Chapter 4
When I awake it’s nighttime. The room was dark, but from the window I could hear the sounds of night, characteristic of this region of city -- sirens, drunken shouts, the bark of dogs, loud music, the screech of brakes. I looked at the clock, on the table near the bed. Two thirty-four in the morning. From all appearances, my angel still had not returned.
I carefully stood up, turned up the light and examined my shoulder and leg. They seemed much better so the antiseptic must have worked. I bandaged it again with a clean bandage. My head is spinning and I feel like shit. Must be a post- traumatic fever. I go to bathroom and look through the medical supplies of my angel. When I find the right bottle, I take two aspirin pills and wash them down with water, then get back into bed.
“God damn, that kid doesn’t even have a TV.” I murmured with annoyance. I need to know, if the police have been called to investigate what I did earlier.
My thoughts were interrupted by sound of the door opening. My angel appeared on the threshold, both hands full with takeout. “Hi. Sorry, I was delayed.” He set the bags on the table that held his make-up. It smelled and looked like chicken soup.
“I took the liberty of getting something for supper. I wasn’t sure if you’d be up to eating out, or if you’d even want to, so I just got their soup du-jour. It smells good to me.”
My stomach confirmed his words. “Thank you,” was all I said.
“How do you feel tonight?” he asked, worried. “Are you sure that you don’t need a doctor?”
“I’m all right. I’m a little sore and fevered but it’s OK. I’ll live.”
“OK, then. You need to eat while it’s hot,” he said.
“What about you? Will you eat too?”
“Yes, but I need to take a shower first.” With those words he left the room.
I don’t know why, but suddenly he seemed a small figure, sad and defenseless.
I think you need to thank your hero, hey, Mr. Jones?
But when I go to stop him I realize I still don’t know his name. However, he doesn’t know mine, either. Well… I’ll thank him, as soon as he comes out.
When I was full, my angel finally came out. He was dressed in sweat pants and a white T-shirt. His hair was still wet from shower and he’d washed the make-up from his pretty face.
Did I say pretty?
He set a meter from me and started eating his soup.
“Hey… I... um… I think it’s time to get acquainted and… I wanna thank you for your help.”
“Hey, that’s OK. I always thought that if in this world someone were able to help whomever, this world wouldn’t be so bad, huh? My name is Darren. Darren Hayes, if you want.” He smiled.
“Nice to meet you, Darren. My name is Jones. Daniel Jones.”
“I’ve seen films about James Bond. Are you secret agent too?”
"Nearly," I answer and burst out laughing.
Darren stood then to clear away the empty boxes from our meal, and I saw dark purple bruises on his arms.
“Hey, what is that? What happen to you?”
Darren paused for a moment. Not turning his head, he answered. “Nothing. I fell. I fell in the stairway. Silly, huh?”
I certainly didn’t believe him. They were obviously left by the hands of a person.
“Come, let me see your arms.”
“It’s all right. There’s no need.”
I noticed that he tried to pull away from me.
“OK. It’s your business anyway. Tell me how we’ll divide that bed? You have only one bed, right?”
“Well…. I can sleep on the floor…. You don’t want to catch cold while your wound is healing."
“No," I answered. "I don’t think you need to sleep on the floor because of me. We can sleep together. Don’t worry, I don’t bite.”
Darren stood in the doorway uncertainly. Finally he came over and climbed into bed behind me, facing away from me. Within minutes he was asleep.
