. I just feel dumb if they're not doing something."
"Well, it's perfectly fine for them to not be doing something, depending on where they are," Carrie held her hands out to her.
Kelly took them, allowing her to pull her onto her lap, "But where should they be?"
"Wherever you want them to be."
"Wherever?" Kelly's eyebrows raised.
"Ok, well, maybe not wherever," Carrie smiled. "It's just how you feel. Some people like to wrap their arms around the other person, or rest their hands on the other person's waist. Some like to rest them on the other person's hips, or cradle their face, or run them through their hair. It's up to you."
Kelly frowned slightly.
"Don't be nervous to touch the other person," Carrie said gently.
"The thing is, when I kiss you, I...I just feel like I want to be closer to you."
"Closer how?"
"I don't know, just, like, closer."
Carrie raised an eyebrow.
"What? Is that weird? I'm such a dork; I shouldn't have said anything," she moved to get up.
Carrie pulled her back down with a smile, "It's not weird, and you're not a dork, well maybe a little, but you never have to worry about telling me something, ok?"
"Ok," she nodded smally.
"Ok, now, the reason for the look is that from the way you kiss, that was the last thing I expected to come out of your mouth."
"What's wrong with the way I kiss?"
"Absolutely nothing. I love the way you kiss. It's just very innocent, and normally when someone wants to feel closer to the person they're kissing, they deepen the kiss."
"How do I do that?"
"A number of ways."
"But how?"
"Just do what you feel."
"I already do."
"Do you ever hold back?" Carrie looked at her curiously.
Kelly felt her cheeks burning, "I just...I'm not sure...I don't want to look like an idiot..."
"You won't."
"And I don't want to push my luck."
"With what?"
"With you," she admitted nervously. "I don't know, I mean, I'm not sure how far is too far, and I don't want to make you stop doing this."
Carrie smiled as she brought a hand to the Texan's face, stroking her cheek gently with her thumb, "You are nowhere even close to the vicinity of going too far, ok?"
"But how come the other day you wouldn't kiss me when we were lying down? Would that have been too far?"
"I just didn't think you were ready for that yet, and I didn't want to freak you out," Carrie explained. "Don't worry about pushing your luck, ok?"
"Ok," she nodded.
"Good," Carrie wrapped her arms around her, pulling her closer.
Kelly rested her head against her shoulder, "Care?"
"Yep?"
"It sucks--what's going on with you and your parents--but I'm glad that you get to stay, even if just for a few days. I like having you here."
"Well, I like being here," Carrie smiled, turning her head to kiss her forehead.
"So, now what do you want to do?"
"I want to stay right here for a bit if that's ok with you," she replied, not ready to let go of the sense of comfort that had settled over her as she held the shorter girl in her arms.
"That's perfectly ok with me," Kelly yawned, snuggling into her neck some.

Kelly hopped around the room, struggling to slip her shoe on when the phone rang, causing her to trip. "Damn it," she cursed looking around, thankful that Carrie was in the shower and wasn't there to see her. She pushed herself back up as the phone continued to ring. She walked over, grabbing the cordless phone off of her bed, "Hello?"
"Hi."
Kelly sighed. She could heard the disapproval in her voice, "Hi, Mrs. Underwood."
"Kelly," she replied shortly. "May I talk to my daughter?"
"I don't think she's ready to talk to you," Kelly said honestly.
"I don't think your opinion matters in this."
"I was taught it was rude to hang up on someone, but I have had rather little patience lately."
"Where is Carrie?"
"She can't come to the phone right now. She said she would call you when she was ready. I think it's best if we respect her wishes."
"She is a child. She doesn't know what's best for her."
"Legally, she is old enough to make her own decisions," Kelly countered.
"I want to talk to my daughter."
"Mrs. Underwood, I'll tell her you called--"
"Put Carrie on the phone," Carole demanded.
Kelly smirked, "You know what? Fine. She's in the shower. I'll get her for you."
"Wait, no, just tell her to call me back," she protested.
"No, it's fine, hold on," Kelly kept the phone to her ear as she knocked on the bathroom door. "Care, I'm coming in, ok?"
"Ok!" she heard Carrie call back.
"Kelly, I'll call her back. Don't go in there," Carole fussed.
Kelly opened the bathroom door, closing her eyes as she closed it behind her. She kept the phone to her ear, making sure Carole could hear her. "Care?"
Carrie stuck her head out the shower curtain, giggling at the shorter girl trying to blindly make her way through the bathroom as she kept her eyes firmly shut. She reached out, taking her outstretched hand, pulling her closer to the shower, "Baby, who's on the phone?"
"Your mom," Kelly shrugged.
Carrie's eyes widened.
"I told her you'd call when you were ready, and that you were old enough to make your own decisions, but she didn't want to listen. So I told her you were in the shower, and I'd get you for her," she explained when she didn't hear a reply.
Carrie had to bite her bottom lip to keep from laughing. She placed a hand over the bottom of the phone as she leaned over, lightly brushing her lips against Kelly's. She smiled as the Texan's cheeks turned a light pink. She removed her hand from the phone, "You wanna grab me that towel?"
Kelly's head moved from one side of the bathroom to the other, her eyes still closed as she tried to get her bearings and figure out what was where. Carrie turned her in the direction of the towels, and Kelly smiled. She reached out before her hand found one, and she turned back, holding it out for her. Carrie took it, wrapping it around herself. She gave Kelly's arm a gentle squeeze.
Kelly opened her eyes, her cheeks a light pink again as she looked at Carrie standing there in only a towel. "Here you go," she handed her the phone.
"Thanks," Carrie laughed softly, taking the phone. "I'm gonna take this in here, why don't you go wait for me in your bedroom?"
Kelly nodded, pointing at the clock. She had to leave in fifteen minutes for work.
Carrie smiled reassuringly.
Kelly winked before walking out of the bathroom to give her some privacy.
++++++++
Carrie couldn't help but smile when she saw Kelly sitting on the bed, cross-legged, looking at her innocently, "You think you're funny, huh?"
"I told her you'd call. She wouldn't listen."
"You do realize she was mad, right?"
"She was mad before I even said hello. I figured if she was gonna be mean to you, I'd at least get in a little dig beforehand. She deserved it."
Carrie shook her head, laughing softly as she sat in front of her.
"Was she really, really mad?" Kelly looked at her worriedly.
"She was more at a loss for words than anything else," Carrie replied, reaching out and tucking a curl behind the Texan's ear. "Can you imagine what was going on in her mind?" she smiled.
"She totally thought I was with you when you were nekked," Kelly giggled.
"Well, you kinda were," Carrie laughed.
Kelly felt her cheeks burning, "Yea, but it's not like I saw anything...I swear."
Carrie smiled, "I believe you. Not like it would've been a big deal anyway. Nothing you haven't seen before."
"Huh?" Kelly's eyes grew wide.
"Kelly, you're a girl too," Carrie explained slowly. "It's all the same parts."
"Well..." Kelly caught herself as her eyes started to drift to Carrie's chest.
Carrie raised an eyebrow.
Kelly's face was now crimson, "Oh hush."
Carrie giggled, "Sorry. I'm just messing. You just looked so flustered, and being you were the one that said you love being naked, it was funny."
"I like being nekked. Not so much other people."
"You don't like seeing other people naked?" Carrie smirked.
"Huh? No, I mean, yea, I mean...I meant I'm not used to seeing other people nekked."
"Ah..." Carrie nodded, still smirking.
"Oh shut it. Come on," Kelly got off the bed. "I'm gonna be late for work."
Carrie laughed as she followed her out the room.
"I said shut it," she warned with a smile.
"But you're just so cute sometimes," Carrie beamed.
