Two hours later, I was awakened by the dreams, breathing hard and sweating profusely. This was nothing new to me for this happened every time I slept but this time, it was different. I remembered a little bit about the dream. Quickly, I tore out the notebook from it’s spot in my nightstand along with the pen I was given to write with. Moving quietly as to not wake my sleeping roommates, I slid to the floor, finding a lighted position with my back against the bed of the roommate I had yet to meet. The moon was full and the sky cloudless, providing dim light but yet it was enough.
I remember a little of my dream. Just a little but a little is better than nothing. I smiled to myself as I wrote. Having only been here one night, I was already showing more progress than ever. I would be out of here in no time. There were people fighting, although I don’t know why. There was also a person screaming. It sounded horrible the screeching did. That is all I remember. Still, I at least remember something.
Closing the small notebook, I smiled to myself. If I was outside the institute, I would have treated myself to ice cream I was so happy with myself.
“This is getting pathetic.” I whispered out loud to myself. “I haven’t even been here for nine hours and I’m already beginning to believe that I’m getting better.”
Looking down at the small notebook, I sighed. As much as I wished that I was cured from this, what I would like to call illness, I knew that I still had a long journey to the cure. Stupid curse! All I wanted was sleep! Placing the notebook inside the small drawer, I closed it softly not wanting to wake my sleeping friends. Snuggling deeper into the covers, I laid awake until morning, wondering what my future held.
The clock read eight when the nurse came to wake us up. I was already awake, having been since I woken up last night, so it didn’t matter much to me whether we had to get up or not. However, to Steve it did.
“Stupid bitch, I wish that they would wake us up later! I mean, come on, we can’t shower till eight thirty and breakfast doesn’t start till nine.” He muttered as he rubbed his eyes, trying to vanquish the last remains of sleep from them.
“You whine too much Steve.” Dave said walking up to us with his showering gear and clothing in his arms. He then turned his eyes toward me. “Hey Jay, grab your shower gear. They make us wait in a line for the showers and it’s a first come first serve basis. If your not one of the first people, your stuck with a cold shower. As you can tell, Steve has had many a freezing shower before.”
“Shut up!” Steve mumbled as he sleepily dug through his drawers, tossing items here and there. “I’m sure Aaron will be waiting for you down there for you.”
At the remark, Dave paled. “I hate open showers.”
The showers were very large and… open. They reminded me of the showers in the locker room at school; there were three showers, all with five shower heads. Two male nurses stood at the entrance of the showers and I guessed they were making sure that no fight broke out. I found myself embarrassed as I cleansed my body for I was naked with boys all around me. It wasn’t that I was a shy person or anything, but I noticed that some of them were looking at me, eyeing me up and down unabashedly. At school, it was a mandatory rule ‘don’t look at your fellow man’, here, however, it seemed like some of these boys either didn’t follow the rule or didn’t care.
The shower was warm, not hot or cold. Cleansing myself as fast as I possibly could, I listened to Steve as he unmercifully teased Dave.
“Oh man Dave! I believe we are defiantly going to have to get you some soap on a rope!” He began laughing hysterically at his own joke while Dave just glared at both him and Aaron, who was currently smiling.
The door opened and closed but I ignored it, instead finding myself scrubbing harder at my scalp in quick movements so I could get out of here.
“Oh, damn it.” I heard Steve mumble next to me. “Dereck’s back.”
Looking up, I noticed who he was talking about. The boy was currently undressing, stepping out of a pair of baggy sweats, with his back toward the showers, probably because most of the attention of the boys was on him. I looked away giving him privacy. This boy was to be my other roommate. Excitement and hope bubbled up in me. What was his personality like? Was he nice? Steve and Dave seemed to not like him, would I? And the question that seemed to pop up in my mind the most was, what did he look like?
Daring a small peek over at the new boy, I turned my eyes, making sure that they would hit nothing below anyone’s chest. The boy still had his back to me, I noticed with disappointment. I could not see his face from the angle I was at but I did notice that his hair was blond. It made me feel giddy for some reason knowing this, also very stupid.
“Jay! Hey, Jay, are you even paying attention?” The hand that waved in front of my face made me jump. I noticed that it was Steve watching me with a worried expression. “Are you even pg atg attention to me? Come on now, I’ve been talking to you for the past five minutes and you never answered. Is it ignore Steve day today or something?” He asked as he turned off the stream of warm water.
Dave walked over toward us, his waist wrapped in a towel. “I’m hungry guys. You ready for breakfast?”
“Always!”
“Let’s get out of here and hurry up dressing also. Aaron is making his way over here.”
“Oh, so sweet. Your boyfriend….”
The glare Dave gave Steve could have incinerated him in seconds it was so heated. For the first time since I met him, Steve suddenly stopped his talking. Between the three of us, there was complete and utter silence save for the other boys, some who insisted upon screaming at the top of their lungs. Dave was the one to break the silence as he whirled around and marched over to where his clothes had been placed. Steve followed and I followed after him.
We did hurry changing for Dave’s sake and I noticed that he was in a good mood after we left the shower room for Aaron was still in there when we took off. We had made our way down to the cafeteria, grabbed a tray, and still silent, we begun to eat. I wasn’t sure if oatmeal was supposed to have the same consistency as the stuff in front of me so I ignored it, opting to nibble on the pieces of toast that was also on my tray.
“This shit is not oatmeal.” Steve declared, picking up his spoon and letting the over-chunky brown substance fall back into his bowl with a couple of splats. “Ugh. I can only say that I hope that we are given a good lunch.”
“I’ll give you something good if you eat it.”
“Hell no!”
“Not even for two of my anti-depressants?”
This sparked my interest. They were wagering their medication.
“Maybe. What kind are they?”
“What are you wagering?” I asked out of interest.
“Well, you see, since there is no such thing as currency here in the good old St. Maries, in order to get our goods, we purchase them with our medication.”
I stared at Dave incredulously. “How the hell do you guys do that?”
“What?”
“Get your pills out here. I thought that the nurses watched you take them.”
Laughing Dave replied to my questions. “There are other things that look like the pills. For instance,” He pulled out a small bent off-white object. “This is an uncooked noodle I found on the ground a couple of days ago. Yes, I know that that is gross and all but it is small enough and the precise color of the pills that I take. Believe it or not, there is quite a high market for pills around here, especially certain kinds. It is wise to always keep around small doodads like this incase you need something.” He pocketed the small noodle back in his pocket. “You never know when you will need some help or something. Friends are only your friends in here if they get something in return.”
“But that does not include us!” Steve had cut into the conversation at that point, crumbs flying everywhere from his mouth. “Were good friends, me and Dave, and your our good friend too. That’s something that is not common in a place like that. If you need anything just ask us. We’ll give it to you for free.” He looked over at Dave, smiling. Dave nodded and smiled as well. I found myself smiling back at them. It felt good to have friends.
