Chapter Thirty-Nine ~ My Life is a Soap Opera
~*~*~*~
*Two Days Later*
I sat on the edge of the seat, gazing up at the Los Angeles Skyline. Michael held a piece of paper in his lap as he gazed out of his window. I felt eyes on the back of my head. I turned my head to look at him and a smile was plastered on his face. “What?” “Oh nothing. Have you been to California before?” I shook my head. His grin grew wider on his face. “There’s lots to see.” Michael said, as he turned to look out the window. The SUV pulled over and came to a stop. I dug out the change in my purse. I put a couple of quarters in the parking meter as I followed Michael into a tall building that looked to be at least 60 stories. I followed Michael into a elevator that took us to the top floor. I saw a lady waiting for us at the end of the hall at the apartment Michael called about. Michael greeted the woman, who looked to be in her 50s. She kissed Michael on the cheek, as was custom in California then turned to greet me. “So, you’re the one whose stolen Michael’s heart. I’m glad I’m finally meeting you. Michael’s just been gushing about you.” Michael blushed and tapped the woman on the shoulder. The woman looked at Michael, her eyes widening at him. “Michael, you know its true, ever since you met her, you’ll talk about nothing else but her.” “Karen…” “Oh okay, obviously I managed to embarrass you. I’ll stop. I’m Karen Faye, by the way. I manage these condos and some south of the city, so if you don’t like this one, we can look at those if you wish.” She said, her eyes meeting mine. I nodded, and shook her hand as she offered it. “So Crystal, shall we take a look at this condo?” Karen asked, as she turned around and put a key in the door in front of us. When she opened the door and allowed us to step inside, my breath caught in my throat. The place was gorgeous. The living room had snow white carpet with white walls. There was a gas fireplace made of onyx stone. The dining room was about a foot and a half higher than the living room and the stairs were all that separated the dining room area from the living area. Not to mention that I had a beautiful view of downtown Los Angeles from my floor to ceiling windows. It was the same in massive master bedroom. I would have to get shades to cover them. Michael and I looked around the apartment. It was already furnished, but Karen said I would need my own furniture. I did notice she had a piano so I asked about it. “Karen, do you think you could leave the piano here?” “Of course I can. I’m not entirely sure how it ended up in here anyway, but you can have it, so if you move out, it goes with you, meaning that you’ll have to figure out a way for it to squeeze through the door…” “That’s fine, so how much will rent be a month?” “I usually charge $3500 a month.” My jaw dropped. I was used to Montana where the same sized place may run 600 a month. “But your Michael’s fiance, so I’ll drop it down to $1500. How does that sound?” Karen said her eyes meeting mine. I nodded. “Sounds great, what’s the deposit?” “Deposit? There is none, you will be paying for all the repairs needed if anything breaks.” “So basically, it’s like a home, I just don’t fully own it.” “Yep. You’ll be paying your own water, electricity, etcetera. We do have a parking garage for our tenants down below the building and I’ll give you your own code for the security system we have here so we don’t have anyone getting in and breaking into the apartments. That is if you like the apartment.” Michael looked at me and I knew that I wanted this place. It was perfect. “One other question, what’s the rules about noise and stuff?” “I thought you would ask. These walls are pretty sound proof, so if your up at 4 am pounding on the piano, you’re neighbors will pretty much be sound asleep.” “Nice, so, if I was to pay you now, when would I be able to move in.” “By Thursday, that way it allows me to get things moved out, and you to buy stuff and get moved in.” Karen said, her blue eyes meeting mine. I smiled. It was perfect. I shook Karen’s hand as I told her that I needed to deposit a check into the bank first. Karen nodded comprehendingly. She hugged both Michael and I. “I hope you guys send me a wedding invite. It’s about time that you’ve finally found your happiness, Michael.” Karen said, as she let the both of us go. “Oh of course. She still needs to meet the kids, my family, Elizabeth, Uri…goodness…I still need to meet her side of the family…” I let out a gasp as I realized that it had been over a week since I had talked to my mother. I figured I should call her and let you in on what is going on. I dug my cell phone out of my purse. “Please excuse me. I have a call to make.” I said as I was walking out of the apartment. I knew that this phone call was going to be the most difficult ones I was going to make. I knew if I told my mom, she would let the rest of the family know about Michael in a easier way than I was going to lay it on her. Before I exited the room, Michael grasped my hand, his fingers curling with my own. “Are you calling your mother?” I nodded as I focused on dialing my mother’s number with shaky hands. My nerves were getting the best of me. “Yes, I figure now would be the time to let the cat out of the bag, don’t you think?” I stated, my eyes meeting Michael’s. “You’re right, it’s better than her knowing about it through a tabloid…she’s probably already asked you about it, hasn’t she?” I nodded. Michael muttered something to Karen and she nodded and left us alone in the apartment. The receiver rang in my ear three times going on a fourth before I heard my mother’s unmistakable voice on the other end. “Hello?” “Hi mom, how are you?” “Dear God child! Did you fall off the face of the earth? Why don’t you call me anymore?” “I’m sorry mom, but I have something to tell you, but you need to be sitting down.” “Are you pregnant? Dear Lord, you’ve made me a grandmother out of wedlock…” “No mom, God no. Will you let me finish?” “You’re not pregnant?” “No mom. I’m calling about what we talked about last time…” “What was that? I don’t remember…” “About the tabloid mom…” “Oh that’s right, did you find out who that girl was? I keep seeing her on the globe. She has a striking resemblance to you. Almost a spitting image…” “Mom, the reason why she looks like me is because it is me, mom.” There was silence on the other end. “Hello?” Suddenly I heard the harsh intake of a breath. “So that girl, on the front of Globe today…that’s…that’s…you? My own daughter? How the hell--Fuck!” Her inquisition turned quickly into anger. “You have a lot of fucking explaining to do young lady! Just because you are 20 years old doesn’t mean…” “Hey, hey, hey, HEY!” I yelled, holding the phone away from my ear. “Why the hell didn’t you come out and say it when I brought it up!?!?! You didn’t have to LIE to me! I labored for nine fucking months with you and this is the fucking thanks I get! God Damn it Crystal!” I cringed. Michael was biting on his fist seeing me fight with my mother on the phone. “But MOM!” “Don’t you fucking but mom me!!! Next thing you’ll tell me is that you two are engaged or your having his baby or something…” “Well mom actually…” “OH GOD!!! Tell me right now, are you pregnant with his fucking child?” My anger turned into rage. “NO MOM! God! We’re engaged…but you have to understand, I was in Sweden…” “How long have you two been seeing each other?” “Well what do you mean by ‘seeing’?” “Crystal Marie Goetz!!!! You know fucking good and well what I mean when I say that. Have you two fucked?” “I really don’t think that’s none of your business mom…” “That’s a yes then…so how long?” Her voice has dropped a few decibels but still held that sternness that I hated to hear coming from her. “Since Halloween.” “Halloween! It hasn’t even been a month yet and your engaged to him?!?! Have you lost your damn mind?” “I have not mom, we love each other!” “You said that about Jason…” “Yeah well Jason cheated on me more than once, so I gave him a taste of his own medicine…” “Crystal…” “Mom, Michael’s given me a record contract…” “You slept with him, that’s why. I never thought you do something so foolish as this. I thought I raised you to have a good head on your shoulders.” “Mom, don’t say that. I would’ve gotten it anyway, it had nothing to do with sex. He’s not like that mom…if you want to see him…” “Is he there?” “Huh?” “Is he there? I want to speak with him Crys, if you’re lying so help me…” “Okay, Okay geez.” I held the phone to my chest as my now tear filled eyes met Michael’s pain-stricken ones. “She wants to talk to you.” Michael frowned for a moment, then nodded taking a deep breath as I gave the phone to him. “Hello? Yes this is Michael…” Michael then winced as I heard my mother lay into him. I frowned. “Look ma’am I…okay Yvonne, look, please, understand I love your daughter very very much…No I am not using her…she would’ve gotten the recording contract anyway…we had a bet you see, She had written a song and a good friend of mine sent it to Kylie Minogue…I’m telling the truth.” “Mom! God, let him finish.” I said loudly enough as I leaned in toward the receiver. Michael looked at me and gave a small smile of reassurance. “Well you see the bet was if Kylie accepted the song I would give her a recording contract…is she rich? Well I did give her 20 million…” There was silence. You could hear a pin drop in the middle of the room that’s how silent it was for the next thirty seconds or more. “Sure thing…here. Your mother wants to talk at you again.” Michael said, handing the phone back to me. I took it and held it up to my ear. “Hello?” “Oh my God! Crystal, where are you?” “I’m in California with Michael, we’re looking for an apartment…” “Crystal, do you realize that you’re rich…I can’t even imagine…20 million! Are you sure the money is even there?” “Mom!” “Well wasn’t he bankrupt or something? I heard it on the news…” “No! God! Mom they’re all rumors…fuck.” “Okay, Okay, what are you going to do with the money? 20 million is…a lot.” “I know mom, I’m not about to let it go to my head though.” “Are you going to…well you know…share your wealth…” “Mom, how can you even ask that…of course I’m going to share with my family…jeez, let me just settle in and get everything I could need and want first…” “Just making sure, because I did give birth to you after all…” It made me upset to think that she was entitled to part of my money because of all the times she had said that both my brother and I were mistakes. After all the belittling and time she cursed the day that we were born…now she was entitled to my money because she gave birth to me? I guess the saying ‘All is fair in love and war’ doesn’t count huh? I thought biting my tongue, and trying to play nice once again. “Sure thing mom.” I said, feeling my teeth grind in loathing. “Of course you have to share with your brother…I wouldn’t even worry about your father…that deadbeat never did anything for you…” I shook my head and rolled my eyes at her suggestion. It only fair I guess. I reasoned. “Yeah. No problem. You’ll have to tell Dad for me though, I don’t think I can handle his rejection right now.” I said shifting my weight from one foot to the other. “I’ll tell him for you…if he hasn’t seen any of the magazines…” “Oh he’s a hermit mom, you know that he hardly goes anywhere…” I said, my eyes meeting Michael’s. This comment sparked laughter from my mom. “Yes, you know your father well…well, I suppose I should go, Louis is getting impatient with me, we were on our way to the store. Please visit me soon. I miss you.” My mother began choking up on the other end of the phone. “Bring Michael with you too when you visit. I’d like to meet my future son in law.” My mother said. “Well I suppose…I love you, bye.” “Yep I love you too mom. Bye.” “Bye.” Then there was the sound of the phone hanging up. I pressed the end button on my cell phone and sigh a breath of relief. Michael smiled at me with a genuine grin. I opened my arms for a hug and he was happy to oblige. “Well, that’s a lot of birds killed with one stone…” “What do you mean by that honey?” “Well the only way my family really knows what’s going on with me is through my mother. You see my mom will tell my dad, my brother, my sisters, my uncle Darrell, who then will tell my uncle Duane and aunt Michelle who will let my other uncles and aunts…and the cycle keeps spinning…” We began to make our way to the elevator. “Wow. Word travels quickly in your family…how long do you think it’ll take?” As we waited for the elevator to come to our floor. “A week, maybe a little longer.” I said, as Michael and I walked out of the apartment building. “So does it ever become like telephone?” “Sometimes, but my family are very efficient communicators. They have to be. I have 14 aunts and uncles.” “Wow, that’s massive.” “Yeah I know. All of them are baby boomers too.” “Amazing. So, shall we get you some cash and get you some furniture?” Michael asked as we stepped into the elevator. “Yes.” I said, kissing Michael’s lips in a chaste kiss. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
