CHAPTER 4
‘Wake up, my dear boy,’ came a warm breath next to his ear. Mikey opened his eyes and made to sit but found that he couldn’t. His arms and legs had been tied to the bed he was lying on. He tried in vain to free himself from the ropes. He was breathing heavily, cold sweat dripping from his forehead to his face.
‘Uhm, salty,’ Lauren said, licking his cheek and savouring him. Her fangs contrasted with her crimson lips.
‘Let me go!’ Mikey cried with all his might. He was still shocked by what he had seen. Vampires. How could that be? How could his own brother be a vampire? How could he be so blind not to have realized about it?
‘Now, now, my little boy. What are you so upset about? Don’t tell me you never thought about this. Don’t tell me your being tied up doesn’t turn you on. You must have your wild side. I mean, I suppose it comes in the blood,’ she said, grinning and looking at Gerard, who was standing a few steps from the bed.
‘Gerard! What is this all about?’ Mikey asked, his voice cracking.
‘I think you know my dear brother. After all, aren’t you a brain yourself? You must have realized by now,’ he added with a sick, twisted grin.
‘You see, when you are turned into a vampire you get very hungry, your thirst for blood is unbearable,’ Frank said, coming out of the shadows behind Lauren. ‘We were about to take Lauren for her first haunting night but then there were you, so willingly waiting to be bitten.’
‘What? No, it’s a mistake! I was just passing by... I didn’t mean to...’ Mikey panicked.
‘Don’t worry, sweetie, it only hurts for a minute.’ Lauren bent on Mikey and sunk her fangs into his skin, making him howl in pain and desperation. His blood was warm and full of life, a life she was taking away from him. Tears fell hard from his eyes, not caused by the physical pain she was inflicting him, but for the thought of leaving Evelyn. Images of her rushed in front of his eyes, tangling themselves with the horrific scene in which he was immersed. He saw Evelyn’s eyes shining under the sun of that April day when they had first kissed; Gerard and Frank laughing, watching Lauren feeding herself, hungry stares of lust; Evelyn’s laugh and her black hair tickling his face; Lauren’s form, positioning herself on top of him, sucking in harder; Evelyn’s face saying “I love you” the night they first made love.
Evelyn hung up the phone in frustration for the fifth time in twenty minutes. She had been trying to phone Mikey all day to arrange the details for that night. She was growing worried and decided to try one last time before going to his house.
‘Hello,’ a barely audible voice answered.
‘Mikey, is that you?’
‘Y-yes, it’s me. Who is this?’
‘What do you mean who is this? It’s me, you silly thing. Evelyn.’
‘Oh, Eve. Sorry, I didn’t recognize you,’ he croaked.
‘Mikey, are you ok? You sound weird.’
‘I’m ok. I just didn’t have a good night. I had nigtmares that kept waking me up.’
‘Aw, my poor baby. Don’t worry about that. In a few hours we’ll be together, right?’
‘Yes.’
‘Ok. So, shall I go in an hour, as we had agreed?’
‘Yes. I’ll be waiting for you.’
‘Great. I love you, Mikey.’
‘I love you too.’
Evelyn had been knocking on the door and ringing the bell for fifteen minutes already. How could it be that he didn’t hear all the noise? The house was quiet. She tried his bedroom window but it was locked and the curtains drawned. ‘Fuck,’ she muttered. She tried phoning, but nobody answered. How could he had done something like this to her? Something wasn’t right. She tried with his cell phone but had no answer whatsoever. After leaving messages both in the answer machine and in the door, Evelyn decided it would be best to go home. She was crushed. She lied on her bed and cried her heart out until she fell asleep.
A tap on her window woke her up. She glanced at the clock. 5:30. Another tap. She went to the window and let out a gasp at what she saw. It was Mikey, but somehow, it wasn’t him at all. His hair was dangling neatly and his glasses were gone. His eyes were shining in the darkness surrounding him in a way Evelyn had not seen them before. He looked completely different.
‘Mikey, what ...’
‘Hi Eve,’ he interrupted her, a grin on his lips.
‘Where have you been? I went to your house and you weren’t there and...’
‘I know. I apologise. Gerard asked me to help him with something and I couldn’t say no. I’m sorry we couldn’t welcome the new year together, but we can celebrate now all the same.’
‘Where are your glasses?’ she asked, frowning her brow.
‘Contacts,’ he said simply. ‘Come, I have a surprise for you,’ he smiled.
Evelyn wasn’t sure why, but she had a strange feeling about this. ‘Ok. Let me get my coat and I’ll be outside in a minute.’
When she came out, Mikey huged Evelyn and pressed his lips to her forehead. ‘Let’s go,’ he said leading her away from her dormitory, from the light, from her life.
‘Where are we going?’ Eve shivered. Mikey was leading her to the woods.
‘You’ll see, baby. You’re gonna love it,’ he answered, not looking back at her, grabbing her hand firmly.
After some more minutes, he turned left behind a tree and a big metallic gate appeared. They looked rusty and the chain keeping them together looked as if it would break just by looking at it hard. Beyond them, the only thing to be seen were big bushes and branches blocking the way.
‘What is this place?’ Eve asked, amazed by the sight.
‘It’s the old cemetery,’ Mikey answered, a big smile on his face, as he looked from the big gates to Eve, whose face had contorted in horror. She had always had issues with death, and cemeteries weren’t her favourite places in the world.
‘Why did you bring me here?’ she asked, backing away from Mikey slowly.
‘Why? What are you talking about? I mean, look at this. It’s perfect! Come.’ He reached out to take her hand but Eve took another step backwards. Mikey looked at her for a few seconds, and when she started running away from him, he started behind her, shouting at her to stop, his voice filled with rage. Evelyn’s heart was racing inside her chest, pounding painfully. What was hapenning with Mikey? It wasn’t him. Something was wrong.
He reached her, grabbed her by the arm and janked her to his body. ‘Where are you going, sweetie?’ he mocked. ‘You weren’t running away from me, now, were you?’
‘Let me go! Help me!’ she screamed until her throat hurt. Tears were streaming down her face, shining under the moonlight.
‘Would you calm down! I just want to show you this place. Now, shut up and come here.’ He dragged her to the iron gates and pushed them open. They creaked a little but gave way easily, giving them access to the forbidden garden inside. Eve was kicking, trying to free herself from Mikey with all her might but she couldn’t do it. All of a sudden he seemed to have grown muscles, because he had never been very strong and now he seemed to be making no effort at all dragging her. He was silently walking through the maze of trees and bushes, driving her away from the light.
After pushing aside several branches which tore her clothes and ripped her skin, he spoke again. ‘Ah, here we are now.’ Eve looked up and saw a mausoleum standing right in front of her, in the middle of a clearing. He positioned himself behind her and started pushing her to the building. When they were at the doors, he covered her eyes with his hands, ‘No peeking, darling. I want it to be a surprise.’ She had started sobbing loudly now, and what she saw inside made her scream in terror.
Three fanged faces greeted her from inside the mausoleum. The three figures were moving slowly towards her, their bodies partally covered. The woman was covered just by her underwear covered in red stains. The two men had ragged jeans on, their chests bear, dripped with blood. Evelyn was crying hard now, her legs failing and letting her drop to the floor. Gerard, Frank and Lauren walked to her, like animals walking towards their wounded pray.
‘What’s going on here?’ she cried to no one in particular. ‘Why do you do this to me?’
‘Shh. Don’t cry now. You should be happy, actually,’ Frank said, his lip ring shining near her face as he took her face in his hands. ‘Your life will be much better now. You’ll join us. We’ll all be together for the eternity.’
‘No, let me go! Please!’ Evelyn pleaded in vain, for not any of them were paying attention to her tears. Gerard grabbed her roughly from an arm and led her to a stone altar.
‘Prepare her,’ Gerard yelled at Lauren. ‘There’s no more time to waste.’
Lauren went to Evelyn and took off her clothes, leaving her only in her underwear. She shivered violently as her skin felt the cold stone behind her. The terror was paralizing her, numbing her brains, not baing able to react. Gerard and Frank were looking at every inch of her body, their eyes shining maliciously and lusty.
‘Well, well. You got yourself a nice piece of meat, little brother,’ Gerard laughed grotesquely. Mikey just smiled from the corner where he had been standing since they had arrived.
‘She’s ready,’ Lauren said, approaching Frank and kissing him deeply, taking his lip ring with her teeth and pulling from it slighlty, drawing a moan from him. ‘Who’s gonna do it?’ she asked, turning to Gerard.
‘I think Mikey should do it. He needs to feed himself after all.’ All of them turned to Mikey and nodded. He had taken off his jacket and was moving to Eve’s side. Her face was red and swollen from all the crying and her hands numb with cold. Mikey got on the altar and pressed his body to hers, making her lie down.
‘Please, Mikey. Don’t do this. What have they done to you?’ Eve cried in terror. Not only was she going to die, or something worse, but the love of her life was gone, for this person on top of her wasn’t Mikey Way at all.
He opened his mouth slighlty, revealing two sharp fangs. She winced at the sight of them, anticipating what was coming. ‘Please, Mikey. I love you. You have to remember me, to remember what we had. Please, come back.’ Evelyn grabbed his face in her hands and kissed him. She pressed her lips to his, making them bleed for the contact with his fangs. But she didn’t care. It was her last hope to make him come back. His eyes were open in amazement. When they broke appart he licked his lips, savouring her blood. A wicked grin spread through his face, making her panic. It hadn’t worked, he wasn’t himself anymore. Their past was lost. Nothing remained. Until something happened. Mikey dropped his face and his eyes turned blank for a second and then looked at her. There was something different there, and she felt it. His eyes weren’t dead anymore, there was life in them, the life that had been taken away from him by the vampires now surrounding them.
‘Mikey?’ she whispered, sobbing slightly.
‘Eve,’ he said, turning his eyes to every direction, taking in the scene. ‘Shit,’ he whispered, then looked at her in the eyes and said, ‘I love you.’ She knew he was back. Somehow he was back.
‘What are you waiting for?’ Frank bellowed impatiently from behind him. ‘Come on, bite her now!’
Mikey’s eyes went from Frank, to Lauren, to his brother’s impatient look, to the window. It was covered with a black curtain, but he could discern the first sunrays coming from outside. He glanced again at the three of them. He looked back again to Evelyn and moved to the side, so that the rest couldn’t see his face. He retreated his fangs and sunk his face to her neck.
‘When I tell you to, scream, and then stay as still as you can. Trust me. I’ll never let them hurt you.’ he breathed in her ear.
‘I know,’ she whispered back.
‘Now.’
Evelyn’s screams filled the room. Mikey moved his head frantically on her neck, as if sucking her blood. The others were awaiting impatiently for him to finish her off. Then, he retreated from her and she lay quiet, as if dead. Mikey mimicked wiping his mouth and turned around. What happened next was so fast that neither realized completely what had happened. Mikey jumped from the altar and threw himself to the three forms behind him. With one swift motion he pushed them out of the door, to the scorching sun outside. The three vampires stared in desbelief at Mikey, who had grabbed hold of a heavy curtain by the doors and managed to stay inside. The next second they had burst into flames and disappeared.
Evelyn ran to Mikey and hugged him with all her might.
‘I’m really sorry,’ he said softly, turning around and caressing her hair.
‘It’s ok, Mikey. It’s all over now.’
‘No, it’s not. I gave you part of my soul the night we made love but it’s not enough. I’ll never be myself again. I’m sorry Eve. I’ll always love you,’ he pressed his lips to hers, tears streaming down his face. ‘I’ll always love you.’ He pushed her aside and staked himself in the heart with a piece of wood from a broken chair.
‘NO!’ Eve cried and tried to stop him. But it was too late. Mikey had disappeared. Evelyn lied on the floor and cried her heart out until there were no more tears inside of her. And then she knew that no matter what happened, Mikey would always be with her, a part of his soul would be hers forever. She got up and started walking to away from that place knowing that someday they would meet again, they would be happy ever after.
