Chapter Four- The Unexplainable
“Okay, love. Shhhh.” Viggo kissed Orlando’s head as he carried the younger man over to the couch. He sat his lover down and pulled off his sleep pants. Gentle hands caressed the shaking limbs, looking for harm or injury, but found nothing. No red marks, no scratches or bruises, nothing.
“There’s nothing there, angel. It was just a nightmare.” Viggo pulled Orlando’s hands to his face to kiss them when he saw blood once again. Curiously, he turned Orlando’s hands palm up and saw the drying blood. He gently prod them and watched as fresh blood seeped out and dribbled down his wrists. “Let’s get those cleaned, okay?”
As he was walking to the bathroom, a knock came at the door before it quickly opened. Viggo barely stepped back in time to avoid it whacking into him as Johnny stepped through. He looked at Viggo, then around the room before his eyes wandered back to the other man.
“Is Orlando okay? I was coming up from the pool when I heard him scream.” He explained as he quickly shut the door behind him and followed Viggo into the bathroom.
“Yeah, he just had a nightmare I think. Thought something was attacking him. He’s fine.” Viggo pulled out antiseptic, bandages, and a few clean clothes out of the drawer.
“Then what’s with the bandages and stuff? What happened?”
Viggo turned and met Johnny’s worried gaze before he sighed. “He dug his fingernails into his palms and cut them. They aren’t too bad, I just want to clean them up to be sure.” Viggo ran a hand through his hair and closed his eyes for a moment, vividly recalling the blood on the sheets and the wild, terrified look in his lover’s gaze.
“He was really freaked out, but I think he’ll be fine. Just needs to eat and rest a little bit more.” Viggo gathered up the supplies and flicked off the light as he made his way back to the couch. Orlando was still sitting there with his palms turned up, blood trailing down his arms, eyes fixed on the wall in front of him. He didn’t move until Viggo was sitting back down in front of him and the couch next to him dipped down under someone else’s weight.
“Look who I found.” Viggo smiled as he pulled one of Orlando’s hands to him and began cleaning away all the blood. Orlando didn’t make a sound, just slowly turned his head to look at Johnny. The older man flashed him a disarming smile, but Orlando just leaned back into the couch.
Silence ensued then for a while as Viggo cleaned each of his lover’s hands and bandaged them up. Once that was done, he sat down next to Orlando and pulled his lover close, cradling his head against his chest. “Close your eyes for a little bit love, I’ll be right here and you need the rest.”
Orlando didn’t protest as his eyes were already slipping closed. It took a few minutes to get comfortable, but once he was lying with his head in Viggo’s lap and his feet across Johnny’s, sleep rushed up to meet him. And for the second time since his lover’s arrival, his nap on the couch was undisturbed.
Once it was apparent that Orlando was asleep, Viggo relaxed a little more, leaning back into the couch. He cast a look over at Johnny. The other man had his body turned so he was facing Viggo, but his eyes were locked upon Orlando’s sleeping face. Feeling the gaze upon him, Johnny looked up and gave Viggo a half smile.
“It’s the first time he’s looked at peace since we started filming,” he offered as explanation. He picked up the discarded blanket from off the floor and pulled it over Orlando’s nearly naked body. His body was still muscular but the kid was definitely thinner than the last time Johnny had seen him. And it didn’t surprise him either, considering the rough schedule and strict exercise plan Orlando stuck to religiously. “He’s thinner, older, and just completely different from the other Orlando.”
Viggo nodded as he stroked the dark locks. The roots were damp with sweat making them curl closer to his skull. For a few moments, he was captured by the relaxed face and its beauty, then snapped back to reality. “How has he really been, Johnny? Tell me the truth. He says he’s fine, but he’s obviously not.”
Johnny seemed to think about it for a moment or two, trying to gather his thoughts completely before his spoke. “Well, he seemed fine the first few weeks. He was the same Orlando everyone remembered and loved. Going surfing, laughing and joking, going to the bars with us. He was fine.
“But a few weeks ago he started to seem unhappy. He barely slept and got pissed off quickly. He was just a mess . . .”
Johnny watched as Orlando slumped down on the deck of the ship and closed his eyes against the fading sun. He had missed yet another mark, his fourth for this scene. The sun was beginning to set and they only had one more chance to shoot this scene before they would have to break for the day.
He walked over to where the kid was sitting and sat down as well, mimicking Orlando’s position before offering him a water bottle. Orlando just shook his head no before turning his gaze back to the water. His eyes slid closed and his head started to nod forward before he caught himself and sat upright once again.
“You okay, kid? You’re looking a little rough around the edges today.” Johnny tried to keep his voice light and free of concern, but it was near impossible as he watched Orlando practically fall asleep where he was sitting.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a little tired. Rough day and all.” Orlando whispered as he stretched his sore muscles. Sword fighting, running back and forth across the deck, climbing the rigging, it was all becoming old, fast.
“Come over to my room tonight. I’m ordering special room service and a good bottle of wine. I’d love the company.” He hoped his offer wouldn’t be refused, but judging by the small frown starting to wrinkle up Orlando’s brow, Johnny knew his wish wouldn’t be granted.
“Nah. I had a big lunch today. I just wanna go crash tonight. Maybe another night?” Orlando made to stand up but Johnny grabbed his arm and pulled him back down. His face was stern as he turned to the older man, ready to yell. Johnny, however, was faster as squeezed Orlando’s arm and quickly explained.
“But you didn’t eat lunch, not that I’ve seen at least. You went to practice lines. I watched you!”
“So you’re babysitting me now, is that it?! Who said I need someone to watch over me!”
Orlando jumped up from his seat and started to walk away when he swayed. He clutched onto the railing and tried to focus his swimming vision. Almost immediately, he felt Johnny’s hands on his shoulders, steadying him and pulling him close.
“Easy there, lad. I think you should go to your room. We can pick up the scene tomorrow. You obviously need to rest and go over the scene again.” Johnny cringed as the words left his mouth. He knew he had definitely said the wrong thing when he felt the younger man’s shoulders tense up under his hands.
“What! I’m sorry if I’m up to par with the great and amazing Johnny Depp! But I’m trying, okay? I’m tired and bloody sick of everyone trying to help! Just leave me alone.” The last sentence was nearly hissed as Orlando tore free of Johnny’s grip and started to stalk towards the stairs that would take him back to the ground.
“Wait! Orlando, I’m sorry, okay? I’m just worried about you. We all are.” Johnny caught up with the younger man at the bottom of the stairs. He once again grabbed his arm, wheeling the younger man around so they were face to face. “But you can’t deny that you haven’t been yourself. Skipping meals, not sleeping, missing marks like crazy. You need to take a break, even if only for a day. And start taking care of yourself! Please.”
Johnny all but pleaded with the younger man, hoping he would forget this madness and come back to reason. For a moment, Orlando said nothing, just stared at Johnny with a blank expression on his face, but his eyes were swimming with a storm of emotions. When he finally did speak, it wasn’t what Johnny wanted to hear.
“Fuck off, Johnny.” Orlando whispered. He pulled away from the stunned older man and stalked off, leaving the set.
Johnny sighed as he finished telling Viggo the story of the most recent explosion of temper. And the odd thing was that it had happened yesterday. The kid had gone to the beach after storming off set, ignoring the bad weather. Now, it was up to Viggo to straighten his errant lover out.
“Well, I’ve gotta got and look over the script. Jerry’s decided to pick up filming tomorrow on account of the storm passing by us.” He shrugged as he started to remove Orlando’s feet from his lap. As he set them back down on the couch, however, he noticed something that he hadn’t seen before. A bruise on the kid’s foot.
Viggo saw the confusion cross over Johnny’s face and looked down to see what had startled the man so. There were two identical bruises running across the tops of Orlando’s feet, as if something had wrapped around them. He swallowed thickly and looked up to meet Johnny’s gaze.
“Not a word,” he mumbled. If Orlando saw them, he would definitely freak out again. And they could have been from anything, especially after last night. But as he looked down at them again, he couldn’t help the shiver that scuttled up his spine. Something just wasn’t right.
