Hey I'm sorry it’s taken longer than I hoped it would to get this chapter out. After finals the holiday season decided it wanted to screw me so I didn’t get to write as much as I hoped I would. Please tell me what you think of this chapter! :)
And I prefer this mystery
That cancels out my misery
And gives me hope that there could be
A person that love
The kitchen silence was shattered by the whistling of the green-colored teakettle on the stove. Daniel got up from his seat to take care of the boiling water. Darren sat, hissing quietly, as he placed the ice pack back over his eye carefully. The teacup was placed in front of him but he didn’t drink, nor did he look up when Daniel sat back down across from him. He was ashamed. If Daniel had not come…where had he seen that man before? He knew he had to have seen that face somewhere besides the bar…but where?
“Darren?” Daniel was speaking, but Darren didn’t listen. He was busy thinking about that look Daniel had given him in the alley. It was the same look he had given him in the bathroom…almost as if he were trying to tell him something but could not find the words, as if he was trying to say ‘I can’t live with out you Darren’
‘No.” Darren told himself sternly, ‘Don’t kid yourself’
“Darren? Are you listening to me? You really should drink something. It will make you feel better.”
“Not thirsty.”
“Come on, just try some. It’s good.”
“Daniel I am an adult, not some five-year-old, and I’m perfectly capable of deciding whether or not I want something to drink!” Darren snapped unintentionally.
“S-sorry… I’m just worried about you, that’s all.”
“Why? Darren asked, his sapphire eyes welling up, “Why do you *care* so much anyway?” Daniel was taken aback by the question. Why wouldn’t he care?
“Because…Because I l—you’re my friend. That’s why.” Darren buried his head in his hands to hide his crying. He was being torn up inside, hearing things… why, it almost sounded like Daniel was about to say ‘I love you’ but Darren knew it was just his mind playing its cruel tricks on him again. Daniel sat patiently, giving his friend some space. God, how he hated to see Darren in so much turmoil.
“Am I?” He said at last.”
“Of course you are, God Darren, you’re my best friend! I l—“ He stopped himself again, but when he looked up he saw a brief flash of something he couldn’t quite register in Darren’s eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared.
‘Stop it! Stop it Darren, he was NOT about to say it!’ Darren’s mind screamed. He turned his head away ‘How could he love a weak useless idiot like me? I can’t even fight for myself.’ Darren shivered, Ryan’s face flashing in his mind, sneering at him.
“Darren…” Daniel said slowly, leaning closer across the table. “Darren, I…I…”
Ring Ring ‘Dammit!’ Daniel mentally cursed, he wasn’t sure if he was going to have enough courage to say it again.
Ring Ring the phone seemed to be growing impatient. Daniel stood up, Darren didn’t look up at him as he passed by, the singer was staring into his teacup, memorized by its contents.
“Yeah, hello?” Daniel asked, slightly agitated. Daniel’s eyes widened and he looked over at Darren who was still staring into the steaming amber liquid inside his cup.
“Yes, this is Danienes.nes.” Daniel had to bite his hand to keep from shouting, this didn’t stop him from bouncing however, causing Darren to look up at him strangely.
“Huh? Yeah, yeah.” Daniel was dumbstruck, jaw slacked. “Yeah, okay! We’ll be there!” He paused as the other person on the line spoke.
“Thank *you* Sir, Yes, Thursday at four o’clock, we’ll be there. I can’t wait either! Thank you Sir.” He stood there entranced as he slowly hung up the phone. “Thursday at four o’clock,” he whispered to himself in disbelief. “Darren! Guess what!” He shouted loosing all self control and bouncing like an excited child. Darren slowly looked up.
“Oh COME on, get UP!” Daniel ordered, yanking Darren out of the chair. “We did it! We did it Darren!” Daniel jumped up and down hugging him ecstatically. His enthusiasm was contagious, even to the sorrowful Darren, who began bouncing as well even though he had no idea why Daniel was so excited.
“That was a record company! We did it! They want to sign us! They want to fucking sign us!!” Darren’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief, as Daniel’s had done, and he began dancing around, hopping like a bunny, just like he used to do. Daniel laughed.
“They want to sign us! Oh my God…Oh My God, Oh my God!!” Darren squeaked and, if just for a moment, the weight that he had been carrying around lifted, and he did something he hadn’t done in a long time. He laughed, as lighthearted and carefree as a child, the sparkle of life flickering in his eyes. “We did it.” He smiled. It felt so good. He had finally done something right. Everything seemed perfect…well almost everything, he thought staring at Daniel longingly.
Something was off in his eyes, but he was smiling. Daniel always loved that smile. Ha hadn’t realized how much he had missed it. The way his full lips curled up ever so slightly. Sometimes showing his whit teeth, sometimes not, but always making him look innocent, but secretive, like the great Mona Lisa. Always knowing some divine secret that you wouldn’t dare ask to know no matter how much you might want to. The world could be collapsing around you and if you saw that smile you’d know that, some how, everything would turn out okay.
“Yeah we did.” Daniel replied, smiling his little half-smile almost seductively. He almost stepped forward and embraced Darren more intimately, but he stopped himself. Darren finally stopped bouncing, tired and out of breath. They shared a smug proud smile.
“We did it.” Daniel reiterated one last time, loving the feel of those particular words rolling off the tip of his tongue. Darren sighed. For once the constantly nagging voice inside his head was silenced, finding nothing negative to comment on.
That night Darren fell asleep quickly, exhausted, content with everything…well, almost everything…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Oh Danny!” Darren giggled, being hoisted into the arms of his lover. Daniel kissed him deeply, carrying him into their bedroom, which was adorned with softly glowing, vanilla scented candles. Rose petals—red and white— blanketed the hardwood floor. Things were blissfully…perfect.
Gently Darren was laid back onto the red silk sheets. He smiled up at the lanky guitarist hovering over him, eyes filled with love and passion. Darren stroked his lovers golden locks, caressing his face gently.
“Close your eyes” Daniel’s husky voice commanded. Darren was all to happy to comply, closing his eyes, enjoying the feel of the cool silk against his naked skin. He gasped as Daniel licked up his stomach, leaving a stick trail of saliva in his wake, while gently massaging the singer’s arms. Daniel squeezed Darren’s arms a little harder, quickly positioning himself to enter the pale angel quickly. Darren moaned a little, until he felt a pain jolting up his thin arms. Daniel was squeezing them to tightly, painfully, digging his nails into the soft flesh.
“Danny, you’re hurting me…” he whispered, eyes still closed, “Danny, let go!” he began to panic as the hands gripping him began to shake his slender form violently. His eyes snapped open and he saw the all too familiar hazel eyes from the alley. He would have screamed, but Ryan’s hand had already covered his mouth as the larger man thrust into him painfully. Ryan was laughing insanely, a wild look in his eyes. He thrust deeper, harder; Darren screamed crystalline tears falling from his eyes. He struggled, tried to fight back, tried to scream for help, for anybody...
“Noooo!!” A shrill scream caused Daniel Jones to sit upright in bed, looking around in the dark, heart racing.
“Huh?! What?!”
“Aaaahhhh!!” The sleeping singer screamed again a pained look causing his delicate features.
“Darren? Darren! Wake up!” Daniel leaned over, shaking his friend slightly. “Wake up!”
“Let go!!!!!” Darren bolted upright in bed, a cold sweat covering him, his breathing was erratic, his heartbeat abnormal, as he flailed his arms out in an attempt to hit his attacker.
“Darren!! Darren, wake up! You were having nightmare. It was just a nightmare, Dozer. Wake up.” Now both men were breathing irregularly. Daniel turned to flip the bedside lamp on and then looked over at Darren. The dim light flooded the room; Darren gripped fearfully at the cotton sheets of the rather small bed they had to share. Daniel reached out to try and comfort him but the singer wrenched himself away from the guitarist terrified.
“N-no! D-don’t come any closer!” Darren whimpered shakily, jumping up and backing into the opposite wall, knocking a cheaply made painting they had found at a garage sale a month earlier to the ground.
“Dozer, it was just a dream. Look at me, It was just a dream.” Daniel slowly stood up, trying not to look threatening, for some reason Darren was terrified of him at the moment. Darren’s breathing was slow, rhythmic, but his heart was ready to explode in his chest. His face was wet with sweat and tears.
“P-please! D-don’t come any closer!” Darren restated, not sure yet whether this was dream or reality. Or which was which for that matter.
“Darren snap out of it! You were just dreaming.”
“D-dream? B-but it was so real …Danny?”
Daniel nodded, his green eyes sparkling.
“Darren…What happened? Tell me.” Darren shook his head. It couldn’t have been a dream…it just couldn’t have…
“So real, so real, real, real, real, real.” Darren was turning whiter; he clutched his stomach in pain. Daniel stepped forward.
“Darren?” He asked confused.
“Hurts…” The singer squeaked pathetically, pained by some unknown force. He staggered forward, seizing his sides in agony. He took a couple steps forward. Then, before Daniel even had time to react, Darren toppled over, eyes rolling to the back of his head. Daniel rushed to his friend’s side. What was going on? What if Darren had been hurt worse then he had originally thought? Dammit! Why couldn’t Darren be more ready to fight for himself? He had been that way since high school, always being beaten up, and then he would cry unashamed on Daniel’s shoulder afterward. But high school bullies were far from dangerous compared to the world of psychos that they lived in. Perhaps Daniel would sign Darren up for some self defense classes after they were officially signed. Yes, that would be a good idea.
Daniel sighed to himself, picking up the unconscious form of the singer up and laying him back on the semi-hard bed. He was breathing and his heart was beating normally. That was a good sign. Though what caused Darren to act that way worried the guitarist. But he figured they could talk about it in the morning. After all, he was exhausted and didn’t want to bother with waking up Darren again anyway.
But they would not be talking about it the next morning, or the following one. If only Daniel had known that what happened in the alleyway was affecting Darren deeper then even the angelic beauty himself could imagine.
