Chapter Three
Hugging her pillow tight, Emmy snuggled deep into the covers. With her eyes close tightly she was clinging onto the last moments of a peaceful sleep. She was beginning to cherish her time alone, especially in a house crowded with people. Then out of the foggy quietness of dreamland she heard her name being called. “Go away.” She mumbled tiredly. But the intruder wouldn’t leave. She felt a hand gently push at her shoulder, and she did her best to push it away.
“Come on Little One, time to wake up.” A husky voice whispered to her.
Even in the deep recesses of sleep, her mind knew that voice. She could hear that Irish brogue in her sleep and know exactly who it was. Blinking her eyes, she slowly began to open them. Kneeling down at her bedside was Kian. He smiled down at her and she could see the tenderness in his soft blue eyes. Emmy tried to focus on his face but a wave of tiredness cascaded over her. “Kian? What are you doing here? What time is it?” She groaned.
“It’s eight a.m.” Kian whispered to her as he smoothed her hair from her face. “Time to rise and shine.” He kissed her softly on the forehead, his lips brushing against her skin.
“Eight a.m.! God go away!” Emmy tried to bury her head under the pillow.
But Kian wouldn’t let her. Chuckling, he grabbed her pillow and tossed it away. “Come on, it’s not that early. We’ve a lot of catchin’ up to do, Emmy. We’ve nine years to make up for.”
“I thought this was your vacation? Don’t you like to sleep in during your vacation? Don’t you have a girlfriend to see?” Emmy groaned as she rolled over onto her back.
“I told Jodi that I had an important meetin’ today.” Kian’s eyes shone with mischief. Emmy lifted her head to stare at him. When he saw the look Emmy was giving him, he shrugged. “What? I do. Bein’ with ya today is important.”
“She’s going to hate me for taking you away from her on your vacation.” Emmy muttered as she tried to cover her head with the duvet cover.
Kian reached up and pulled the covers away from her. “No she’s not. She knows that I like to spend time with me friends when I’m back home.”
“Do I really have to get up?” Emmy groaned. “It’s way too early.”
“Yes, ya have to get up. I’ve a whole day planned for us.” Kian tugged on her hand.
Sitting up in bed, Emmy ran her hands over her face. That’s when Kian noticed what she was wearing. A light cotton cammi top barely covered her ample breasts while a pair of matching shorts accompanied it. He stared at the outline of her nipples against the cotton. He felt his mouth go dry as he stared at her. For a brief second Kian didn’t see her as his best friend but a very beautiful enticing woman. His body began to think for him as it also took notice. Mentally shaking his head, he tried to get a grip. After all this was just Emmy. Emmy looked up at him with a puzzled look on her face. “Are you ok?”
Giving her a small smile, he nodded. “Yea deutz, I’m just waitin’ for ya to get your lazy bum outta bed.”
Growling at him, Emmy stood. “Why I thought I was glad to see you is beyond me.”
Smirking, Kian gave her a hug as she tried to push him off. “It’s just like old times. Remember when you used to sneak over to me house and wake me up?” When Emmy nodded, he laughed softly in her ear. “Now it’s my turn.” He pulled away as he playfully gave her a little swat on the bum. “Go get dressed.”
Giving him a mock glare, Emmy stuck her tongue out as she made her way to the bathroom. “I’ll get back at you Kian Egan.” The last thing she heard before she slammed the bathroom door was Kian’s wicked laughter.

Walking along the dirt path, Kian kicked a stone with the toe of his shoe. To get away from everything he brought her somewhere no one would think to look for them, their special place. He had come here often in her absence, as he sought to get away from the crazy world that was now his life. Without her it had seemed empty and alone. Now that she was back it had a sort of living vibe to it. Casting an almost devilish glance in her direction he caught her staring over at him. “What’s wrong, Emmy? Have I suddenly grown horns since ya last saw me?”
Emmy’s face flushed crimson as she realized that she had gotten caught. Letting a small burst of nervous laughter out, she shrugged her shoulders. “No, it’s not that. It’s just…”
“Just what?”
Walking over to the nearest bench, she sat down. While the soft spring wind whipped at her hair, she looked up to find Kian standing over her. “So much has changed since I left.”
As he reached out to brush the hair from her face, Kian smiled as his fingertips grazed the silky skin of her cheek. “You don’t even know the half of it.” He replied cryptically.
Covering his hand with her’s, Emmy tugged on it so that he sat next to her. “I’m serious. I mean take you for example.”
“What about me?” Kian sat down next to her. He turned to face her as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. He pulled her into his body, laying his head on her shoulder.
“Look at you.” Emmy motioned with her hand. “Tall, blonde and handsome.” She felt herself blushing again as Kian chuckled. “Do you still wear your glasses?”
“Sometimes, mostly for readin’.” Kian nodded. “But look at ya! I mean you’re not the same wee lass I used to know.” He teased as he tugged on a stray strand of hair. “The girl I used to know wore those tight braids and a private school uniform.” He looked down at the faded jeans that she wore, and how they fit her like a glove. Once again his body started to take notice before his brain did. Then the sunlight decided to peek out as it lit up the highlights in her hair. “I don’t think they allow jeans like this in private schools.”
Emmy rolled her eyes. “Not you too. Uncle Sean has been on the subject of my clothes for days now.”
“Well I can see his point.” Kian eyed her outfit. “I mean when ya wear somethin’ like that darlin’ it says only one thing to a man.”
“Oh and that would be?” Emmy raised her eyebrows.
Kian leaned forward and stared into her eyes. There was several seconds of silence before he spoke. “It says, Take me. I’m all yours.” He winked at her. “Men have fun undressin’ women wearin’ clothes like that.”
“So your girlfriend wears clothes like this?” Emmy giggled.
Kian pulled back at the mention of Jodi. He flashed Emmy a cheeky grin. “Oh yea.”
She laughed as she shoved him lightly. “You men I swear.”
“What? Can I help it if I’m slave to a woman in a bra top and tight jeans?” Kian snickered as Emmy shoved him again.
Emmy cocked her head as she stared at him. “Are you happy, Kian? I mean do you think Jodi is the one?”
Kian was taken back by her question. It sent him into a shocked silence for a few seconds. He hadn’t really thought about marriage or the future with Jodi until now. In truth he didn’t have an answer. “Hell Emmy, I don’t know.” He raked a hand nervously through his hair.
“What, tell me she just isn’t something to fill the time?” Emmy frowned her disapproval. “Please tell me you are thinking with your brain and not something else.”
“Emmy Marie McAllistair what a thing to say!” Kian didn’t like how the spotlight was suddenly on him and his love life. “No, it’s more than that. But as for a weddin’, fuck I don’t know.” Then he quickly changed the subject. “What about you? Any lads back home who make you hot-n-heavy?”
Emmy blushed as she looked the other way. “None of your damn business Kian John Francis Egan.”
“Ooo is that a yea?” Kian tried to tease her, but it was the thought of someone lusting after his Emmy that had him frowning. No man was good for her, and no one ever would be. She was his Emmy and the thought of some other man stepping in to be her protector had didn’t sit well with him.
“I’m not answering that.” She wouldn’t budge.
“Come on, ya can tell you’re best mate in the whole world.” Kian nudged her.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” There was instantly a note of pain in her voice that Kian immediately picked up on. He put a hand on her shoulders and squeezed gently. Without warning he started to get angry at the thought of someone hurting her.
“Hey how about we go get some lunch?” Kian offered. “Let me buy ya lunch.” He took her hand in his.
Giving him a grateful glance, Emmy nodded. “That would be great.”
“I know this great place in town. Ya might have heard of it. It’s owned by this family, Filan, I believe.” Kian gave her this innocent smile. “Food is good but the service…” He shrugged his shoulders. “That Shane needs a lesson in customer service.”
Emmy started laughing as she gave Kian a big hug. “You are something else, Kian.”
“Just what am I?” He asked as he hugged her back.
Pulling back to look into his blue eyes, Emmy shivered as she spoke. “You’re the best, Kian.”
Brushing his lips against her cheek, Kian whispered into her ear. “Never forget that, Little One.”

Emmy took a deep breath of the fragrant Irish air. With her arms crossed behind her head, she looked up into the night sky. Tonight there was a full moon that shone down on the two friends as they lay looking up at the stars. She could hear Kian breathing softly next to her. Turning her head slightly she reached over and nudged him. “Kian are you falling asleep on me?”
There was a soft chuckle in the darkness as Kian reached for her hand and squeezed it. “No, Little One. I’m just enjoyin’ the peace and quiet.” He intertwined their fingers as he moved a bit closer to her. “What about ya? Not thinkin’ of fallin’ asleep on me are ya?”
“No, I was just trying to remember which star was ours. Remember when you came to bust me out of my room when my father punished me?” Emmy asked quietly. For some reason even though they were the only ones out there, it just felt right to whisper.
Kian smiled in the dark. “Yea, I remember. You were eight and I was ten. You were punished cause your dad caught ya sneakin’ in after havin’ dinner at me house. Then after your mum and dad went to sleep, I came. I came to your window and we lay out in the grass just watchin’ the stars. I told ya that if ya ever got scared or lonely that all ya had to do was look up to the sky. All ya had to do was look for our star and think of me.”
“Which one is it?” Emmy asked as her eyes peered.
“I can’t believe ya forgot which one it was.” There was hurt in his voice.
“No, I didn’t forget. I just don’t see it tonight.” Emmy protested as she looked.
Kian got up on one elbow and leaned close to her. He took her hand in his and raised her arm to the sky. “It’s that Little One that looks like it’s blinkin’.” He pointed it out.
“Oh yea, there it is.” Emmy exclaimed excited.
“It’s the tiny one. Just like you, my Little One.” Kian whispered as he lay down next to her.
“Do you and Jodi ever come out here?” Emmy asked as she laid her head on his shoulder.
Kian shook his head. “No. She doesn’t come to Sligo often. I usually have to go to London. She’s an actress so she’s busy in the city.” He kissed the top of her head. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been out here.”
“I’m glad I found you again, Kian.” Emmy’s voice was small in the darkness. “I don’t feel so alone anymore.”
Reaching over, Kian gathered her up in his arms. “You’ll never be alone, Emmy. I swear to ya, I’ll always be there for ya. Always.”
