Chapter Four: One Big Problem
Kate watched as New York passed her by in the Taxi. Her hands were neatly folded in her lap, despite her lousy mood. Orlando got into the taxi and they were off to the hotel. He looked nervously at her and then quickly turned his head. He already knew she was mad at him for something. She finally turned to him.
“We need to talk.”
“I saw that coming.” He said to her, matter-of-factly.
“It’s about yesterday. I know I was out of line, but you know I have a point. I don’t know if I can trust you, Orli. Like last night. How am I supposed to know what you did and didn’t do?” She looked into his eyes.
“You’re supposed to believe in me. Believe in us. What else are we supposed to do in a relationship?” He argued back.
“Well, you don’t trust me.”
“You don’t trust me either! I come home and immediately it’s Twenty Questions!”
“You know that’s not true!” She shouted back.
“How do I know, Kate!? Tell me! Because I would REALLY love to know!” He turned to the cabbie, “Let me out.”
And before Kate could stop him, he was walking down the street to his hotel.

The next morning, Karen woke up on her couch, like a normal morning should be. She got up and made breakfast while feeding Sora. Then, she unlocked the shop and finished her eggs downstairs. The snow had driven off most of her customers, except a little red headed teen. She had been coming into the shop everyday for a while now, looking at the basses. Karen decided to talk to the girl.
She walked over, Sora at her heels, and started to look at the instruments as well. The girl seemed to have faded jeans and a black jacket on as well as a dark blue beanie cap. Her hand knit gloves traced over the strings, making some notes appear from the bass.
“Beautiful, aren’t they?” Karen said.
“Yes…” The girl answered.
“We’ll be getting a new shipment in next week. Nothing big, just a couple more instruments.” She commented.
“I’ve always wanted a bass. But they cost so much, and I’d never learn to play it.” She looked over at Karen, frowning a little.
Karen grinned and took an Epiphone off the wall, “I’ll tell you what. You come in here for a while and I’ll give you lessons and a job if you want. That way, you’ll be paying for the lessons and the bass guitar of your dreams.”
The girl’s frown melted away and a giant smile replaced it, “REALLY!?”
“Of course! Just check with your parental units first." The girl jumped up and hugged Karen and then bounded out of the store.
Just then, Mike dragged his feet in after the girl. Karen looked at the clock really quick and saw that it read 11:00. She scratched her head.
“Mike… what’re you doing here?” She approached him, arms folded across her chest.
“Well…” He paused, sorting his thoughts before continuing, “I wanted to ask you something.” He looked at her neck and saw the mark.
“Is this about yesterday?”
“Yeah… I wanted to know what that was… I mean, I didn’t know you liked to have flings with actors…” He scratched the back of his head.
“You shouldn’t assume stuff. Assumption makes an ass out of you and me.” She walked over to the cash register, “I’ve already told you a million times! I don’t like you in that way, Mike. And that wasn’t a fling. It was a favor.”
“A favor!? You just wish I was dead, don’t you!?” He got angry.
“I NEVER said that!” She shouted.
“Well, your body language sure did!” he turned his back on her, ready to leave the shop.
She put her hand on his shoulder and made him stop. He turned around to see her looking up at him. She seemed to have tears in her eyes, but he wasn’t sure. It could always be the lighting. Wasn’t she just mad a second ago?
“Don’t speak of death like that!” She threw her arms around him, crying into his chest, “You don’t know what it’s like to lose someone so close to you!”
In his confusion, he patted her head to try and calm her, “I’m sorry. Shh… It’s okay. I’m so sorry, Karen. I forgot how you felt for a second. I felt betrayed. I mean… I like you so much. I’d say that I love you, but I don’t think that’s how I feel. I mean… what I’m trying to say is…” She pulled away, looking into his eyes now. He dried her tears, “I’d tell you that I love you, if I could only find the words.”
She grinned, “No matter what you say to me now, I still don’t like you like that.”
“Does that mean Eve’ll still chase me out of the store?”
“As always.”
He sighed, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Then he kissed her cheek, apologized, and was on his way.
She shook her head, chuckling a bit to herself. Then, Karen decided to sweep the shop. The broom was soon dancing along the floor, picking up scraps. It moved around the stands that held CDs and recordings of famous musicians. There were famous people like Bach and Billy Joel. Karen traced her fingers along the rack and continued on her way to sweep up the rest of the shop.
“Wow… You work way too hard, sweetie.” Karen turned to the voice and saw Eve at the door, her car keys in hand.
She walked over, hands on hips, “What’re you doing here?”
“I came to do you a favor, hun!” She shouted, her grin becoming bigger and bigger.
“Wh-what’s that supposed to mean?” Karen asked in confusion, “And what’s with the pet names!?”
Eve simply smiled and took the shop keys from Karen’s pocket. She took the raven-haired girl’s hand and led her from the store. They walked down the street, the blonde leading the parade. The musician had no jacket on, so the leader rushed down the street to a nail place. When they walked in, the women there stared at Karen like she was from another planet. Then again, she was wearing a black Metallica shirt and plaid pajama pants. Not to mention her Cons.
“What’ll it be today, Eve?” A blonde woman approached them.
“Two manicures, please.” She responded. The woman took Karen first and led her to the back. She picked out a dark, grayish blue that would match her eyes and any dark clothing she might wear in the future.
The girls left together an hour later, their nails done. They ran down the street back to the shop. Karen quickly unlocked the door and they both rushed in. They laughed all the way up the stairs where the two had dinner. It had been such a long time since Karen cooked something, so at first, it was a bit rocky. But she finished the job and left the rice to cook slowly.
Eve was in the living room, playing with Sora. She knew that Mike had come back that day too. He saw her on the street that morning and bought her coffee. The second she met up with him, he told her his plans. She seemed amazed at the Creep’s requests, but really ignored everything he said. Karen walked into the room.
“So… why did you take me to that nail place?”
“I kinda felt like you needed it. You sorta seemed out-of-it yesterday.” She smiled and stood up to sit on the couch.
Karen sighed, “I know… I know. But it’s not my fault. A lot of things have been happening lately. Plus, you know what next week is, don’t you?”
“Yeah. I’m sorry, I just figured it was something else. I know how this time of year is always hard for you.” Eve said as she hugged her friend.
“It’s not a big deal. But thanks anyways.” She got up and they both walked into the kitchen. They finished dinner and were soon sleeping, although Karen couldn’t sleep soundly the entire night.
