Ville took a deep drag of his cigarette, then another, putting it out in the Vegas ashtray. He lit another, “How old is Jean Claude?”
“Older. Much older.” She snorted, “Of course if you ask him, he was around since the dawn of time.”
“And this means what I think it does?”
She sighed, “Yeah. You’re being awfully calm about this.”
“I’ve been locked in a box for two months. Nothing seems terribly surprising.” Something occurred to him then, “It’s night now?”
“It is.”
“Can we have a clock?”
“I don’t see why not. It’s not as strange as some of the things you’ve asked me to obtain.” She chuckled, “Jean Claude made me go all the way to Las Vegas for your little ashtray you know.”
He wanted to ask her from where, but he was careful not to ask her anything that would get her in trouble. Knowing what he did now, he would be doubly careful, since he had no idea what she and Jean Claude were capable of.
Instead he coughed and said, “Tell me about the two of you then. What’s true, what’s fiction, what have people have no clue about.”
She took a deep breath, “Well, first things first, crosses don’t affect us. Jean Claude says it’s because our kind are older than God. I think it might be because there is no God.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Jean Claude and men like him.”
“But they are such a small part of the world.” He put his hand against the glass and felt the warmth of where she was leaning.
“But they exist, and often are given the power to do terrible things to the rest of it. I have no faith in any kind of higher power that would allow some of the things I’ve seen and done.”
“How about garlic?” Ville asked, changing the subject.
She managed a slight chuckle, “Myth. Along with holy water, hallowed ground, running water and most of the other things that are said to repel us. We can’t shape shift, fly, control minds, animals or things like that. In fact almost everything you’ve ever heard is wrong. We’re stronger, faster, we do seem to get along with most animals, well the predators anyway. And once you get old enough, you know exactly what to do to make people do what you want.”
“What about the sunlight, stake through the heart bit. Silver is werewolves right?”
She actually laughed out loud at that and Ville decided that he would like to hear that sound more often, “I wouldn’t know, as I have never met a werewolf to ask one. A stake though the heart would kill anything, but it’s hard to get it through our skin and bones. It’s hard. Sunlight doesn’t hurt, but Jean Claude romanticizes that he is a creature of the night and must shun the daylight.” He almost heard her roll her eyes.
“But you don’t?”
“No. I don’t really sleep, so I run errands during the day that Jean Claude would rather not bother with.”
“He hasn’t been coming in as much.”
“I think he’s looking for a new pet already. You lot are to smarmy for his tastes. He prefers blind obedience.”
“Well he picked the wrong bunch of guys.”
Suddenly the lights flashed on and Ville caught a brief glimpse of a young looking girl with long, deep brown hair before his vision went white.
“Roxanne! What are you doing down here?” Ville heard Jean Claude bellow.
“I was only checking to see if there was a new list!” Roxanne said hurriedly, “There is.”
“Well I need you upstairs.”
“Yes I’ll come as soon as I have the list.”
Ville looked around as the band began to wake. He waved at them to be quiet.
“Looks like my pets are up!” Jean Claude’s tone changed drastically, “I think that’s a good idea. I’ll be back later tonight for a performance, so maybe you want to warm up.” they heard him leave, leaving the lights on this time.
“Spatula?” Ville heard Roxanne whisper to herself, “What the fuck?” she too left, but not before tapping on the glass as a farewell to him.
“Were you talking to her?” Migé demanded, sitting up and glaring at Ville.
Ville shrugged, “Yes.”
“Why are you speaking to one of the people keeping us here?”
“What’s up mate?” Lily asked as well.
“She’s not keeping us here. She hasn’t got a choice either.” Ville said, uncomfortable defending his actions.
“Oh really?” Migé rolled his eyes.
“Really. She told me that Bam’s offered a reward for information that will lead to our return.”
“I don’t suppose she’s going to help us escape?” Gas said hopefully.
“It’s not that easy.”
“Yeah, it’s much easier to just let us rot in here.” Burton said, pissed off.
Ville looked over at him, startled by what he saw. The skinny keyboard player looked ghastly. His already pale skin had become nearly translucent and he could see the shadow of bone under it. His cheekbones stood out along prominently against the hollow of his cheeks. Lily wasn’t in much better shape, and Gas and Migé had both lost tremendous amounts of weight. Looking down at himself, he saw that his own hip bones stuck out much farther than they used to, and he could see his ribs.
“We really have to get out of here.” He shook his head, trying desperately to formulate a plan.
