Mine To Give - Chapter Three
“CUT!”
A collective sigh rang out from the crew. Hayden looked over at George awaiting direction. Beside him he could feel Natalie shaking with frustration.
George walked over to his two stars his gaze shooting back and forth between them. “Everyone take five!” He called out then turned back to them as everyone else cleared out for a break. “Is something wrong? I know this is a very emotional scene but I also know you two can do a kiss much better than what I’m seeing.” The perplexed eyes focused on Natalie. “Is it Matt again?”
“He doesn’t like that I have to kiss Hayden,” Natalie explained, inwardly cringing at how pathetic she sounded. Hayden winced in distaste at the way she said it and frowned at hearing how Matt felt about him.
George nodde“I u“I understand he’s having a hard time dealing with Hayden saving you instead of him. That’s why I let him come on the lot to stay in your dressing room. But he doesn’t see any of the taping so he’s NOT going to see this scene, either. I took a chance just letting him on the lot when this is a closed set. You never know who’s going to tip off the media. You’re letting yourself get too distracted.” A hint of teasing entered his voice, trying to smooth her jitters, “Or you just enjoy doing take after take with Hayden.” He turned to Hayden.
“I’m fine,” Hayden held his hands up and forced a grin he feared would break his face in half. “I have no problem kissing her over and over.”
George laughed, which Hayden had planned, and Natalie chuckled, though it fell out forced and brittle, somewhere between hysteria and deceit. Hayden’s blue eyes searched hers a moment picking up a tight strain that had taken root after that one night. Convinced by them the next shot would stick, George left the set confident and relaxed.
Hayden lowered his voice for her ears only, his eyes delving into hers for answers. “It’s been a month,” a heavy note of frustration underlining each word. “You promised me no regrets.”
“And I don’t have any!” Natalie hissed back, her eyes flashing at being forced to remember how vivid and electric the details of that night still were in her memory.
“Then kiss me!” Hayden shot at her. “Pretend I’m Matt or whoever you’d rather be standing in front of you! Better yet, see me as Anakin! See yourself as Padme! You love me! Act like it!” A hand flew to his head retreating to his side when he realized he’d almost run his fingers through his hair. Not wanting the hair stylist chewing him out, he fisted his hand under clo cloak. Counting backwards from ten he calmed down before he spoke. “Does Matt suspect anything?”
Natalie shook her head, her brown eyes sparkling under the lights. “I don’t think so. I don’t even think it’s you he hates. He’s mad at himself and transferring it to you. He’s getting overly possessive about me. I’ve told him to go back to the States and we’d work things out then but he refuses. He says he’ll feel better if he’s here keeping an eye on me.”
“Keeping an eye on ME, you mean,” A mirthless laugh blasted out of Hayden.
“Well, either way, I’ve promised him I’d think about taking a trip with him when principal shooting’s over.”
“What?” Hayden glared at her.
“I said I’d THINK about it,” Natalie shushed him, her eyes darting around for eavesdroppers.
“I thought you were over him that night.”
“I can’t just hurt him like that,” Natalie averted her eyes from his finding his booted feet more interesting. “I feel like such a heel.”
It galled her that she really did take a perverse pleasure in having to do take after take kissing Hayden. He had the juiciest lips. It was her job, she scolded herself, rationalizing her guilt away. She knew she stared at him far too much and dreamed of him excessively. Her moods alternated between wanting him and hating him for wanting him. It was an unhealthy obsession and she’d just decided that morning after waking from another night of tangled sheets, sweaty skin and unfulfilled dreams that dwelt near pornographic levels in which he starred opposite her, that she was going to test other waters and see just how real this desire for him was.
“Natalie,” Hayden blew out a heavy breath, “we have to talk. I…”
“Ok, kids, let’s get this show on the road!” The voice of the assistant director resounded around the set as he shooed everyone back in.
The scene was everything George had wanted and more. As Hayden and Natalie came together in an emotional goodbye Hayden exuded all the conflicting emotions portraying Anakin’s helpless slide into darkness and his deep love for his wife. Showing all the turmoil of Anakin, he reacted with an emotional tension that held the crew silent and spellbound.
Natalie stepped forward grasping the edges of his cloak, the lights winking off the unshed tears in her eyes. Padme begged him not to go to Palpatine, the suspicions of the Chancellor’s desires for Anakin now heavy on her heart. The argument that ensued was rife with stress. It was supposed to end with a heartfelt kiss, a tortured exchange of looks, then Anakin’s departure.
Everything went according to script until suddenly in the middle of the argument the battle grew heated, the anger and frustration palpable. When Padme needled him about Palpatine a look of fury crossed Anakin’s face and he shoved Padme away from him. Natalie banged her side on the edge of the table and cried out as she fell to the carpet. Hayden continued to stalk angrily to the door.
“Ani!” The choked cry froze him in his tracks, his body poised for flight but unable to flee from the tormented voice. “Ani,” the tearful plea whispered across the room into his ears, “I love you. No matter what happens I will always love you.”
Freed from the dark mists controlling his mind, Anakin swung back to her seeing tears glistening unmistakable tracks down her cheeks. The sight of her crumpled on the floor drew a horrified gasp from Hayden when he realized what he’d done. Rushing to her side he scooped her up covering her face with kisses, punctuating them with remorse for what he’d done to her.
“Don’t go to him, Ani,” Padme implored.
“I have to,” the words tormented Anakin. “I have to obey him. If I don’t you’ll die…”
“I don’t care!” Padme grabbed his cloak again, pulling him nose to nose. “Don’t do it!”
A shudder ran through Anakin’s body signaling his defeat to the threat of Padme’s death that Palpatine had threatened. “I would rather die a million times if it would save you. This is the only way I can keep you alive for now. I am barely hanging on to who I really am and I have to go so I can kill him before he hurts you. I can defeat this dark person trying to take control of me! I know it! But if you die…there’s nothing to live for anymore. If you die…he’ll have killed Anakin Skywalker, too”
Tears filled his eyes as his hand cupped her cheek. “I’ll be back for you when this is over. Get a message to Obi Wan and tell him what has happened. He’ll be there for me.”
“No! No…don’t! He’ll kill me anyway and he’ll have you!”
“I love you,” the words fell fervently from his lips. “You are my soul, Padme, the very heart of my life. I’ll come back for you.”
The kiss that ensued had the female crewmembers scrambling for tissues, the males’ mouths hanging open at the wealth of emotion on display. Hypnotized, they stared, watching tears crawl down Natalie’s cheeks, hearing her whimpers mixed with his soothing murmurs, forgetting for the moment it was just a movie set and they were just actors.
George watched…and waited. “And…CUT!”
The crew erupted into applause and cheers and Hayden reluctantly released Natalie from the kiss. The two blinked at each other in confusion then looked over at everyone. Hayden wished for the floor to just open up and swallow him. George hated anyone deviating from the script and they’d just done it royally!
Natalie hoped the makeup hid her embarrassment. When Hayden had shoved her she’d carried on even though they both slew way off script. She’d forgotten and lost herself in Padme and for the first time really saw Anakin and Padme and their struggle. It hurt. No, wait, her side hurt.
“Are you all right?” Hayden reverted to his considerate self, extending a hand to help her up. “I didn’t mean to shove you.”
“No, I’m fine,” she breathed, wiping the tears off her cheeks with the back of her hand.
The set grew still and the two looked over at a group huddled around George replaying the scene. Both winced waiting for the moans as George ordered a retake. The quiet roared.
George drew his glasses off his nose and rubbed his eyes with a thumb and forefinger. Rick kept shaking his head. Settling the glasses back in place, George’s voice rang out in the silent room.
“If anything happens to this piece of film I will personally have the culprit’s head on a platter. Print it. Guard it with your life. That’s a wrap for today.”
The shouts and applause broke open again and Rick rushed the actors.
“Awesome!” He chortled. “That was simply the best character scene in a Star Wars movie I’ve ever seen. Oh, the hardcore, no romance fans will tip their haughty noses, but the rest of the world will eat it up! Half the crew is crying! What a scene!” As George and Ben Burtt came over he added, “Didn’t I say that day Hayden came for his screen test that they had major chemistry? Didn’t I?”
“Yes, Rick, you did,” Ben laughed and rolled his eyes, “but you say that every time they do a scene!” He turned to Hayden and Natalie. “You brought tears to my eyes…and George’s.
“You’re not mad?” Natalie turned surprised eyes to George.
“I was wrong about Harrison’s ‘I know’ to Carrie in ‘Empire’. I’m not going to make the same mistake twice and second-guess you. Not on something so important to the picture. I wasn’t satisfied with what I’d written anyway. You found exactly what I’d been looking for. Great job, you two.”
Hayden and Natalie accepted the praise caught between a glow of pride and a cloud of unease.
If he knew I wasn’t acting…Natalie thought.
If she knew I wasn’t acting…the words coiled around Hayden’s mind.
Natalie trudged towards her dressing room, her limbs quaking with aftershocks. The past month she had carried on as if things were the same with Hayden. In some ways, on an invisible level, they had grown closer, the exchange of smiles abounding with a level of meaning no one else saw, their demeanor toward each other seen as a closeness born of what was known as ‘the incident.’ Hayden carried the title ‘hero’ though no one said it within his earshot. It would have made him uncomfortable. In Natalie’s heart he stood twelve feet tall above anyone else.
It was that ‘hero worship’ aspect that held her in check. The depth of emotion toward him could have been from having her life saved by him. It kept her in a state of limbo. It restrained her from being more forceful in discouraging Matt from what was probably a hopeless cause. But maybe, just maybe, being away from both of them would help her figure out just how real her feelings for either of them were.
Natalie dwelled on the matter. If only she could quit waking in the middle of the night aching and reaching for him. Now that she had been sexually awakened shouldn’t she want to compare? The logic she used on so many occasions when emotion would have ruled her heart and forced a bad decision told her it was ‘the incident’ that clouded her reasoning and only time would sort it out.
“I just heard!” The words startled her out of her reverie. Matt enveloped her in a crushing hug. “They said you were brilliant, but I always knew that!”
Before she could utter a word his mouth slammed onto hers stealing her breath. In a panic, her hands clutched his forearms to steady herself.
Close your eyes, a voasseasserted itself. Try and feel something…anything!
Eyes closed, Natalie responded…tried to. Bile rose in her throat repulsed at what she deemed a sloppy, sorry example of a kiss, his tongue rough and demanding, forcing its way between her lips. Stomach churning she held the nausea at bay, relief strumming through her when she finally managed to ease away.
Matt’s head lifted, eyes glittering in triumph over her head. Her heart dove at the malicious glint. Hayden stood behind her somewhere, a witness to the cozy scene. She could feel his eyes on her. The wave of nausea rose, a scream of denial clawing up her throat ahead of it clambering to get out.
“I have to change,” she mumbled, squelching the desire to scrub her hand over her mouth.
“Ok, I’ll be at the car waiting, darling,” Matt said in a loud gloat.
Natalie scrubbed her face until every drop of makeup dissolved, her lips receiving extra attention and glowing cherry red from all the friction. Even her tongue and teeth were thoroughly brushed. A cold, hard lump settled in the pit of her stomach. The experiment had gone horribly awry. Matt’s kiss made her feel defiled and dirty. The fact that he had done it to get at Hayden horrified her.
The door swung open creaking on its hinges. A crackle of vibrant electricity raising the hair on the back of her neck, Natalie spun to protest the intrusion. Before any angry words spilled from her Hayden grabbed her, hauling her into his arms, sealing her mouth with his own. A muffled whimper greeted him, her mouth falling eagerly open, allowing his tongue entry. Slim arms wound around his neck binding him to her. He was too angry to notice at first, his tongue delving into the moist cavern where hers waited impatiently for him.
Hungrily his mouth gorged on hers, as if all he needed to survive lay within her depths. Little by little the obvious signs of capitulation seeped into his fevered brain. The slender body straining against his, the swallowing of his breath in greedy gulps down her throat, the sensual slide of her tongue while his mouth crushed hers all slithered into his senses, heightening his awareness of her desire for him. Fingers yanked his hair trying to wind the short strands around them seeking purchase while she balanced on her toes, her hips sliding against his.
“No!” Hayden wrenched his mouth from hers his heavy breathing harsh to her own anxious panting. Long seconds stretched while they stared at each other. Natalie’s stomach rolled again, but this time with a craving so carnal it made her dizzy. Fingers bit into her shoulders pushing her away. Blue eyes knifed through her condemning her to Hell.
“It’s not what you think,” Natalie gasped for air, refuting Matt’s earlier kiss. “I didn’t…”
“Tell me you didn’t sleep with him!” He rasped, shaking her shoulders. Natalie’s head bobbed back and forth on her slender neck, her heart hammering in her chest.
Hayden released her and backed away, appalled at his lack of control. Amazed, he stared at his hands unable to slot this side of him into the mold of his character.
“What? No! I…”
The door banged open again. Matt’s beaming, satisfied smile transformed into a sneer as he saw Natalie jump and Hayden pivot towards the door, fury blazing in his eyes.
“Well, well, I see I can’t keep you from barging in where you don’t belong,” Matt spat at Hayden, failing to acknowledge the warning pulse in his jaw. “Come to sample what’s mine?”
Matt crumpled to the floor, Hayden’s fist moving so fast all Natalie heard was the dull thud of it connecting with Matt’s jaw. Towering over the slumped figure Hayden glared at Matt who held his jaw and moaned.
“Don’t you EVER do that to me again.”
The s sns snarled out of his mouth. Natalie almost didn’t hear them, but she heard the hushed threat in his gravelly promise. Without a backward glance Hayden closed the door, the only sound the snick of the handle clicking into place.
Chocolate eyes locked onto the pitiful heap on the floor, astounded at Matt’s actions. Disbelief clouded her delicate features. And she had balked at hurting him? Disgust overflowed the dam containing her emotions. It rammed the wall, chunks of sanity cad awd away in the tumultuous swells.
“What did you say to him?” Natalie demanded in an icy rage.
Matt groaned and rolled sorrowful eyes to her waiting for her to come to his aid. “I didn’t say anything to him. Oohh…”
“ ‘Come to sample what’s mine?’” Natalie fumed, arms crossing her chest, foot tapping. “What was that?”
“It hurts!” He whined.
“Good.”
Matt’s hazel eyes flinted with loathing.
“I’m going to sue that bastard!”
All his bravado shrank under Natalie’s scorn.
“You’re not going to sue anyone,” the words dripped venom. “Get out of here. I can’t stand the sight of you.”
THAT sunk into his senses halting his tantrum. Mouth agape, he realized his major error and stumbled to his feet.
“You’re right, Nat,” Matt lowered his eyes in remorse, hand nursing his cheek. “I was way out of line. I don’t know what happened. I came in, saw him, and just got so jealous I babbled crap at him.”
“Go away.”
“Natalie. Honey.”
“Go. Away.”
The stony expression never wavered. Matt threw his hands up in disgust. “This is all HIS fault!” He ranted.
“He wasn’t the one spouting uncouth slop.”
Matt reined in his anger recognizing the thin ice he was skating on and eagerly agreed with her assessment of his actions, his head reminding Natalie of one of those bobbing dogs in the back of car windows.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You’re right. I was a jerk.”
“Go back to your hotel. I’ll get a ride to my apartment.”
“No, Nat! I’ll…”
Anger flamed her insides. “I don’t want to see you or talk to you tonight or tomorrow. Do you hear me? Stay away from me so I can cool down or so help me you’ll regret it.”
Matt caught his breath at a Natalie he’d never seen. Eyes bright she stood as an avenging angel and he dared not cross her.
“Do you understand me?”
“Yes,” he mumbled, turning away. At the door, his shuffling feet stopped. “I really am sorry, Natalie. I know I shouldn’t be jealous but he came to your rescue when I should have. It’s my fault. I promise it won’t happen again.” Silence. “I’ll call you day after tomorrow. I’ll leave you alone until then.”
“That’s the smartest thing you’ve said all day,” she refused to look at him, afraid she’d take a swing at him herself.
Unable to get anywhere with her, Matt left, his mind already working on how to gain her forgiveness and understanding and let Hayden take all the blame. An idea popped into his mind. Of course! He snapped his fingers. Perfect! Humming happily, he strutted to the car and drove away, his mind already consumed with all the details he needed to take care of the next day. He’d be too busy to see her anyway. She would be so overjoyed she’d be falling all over him! And Hayden Christensen would be on the outside looking in with no chance of ever topping him again.
“S’long, sucker,” Matt hissed under his bre “I “I’m in the driver’s seat from now on. For good!”
