If I Fall…
A/N: I’m going to be following the tour dates starting After the San Jose Events Center, I know they were in October and November but…yeah…for the purpose of this story they aren’t. And later on down the chapter…it’s not that kind of studio, I think. Also…what I’m going to have them do is something I really do a couple times a week. It’s honestly really good for breathing.
And I know more than one of you must be wondering why an 18 year old is picked as a vocal coach…well….read and find out okies?
Chapter 4: Tough New Regime
~The Next Morning~
The hotel was beautiful, the rooms stunning and the bed Avi was currently occupying in a room all to herself was soft, warm and comfortable. The curtains were drawn tightly against the morning light and the girl herself was snuggled up in the blankets happy as could be.
This is why conjoined hotel rooms should be banned! Or why people should remember that they can LOCK those doors…
“Good morning Miss Wood!” five voices chorused in a cheerful, kind of, way. “This is your wake up CALL!” the word ‘call’ was obviously yelled and was more than enough to rouse the girl from her unconsciousness.
“AH!” She squealed as she sat up and fell off the bed onto her stomach with a thud. “Owies…” She mumbled as the boys behind her but in front of her bed laughed out loud, not only at her fall but also at her choice of pajama’s; pink Strawberry Shortcake pj pants, and an equally pink, equally Strawberry Shortcake, tank top.
Slowly she pushed herself up and off of the ground to turn a very intense glare upon the boys. Yes, the effect was lessened somewhat by the pink pj’s but it was still, none the less, a VERY intense glare. Her hair was sticking up and out in all directions, which was annoying considering it wasn’t exactly short and she looked ready to kill.
“Morning Avi.” They all chorused again, albeit was a bit more timid then there wake up call had been a few minutes ago.
“Morning boys…” she growled out between gritted teeth, she had sensitive breasts and they stung from involuntarily meeting the floor seconds ago, and grabbed a pillow off the bed before charging at them swinging. “OUT! OUT! OUT! OUT! OUT!!!!!” She swung the pillow like a bat with every word, smacking every boy she could until they were all back through the side door they came from. Promptly she locked both of those doors much to her satisfaction and tossed the pillow back on the bed with a smug expression.
“Uh…Avi?” Mikey called, knocking on the side door of his and Gerard’s room hesitantly.
“WHAT?” She was still mad at them for the rude awakening but she’d get them back for it later.
“We’ll meet you in the ball room for breakfast, 8 O’clock okay?”
“Yeah, fine, sure, see you there.” She mumbled back before slamming the bathroom door shut and taking a nice warm shower.
7 am wake up calls were just not fun.

Her hair was still wet when she met the guys at the elevator and gave them another glare. They all whistled innocently and looked anywhere but at her for a few moments before they all, even Avi, cracked smiles. Thus the ride and walk to breakfast was uneventful and quiet until they were all seated at a big round table with there food.
“Okay, so you guys don’t know what to expect from a Vocal Coach right?” They all nodded, after the plane, Avi had been talking with the manager nearly all night and only got to say goodnight to boys before hading off to her room. “Well…you’re just going to have to wait. I WAS going to tell you what to expect from me but you’ll just have to wait until this afternoon when I get to begin doing my job.” She smirked at the pouts and glares.
“Why?” Frank asked after a mouthful of eggs.
“Because of that stunt you all pulled this morning.” She replied, chewing on her pancakes with a tiny glare directed at them all, again.
“Oh…” was the collective answer.
“Anyways, the manager didn’t really explain it to me that well and I’ve been dying to know. I’m only 18, I’ve got no experience actually working with anyone other than people from my voice classes that couldn’t understand the teacher, which was most of us, in fact I’ve only taken a year, albeit I took every voice and music theory class I could. Why me? Out of every single other person that could have possibly applied, why me?” She gave them a pleading look, she really was curious about this.
Everyone glanced at each other for a few moments, unsure of what exactly to say. Yeah, she was only 18, and yeah, she lacked experience that should have mattered greatly to any other band, pop star, etc. And yeah, she had only taken a year but that was beside the point.
“Well…experience and schooling aren’t the only things that matter in a vocal coach you know? We needed someone, not necessarily experience or whatever, but someone who could…” Bob finally began to explain.
“Someone who could keep up with us and our music, someone who we could relate to and who could relate to us. The person responsible for our voices can’t be someone we absolutely hate or it would be a disaster.” Gerard continued for him, giving her a warm smile that nearly melted her heart.
“We went through a lot of applications too.” Mikey took over for his brother. “Of course our manager went through them first, picking out the top 10 she figured would be good choices for us and then she let us choose from there. You happened to make the top ten.” He shrugged.
“Well okay, I get that…but come on guys, the other top 9 had to be better candidates then me!” She gave them a look that clearly said she wanted more of an explanation.
“We checked you out, of course. Talked to your references, talked it over ourselves and we did the same with the other nine. Finally, we came down to you and this other dude who was like 47 and already had a lot of grey hair.” Mikey continued on, seeing as no one else seemed to want to. “What it came down to was, you were young and you were highly accredited by your teachers and past employers. You were someone that could keep up with us, you were someone that knew the kind of music we do and you were the one that came out on top.”
“But wouldn’t the manager-“ She was cut off by Gerard.
“Of course she tried to tell us to pick someone older, someone with more experience but we weren’t going to. So here you are with us, it’s a pretty nice gig don’t you think?” He winked at her and she giggled.
“Okay then, works for me! Anyways boys…finish eating, do whatever it is you do in your hotel rooms and meet me at the studio at 1, oh yeah, wear something you can work out in okies? Okies!” She smiled brightly at them before disappearing out of the door and going back to her room.
The boys watched her go with a slight feeling of dread all around. It was vocal training….why did they need to wear work out clothing?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~’
At about 1:15 in the afternoon, Ray, Bob, Frank, Mikey and Gerard all walked into a studio looking practice room that was pretty much bare. They stood staring around the room for a few moments before Avi brought them out of there confused daze.
“Afternoon boys.” She called from across the room, standing with her back to a mirrored wall in clinging grey track-pants and semi-clinging tank top of the same stormy grey as her pants. Her hair was up in a tight ponytail as she waved to the left of the door. “Grab a mat and spread yourselves out.” She’d already spread out her midnight blue Yoga Mat.
The boys gave her an incredulous look. “What?”
“Grab a mat and spread out, I want at least 3 feet between you and anyone else in ANY direction, including me before you ask.” She ordered again with a smirk at there confusion and sat down on her mat, waiting patiently for them of get set up. “Hurry up now boys, after all, I’m not the one that was late. I definitely remember saying one, not one fifteen.”
The boys gave her sheepish grins before grabbing one black mat each. It took them a few moments to get set up though, mainly because Avi kept telling them that they were too close together and that they needed to move a foot here, 3 inches here, whatever. She was getting them back, but she was also doing her job and she knew that you needed space for this kind of thing. Once they were all spread out and sitting on there map, there oh so young coach finally began the coaching.
“What we are going to be doing whenever I work with you, which, if your manager last night was correct, is going to be a lot, we will do more than sing. I’m not only here to keep your vocal chords in top shape, because singing is more than just vocal. We’re going to work on EVERYTHING boys.” She grinned at them like the Cheshire cat did at Alice. “Like breathing and posture and stamina and technique, starting now. Just watch me and follow what I do to the best of your ability.” With that said, she began her regime of training the voice and all its essential pieces. “That’s right boys…we’re doing Yoga!”
She stood and held her arms out away from her sides, the boys followed. She brought her arms in to a prayer position and the boys followed. She brought her arms behind and then straight up over her head and the boys once more followed. She then brought her arms back to her sides and repeated all the moments several more times with the boys following her every move and giving each other weird looks of WTF.
“Do make sure you keep your breathing nice and rhythmic.” She directed, holding her hands in the prayer position once more and entwining her fingers before holding her clasped hands out at arms length, parallel to her body. After that, she moved into a shoulder stretch with the clasped hands behind instead of in front and having the boys roll there shoulders down every so often
She led the boys into many beginners’ poses, stretching and breathing and balancing. While doing this though, the instructor could not help but stare a little bit at the boy who was front and center, 4 feet in front of her exactly. Gerard had chosen to wear sweatpants, and sweatshirt over a white shirt, but the sweatshirt had been thrown to the side before the workout, and now the shirt had followed. It had been that way with most of the other boys too but Gerard had made her take several subtle breathes when he’d lost the shirt. Finally, the yoga portion was over with and she sat down, cross legged on her mat, directing the boys to do so as well.
“So boys, was that fun?” She asked with that Cheshire grin of hers, glanced at the way Gerard’s Chest expanded and fell with each breath.
“Damn…” Was all Mikey could say
“What he said.” Ray agreed as Frank nodded in agreement.
“Ditto.” Bob nodded to.
“I didn’t think Yoga would be that…”Gerard was at a loss for words.
“Intense or hard?” Avi asked, finishing the sentence for him none the less.
“Definitly both.” He admitted, giving her a small smile.
“I know, when I first started doing it I was sore all the time but it’s a good way to learn how to relax and breathe, and a great way to stay in shape so get used to it.” She grinned and stood again, motioning for the boys to stand as well.
They did so, grumbling all the way.
“Oh shush, come tomorrow you’ll hurt worse than you now, complain then.” She complained right back. “Now then…lets get started on the vocal exorcises shall we?”
The rest of the afternoon, that’s a good 2-3 hours on top of the hour and a half she spent doing Yoga with them, was spent doing vocal and breathing exorsises. She was also taking requests, asking what the guys THOUGHT they needed to work on as a group, and then individually.
Safe to say that dinner that evening was very quiet.
