I didn’t know how long I’d been walking. I didn’t even know where I was. Not that I honestly cared. I needed to find somewhere that I could breath again. Every word that had left Ryan’s mouth pressed down heavily on my chest until it felt like my ribs were cracking under the pressure. So I just kept walking until the sun dipped low into the summer sky.
I was surrounded by houses and roads that had seen better days. There were rusted pick up trucks and out dated cars parked on overgrown lawns, brown and dead around the wheels. The paint on the houses were dulled from sun rays and rain drops, but I could tell they’d once been beauties. I envied the people that lived in those quaint little houses. Children played in houses like that. Home cooked meals were eaten in houses like that. People actually lived, and loved, and died in houses like that, so unlike the stiff and cold mausoleum I called home.
My eyes settled on a swing set in front of a baseball field a few yards ahead of me, and I smiled to myself, before picking up my pace. It’d been so long since I’d just sat and swung.
I gently traced the rusted metal chain holding the black rubber seat in place before taking a seat. Staring off into the setting sun, I let the smile break free. I pumped my bare legs back and forth leisurely as I started to move. Soon enough I was swinging high, intoxicated by the rushing air.
I laughed. It was the first real laugh that had left my throat is what seemed like forever. It was like tasting freedom, and the higher I went, the sweeter it become. This was where I wanted to stay forever but reality was glaring at me from the sidelines. Soon I would have to slow and head on home like the good girl I was.
Pursing my lips in concentration, I braced myself for the jump. The anticipation was always the worst for me. I could either land smoothly, or more likely, I could be launching myself towards a broken limb. But, I always jumped.
And hit the land with a painful thud.
“I give her a 6.5. How about you Gerard?”
“A little sloppy on the landing if you ask me.”
I squeezed my eyes shut at the familiar voices, listening to the chorus of slightly sarcastic laughter. This was the last thing I needed right now.
I stood up shakily and glared something fierce at the group of boys. “Oh come on. The effort was there.”
“Hi Lainee,” Mikey said timidly, half smiling at me.
I couldn’t help but smile back at the boy who’d been my lab partner for most of last year, “Hey.”
“Get into it with Ryan again huh?” Frank cut in, his words clipped.
I ground my teeth in frustration. “Why do you care so much what goes on between Ryan and me?”
Ray opened his mouth to speak but was instantly silenced by a sneer from Frank. “I just happen to find you being so head over heels for him when he’s such an asshole to be amusing.”
Gerard snorted loudly, earning the same look that Ray had.
“You know what?” I sighed. “I’m seriously not in the mood for this right now.” Wrapping my arms around myself, I started to walk away.
Gerard grabbed my shoulder, causing me to flinch. “Come on sugar, stay and have a drink with us.”
Bob held up a bottle invitingly and I bit my lip. Was it so wrong I was tempted to stay? I stared at them all for a second before nodding. “Alright.”
I knew this wasn’t going to end well. This was a toxic mixture in every way imaginable. Alcohol, people who despised me, and a boy I wanted to touch so badly my hands clenched into tight fists in order to keep them in control. As he stood there smirking at me in the same way he’d been doing for years I honestly didn’t know if I wanted to hit him or kiss. Or both.
“So why are you guys being so nice to me?” I eyed the five boys with mock caution. “Planning a drunken gang rape or something?”
I tensed when Gerard ran his eyes up and down my body. Frank rolled his eyes. “In your dreams sweetheart.”
“Oh yes, you caught me. Please oh please make my twisted fantasies come true.” I snorted loudly as I let my body fall back into the soft sand.
“Maybe next time,” Gerard winked with a leer. I probably should have felt violated by his gaze instead of slightly flattered.
Blushing faintly, I looked away, “So is this like your guy’s hang out or something? Kind of lame.”
“Do you always ask so many questions?” Frank asked, his voice filled with irritation. Irritation that kind of turned me on. We would be so explosive if we ever…
I couldn’t let myself finish my thought. Everything about it was wrong.
I shrugged silently before Mikey said, “Yes.”
When I flashed him a questioning look, he elaborated quietly. “In class last year, you always had a million questions to ask about whatever we were doing.”
“Oh yeah.” I said as a slow smile took over my lips, “I guess so.”
There was something comforting about the quiet boy. Like you wanted to give him a great big bear hug and pinch his cheeks.
God, how awkward would that be. It was hard to remember I was still supposed to hate the boys in front of me. And they hated me. Mustn’t forget that little fact now Lainee. Hate is good. Hate is easy. Go with hate.
There was a moment of uncomfortable silence before I turned to Frank and blurted out the million dollar question. “Why do you hate me so much?”
My question caused Ray to choke slightly, his mouth on a bottle of an unidentified alcohol. When he composed himself, he half smiled and reached down to hand me the bottle. I stared at the brown tinted glass, unsure. I didn’t drink.
“Scared?” Frank smirked at me, his eyes completely unreadable.
I glared defiantly at him before lifting the bottle to my lips and taking a large swing without another thought. The amber liquid burned all the way down my throat, throwing me into a coughing fit. Finally when my hacking subsided, I looked at the boys with wide eyes. “And people ask me why I don’t drink!”
Gerard plopped down next to me on the ground, and patted my back in a patronizing manner. He took the bottle with a large smile and warning. “Pace yourself doll.”
My eyes narrowed at him as I snatched the bottle back from his hands. I turned and stared directly at Frank as I took my second drink. This time I was ready for the burning liquor.
I’d be damned if I let them mock me tonight.
---
It was the alcohol swimming through my blood stream that made me do it. That had to be it. Really there was no other reasonable explanation. At least the only reasonable explanation I would let myself come to.
Denial, thy name is Lainee.
“Frank,” I slurred, swaying in my seat on the bleachers slightly.
He smiled at me, amused at my clear drunkenness. “Yes?”
I leaned in and planted my lips on his, nearly missing. I couldn’t think, I could only act. Our lips clashed almost violently, sucking and nipping. There was only the briefest moment of hesitation on his part before a hand snaked it’s way into my hair, pulling my closer. Soon his lips abandoned mine as I gasped for air. They found their way to my neck. I moaned loudly as he sunk his blunt teeth into the sensitive skin.
I pulled back with a dazed expression which made him emit a low whine of protest. He wanted me as bad as I wanted him. I had the power, if only for the moment. I smirked sloppily, trying to imitate him. “Thas fer the utter night.”
Standing up on unsteady legs, I slowly started to climb off the bleachers, leaving him there with a confused expression on his face.
“Lainee, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!”
My head shot up and I lost my balance. But Ryan was there to catch me around the waist, carefully setting me on the ground. My Ryan was always there to catch me before I fell.
I snuggled my face into his chest and mumbled, “I’s just havin a drink.”
His voice was scolding, making me giggle lightly. “Your mom called my house wanting to know where you were and I told her you fell asleep. You’re lucky I saved your ass.”
I giggled again, snuggling my face deeper. He smelled so good. “Shank you. Les go back tuh yer house.”
He pulled away from me, making me sigh in protest, before taking my hand. “Took me forever to find you. It scared the shit out of me.”
Smiling drunkenly, I let him lead me to his car.
