Part 4: Neko-chan goes on a trip


It was very early in the morning but, as it was summer, the sun was out and lit up Tokyo with its bright rays. In his room, Shinya tilted his head and clamped the handphone between his ear and shoulder as he placed in his folded clothes into his bag.

“ I can’t just leave without my neko-chan. But I don’t know where he is!” Shinya moaned to Toshiya who was on the other side of the line.

“ But our van is going to leave this morning. Have you searched your whole house?” the bassist asked.

“ I searched my house, the carpark and the streets for him but…I couldn’t find him…” Shinya said sadly.

“ Don’t worry. We’ll only be away for 10 days for the gigs. You said so yourself: he was a stray, so he knows how to take care of himself…”

Shinya sighed as he put his hairbrush in and zipped up the bag. “ I hope he’ll be alright…What if he thought I abandoned him and never come back?”

“ Shin-chan, stop worrying and get your butt over here! Your cat’s going to be fine and he’ll come back for sure…because he knows you love him so much^_^~”

“ I hope so…”

A stub of cigarette fell to the ground to join many others. Die stepped on it, extinguishing the burning tip. He wondered if Shinya’s coming out from his apartment soon. Since that ‘incident’ in the park last week, Shinya had given him the cold shoulder, refusing to speak to the redheaded guitarist unless absolutely necessary.

Die sighed inwardly. The only time he got to see Shinya’s warmth was when he’s walking on four legs. Die knew he should have talked to Shinya earlier but...better late than never. He didn’t know what to say anyway…even now when he was standing just yards away from Shinya’s apartment.

Taking a deep breath, Die mentally rehearsed what he was going to say to the young drummer. ‘ Shinya, I’m sorry about the other day. I know you’re angry but something happened then…I was scared and confused so…I chickened out.’ Doesn’t sound very cool but Die could not think of what other explanation he could give. ‘ Please don’t be angry at me…in reality, my feelings for you ar-”

*SPLASH*

Die blinked, staring at the flower pot in front of his face.

“ Oh my…did the water get on someone?” An old lady muttered as she lowered the water-hose over the flower bed. “ My sight is going…” she shook her head as she continued watering her plants.

‘ Of all the rotten luck-_-;” Die cursed the heavens as he shook his furry body vigorously to get dry. As he turned around to go look for hot water, someone picked him up.

“ Eeowrrr!” he protested, kicking out his hindlegs.

“ Neko-chan!!” Shinya exclaimed happily. “ I thought I had to leave without you! What happened to you? You’re all wet!”

“ Oh, my water might have accidentally got your cat. Sorry there, young lady,” the old obaasan said as she woddled back into her house. “ I’m sure I saw a red-haired man there…” she muttered, shaking her head.

Shinya lifted an eyebrow. “ Such a strange granny^^; I’m no young lady, am I?” Shinya smiled as he carried the cat in his arms back to the apartment. Behind him, a happy and excited Miyu trotted along.

“ Sumimasennnn~” Shinya called out. “ I’m sorry for being late,” the drummer said as he walked up to his other bandmates.

“ Oh, Die’s late as well,” Toshiya frowned, looking at the time on his watch. “ Where is he…hey!” Toshiya’s eyes lit up and he squatted down to see what Shinya carried in his pet carrier. “ Is this your cat? Aww, it’s so cute!” Toshiya poked a finger in past the plastic bars to tickle the cat’s ear.

Kyo bent down slightly to peer at the ‘animal’. “ ……”

Kaoru caught everyone’s attention by clapping his hand. “ Alright, we’re going to leave now.”

“ Eh, but Die’s not here,” Toshiya said, looking up questioningly at the band leader.

“ Well, uhm…he messaged me. Says his going there on his own.” Then he turned around quickly to the sound technician. “ Fuka, we’re set to go.”

“ I’ll sit at the back,” Toshiya announced cheerfully as he climbed into the van. “ Come sit with me, Shinya.”

All the members and the other crew staff entered the vehicles and they set off on their way to their first gig.

“ Why aren’t you sitting with Kaoru as usual?” Shinya whispered to the bassist as they started off. Miyu was taking a nap on his lap as her owner gently stroked her back.

Toshiya pouted. “ We had a fight.”

“ Again?”

“ I don’t want to fight with him but…” the bassist sighed. “ Let’s not talk about it.” Toshiya’s eyes shifted to the pet carrier at Shinya’s feet. “ Can I take the cat out and play?”

In the cage, Die’s ears pricked up to hear Toshiya say that. He’s been getting car-sick and claustrophic, boxed up like that on the floor of a van. When the gate was opened, he quickly clambered out but was caught by Toshiya.

“ Wah, I’d love to have a pet at home but Kaoru’s so fussy. Saying that the fur will get all over the furnitures.” Toshiya propped Die on his lap.

“ That’s true though! My vacuum gets blocked up with furballs everytime I clean the house!” Shinya laughed.

“ Hand shake??” Toshiya put out his hand and was amazed when the cat lifted its paw and touched it to his hand. “ Wow, Shinya! Neko-chan’s so smart!”

Die: this is so spastic-_-…

“ High-five!” Die lifted his paw up and slapped it against Toshiya’s palm.

Shinya was wide-eyed. “ I didn’t know he could do that!”

Die gasped when Toshiya suddenly hugged him to his chest. “ He’s so adorable! So fluffy!”

‘ I can’t breathe…!’ Die meowed loudly.

Toshiya giggled. “ Look, Shinya. A hamster!” He pushed Die’s cat’s ear down to the sides. “ And…a rabbit!” Then he pulled the ears up and backwards.

“ Ahahaha!” Shinya laughed.

‘ Helpppp meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ Die would scream if he could. ‘ I’d rather play with Miyu than with Toshiya!’ Not able to hear a single word, Toshiya continued to play with the little kitty. Suddenly the journey seemed like it would take forever!
