Chapter 4: Actions have consequences
As Mike drove home that night, a million and one thoughts ran through his mind. What he had done was a terrible and unforgivable thing, how he was going to look Helen in the eye that night he didn’t know. He felt hot tears trickle down his cheeks like a river that had burst its banks, and he let out a cry of anger and self loathing. When he married Helen he had sworn to protect her from the world, he never knew she would need protection from him.
He turned into his driveway and stopped the engine, though he did not get out of the car. He simply sat with his head against the steering wheel sobbing; he didn’t want to go back into the house. He didn’t deserve to be a part of his own family; he’d not only betrayed his wife, but his children as well. Why didn’t he stop? What drove all the thoughts of his family out of his mind? It was then that the realisation hit him like a 16 ton weight…He loved her. That’s why he hadn’t thought of his family, why he’d wanted her so badly that he’d risked his family, his friends and his reputation to be with her. This thought did not cheer him up in the slightest. He’d been married to Helen for 40 years, had three children with her, and in all that time he had never doubted his love for her. That is, until now.
He looked up at the house he’d raised him family in, he’d have to go in sooner or later. The clock on the dashboard read 1:30am, and he knew he’d have to come up with an excuse as to why he was so late home. He’d say that he went back to Terry G’s house for a bit; she wouldn’t question that, though he’d have to let Terry know so that he could keep up the pretence. He also knew he’d have to talk to Sarah and some point, she’d looked extremely hurt at his abrupt departure so soon after, he realised he hadn’t even said goodbye.
Sighing heavily, he got out of the car and walked towards his front door. Before he let himself in, he took several deep breathes and wiped his eyes, he knew they were still bloodshot but he’d just say he was tired. When he entered the house he immediately knew that Helen was asleep. Being careful not to make a sound, he tiptoed up to the bedroom and began to undress. Helen stirred and Mike froze.
“M-Mike its half 1 in the morning, why are you back so late?” She murmured sleepily, sitting up and turning the bedside lamp on.
“O-Oh, erm, Gilly invited me back to his hotel room.” He replied shakily, cursing himself for not sounding more convincing. “And you know how he never takes no for answer.”
“Uh huh, right well, I shall be having words with him.” She smiled sleepily.
Mike smiled nervous back at his wife, she seemed to believe him. He watched her long after she’d gone back to sleep, it didn’t feel right for him to share the bed with her. He didn’t deserve to, not after what he’d just done. Holding back a fresh wave of tears, he got into his pyjamas and made his way noiselessly down the stairs to the living room. He found himself a couple of blankets in the cupboard and arranged a bed on the sofa. Obviously Helen would ask him why he hadn’t sleep in bed, so he’d just say he smelt of beer and that he didn’t want to disturb her.
As he tried to sleep, he let his mind wander to Terry J. He’d been so caught up in his betrayal for Helen; he hadn’t given Terry a thought at all. He knew he’d betrayed Terry just as much as Helen; he was his best friend and had been since they were teenagers. Terry trusted him beyond anyone he’d ever known, and here was Michael throwing his trust back at him. Soft tears trickled their way from his eyes and onto the pillow, and he didn’t even bother to wipe them away.
He was in love with another woman; he’d betrayed his wife and his best friend. He didn’t deserve any of them, and most of all, he didn’t deserve her.

It wasn’t until the crack of dawn that Mike finally fell asleep, and even then he was plagued with thoughts about what would happen if Terry and Helen found out about what he’d done. He was rudely woken at 10am by his wife, he looked positively livid, and Mike braced himself for the onslaught.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” She hissed, pulling the sheets from Mike suddenly exposing him to the freezing air around him. “Why didn’t you come to bed last night?”
Mike sat up and rubbed his eyes, a burning headache threatened to split his head in two.
“I-I’m sorry dear, it’s just I didn’t want to disturb you.” He replied feebly, knowing that she wouldn’t believe a word.
“You already had! You’re noisy return last night woke me up!” She spat, folding the sheets up furiously only to throw them on the floor. “You’ve been behaving very odd these past couple of days, and now you won’t even share the same bed as me! Have I done something to upset you?”
“N-No! Of course you haven’t sweetheart! I’ve just, not been myself.” He said so quietly that Helen could barely hear him. “I think I’m coming down with something.” He added, knowing this would have absolutely no effect on her whatsoever.
Exhaling noisily, Helen picked up the sheets and strode angrily into the kitchen. He thought of going after her, but then again he knew not to disturb her when she was in a bad mood, 40 years of marriage had told him that. Sighing depressively, he got up and made his way up the stairs to get dressed. As he pulled on his trousers and shirt, he knew that he had to talk to Sarah today. He’d tell Helen he was going to say goodbye to Eric before he went back to w:st="on">America, which he needed to do today anyway. He had to sort this out, even if it meant hurting the woman he cared about and loved so much.

As Mike pulled up outside Terry J’s house, he knew immediately that something was going on. The front door was open, and there were two large suitcases by Sarah’s car which had its boot open. He felt a squirming sensation in his stomach; he could only guess that Sarah was leaving. He got slowly out of the car, just as Terry J ran out of the front door holding yet another suitcase and throwing it to the floor beside the others. When Terry spotted Mike, he smiled broadly and ran over to him, extremely out of breath.
“Come to give us a hand have you?” He panted, slapping Mike heartily on the back. “Typical Sarah decided at 7 o’clock this morning that she wanted to go and visit Billy in Scotland.” He smiled fondly.
“S-She’s going to Scotland?” He asked, ever inch of him aching with heartache. “But she’s only just got back!”
Terry shrugged. “That’s our Sarah, does like to do things on the spot.” He said, steering Mike towards the house. “Though she did seem extremely quiet, I’m wondering whether something’s happened.”
“You have no idea.” Mike thought hopelessly.
When he entered the house, he saw yet another suitcase lying on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. Terry moaned.
“How many clothes can one woman have?!” He said shrilly, heaving the suitcase up and walking out of the house to dump it with the rest.
Mike wandered into the living room and found Sarah in there packing a small backpack, with most of the stuff scattered about the sofa. When she heard his footsteps, she looked up and a funny expression crossed her face, one that Mike couldn’t read. He stepped towards her, hoping for a greeting, but none came. He’s thought he’d better start some sort of conversation.
“Y-Your Dad tells me you’re off to Scotland.” He said feebly, feeling the heartache rise in his chest.
“Yep,” she replied shortly. “I can’t stay here forever now can I?”
“I suppose not.” She said, walking towards the sofa and setting himself down beside Sarah’s backpack. “Look, we need to talk -”
“No we don’t.” She cut across him, taking him by surprise.
Mike stood up and took her by the arm, dragging her out into the garden amidst fierce protests. Once they were out in the sunlight garden, Mike turned to face Sarah, surprised to find her eyes waterlogged with tears.
“I’m so sorry.” She choked, taking Mike’s hand and bringing it up to her cheek. “I didn’t mean for last night to happen; I don’t know what came over me. I mean…I’ve been feeling stuff for you for a long time, but I never acted on it, you’re my Dad’s best friend and you’re married.”
“It wasn’t just you!” He assured her, though still slightly shocked at her admittance that she’d liked him for a long time. “I shouldn’t have acted on my feelings, but I just couldn’t stop myself. Ever since I saw you at the reunion the other day, you’ve been on my mind constantly. I saw you face when I closed me eyes and thought of you ever moment of the day.”
Sarah suddenly burst into tears, and Mike pulled her close to his chest.
“I just n-need to get away, think things through.” She sobbed, clutching at his jacket. “I also don’t want to ruin you life.” She looked up at his shining brown eyes. “And I need to try and stop loving you.”
Mike suddenly felt as if he’d been winded. He never thought in a million years that she’d return the feelings he held for her. For a moment he simply stared at her, stroking her soft cheeks gently with his finger. Then he took the plunge, knowing that what he said next would change everything.
“I’ve been trying to deny it for days, but now I feel I have to say it.” He said, slightly breathless. “I-I love you, so much. I know I shouldn’t, but I do, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
There was a moment of silence, in which they simply stared at each other. They both knew that what they felt for each other was wrong, that it would hurt everyone they held dear, and would ruin so many lives. They had to stop now, before they got in too deep. Trouble was they already had.
“I have to go Mike, clear my head.” She said, pulling herself away from Mike and wiping her eyes. “You’ll do better here without me, you can work things out with Helen, it’s best for everyone.”
“I don’t know whether I can live a lie.” He said, reaching out and pushing a stray strand of hair from her eyes. “I don’t know whether I can force myself to fall in love with Helen again and out of love with you just because it’s right.”
“The right thing to do isn’t always the easiest, but it has to be done.” She said quietly. “I’ll say goodbye Mike.” She added leaning in to place a tender kiss on his lips.
When they parted, Mike felt tears of his own trickle down his cheeks.
“I love you.” She whispered.
“I love you too.” He answered in the same solemn tone.
He watched her walk away from him and enter the house. He however did not follow; he just stood there, his knees threatening to give way beneath him. He couldn’t believe he’d let his head rule his heart yet again, that he’d let her walk away for him. She was worth fighting for, and he’d never told her that. Wiping his eyes roughly with his sleeve, and taking a deep breath he walked towards the house, all his will power spent on trying to compose himself. He found Alison in the living room, mindlessly rearranging the cushions.
“Ah there you are Mike, we thought you’d disappeared!” She smiled, though a little look of concern spread across her face at the sight of his bloodshot eyes. “Are you alright?”
“Y-Yes I’m fine. I just haven’t been feeling too well lately, I think old age is catching up with me.” He replied, in what he hoped was a casual, offhand voice.
At that moment, Terry strode into the living room. He looked disheartened at the sudden departure of his eldest, but as usual, he covered it up well.
“You’ve found him then Alison!” He laughed heartily. “Fancy a brandy?” He asked, making his way towards the drinks cabinet.
“You’ve never offered anything better my friend.” He replied gratefully.
