Chapter 3
I woke up late the next day, it was actually two in the afternoon, and I found Kevin sitting in a chair across from me. He looked tired and worried. I felt rested and good, but then I remembered what had happened the night before. I knew Kevin had questions he wanted to as als also knew I didn’t know what to tell him. He took a deep breath and then asked,
“ What happened yesterday?” He looked straight at me.
“ What do you mean?” I asked in a lame attempt to try and stall the inevitable.
“ I’ve never seen you fall apart like that.” Kevin said, “First you go at the group of vampires like there’s no tomorrow and then you just break down cry as soon as they leave, what’s going on with you Angel?”
“ I don’t know!” I said, “I just haven’t been sleeping well these last couple of days, I guess I just…I don’t know!”
“ That’s not true Angel!” Kevin said, “ Something is going on, and I wanna know what it is!”
“ You’re right…Something is going on, but it’s really none of your business…It’s just something I have to deal with myself…”
“ No…Angel, it is my business, it’s my job to look after you!” Kevin said, “And if it’s something that’s affecting you the way it is, then I’m not gonna let you deal with it yourself!”
“ Kevin…” I began.
“ No Angel! I don’t wanna hear it! Just tell me what happening to you…” Kevin said, begging me with his eyes.
“ You wouldn’t understand!” I said as I got up and walked out of the apartment, I was still wearing my clothes from the night before.
I spend the rest of the day just walking around in the city thinking about what was going on, and how I would deal with the situation. I had finally figured out what was going on with Nick and me. I had finally realized why I kept trying to get him to attack me. I was in love with him, and I knew that was a bad thing, especially in my position, so I wanted him to do something to make me fall out of love with him. And every time I tried, he did something to make me fall even more in love with him. I came to the conclusion that my life sucked, and I needed to tell Kevin what was going on.
I walked back to his place and tried to sneak in before he saw me. I dreaded telling him the truth. I knew he would be extremely disappointed in me, and that was just not something I was looking forward to. Of course Kevin was waiting for me and some answers.
“ Angel!” He called out as I was trying to walk past him, hoping I had somehow turned invisible.
“ Yeah?” I asked as I turned around to face him.
“ Are you gonna tell me?”
“ Tell you what?” I asked. I knew exactly what he wanted me to tell him.
“ What’s going on?” He said.
I sat down across from him and stared down at my hands. I didn’t know where to begin.
“ Angel?” he said, pushing me to start telling him the truth.
“ I don’t know how to tell you…” I started.
“ Tell me what?”
“ That…That I’m in love with…” I stopped and took a deep breath. Kevin looked at me urging me to go on.
“ In love with who?” he asked.
“ Nick…” I said barely audible. Kevin looked confused,
“ Nick?” he asked, “Nick the vampire?”
“ Yeah…” I said, finally raising my eyes to meet his. He stood up and stared down at me, anger displayed in his eyes,
“ Angel…Are you completely insane?” He shouted.
“ Maybe…” I said. Tears were welling up in my eyes, “I can’t help the way I feel Kevin!”
“ What!?” He started pacing back and forth,ou cou can’t be in love with him! He’s a vampire! He’s a killer!”
“ Don’t you think I know that Kevin!” I shouted, “ But that doesn’t change the way I feel about him!”
“ Jesus!” He said, “Do you even know what you’re saying?”
“ Yes…Kevin…I know what I’m saying.” I looked at him, “And I think he feels the same way…”
“ Fuck!” Kevin shouted slamming his hands down on the dining-room table, “Angel…he doesn’t feel the same way…he’s been messing with your mind!”
“ How come he hasn’t killed me then? It’s not like he hasn’t had a chance!” I shot back.
“ He’s messing with you!” he stated.
“ And he saved me from the werewolf! Why did he do that if he wants me dead?” I continued.
“ Angel…” he sighed, “He’s dangerous…insane, manipulative. He’s just playing around with you! He isn’t capable of loving anything but himself!”
I looked at him menacingly,
“ Fuck you Kevin!” I said as I left the apartment.
I don’t think I had ever been as angry and hurt as I was when I stormed out of Kevin’s apartment. I had expected him to be disappointed, yes, but I didn’t really think he would actually blow up at me the way he had. I had hoped he would help me figure out what I should do, but I guess his hate and contempt for Nick overclouded that. Usually Kevin would have tried to help me in any way possible, but obviously not when it came to Nick and my feelings for him.
After having wandered around town for what seemed like hours, crying and contemplating on what to do, I found myself on a very familiar street. I walked up to the mansion and stood there staring at the door, for a couple of minutes, trying to decide on whether or not it was a good idea to knock. I finally realized that I didn’t care. All I knew was that the one person I really needed or wanted to see at that moment was behind that huge door. I didn’t care if it was smart or not. I just had to see the person I hadn’t seen in over a week. A week filled with doubt and confusion. I needed to see Nick. I needed to talk to him. I wanted to know why he had been hiding from me. I needed to know if he felt the same way I did. The fact that Kevin could be right, that Nick could just be playing with my mind and feelings didn’t even cross my mind.
I read the first page of the chapter, learning that the vampires name was Nickolas. He had been given the dark blood 400 years ago, when he was just 22. After the transformation his maker, Jonathan, had committed suicide by walking into the sun, just moments after he had shown Nickolas to his new bed, a coffin. So he was an orphan. If that's what you call it that. He had had no one to show him how to deal with his newfound immortality. I found myself almost feeling sorry for him, no wonder he was so screwed up.
I got a lot of information about my enemy from that book. The coven had been founded only a hundred years ago, give or take a few decades. And as far as the author of the book knew, Nickolas was the oldest living vampire. Thought of as a mentor and a god, by his followers. I couldn’t help but think that vampires obviously would follow a madman as blindly as humans when they where tricked into joininsectsect. They would certainly follow Nickolas into the blazing fire, if he asked them too. Scary to think that one man, or whatever you could call him, could have so much power over another being. From the reading I did, I knew that I had to be careful with this guy. He was definitely a force to be reckoned with. I had just finished the chapter when Kevin called me from the dining room.
I walked in to find the table set. He had made something as simple as spaghetti, but it smelled delicious. I was so hungry you’d think I hadn’t eaten for days. I sat down at table as Kevin went back into the kitchen. I heard him rummaging around, and after I had waited for almost five minutes I finally yelled,
“ Kevin! The food is getting cold! Are you coming or do I have to eat this alone??”
Just as I had finished my sentence he walked in,
“ What took you so long? I’m starving!” I said smiling.
“ I was looking for my wine opener,” he said. Holding up a bottle of white wine he continued, “ I figured, since it’s your birthday, we’d have some wine with dinner. As far as I can remembeu dou don’t drink red wine?”
“ Yeah!” I said amazed, “ How’d you know that?”
I couldn’t help but laugh,
“ I’m the watcher right? I know this stuff!”
I laughed too; I don’t know why I kept forgetting that.
“ Right, sorry” I said, “ I guess it slipped my mind.”
He poured us both a glass and raising his he made a toast,
“ To you, may your life be long and withouo muo much hurt or sorrow!”
I looked into his eyes, feeling the tears pressing on in my own as I prayed to God that Kevin’s wish for me would come true. Again the reality of my situation got the better of me. I lifted my glass to his and softly said,
“ Hear hear!”
Kevin got that worried look in his face again,
“ You’re going to be alright Angel.” He said as he took my hand, “ you’re just not aware of the strength you have in you.”
I looked at him,
“ How can you be so sure?” I asked, “ Are you some kind of psychic too?”
The last part came out a little harsher that I had intended it to, but Kevin hadn’t noticed. All I kept seeing in his eyes was the worry he held for me. The worry that I wouldn’t realize that my destiny was to do this, that I had the strength to face the monsters of the underworld. Knowing this made me calm down. If Kevin believed I could do it, then I would prove him right.
“ Ok…now, let’s eat!” I said, smiling to him, “ I don’t think my stomach will forgive me, if I don’t start eating right this minute!”
Kevin laughed at this and put some food on my plate. He handed me the plate and as soon as I had it in front of me, I started eating. I couldn’t remember the last time I had been so hungry. I couldn’t even remember the last time spaghetti tasted so good.
“ Has anyone ever told you you’re a great cook?” I asked between mouthfuls.
“ No, but thanks!” Kevin said smiling at the way I shoveled the food into my mouth, “ Slow down, or you will not be able to move when you’re done!”
“ So? It’s my birthday, and I don’t want to move!” I said.
“ Oh right, I forgot!” Kevin laughed.
“ So that Nickolas guy, do you know where he hangs out?” I asked, wanting to know as much about him as possible.
“ Well…”Kevin began, but he was cut off by my cell phone which started ringing.
“ Hold on.” I said to him as I fished the phone out of my bag, “ Hello?”
Kevin kept eating.
“ Oh hey Howie! What’s up?”
It was one of my best friends.
“ Not much actually” he said, “ You know we’re waiting for you down at the club, I thought you where gonna join us.”
I cringed. I had completely forgot, that I was supposed to meet my friends at the club tonight.
“ Oh my God, I completely forgot! I’m so sorry!” I said. I really was sorry.
“ It’s ok!” Howie said. I could tell he was smiling into the phone, “ So are you coming later?”
“ I don’t think I’ll be able to make it tonight” I said. The smile disappeared. “ But maybe we can do something tomorrow?” I crossed my fingers in the hopes that he would agree.
“ Um…sure! Whatever you sayu’reu’re the birthday girl.” I could tell by the tone of his voice that he was disappointed.
“ I’m really sorry!” I said, “ I promise I’ll make it up to you!”
“ It’s ok. I’m sure you have a good reason!” he said, sounding just a little happier that he did a few seconds ago.
“ Believe me! I do!” I said smiling.
“ Ok…so we’ll talk tomorrow?” He asked.
“ Absolutely!”
“ Happy Birthday Angel!”
“ Thanks!” I said, smiling, “ Love ya!”
“ I love you too!” He said. He was smiling again, “ Bye!”
“ Buh bye!”
I hung up and looked at Kevin. Now he had that serious look on his face again.
“ What?” I asked him.
“ Angel…you do realize that you can’t tell any of this to your friends right?”
“ I know…if they ask what I was doing tonight, I’ll make up some lie…Okay?”
“ Yeah, okay” Kevin said, “ Now where were we?”
“ You where about to tell me where that Nickolas guy hang out!” I said.
“ Oh…right…yeah…” Kevin said, now he had a constipated look on his face. I guess he was thinking really hard, “ I don’t know exactly where he hangs out, “ he continued, “But I know that some of his followers hangs out at the club on the corner, across from the multiplex.”
My eyes widened,
“ The wave?” I was shocked. Kevin nodded,
“ Yeah, that’s the one!”
“ But that’s where all of my friends are right now! That’s where I was supposed to meet them!”
“ Don’t worry, I’m sure nothing will happen to your friends.” Kevin looked genuine as he continued; “ The vampires usually hold a low profile in crowded areas like that. They probably wont go after anyone in the club.”
“ God I hope you’re right!” I said “ But you know what? I’ve changed my mind about the physical training. I wanna get started right now!”
I stood up and started walking toward the gym.
“ Aren’t you going to finish your dinner?” Kevin yelled after me.
“ I’m not hungry anymore!” I yelled back, “ Now are you coming, or do I have to figure this out for myself?”
Kevin came running in and said,
“ Has anyone ever told you, that you can be pretty bossy sometimes?”
“ I get that a lot! I really don’t know why!” I said, laughing.
“ Sure you don’t!” Kevin laughed with me.
Nick had called the entire coven in for a meeting. He had some important information for them. As the large group of vampires gathered in front of him in the large room, he looked around to see if anyone was missing. Who knew, some of them might have already encountered theiemy emy number one. The room was filled with hushed voices and as soon as he saw no one was missing he decided to start,
“ Quiet!” He yelled out into the room. Everyone’s attention was focused on him. “ I have just learned today, that a new slayer has been found.” The room filled with gasps. “I don’t know who it is yet, but I will soon enough.” He said. “Please be aware the he or she will know about us too. I don’t want any, and I mean any of you to do anything do draw attention to you or this coven. From now on we have to be even more discrete than before.” They all stared at him, waiting for him to continue, “Most of you are still very young,” he said, “Most of you have never met a slayer before, but know that the slayer, though human, has strength and wisdom that humans usually don’t have. The slayer can kill you easily if you aren’t on guard. Some slayers have even been known to destroy entire covens. If I hear of anyone who has been drawing attention to him or her self, I will personally end their lives, if the slayer doesn’t get to them first!” He looked around to see if his messaged had gone through to them, and when he was satisfied he said,
“ The meeting is over!”
The vampires started shuffling out of the room, and as soon as the room was empty, Nick sat down in the big chair behind him. He closed his eyes and released a deep sigh. Something told him, that this particular slayer was big trouble. To be honest, he was kind of afraid, but he could not let his coven know this. He had to be strong for them they were so inexperienced. They had no idea of what dangers they were facing. But he did. Hew.
