‘Tonya I think I should call her’ Gerard cried out, he was past pretending he was alright, Tonya let out a sigh of relief, he had been bottling up his feelings for so long now she was beginning to wonder if he had a heart at all. Today, in the middle of their lunch he had cracked. It started when a woman resembling Katy walked past, she had watched his eyes follow the woman, and sense he was then nervous and edgy. Suddenly from nowhere he threw that sentence upon her and she was more than happy to deliver her well-rehearsed speech.
’I can safely say if you call her I quit.’ She smiled, edging over in her seat to hold his hand, ‘Gerard you are a wonderful man, you deserve so much better than that. She has hurt you and your coming to grips with it, true. Don’t call her you will only hate yourself for it.’
’I am trying to keep busy but I still feel sick every time I think of her’
‘you will, she hurt you but please believe it will get better. There are many out there who love you and want you to share you feelings, you know you can always talk to me.’
’I know’ he smiled, squeezing her hand back, ‘I have honestly never felt this bad in my life’
’I’m so sorry’ Tonya replied.
For the rest of their talk he held her hand, she could feel him trembling and didn’t know what to say anymore, nothing else needed to be said.
‘Ok Butler that’s everything, get out of here’ Tonya smiled, helping Gerard lift his suitcase into his car, ‘The guards are waiting at the airport they will escort you, then when you wish to leave Scotland call me and I will arrange the return escorts’
’Safe as houses’ Gerard smiled, slamming the boot shut. ‘Come here you’ he laughed pulling her into a hug, ‘Thank you’ he whispered. ‘You the only woman in my life I can depend on’
’don’t let your mother hear you say that’ Tonya laughed, ‘Go on get in there, and don’t spill your coffee’
’As if I would’ he smiled, waving goodbye as he climbed into the drivers seat. Rolling down the window he drove off, headed for his home.
The house was beautifully furnished; he wasn’t a man who tolerated mess for too long. Its deep colours and expensive art, add with plush furnishings told visitors of a well-educated man, sure of himself and his surroundings, at that moment Gerard felt anything but. It had taken him a few minutes but finally after setting foot in the place he had walked around collecting her things in his arms. The silence surrounding the house was deadly, and it cut through him, it reminded him of that fateful day he found out his life was over.
The house had been just as silent; he had sensed something was wrong immediately. Dropping his bag he had searched all the rooms, and resigned to the idea that his love mustn’t be in, until he heard noises from upstairs. Heading up to his bedroom he could hear grows, groans of pleasure. Pushing open his bedroom door, he felt his stomach drop as he looked upon them, so caught up in each other they barely noticed him. Crying out in fury he launched himself at them, throwing her roughly to the floor and half throttling the man who had destroyed his world. Without looking back he had left the room, demanding she be out of the house within a week. That was months ago, he hadn’t had the gall to head back home, it had remained empty for months, save for the staff.
Gerard blinked, pulling himself back to reality. Finding him self facing the same bed, he must have wandered up here while thinking, The bed was gleaming in the sunset, but it disgusted him, he knew he could never sleep in it again. Hearing the front door open slightly he fled to the hallway and peered down the stairs, seeing his housekeeper his heart lifted.
’Good grief Mr Butler, I didn’t expect you beck so soon. You should have called I have nothing in the cupboards.’
Smiling he headed down the stairs, and hugged her warmly. ‘I thought it time I returned to this place, I have missed you’
’don’t try and flatter me, your still only getting a sandwich for your supper.’ She smiled, pleased to have him home.
’How is Attila?’ Gerard asked, laughing out loud at the look of disgust on the woman’s face.
’Don’t ask me, I don’t go near the beastly thing. The stable boy has been feeding it, I cant abide the beast’
shaking his head while chuckling Gerard headed to the back of the house and opened the door to his back room, walking over to his vivarium, he unlocked the lid and smiled as his python raised itself to taste the air, as if it sensed its owner, it rose up and circled his body, wrapping its silky body around him and hissing softly in his ear. Gerard ran his fingers over the snake’s scaly body and smiled, he loved this creature above all others. Walking back out to the kitchen he backed off as Ada shrieked, ‘I will not have that thing in my kitchen, away with you, be gone’.
Ada watched him walk away, the snake still wrapped around his body and laughed, knowing he would go and sit besides the roaring fire and pamper his pet some more. Sighing she set about trying to find a nice filling for his sandwich, ‘ill have to do a big shop tomorrow, so I can feed him something decent’ she murmured to herself. Glancing out over the estate she stared at the horse wandering about in the huge garden and smiled. Life here was fine.
Gerard had bought the estate a few years before, as it was situated close enough to the main airport in Scotland so he could be round and about, but secluded enough for the privacy he desired. Initially Ada and himself hadn’t seen eye to eye. Ada had lived and worked in the house for most of her life, serving the family who had occupied Langdon Manor before him. She hadn’t been impressed at the idea of a celebrity taking over the house, her head full of thoughts about wild parties, drugs and woman. That wasn’t how she had lived; it wasn’t what a house as beautiful as Langdon Manor was for. Gerard hadn’t been sure of the woman’s cold manner when he first met her and thought she resented him for taking over the place. 4 years on, the two adored each other, Gerard relied on her for the housework and her company, while she loved mothering him having no children herself there was nothing she loved more than making sure he had clean clothes and a full stomach. She found him to be a kind and considerate boss, constantly giving her holidays and helping her out about the house.
Fixing his sandwich Ada turned to the left and spotted a picture of Gerard and Katy. Glaring at the photo, she picked it up and dropped it in the bin, it hadn’t passed her attention that everything else of the hussy’s had been removed from the house; she figured he had missed this one.
’I liked that one’ Ada jumped as Gerard walked back into the kitchen, thankfully without the snake.
’Sorry Mr Butler, I don’t mean to be out of place I just noticed the others were gone and thought you had missed this one..’ she stammered.
’Ada how many times do I have to ask you to call me Gerry?’ he smiled, lifting the picture from the bin and staring at the happy faces.
’At least one more time Mr Butler’ Ada grinned, watching him launch the picture back into the bin. ‘Might I ask what I should do if Miss Katy calls here again?’
Gerard had grabbed a drink and sat at the table, ‘She calls?’ he asked, genuinely shocked at the news.
’Well she came to collect her things, and then again saying she had left things. I wouldn’t leave her alone for a second though, didn’t want her taking anything of yours’
’Thank you’ Gerard smiled, looking about the room and digesting this news.
’Then she called a few times asking where you were. She refused to hand over her keys’
Gerard smiled, ‘Have the locks changed’ he was finding it ironic that he was locking out the one woman he loved, but he knew he had too. His heart couldn’t take anymore. ‘If she calls again tell her I’m not home, I have nothing to say to her’
Ada placed and sandwich in front of him and stood at his side, ‘She also gave me this’ she whispered, placing a huge engagement ring beside his plate. ‘I’m sorry sir’
Gerard picked it up and stared at it, then passed it back to the woman, ‘Keep it.’ He sighed, ‘And show it to me every time I start to believe real love exists’
’Gerard’ Ada cried, watching his head snap up at the use of his first name, ‘You cant give up on love. Your girl is out there! You just have to…’
’My girl’ Gerard shouted, ‘just ripped my heart in two, there is no one else for me Ada. End of conversation’
Ada glared at him, as he walked out of the kitchen, this wasn’t over by a long shot. Her eyes fell on the table and saw his untouched sandwich. Gerard appeared at the door again, ‘Call Ted ask him to saddle up Johnson, and can you please arrange the removal of that bed upstairs, I will be on the sofa tonight’ his voice was lighter but his mood was still dark. Ada watched him leave once more with a heavy heart, he was trying his best to cope she could see it but resigning to never love again was the worst thing he could do. Lifting her phone she called across to the stables to get the boys attention and told him to do as Gerard asked. If she knew Gerard he would ride for hours, just running away. Away from his pain for as long as he could.
Elizabeth brushed out her hair once more and cursed its curls for the billionth time; they were so wild and uncontrollable. Giving up she threw some mousse into her lock and pulled them into soft ringlets. Why she was bothering she wasn’t sure, she was only walking the dog. Grabbing her jumper, scarf and coat she wrapped herself up and laughed as Tyson her giant Akita charged toward her, with his collar in his mouth. Clicking it on his collar she was half dragged out the door as he jumped about with excitement. Strolling down through the small town she waved goodnight to the locals, the sky was darkening fast. Reaching Langdon Manor, she jumped under the fence and let Tyson off his lead. Hurling his ball she watched him run after it and relaxed, this was her favourite place to come and be at peace. She knew she was trespassing, and that made her feel guilty, but there was no where else she could take Tyson, and she always picked up his business. This place had been empty for months anyway, she consoled herself, if no one will make use of the gardens then she would. Elizabeth laughed as she saw Tyson falling over himself to bring her the ball back, and threw it once more. Leaning back against a large tree, she wondered what it would be like to live somewhere as beautiful as this. Peering closer at the house, her breath caught in her throat, the lights were on. Even more alarming was the sound of hooves coming toward her. ‘Tyson’ she cried, running for the fence. Tyson was quick on her heels.
’Wait’ the man roared, jumping down from his horse and catching up with her easily, grabbing her by the arm he stopped her, ‘what are you doing? This isn’t a park!’
Elizabeth was trembling, she couldn’t see his face in the dark, but his voice commanded respect. ‘I’m so sorry, only its usually so deserted and my dog. My dog attacks other dogs, this is the only place that owners don’t bring their dogs.’ She was stammering now, and Gerard felt bad, he released her arm and tried to make her out. He knew she was female, but the dark made it impossible to work out if he knew her or not.
’I always pick up his business’ she continued, ‘and we don’t make any mess, I would never have come if I knew you and your family had returned, please. I am so sorry. This is the only place I can let Tyson go wild you see, I am sorry Sir’
Gerard couldn’t help but laugh, his anger wasn’t at this woman, it was at Katy and it wasn’t fair to be rude, ‘Call me Gerry’ he smiled, ‘No sirs here, I own the Manor but I’m not Lord’
Elizabeth was fidgeting around, wondering what to do next when he continued.
’Since you are a polite trespasser, I give you permission to use the gardens, so long as I never find dog leftovers, if you understand what I mean. You may let your dog run wild as you say’ he chuckled.
’Gerry’ she repeated, ‘You don’t have to.’
’Please, your right someone should make use of the Gardens I’m never here. This way you can come by day instead of creeping around at night’ he joked. Shivering as the cold his him, he could hear his horse plodding around behind him, ‘Where is your dog anyway’
‘Aww my little baby?’ she asked, before shouting the dogs name.
Gerard peered around the ground, expecting a small mutt of something. However when the giant dog walked slowly over to him he jumped back in alarm, ‘That’s not a dog’ he cried, ‘That’s a bloody bear!’
’Noo’ Elizabeth laughed, bending over to cuddle her dog, ‘He’s a baby. The biggest softie you will ever meet, he just hates Male dogs. Being an Akita his ancestors were bear hunters, and there’s still that urge in him to be the dominant force wherever he is.’ Elizabeth could see Gerry was still wary of getting too close, she couldn’t see his face clearly but he had gone very quiet, pushing her dog forward she insisted he stroke him.
Gerard was busy staring at the dog’s huge teeth, when he realised that demand was being made of him. Not to want to be seen as a coward, he reached his hand out timidly to pat the dog’s head. He smiled as he lost his hand in its soft fur, then cried out in shock as the dog lunged forward, barking wildly knocking him to the floor. For a moment he thought he was a goner, until he could feel its tongue licking his face.
’Tyson’ the woman cried, pulling him off and throwing his ball so he ran off. Laughing wilding she helped him up and apologised over and over again. ‘He just gets excited, I am sorry’
Gerard laughed, relieved to be alive and wiped his face. Elizabeth handed him a tissue and tightened her coat around her, ‘Well I had better be leaving now’ she smiled, ‘Thank you for not killing me’ she chuckled.
’Wait I don’t even know your name’ he pleaded.
’Elizabeth’ she replied, smiling in the dark, while she shook his hand.
’I hope to see you soon Elizabeth,’ he smiled, mounting his horse, in time to see Tyson running back, ‘Not sure I want to see you again’ he laughed, glaring at the dog. Turning suddenly he asked, ‘You don’t live far do you? Only its dark now and..’
’No its not far about 20 minutes or so, I have this brute with me anyway’
’Right, I’ll ride alongside you, never let it be said that Gerard James Butler let a lady walk home alone, even if she has a bear with her’
Elizabeth laughed and opened the gate for his horse to walk through, then stopped suddenly. ‘Gerard?’ she asked, watching him walk into the lampposts light, she could see him perfectly. ‘Gerard Butler, its me, your pen pal Elizabeth!’ she laughed watching his face light up.
’No way’ he called, jumping from his horse and walking to her. ‘I don’t believe it, I was going to call you in a few days’
’You,’ she smiled, ‘You saved me’ she remembered that night vividly and welcomed the hug he pulled her into. ‘Thank you’ she whispered.
’God your freezing, come on come in the house, I’ll make you a cup of tea then walk you home later’ he smiled.
’I didn’t even know you were home’ she laughed, ‘Not that I had right to know of course’ she realised they wrote to each other but they never just spoke.
’Of course you have the right, you have helped me a lot over these months, you’re a good friend. To tell the truth this was all last minute. Mum doesn’t even know I am home. Come on’
Elizabeth stared as he patted the horses saddle, ‘I am not getting on that thing’ she cried, backing away. ‘I don’t like heights, or horses, or high horses. Gerard no’
’Well we cant walk, its almost half a mile to the house’
’Well trust you to get stupidly large gardens’ she cried, as he pulled her toward the horse, ‘What of Tyson? I cant leave him here’
’He can run alongside’ Gerard insisted, shoving her up in the air and guiding her foot into the stirrup, once she was atop he grinned. ‘You’ll not meet a finer horse than Johnson, 17 hands and a sheer beauty’
Gerard climbed up and sat behind her, pulling himself close, he heard her exhale as their bodies pressed against each other. He didn’t have to sit this close to her, but she didn’t know that, he smiled. Reaching over her arms he guided her hands to the reigns. ‘Lesson one, here hold these reigns and keep them tight’
’Gerry..’
’Shutup, look pull this left and kick your heels in slightly in his side’ Elizabeth did as she was told and let out a small squeak of delight as the horse moved to the left and walked along. Gerard smiled at her amazement and pushed her hair from his face, its fragrant smell wasn’t lost on him but he tried pushing it to the back of his mind. ‘Ok lean over forward’ he instructed.
’Excuse me?’ she questioned as he took the reigns from her.
‘We need to be lower in order to go faster’ he laughed, turning to check the dog was following behind them, sure enough it was walking slowly investigating every inch of the floor. Satisfied he cracked the reigns and pushed Elizabeth lower down. The horse whinnied and shot off at a gallop into the night. Elizabeth screamed with joy and held Gerards arm tightly, as it secured her against him. He felt a fluttery feeling as she cried out in joy, and cuddled her tighter against him, enjoying the warmth from her body, he was almost sorry as the house came closer and they stopped by the stable. Elizabeth was giddy with joy as he helped her off the animal. ‘Isnt there a speed between walking and running?’ she gasped, as she stayed in his arms a few seconds longer than she should have.
’Sure’ he laughed, ‘Trotting, but I thought I would skip that’
’Thanks’ she laughed, pulling herself from his arms, turning to find her dog she saw a shape running towards them barking and stumbling over to his owner. She bent down to cuddle her dog and turned to face Gerard was staring at her intently, confused she stood up and waited for him to move toward the house, when he didn’t she turned away from him and paid more attention to her beloved dog. She didn’t know what to say to pull conversation back up, writing letters to someone was one thing, but talking face to face had her tongue-tied. He was even more handsome in person, than she would have ever believed possible. Plus she knew he was single, and she had just enjoyed being pressed against his toned body on the horse, wasn’t helping her formulate words or get rid of the longing to touch him again.
’So have you seen your mum? Did you say?’ she asked, watching Gerard hand the horse over to a young man, who grinned and led him away.
’No not yet, I hear you two are quite close now’ he smiled, motioning for her to walk towards the kitchen; the light had been turned off so he figured Ada must have headed home.
’Yeah, she’s great fun. After Richard mentioned what you did for me, she came to visit me and see if I was well. We get along fine, and I do her shopping for her what with her foot and all’ she smiled, watching Gerard battle to keep the dog out in the garden.
’What do you mean her foot?’ Gerard asked, turning the kitchen light on, he didn’t look happy about being left out of something.
’She slipped, and sprained her ankle, I thought you knew.’ Elizabeth laughed, ‘Why do you think I put, your mum is getting better at the end of my last letter’
’I don’t know,’ he whined, ‘She never tells me anything’
’because she knows you would drop everything and come and see to her.’ Elizabeth laughed, ‘She is well Gerard, I have been keeping her pampered’
’Thank you’ he smiled, wondering if he could use her kindness ad another excuse for a hug. Deciding against it, he flicked on the kettle. ‘Tea of Coffee?’ he called, seeing her walk into his living room.
’Coffee’ she called back, taking in the splendour of his home.
’Nosy git’ he laughed, ‘Do you like it?’
’Its wonderful’ she called through.
’It wasn’t decorated that long ago, well it feels brand new since I’m never here.’ He smiled, walking through and passing her a steaming cup. Elizabeth found she liked his cream and brown set up very much, kicking off her shoes she flumped on his leather couch and sipped her coffee. ‘It’s a good job we didn’t let Tyson in’ she laughed, eyeing some expensive looking delicate ornaments around the room.
’Oh indeed’ he agreed stoking up the fire and seating himself beside her.
’Are you not a pet person then?’ she asked.
’Sure, but not messy ones, I have Johnson the horse, and then there’s Attila.’ He grinned, ‘they don’t leave paw prints in the house you see’
’Attila?’ she repeated, making sure she had heard him correctly, ‘You named a pet after one of your screen roles?’
’It’s a cool name, and I got the pet while I was filming that series, so it seemed appropriate’
’What pet is that then?’ she asked cautiously noting the glint in his eye, Gerard cackled and grabbed her hand, ‘C’mon I’ll show you’.
Inside he was laughing no woman liked Attila, Ada couldn’t stand to look at him, either could his mother. Katy had been trying to make him get rid of it for years but he flat out refused, he loved it too much. Elizabeth however laughed out loud and squeaked with delight as it rose up to the glass, confused Gerard opened the case thinking she would scream at being asked to hold it. He was pleasantly surprised however when she lifted it carefully and allowed it to slink around her.
’You like to squeak don’t you?’ he asked, stepping closer to her, it was pitch black in the room aside from the light in the vivarium, and he found himself leaning in to smell her hair once more.
’He’s beautiful’ she breathed, running her fingers along his scales.
’So are you’ Gerard thought, feeling closer to her at this one moment than he had in the last few months. For once his mothers comment that she was a pretty wee thing was an understatement. Elizabeth was a beauty if he had ever seen one, her piercing blue eyes and blonde hair, added to her shapely figure, was taking his breath away. He had first noticed her in the stable as she played with her dog, simply on her knees on the floor. Just an ordinary woman who didn’t mind getting mud on her trousers to show affection, Katy would never have done that. As he watched her place Attila back in the tank his heart thudded, and he felt a tickly feeling in his stomach, he was nervous. How could this be? If Katy had been his one true love, surely he shouldn’t want to know this woman more after one meeting? Should he?
