Chapter 40 Keeping the Peace

Eric stood and walked to the back of the cabin, when Vin had finished giving Raven the update on Craig, he called him to the back of the cabin. He lowered his voice to just above a whisper so that Raven couldn’t hear him, but the anger in him was evident.

“What do you think you’re doing” “She’s right on the edge and you go and tell her something like that?” “What are you trying to do, are you so pissed with her that you’d try to push her over the edge?”

Vin tried to remain calm, “She has a right to know what’s going on.”

“Of course she does,” Eric shot back, “But she didn’t have to know it now…all at once.” “She’s barely over the shock of Craig being hurt and you hit her with this.”

“Look” Vin said his temper growing, “I know her, she can handle this.”

“Really now? Eric said sarcastically, “Yeah, she really looked like she was handling it back at the house didn’t she, sitting on the floor screaming her head off.” “You don’t know her as well as you think you do, and there are things going on here that you have no clue about how to handle, so suppose you just stick to your plan and leave Raven to me.”

Before Vin could respond Raven called to them from the front of the cabin. “Vin? Eric?” Eric turned and with Vin following behind him, moved to Raven’s side.

“What are the two of you up to back there?”

“Nothing for you to worry about Jicarilla” Ric answered,

“You lie to her at every turn.” Vin said under his breath. Eric stood quickly, now nose-to-nose with Vin he whispered into his face,

“It’s called tact partner, maybe you ought to try it every now and then.” “She doesn’t need to be stressed any further.”

“Okay, that’s enough you two, I want you to stop it right now.” “I know you think you’re helping, but I don’t need protecting….from either of you.”

“I know that’s right” Vin said still glaring into Eric’s eyes.

Ric started to respond and Raven cut him off, “Xa he’ Ta No, that’s enough, I mean it!” “Please” she said, exhaustion evident in her voice, “The last thing I need right now is to have the two of you at each other’s throats, the only thing that matters right now….is Craig.”

The tears began to well up again and putting her face in her hands she began to sob. Ric and Vin immediately took their respective places in the seats beside and in front of her; neither of them could bear to see her like this. Raven seldom complained about anything, and crying over a problem just wasn’t her thing. For her to be in this state…she had to be hurting, and they both knew it.

“Come on babe, we’re not at each other’s throats, are we Ric?” “Just…a small difference of opinion, that’s all, right Ric?”

“Right” Eric offered quickly adding a smile, “Just a difference of opinion Jicarilla, that’s all” “No big deal.”

“Please” she said, her lips trembled as the tears rolled down her cheeks, “I can’t take the two of you fighting, I can’t…I just can’t,” she said shaking her head from side to side as she looked at the two men. “Right now, I need the two of you to work together, cause…I don’t’ think I can do this without you.”

She searched their faces for some acknowledgement of what she was going through.

Ric closed his eyes and nodded his head in contrition, looking up now at Vin he said, “Truce?”

“Truce.” Vin replied, “I’m gonna go try again, see if I can get the hospital on the phone.” “Take it easy babe,” he said placing his hand on her knee. Then lifting her chin he said softly, “Look at me…look at me babe…everything will be all right, I…we won’t let you down.” With that he kissed her quickly on the cheek and went to the front of the cabin to make the call.
