Chapter Four: After Dinner
~*~
"He's coming over here after dinner tomorrow," Lily said as she entered James' flat.
"Hello to you, as well," James snorted. "Is he okay?"
Lily gave James an odd look before settling down on his sofa. "I'm worried about him, James. Have you noticed that he barely eats anything?"
"Kind of hard not to notice," James replied, sitting opposite Lily. "I've tried to talk to him about it, but he either ignores me or pushes me away."
"Same here," Lily said. "I tried to look in his refrigerator earlier, but he wouldn't let me. He completely freaked out and begged me not to."
James opened his mouth to speak, but Lily talked first.
"I suggested you two meet for dinner, but he was against that idea and insisted it be after dinner. I didn't question him because I wanted to make sure that you two met up. But I'm really worried."
James ran his fingers through his hair. "Do you think he's anorexic?"
"I don't know. I think it's a possibility."
"How am I supposed to find out?" James asked worriedly. "I'm not sure that he trusts me anymore. I said some really hurtful things to him."
"No kidding. He's beginning to think less and less of himself, I think."
James stood up and started pacing around the room. "Gods, I'm such an idiot. He would never hurt me."
"No, he wouldn't."
"But I've hurt him," James said unhappily. "Haven't I?"
"Perhaps," Lily replied, standing up. "Look, I need to get home. I've barely seen Remus all day because I've-"
"Been so busy playing the matchmaker?"
Lily grinned. "Exactly. If Sirius doesn't show up tomorrow evening, you will tell us, won't you?"
"Of course. I hope he does come, though. I need to talk to him."
Lily nodded her head. "And he needs to talk to you, James. Good luck."
"Thanks. I'll need it!"

As soon as James heard someone knocking on the door, he ran over to it and opened it.
"Hey," Sirius said softly as he walked inside. "Did Lily telu thu that I was coming?"
James closed the door and nodded his head. "Yeah, she's intent on getting us together as quickly as possible, I think."
"I noticed," Sirius commented wryly.
"Do you want anything to eat?" James asked carefully.
"No thanks."
"Anything to drink?"
Sirius shook his head. "James, I'm sorry that I'm I don't know I'm sorry that I'm the way I am, I guess. What I'm trying to say is that all of those other guys well, I shouldn't have even been with them. Ever. I've wanted you all along, but I knew I could never be with you, so I just dated all of them. They never meant anything, but I see now it was a big mistake to be so-"
James leaned forward and silenced Sirius by gently kissing his lips. When James pulled away, Sirius was staring at him with wary blue eyes.
"Don't apologize, Siri," James whispered. "I'm the one who should be apologizing. You've done nothing wrong. What I said before well, I shouldn't have said any of it. I know that you would never hurt me. I'm sorry, Sirius. I love you so much, and I desperately want to be with you. If you'll take me after I was such a bastard to you."
Sirius studied James for a moment before speaking. "You had every right to say what you said the other day, James."
"That's not true, Siri!"
Sirius shrugged his shoulders. "You really don't have a boyfriend?"
James shook his head. "I haven't for months, like I said before. You're the only one I want. I shouldn't have said that I had one. I've been saying a lot of stupid things recently, haven't I?"
"What about my hair?"
James tentatively reached forward and grabbed a few loose strands of Sirius' long hair. Sirius watched while James gently touched the smooth pieces of hair.
"I stand by what I said before."
"You weren't just saying that?" Sirius asked quietly, still watching James play with his hair.
"Absolutely not. I've always loved your hair, Siri."
"When you said that, were you hoping something would happen?"
James moved his hand from Sirius' hair to Sirius' neck. He looked into the beautiful blue eyes he loved so much. "Yes, I was."
"And then you got scared?"
"Pathetic, isn't it?"
"You're supposed to be outgoing. You're not supposed to be afraid of anything, James."
"Guess I was afraid of losing you, Siri."
"Idiot," Sirius murmured as he brought his lips to James'. The two melted together as Sirius wrapped his arms tightly around James' body, and James' hands found their way to Sirius' long locks. James eventually stuck his tongue into Sirius' mouth, and the kiss deepened quickly.
"Argh, why'd you stop?" Sirius asked, pressing his head against James' shoulder.
"Had to breathe," James replied, holding onto Sirius.
"Still scared?" Sirius mumbled.
"Absolutely not," James said. "I love you, Sirius."
"And I love you, James," Sirius replied as he lifted his head and passionately kissed his best friend again.
Several minutes later, James took Sirius' hand in his own and led Sirius across the room to the sofa. James sat down and then pulled Sirius next to him. Sirius snuggled up against James and started fiddling with James' necklace.
James watched Sirius for a moment before tugging at his own hair again.
"What is it?" Sirius asked, looking up.
"What do you mean?"
"Whenever you pull at your hair like that, it means you're nervous about something. Is it me?"
"Merlin, no," James replied, lowering his hand. "I feel completely comfortable and perfect with you, Siri."
"Then what?"
"Why aren't you eating much?"
Sirius tensed in James' arms and started to sit up. James pulled Sirius closer to him and kissed Sirius' head. "What's going on, Siri? How much do you eat in a day?"
Sirius sighed and looked up at his new boyfriend. "I think Lily wants to know the same thing. Is she putting you up to this?"
"Not really. She is concerned, Siri, but so am I."
"What I'm going to tell you you're not going to tell her and Remus, are you? I mean, eventually I'll say something, but not yet. I'm only telling you because well, because you're you, James. If that makes sense."
"It does," James said softly. He slowly ran his fingers through Sirius' hair. "And I won't tell, but you probably should eventually."
"I-I don't know how to say this, James. You guys are right. I'm barely eating anything. But it's just that "
Sirius stopped speaking and looked at James with tears in his beautiful blue eyes.
