Author's Note: Well, here comes the long expected (by Rho) chapter 4 of My Asrun Star. So we have more interaction between Gackt and Vitas, and the premise where their relationship really begins. As always, I love comments so give them abundantly. ^_^
Chapter 4: U+K
“Can I at least talk to him?” Nadia was pleading of the group as they made their way through the park, planning to have a night together in celebration of another successful performance. It was a rather easy shot – most of the fans had been diverted to another exit, while the performers were given another route. The few fans that had made their way to their area were kept at bay by security, but occasionally the Russian male would cast them a bright, gracious smile that sent them reeling.
“If you can even find him,” Alek replied with an aer of disinterest and he plowed on, not really caring about where they were going and what they were doing so long as they were out of the park soon.
Vitas couldn’t have disagreed with Alek’s logic, but he wouldn’t have minded having a word with the mysterious Japanese singer, assuming this was the last time he would be given the opportunity. The whole time the Asian had been on the stage, giving his voice to the screaming crowd, the Russian had been unable to tear his eyes from him. There was such skill and such beauty in his voice that a deep respect rose in him for the other. If the two could have talked but for a little while…
“There he is!” Nadia exclaimed suddenly, and the female rushed ahead to where the Japanese male was walking slowly, without purpose.
“Ah, it’s the Russians,” he mused with a thoughtful expression, meeting them at their language and smiling, bemused.
“You were incredible,” Nadia answered quickly, her dark eyes surveying the male as though she was reading him, taking in every shape of his body.
Gackt nodded to her but didn’t seem too interested in what she thought. Instead his eyes were locked on Vitas, who had yet to say anything. The Russian seemed fully aware of the eyes on him, and he tried to ignore it for a moment or two before finally looking up to meet the eyes directly.
“I’m impressed,” he forced himself to say finally, and the Japanese male’s smile grew. He was clearly enjoying the situation, including the Russian’s discomfort. “Where did you study?”
“Who says I studied? Maybe I was just born that good.” The Asian laughed lightly and joined the group of Russians in their steady gait to their waiting limousine.
“I sincerely doubt that,” Anya said with a snort, coming up beside the Asian and eyeing him with the same kind of intentionality as Nadia was. Now that the male was flanked on either side by the Russian females he allowed himself to slip into his ‘celebrity persona’ and slipped an arm around both girls’ shoulders. “Although…I can think of another beautiful thing that you must have been born with.”
Both girls laughed lightly and exchanged knowing glances, their eyes speaking volumes about what was on their minds. Vitas rolled his eyes at the childishness of his companions and followed several paces back, trying not to think too much about the presence of their new companion. It was strange to him that he was suddenly very awkward about speaking to the musician. Perhaps it was the deep respect he felt for his talent that kept him from being too outlandish. Whatever the reason, his awkwardness was showing outwardly, but he didn’t know quite how to overcome it.
“I’d be curious to know what you ladies are talking about,” the male pressed as he pulled them closer to him, the sly smile not leaving his pale face.
A chorus of giggles filled the air in response to Gackt’s question, and Nadia hid her face from view while Anya slipped her arm around the Asian’s slender waist. “Well, I’ll just say that there are some very amusing pictures of you online.”
I can’t believe they’re talking about this, Vitas thought absently as they finally escaped the tree cover, the evening starlight breaking through the leaves as they steadily thinned, proving that they were close to their destination. Increasing his gate, the male came around them on the right, trying to direct any attention to himself. “Well, we were planning on going out to eat, but if you’d like to join us -”
“I thought I was,” the Asian replied as he stepped out into the moonlight, casting his companion a cocky look and nodding absently at him. “But now that its an open invitation, I think I will.”
He’s incredible, Vitas pondered silently, and shook his head once more, trying not to look too irritated. “Whatever.”
As they broke through the trees, four limousines could be seen lined up in a row along the drive that lead into the park. The third one Vitas recognized as the one he had taken to the park that morning (or rather, he recognized its driver). Hard to believe he had already been there for over 16 hours now. “Where are we going, anyone?” he posed to no one in particular as he approached his limousine and leaned against the side in a leisurely manner.
The Japanese male pulled away from the females he had been clinging to and joined Vitas by the limousine, standing across from him with his arms folded across his chest. “If no one has any preference, I know a great place in Shibuya. It’s a bit of a drive, but its worth it.”
No one said anything, until finally Alek shrugged. “I don’t care. No one else seems to care. C’mon, get in.” Then the keyboardist made his way to the first limo followed by most of the male instrumentalists. They split up and filled the first two limos while the girls made eyes at the last one.
“Would you like to ride with us? There’s room,” Nadia pressed, gesturing to the final limousine as the two other females found their way inside. Her eyes seemed to press the male to follow her, but when he shook his head firmly it changed suddenly to crestfallen.
“Nah, four’s a crowd. Besides, you’ll get lonely all by yourself, won’t you?” The statement was directed at Vitas and he paled slightly when he realized he was being addressed by the talented Japanese male.
Shaking his head, he glanced back at Nadia. “I often travel alone.”
“Eh, well, we need to talk anyway,” Gackt responded simply, and without waiting for an open invitation, he crawled into the limousine, leaving Vitas and Nadia alone.
The dark female’s eyes watched him silently and he shook his head, looking slightly awestruck. However her thoughts didn’t seem to be on the Japanese male so much for the expression on her face was one of compassion and sensitivity. “Are you going to be okay, V?”
“Yeah,” he answered, forcing the same smile he staged for his performances. The female didn’t seem fooled by the farce so his smile quickly faded and he nodded. “Yes, Nadia. As okay as I’m going to be…considering.”
If it were possible, her expression deepened, but within her eyes was a kind, gentle smile that told him I’m here if you need me. It was all he really needed from her. To know that she was there for him gave him the strength to force a true smile. It was met with a true smile on her own part, and she nodded to him in recognition before disappearing into her own limousine.
As Vitas found his way into the back seat, closing the door behind him, the slender Asian had gone about making himself at home. The window was open a sliver, and occasionally he would flick some ashes from a smoldering cigarette in his right hand. Bright blue eyes (obviously contacts) bore into his face, giving him little chance to breathe. It made him uncomfortable, but he didn’t press the issue.
“What was that about?”
Hazel eyes locked with Prussian blue and mingled for a moment only before he took his seat across from the Asian, his obvious discomfort putting more than distance between them. His comfort with Nadia was quite the juxtaposition against his discomfort with the Japanese musician, and no reason for him to speak openly about his thoughts. “You wanted to talk to me about something?”
Gackt got the point quickly and sat back, crossing his legs and running a free hand through his flaming red hair. “Okay, I picked that one up. We’ll talk about something else.” He took a long drag of the cigarette in his lips, and the glowing embers seemed to fill the small limo with a hot, red light. It played on both their features like a candle in the darkness, revealing the strange likenesses that had been thrust together through circumstance.
It was in this light that Vitas was able to make out the softness of his companion’s face. His slender jaw was smooth and effeminate, though not so much that a female would not find him attractive. On the contrary, as Nadia and Anya had proven that to be much the opposite. His nose was small but not so much that it disrupted his features, and his almond eyes were slanted just so that he seemed to ever have a thought about him.
Similarly, Gackt took in his companions distinctly European features with a silent, observant aer. The Russian had an elongated face and more pronounced cheekbones, but what struck Gackt most about his appearance was his mouth – in one instant he could smile from the depths of his being with a kind of childish nature, and yet in this moment it was formless, empty, and sad.
“I did want to talk to you,” Gackt spoke finally, his eyes turning from the Russian to the window, and he exhaled slowly, allowing the smoke to leave his lungs, filling the small limousine cabin. “I’m sure you’re aware that this concert was, in part, my idea.”
No, actually, Vitas considered, but he simply nodded his head.
“It was a plan of mine to expose my people with great talents from around the world. A simple dream for a musician like myself.” His tone had changed completely from when they had been interacting with his band, and Vitas was struck by how serious he now seemed without an audience. It was almost like he became a different person.
“Not so simple…music is international,” the Russian replied softly, for once opening up to the other and seeming slightly more comfortable. “I wouldn’t mind having a similar show put on in Russia.”
A smile crossed Gackt’s porcelain features and for a moment he seemed to be amusing himself in his own thoughts. “Its funny you should mention that, because I’ve been thinking…”
“Always a good sign,” Vitas replied quickly, and when the statement caught Gackt’s ear, his blue eyes flickered to attention, and a small laugh broke his otherwise apathetic expression.
“Nice one. For a while I thought you couldn’t even smile if it wasn’t a performance.”
The statement hurt, but Vitas didn’t let it get to him and instead a smile broke through his features. “Well, even I can joke once in a while. I just have to get used to you first.”
Gackt nodded and flicked the last of his cigarette out the window, then closed it, leaving the two in a secluded silence. “But what I was thinking about…” He leaned forward so that he was closer to his companion and lowered his voice as though what he had to say was a great secret. “What would you think about doing this?”
There was a pause, and it was clear Vitas was perplexed. “Doing what?”
“This,” the Japanese male stressed, looking excited. When all he got in response was a blank stare, he sighed deeply and rubbed his temples. “This tour. This concert. All over the world.”
It only took a split second for the perplexed look to morph into one of curious interest. “I think it’d be great.” And for the second time that evening, he was truly smiling. The second time he hadn’t force himself to do so. “I can’t promise I can do it for at least another six months – that you’ll have to take up with my management. But I think we can work something out.”
His companion smiled brightly, looking rather like he was plotting something malicious, but if anything it was his way of expression his sheer joy. “Good. I was hoping you would think so. If you agree, it will be that much easier to convince our management to do it.” Vitas nodded to show his support, and it was perhaps the easiest moment between the two. “I’ve already spoken to Ayumi, Hyde, Show, SES, and they’re all in agreement. And I’m sure you can give us an in with some other Russian artists.”
“I think I could do that,” he replied as he turned his thoughts inwardly to the proposal. He was positive his schedule was booked solid for the next few months for his European tour, but being showcased with a collection of artists in an international context would give him an in for countries he wasn’t so well known in. He could aid his fellow musicians, they could aid him. “It would be great for promoting one another. Use the artists from the given country as the frontliners, and then…expose the rest.”
Gackt winked and a strange expression crossed his face. “Exactly my thoughts.” He laced his fingers together in his best attempt at being sinister and locked eyes on the man across from him. “You see, even now our minds have become as one.”
The comment earned a chuckle of amusement. “Apparently.”
The pair reverted to silence as the conversation lulled, but it was obvious that they had grown more comfortable together, and for that both were grateful. But as the limousine began to slow, signaling the end of their journey together. Neither moved, but they watched one another as though curious what to say. Finally Gackt spoke, breaking the silence with his musical voice. “I wanted to tell you…you’re very good.”
Though he wasn’t specific, the Russian knew what his companion was saying and he nodded in thanks. “So are you.”
“I look forward to working with you.” And with that, the Asian got up and stepped out of the vehicle, meeting the gaggle of girls from the other car.
AN: thanks for reading. sorry this one sucked, but it was necessary to carry the plot forward. r&r!
