Chapter 4: Spotlight Spot
The story was unfailingly simple yet riotously captivating. It was about a boy and a girl that met each other on a train where the girl, who was hopelessly drunk called him her love and collapsed in his lap. Of course, the young man was mortified, but there was nothing that he could do but bring her back to his flat until she was coherent enough to tell him where she lived.
That was the start of an amazing tale of utter opposites. For the girl was a hopeless optimist and the boy was an incurable pessimist. She was fun loving; he was morbid. She was too nice; he was too cruel. A match that could never succeed and yet it did.
Despite the simplicity, maybe even because of it--- A Whirlwind Affair was getting good reviews, a nice summertime movie. No, it wasn’t as clever as The Girl Crowd, but it was a great debut for Emma Lange in a lead role alongside Orlando Bloom. There was also the gossip going around that the acting pair were in actuality a dating pair, which was why Emmy had chosen Elijah to escort her to the New York Premiere.
Orli, being good natured about everything had taken her decision in stride, after all she’d been bluntly clear about why she had chosen Elijah over Orli. It was to keep the rumors down, and besides, it was easy because he’d asked first. Slow to ask, was no to go.
Over the past three months as the technical crew was editing and getting it ready, Elijah had come to London when he could. She’d even once gone to New York, where he’d met up with her. She smiled, they were great mates--- she felt lucky to have two like Orli and Elijah.
With his hopelessly blue eyes, Elijah studied Emmy’s pale and auburn beauty. No, she wasn’t classically beautiful, but there was a fragility about her that brought out his protective side. Even though, she had told him why she’d chosen him, he hoped that that wasn’t the only case.
When they stepped out together form the limo, the media was stunned. The reporters had been expecting to see Emma Lange with Orlando Bloom. But quick to recover, they started snapping pictures like crazy and throwing out questions like mad:
“Are you dating Elijah Wood? What is the extent of your relationship? How long have you two been together? Mr. Wood, you are dating Julia Damon’s best friend? Have you heard of Miss Damon’s crush on you? Miss Lange, have you ever dated Orlando Bloom?”
This was one part about the acting business she was not fond of, but it unfortunately could not be avoided. “I will not confirm or deny anything,” she remarked with a mysterious edge. “All I will say is that Lij and Orli are great chums to know.”
Elijah grinned at Emmy and was about to lead her along the red carpet when a reporter asked bluntly, frankly rudely, “Did you steal her from Orlando Bloom?”
All the reporters were jotting down the question, waiting for him to answer. He was stuck in a horrible position, if he said yes--- well, that wasn’t good, if he said no--- they would twist his words around and make it seem like he was lying. The damned, depraved press.
It turned out he didn’t even have to answer because Emmy was outraged for him and retorted, “Of course, he didn’t steal me!”
It was then that the limo carrying Orli and the three hobbits arrived. Emmy was glad that they’d come because she’d gotten to hang out with them quite a bit, but she was still sad that Lia hadn’t been able to make it. Her schedule didn’t allow for it, though she had tried.
So Orli, knowing her disappointment had invited Dominic, Billy, and Sean to have a full blown party after the screening. As the four guys made their way to them, that same infuriating reporter attached herself like a leech to Orli’s side, asking him the same question: “Did Elijah steal Emma from you, Orlando?”
He grinned slowly and tilted his head at Emmy’s direction, giving her an insanely intuitive gaze as if to say he knew precisely how to handle it, that he knew what the situation was. “No, love, he did not. If she were ever mine, stealing her wouldn’t be possible.”
The press was going to have a field day with that information. It basically said that Emma was dating Elijah, the overtones were that anyway. Oh well, there was nothing they could do now, so she took Elijah’s hand and Orlando’s, walking with them into the theatre. There were worse names hers could be linked with after all.
~
It was during the after screening party that her cell phone began vibrating like crazy. Before she answered it, she got an offhand comment by Orli, “Kinky.”
“Very,” Dominic agreed, “she must have set it to the maximum power.”
Rolling her eyes, she greeted her caller, “Hello?”
“Emmy!” Lia exclaimed from the other end. “I am so sorry that I couldn’t make it to the premiere. I feel so awful, but I’m still stuck in Paris. But guess what?!”
“What?!”
There was a brief pause because of the damn frustrating static. “I have a free weekend next week. It turns out that there’s a problem with the casting that needs to be worked out, so I can fly to London and hang with you then like the old times.”
“That is the best news, Lia,” she responded enthusiastically, her cheeks flushed with her excitement more than with her alcohol intake. She knew they were trying to get her drunk because last time they’d failed miserably in the attempt. She was a control freak.
“I’ll call you later,” Lia commented. “I can hear that you’re at the party. Call me when you get up tomorrow morning and we’ll talk, okay?”
“Okay!” Emmy had to shout because the give boys were being boisterous on purpose to get her off her phone. When she had gotten off, she glared at them venomously. “That was intolerable!”
“No,” Orli responded, taking her phone away from her, “that was intolerable.” He slipped her phone back into her purse, away from view. “I think you need to do something to make it up to me.”
She grinned, she never was able to stay angry at him for long. “So what do you want me to do to make it up to your offended male ego, though I have no idea why you are?”
“You were ignoring me,” he explained and he patted his lap. “I think a kiss will do.”
She glanced around at all five of them. “I do not think that would be fair for all of them if I kissed you and not them. I was ignoring them too.”
“Elf boy is easily offended,” Dominic remarked. “We are not as sensitive as he is.” Glancing around at the rest, who nodded with agreement, “Go ahead and kiss him. We have no objections. Do we mates?”
The three boys swiftly shook their heads, but Elijasitasitated. At the back of his mind, he did not want to see Orli kiss her when she was his date. He was overreacting, and he knew it. But he couldn’t help it though--- he was sensitive.
Everyone glanced at Elijah, who still hadn’t given his response to Dominic’s question. Even Emmy was staring at him, waiting for his answer. When he noticed everyone was gazing at him, he slowly gave his consenting nodd. There wasn’t anything else he could do.
“I think Lij wants her to kiss him,” Billy stated with a telling grin. All of them suspected that Elijah liked Emmy. They just wanted to confirm those suspicions. “So how ‘bout it, Emmy?”
Typical of the bto fto force the decision on her when they were the ones to prose the decision-making. Considerately, she suggested, “How about I give you all a hug?”
Dominic looked at Sean and Billy, both who shook their heads vehemently. They wanted to see live action kissing; they were especially looking forward to seeing her kiss Elijah. It was certainly going to be interesting to watch her and Orli kiss because of the passion they’d seen on the big screen was undeniable.
“So what are you waiting for?” Billy quipped. “I think you have two kisses to dole out, and you’re getting off leniently--- it could, should have been give, Emma girl.”
The guilt Orli felt was unbearable. It was all done in good fun and great humor, but he knew better than anyone how Elijah felt about Emmy. The underlines of distraught envy on Elijah’s face was clear to him. “It’s okay, Emmy,” he said softly, winking at Elijah. “You can kiss only Lij, he’s your date after all.”
The decision was made. Emmy turned to Elijah and smiled. “I guess I have no choice,” she remarked candidly. “But I have heard you were an awesome kisser.”
Smiling back at her, he knew she was trying to help him out. In the short time that they’d known each other, he felt like they truly understood each other well. They were great friends, but he wanted more than that. This was his opportunity to put a physical show of his passionate crush.
He cupped her face tenderly and tilted his head to the side, catching her lips like a thirsty man drank from a fulfilling fountain--- in utter desperation. She had little control in the intoxicating kiss. Elijah was in command as he deepened the kiss insistently, though never pushing her where she didn’t want to go. He went as far as he knew he was allowed.
As the rest of them observed the kiss, all had different yet similar thoughts. The hobbit trio were pleasantly astounded by the heated kiss; Orlando felt sickeningly shocked at the passion he thought was only between him and her.
It was she that pulled away from the overpowering embrace with her eyes dilated and her mind perplexed. She hadn’t been thinking that a kiss from Elijah was going to be like that--- that overwhelming. Where had all that emotion come from?
He took her by the hand and pulled her with him. “We have to talk,” he explained to her as much to the group.
Orli knew very well what Elijah was going to speak to her about. It still didn’t make it easier. He remembered vividly the conversation they had had a while back:
“I need to make sure about something,” Elijah began with an antsy anxious voice.
“What mate?” Orli had asked easily, sprawling his toned body on the couch. “Anything you can say to me.”
“It’s about Emmy,” Elijah remarked. When Orli failed to have any expression on his face, Elijah was forced to continue on with what was needed to be said, “If you don’t want her, I want to date her.”
That wasn’t what Orli had been expecting Elijah to say, but he wasn’t necessarily stunned. The past few days, he had seen how Elijah had been staring at her when she was oblivious to everything. His Em was always losing herself to the clouds.
“Why not?”” he responded lightly, like he didn’t care. There was no way for him to object, really. It wasn’t like he was going out with her. The fact was he hadn’t even really thought of it. So how could he deny his best chum and his best mate happiness together? He couldn’t, that was it.
The problem was that for the weeks and months since then, he had. Emmy had noticed right from the start the different, awkwway way he’d been treatier, er, instead of his typically casual fashion. She’d asked jokingly if she’d grown another lewd limb all of a sudden, maybe?
He sighed mentally. There was no going back. He’d already given his go-ahead. He may act the playboy and all, but when he said something--- he kept his word no matter what. It didn’t matter if his change of heart--- not one bit, he’d already given his word.
~
He led her to a secluded corner of the party. “So what do you need to talk to me about?” Emmy asked in an airy tone.
Glancing anywhere but at her intense grey flecked eyes, he murmured tenderly, “I like you, Emmy.” He paused for a moment to gather his thoughts. “Will you give me a chance, will you go out with me as my girlfriend?”
That was astounding. Not what she thought he’d say, then again why should she be? She knew Elijah liked her, which was why he’d made time to visit her. The only thing that concerned her was that she knew that Lia still liked him. She couldn’t do that to her best mate.
What was even more troubling was that she did not know who she preferred, Elijah or Orli. How would she know unless she tried though? She wouldn’t know unless she did. When she’d made up her mind, she’d taken so long that he was anxious enough to try furiously to light a cigarette.
The blasted concoctions never lit when they were suppose to. But he finally got it and she took it away, throwing it into the trashcan. That shook him, made him look at her as she linked her arms around his neck. “Look at me,” she commanded, so he did. “Yes.”
At that answer, he bent his head down and gave her the kiss she had thought he’d give her before. It was soft and soothing, smoothly gentle. When they drew apart, she smiled sweetly at Fr Friendship had been the first step, this was the second.
