Adrienne heaved her bags in her arms as she exited the shop. Plopping herself down on the bench, she pulled out her cell phone as she waited for Yoochun to come hunt her down to claim his prize.
Pffft, boys….
She scrolled through her text messages and opened the new one she had received from Nicole. Adrienne figured that she had missed it while all the chaos was going down.
I’m sorry you are having a crappy day, if it makes you feel better, my day has been horrible without you here to spend with me. I swear the rest of this summer is going to suck. Anyway, shoot me an email later and tell me all about it, right now I have to go to work, catch ya later, lylas.
Adrienne sighed as she stared at her phone. After a few moments passed a voice broke her out of her thoughts. “
“That’s not from your boyfriend is it…because I don’t want to step on any toes with this whole thank you dinner thing tonight,” Yoochun stated as he leaned against the outside of the building. Adrienne looked up at him and the thought of telling him that there was going to be a big, scary and angry man coming after him became increasingly appealing.
“No, it was just my friend back home, nothing to concern your pretty little head about,” she replied sardonically as she flipped her phone closed. She stood up and faced Yoochun, “Where are you friends, I would like to get this over as quickly and painlessly as possible.” Adrienne said as she shifted impatiently.
Just as she finished her statement the group from earlier plus the one guy from the fitting rooms stepped out. All eyes fell on her and she couldn’t help but blush. Turning her face in attempts to hide any sort of pinking of her cheeks, she cleared her throat, “Hi I’m Min, I’m sure Yoochun has already told you about me. So where are we going?” she quickly stated, trying to get through the statement as quickly as possible. The four looked at Adrienne and then back at Yoochun.
Finally the one in the cap spoke up, “Hi, I’m Yunho…so does Yoochun wear boxers or briefs?” Yunho grinned and then gasped as Yoochun jabbed him the side with his elbow. Adrienne’s mouth went agape after she heard the statement. She spun around and stared angrily at Yoochun ,”You said you were going to leave that part out!!!” She yelled, her dark green eyes shooting daggers at the offending person in front of her. The only response she got from him was a nervous cough, a scratch of the head and a finger pointing to his friend from the fitting rooms, Jaejoong.
“Hey, don’t try to pin this on me! You were practically gloating at the checkout counter!” Jae said in attempts to defend himself. He couldn’t help but think that he didn’t want to be on the receiving end of those angry eyes. The other two, Changmin and Junsu, were trying not to laugh as Yoochun cleared his throat and shifted nervously. “Well, it’s a moot point as it is so, let’s get going, I believe that Changmin said that he was hungry,” he said as he picked up his bags, along with Adrienne’s, and starting walking down the street.
“Hey!! HEY!” Adrienne yelled as she jogged to catch up to him, “Don’t think that you are getting off that easy!!”
The six of them successfully made it to a restaurant without anyone being maimed or killed…not that anyone hadn’t tried. Adrienne straightened her auburn hair, brushing her bangs out of her eyes as she attempted to look a bit less disheveled. She wasn’t at all pleased at the day’s progression. First having to deal with an obnoxious cousin, then the imposing affections of his friend and now having to deal with a snobby guy who had tricked her into buying him dinner. Life for Adrienne was going downhill…and fast.
The hostess sat them at a large round table in a corner of the large room. Adrienne tried to position herself on the end, figuring that if things got too bad she could make a run for it, but was unfortunately sandwiched in between Yoochun and his hungry friend Changmin.
I guess there are worse things than being squished between two cute guys…wait did I call him cute?? I need a drink…
She stared at her menu like it had become the most interesting thing in the world to her and she was becoming increasingly aware that she had no idea what to order. Not only had she not really eaten an extensive amount of Korean food, she had no idea what to call any of it…and the descriptions next to the meal choices were less than helpful. Deciding that she didn’t wish to ask Yoochun for help, figuring that he would con her into doing something else for him later on, she turned to Changmin. “Changmin, would mind helping me pick something to eat?” she asked sweetly as she held out her menu to him. Changmin blushed slightly at the attention and quickly looked at the menu. “Well, this one right here is really good, that’s what I’m planning to order…but this one is also really good. Tell ya what, if you want, you can order that and then you and I can share, that way you can taste both,” he replied, shooting her a very cute smile.
finally a decent human being…I was beginning to think that there weren’t any left…
“Oh that sounds perfect, thank you so much!” Adrienne returned his smile and followed by taking a sip of tea that the waiter had brought out. She glanced at Yoochun long enough to catch him sending an annoyed glance towards Changmin. He shifted in his seat and took a gulp of his own tea. Changmin looked at Yoochun and then at Adrienne. Adrienne met his confused glance and they shrugged their shoulders simultaneously.
Luckily the waiter popped up and took their orders, helping to break the tension, but once he left, it settled right back in.
“So, Min, where did you get your contacts, they look so natural?” Jae asked, breaking the suppressing silence at the table. “Contacts? What do you mean?” Adrienne asked, genuinely confused. “You’re eyes, they are green, now, I may not be that old, but I surely haven’t ever seen a Korean person with green eyes, at least not naturally green that is,” he replied, gazing at her intently. Adrienne swallowed nervously.
Oh no…I didn’t even think about this situation…as if things weren’t bad enough, the last thing I need is for my heritage coming into question.
A good few seconds went by as Adrienne weighed the option of telling the truth to lying through her teeth. Jae raised his eyebrows as he waiting for an answer. Adrienne glanced around to notice that now all eyes were on her.
Great…well it’s not like I ever plan to see them ever again, so who cares!!
“Uh…they aren’t contacts. They are my natural eye color…my hair too” she replied shyly, running her hand over her hair. “My mother is Korean but my father was American, so…that would explain my features.”
The group of boys seemed rather shocked by the news, causing Adrienne to blush and hide her face a bit. Adrienne was never one to be really shy, but she also didn’t fancy being the center of unwanted attention.
“That would explain your accent too...” Yoochun added, “I thought that you’re Korean sounded a bit funny.”
oh god here it comes
Adrienne cringed slightly and tensed, waiting for the verbal blow of disgust, but it never came.
“Wahhhh! Really?? That’s cool, I wish I could have exotic features like that…even the half-Koreans that I’ve seen never had anything different than brown eyes and black hair!” Jae exclaimed as she leaned towards her eagerly. “So where did you live in America? Is it cool? What’s it like??” Jae eagerly bombarded her with questions before Adrienne could even catch her breath. She was obviously surprised by the general reaction. She had expected something more along the lines of banishment or a stoning.
“Ahh, well I moved around a lot, because my dad was in the military. We lived in a couple places in Europe, not that I really remember because I was so young, and then when I was ten we moved to Japan, where I was lucky enough to learn Japanese. And after three years I moved to Florida. I lived there through middle school and high school. Once my dad died, talk of moving back to Korea started stirring and once I graduated from high school and got accepted to SNU, we started preparations to move back here. And now…here I am.” She finished by raising her hands slightly in the air.
They all nodded and seemed quite interested in my short explanation. Yoochun frowned slightly before saying, “Sorry to hear about your dad. That must have been rough…” He sifted as the waiter placed his food in front of him.
“Umm thanks…it was but, I’ve gotten through it rather well I would think. In fact, the whole reason I came here is because he wanted me to go to a university here. He also held some romantic notion that I would meet a guy and fall in love like he did with my mom…but the world is different nowadays.” Adrienne replied, picking up her sticks. “Mmm this looks really good, thanks for the advice Changmin.”
He nodded as he stuffed his face with some rice and vegetables covered in a spicy sauce. He handed his bowl towards me and swallowed, “Please, try some! It’s really good!” he smiled eagerly as he continued to wiggle the bowl full of vegetables. Adrienne picked up a few and placed them on some rice and took a bite.
“Oh wow! This is really good!! I’m going to have to get on my mom about cooking more Korean food.” Adrienne pushed her bowl towards Changmin and insisted that he try some of hers since they had decided to share. Yoochun shifted a bit and said, “Hey why don’t we all share, that way we can taste a bunch of different things…” He started shifting dishes on the table so that they were all accessible to everyone. Junsu and Yunho gave him a curious glance before sliding their dishes along with everyone else’s. After everyone had eaten their fill and the waiter had cleared their dishes, Yoochun piped up, “Hey, how about some after dinner drinks!” He gave Adrienne a sideways glance and a little wink. She couldn’t help but scowl as he rubbed it in. Everyone agreed and drinks went around.
Adrienne took a sip of her champagne and looked up at the group. “So what do you all do?” she asked, setting down her glass. “Well,” Junsu jumped in, “:We are all recent high school graduates, like yourself. We were all lucky enough to get into SNU though” he leaned in and whispered, “Yoochun barely passed the entrance exams…he spent too much time sleeping rather than studying.” Junsu snickered and grinned at Yoochun, who was currently glaring at him.
Adrienne chuckled. It wasn’t that surprising…he seemed like the kind of guy that would be a slacker. She laughed some more before she jumped in her seat and let out a small yelp of surprise. A loud banging was coming from the window behind her. She turned to find out what the source of the offending noise was and she was faced with a girl. She looked around her own age and was covered from head to toe in accessories.
Man how long did it take her to get ready in the morning…?
“Oh no...” Yoochun murmured, “Not her…” Adrienne looked back to see Junsu, Yunho, Jae and Changmin all snickering at their friend, who looked absolutely miserable. Before Adrienne knew it, the plastic clad girl had positioned herself in front of the table, obviously excited that she had spotted the group of guys.
“Well hello, I didn’t expect to run into you guys,” She said, shooting a smile across the group before her eyes landed on Adrienne, and that smile quickly disappeared. “Who’s she?” Adrienne’s eyes darkened at the hint of contempt in the annoy girl’s voice. “This is Min, she’s new to Korea.” Changmin announced, smiling and putting a comforting hand on Adrienne’s shoulder. “Well,” the girl replied, “She certainly doesn’t look Korean. Anyway…how are you Yoochun??,” the girl asked sweetly as she shuffled closer to her object of affection…who was currently squishing Adrienne into Changmin in his attempts to get away from her. “I’m fine Jin…” he said, pressing himself further into Adrienne, who was making small grunts of protest. “In fact, I’m on a date. I just happened to run into my friends here, so we all decided to eat together.” He sighed, smiling at his clever scheme.
Adrienne, who was less than amused, joined the four other guys with her look of shock, which was then preceded by a scowl.
Actually this is quite perfect…now who is gonna owe who…
Jin made an unpleasant facial expression towards Adrienne, who returned a sweet smile and caressed Yoochun’s arm. “Yes, since these guys already crashed our date, why don’t you join us, the more the merrier!” she said, as she kicked Yoochun under the table. He winced but turned to her and smiled sheepishly.
“Oh..no, that’s ok, I just wanted to stop and say hello, I’m actually on my way out with some friends anyway. See you guys later.” Jin replied as she frowned and turned to leave. Once she was safely out of the restaurant, Yoochun sighed and slumped in the booth. Adrienne took this moment to give him another good swift kick under the table before she murmered out the side of her mouth, “Now who owes who…” He winced again and replied, quietly, “Sorry, I panicked, I suppose we are even.” After a few minutes, Adrienne whispered to him again, “Do you mind scooting back over, you know, unless you really want me in Changmin’s lap. He’s cute, I don’t mind.” Yoochun gave her a quick scowl before moving to give her some space.
“That was some quick thinking and some good acting…” Yunho finally said, “Jin still stalking you I take it.” Yoochun downed his glass of wine and nodded as he refilled it and Adrienne’s. “She seemed….pleasant?” Adrienne added, taking a sip of her refilled glass. “Oh there is no need for pleasantries, Min,” Junsu chuckled, “We all know how insufferable she is.” Adrienne snickered, “Good I’m glad that I am not the only one that thinks that.
A few more drinks and about an hour of conversation later, Adrienne finally relented to exhaustion and buzzing head. “Well, I thank you for a wonderful evening, I truly did have a lot of fun. It was nice getting to know you all, but I think that it’s about time I get home. I don’t want my mother to think I was kidnapped my first time out in the city.” Adrienne smiled as she reached for her purse, ready to pay for her part of the meal. Yoochun rested his had on hers and shook his head and whispered, “Don’t worry about it, it’s my treat since you helped me out of my sticky situation.” Adrienne pulled a confused expression, “But, I thought you said we were even…” Yoochun shrugged and threw his credit card on the table before she could protest any further.
“Hey well, why don’t you give us your contact information, that way we can show you around Seoul and the such, since it’s safe to assume that you don’t know anyone.” Junsu offered. Adrienne smiled and nodded, writing down her number, address and email address. “Here, feel free to call anytime, I assure you that I won’t have anything to do.”
After she finally returned home, she immediately made her way to the stairs to go to her room. She didn’t feel like talking to anyone, well maybe her mom, but she didn’t want to run the risk of bumping into her evil cousin or his psychotic friend. She opened the door to her room and her elation of salvation was shattered as she heard her cousin’s voice behind her.
“You’re home late…most of the shops are closed by now. What have you been up to?” Adrienne practically growled as she turned, “Nothing that concerns you, if you don’t mind, I would rather not look at your face, it’s making me nauseous.” She snapped as she slammed the door behind her.
Ha-Jung chuckled as he stuffed his hands in his pockets. His friend Jin had called him earlier practically sobbing that some girl fitting Adrienne’s description had stolen her precious Yoochun. Not that he particularly wanted to be in the middle of his cousin’s business, but he knew that it would drive her up the wall, which made it completely worth it.
Adrienne sighed as she turned on her beside lamp and kicked off her shoes. After writing a quick email to Nicole, she promptly collapsed into sleep, not bothering to change clothes and not noticing that she had forgotten her shopping bags at the restaurant.
