“You’re still talking to him!” Charlie exclaimed from behind Sari at the computer desk, startling Dylan, who began to cry, “Oh, I’m sorry honey. I’m so sorry Doll-face. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She cooed and cuddled the baby until she smiled at her, “You’re sill talking to him?” she asked much quieter.
Sari shrugged, “Well he keeps writing me back. Man’s never seen “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” Isn’t that sad?”
“That poor Finnish bastard.” Charlie shook her head sadly.
Sari reached absently for her phone as it rang, thinking it was probably Cari, and answered it, “Hello?” her eyes narrowed, “What?”
Charlie glanced out the window, guessing that it was Dylan’s father on the phone, “Eww dude, the sun just set.”
Sari tried not to giggle, since she was angry, “No you can’t come here. Because you’re not welcome. Yeah, believe it or not there are some people who are sick of your shit and don’t want you around. No. No! Don’t you dare.”
Dylan shrieked something at the Rocky Horror Picture Show poster on the wall of Charlie’s living room.
Charlie yanked her head back as it was a rather loud and unexpected sound. Dylan thought it was funny and reached out to pet her cheek with a huge grin on her face.
“Yes that was her. Charlie’s holding her. Yeah I know. Fucked up isn’t it? You made your choice. Fuck you. You’re insane. Don’t come here.”
Charlie glared at the phone in Sari’s hand, “You tell him if he comes here I’m going to call the cops. Again.”
“Did you hear that?” Sari asked into the phone, “Michael, nobody wants you around.” She laughed and shut the phone, “He hung up.”
“If he comes here again, I swear I’m going to kick him in the face, that thieving son of a bitch.” She stopped herself, “Well, actually, his mom’s kind of nice.”
“Too bad she produced such a terrible son.” Sari said, “’Cuz she’s a sweetheart.”
Charlie sighed and spoke to the baby, “If you turn out like him, I’ll kill you.” She said playfully, “Because that shit is not inherited.”
Mike was Dylan’s father. He was a drug addicted psychopath. Sari had broken up with him a few weeks after Dylan’s birth after he couldn’t be bothered to visit them. He’d been pestering her ever since. Showing up at places when he knew she’d be, fighting her for custody of Dylan, calling her every night for the past four months. He called her more often then than he ever did while they were dating. Mike hated that Charlie still hung out with Sari. They hated each other quite savagely.
Sari sighed and held out her hands for the baby, cuddling her close, “He’s not going to get you sweetie.”
“I’ll kill him first!” Charlie declared, shaking a fist in the air.
Sari turned back to the computer and sent her message.
Sari and Ville had been exchanging emails and talking on the phone for six months. They both felt a little silly about it. Like they were in high school. But they liked each other more than each thought they should have.
It was Dylan’s first birthday and Ville had flown in for the day so he could attend. Sari didn’t know. He’d intended to surprise her and had secretly teamed up with Charlie so he could make it to Sari’s parent’s house.
“Hey, stop looking out the window!” Sari snapped her fingers in front of Charlie’s eyes, “Dylan’s doing cute things out there and you’re missing them.”
Charlie grinned as the doorbell rang, “I think you should answer that.”
“Who the fuck is that? Everyone’s here.” She opened the front door and gasped, “Ville!”
He dropped his duffel bag and hugged her hard, lifting her off the ground, “Surprise.”
Sari squeezed him, “I didn’t know you were coming!” she gave Charlie an accusatory glare.
Charlie only shrugged, “I think I’m going to give the Doll-Face some cake.”
“Not too much.” Sari warned.
“How much is too much really?” Charlie asked, running out of the room.
Sari turned back to Ville, “How did you get here?”
He grinned and shut the door behind them, “The band had some time off, so Charlie and I made arrangements for me to be here.” He looked worried for a second, “Is that alright?”
She smiled hugely, “Yes it’s alright!”
He hugged her again, “So tell me that Dylan hasn’t opened presents yet.”
She shook her head, “Not yet. Presents come after cake. You’re just in time.”
“Great!”
They went out into the backyard where the party was. Sari introduced him around, “Guys this is Ville Valo. Ville, that’s my mom and dad, that’s Dylan’s Auntie Cari and her boyfriend Frank.”
Cari grinned. She knew all to well what was going on and had been in on the plan a bit, “Hi. Nice to meet you after hearing so much about you.” She poked Sari, then caught up a toddler as two ran past her, “This is my baby Sunnie.”
Sari picked up the other wobbly legged girl, “Dylan!”
Ville’s jaw dropped, “She’s huge. She doesn’t look this big in her pictures.” He stroked a finger down her cheek, “Or this beautiful. Happy birthday gorgeous.”
Dylan buried her face in her mom’s neck and giggled.
“I think we’re ready for presents!” Sari’s mom called and the group herded into the center of the patio.
Sari helped Dylan open her presents, even though she was more often interested in the wrapping than the things she received. Mostly clothes and some toys.
“Look what gets to live at Auntie Charlie’s house!” Sari told Dylan when they unwrapped her gift of super annoying blocks that lit up and made noise. She stuck her tongue out at Charlie, who only grinned back, “And what’s this?” she took a package from Ville, wrapped in girly pink paper. It held a baby sized keyboard that made actual music and had none of the annoying accompaniments that usually came with baby instruments, “Oh, this is so nice.” Se smiled at him.
Ville blushed, “She can write songs now.”
Dylan happily pounded the keys, unconcerned about the lack of noise coming from it.
“Maybe in a few years.” Sari laughed, and handed the baby to her waiting grandmother.
He looked around idly, noticing Charlie and Cari slip off, “Is there someplace I can have a smoke?” he whispered, unsure why he whispered it.
“I’ll be right back.” She told her parents and led him over to the side of the house where Charlie and Cari were hastily trying to hide their cigarettes.
Charlie stuck hers in her mouth when she saw it was only them and laughed, “You scared us!”
Ville looked puzzled, “Why would you hide?”
Sari shook her head, “Things go a little easier if we all pretend we don’t smoke around my mom.” She let Ville light her cigarette.
“And this way we’re not around the babies.” Cari pointed out.
“That makes sense.” Ville propped himself against the stucco and inhaled.
“Well, I think we ought to get back.” Charlie said, stubbing out her half smoked cigarette and forcing Cari to drop hers as she dragged her off.
“Since when do you say ‘ought?’ I wasn’t done!” Cari whined as they rejoined the party.
Sari blushed and shook her head, “That was subtle.”
Ville grinned, “She’s funny. You know it was her idea that I come out.”
“Well then I’ll thank her after I kick her ass for not telling me.” She grinned and blew out a stream of smoke, “How long are you in town for?”
“About a week.”
“Oh, that’s good.”
They stood in awkward silence for a few seconds.
“So…” Sari said, and gasped when Ville grabbed her shoulders and leaned down to kiss her, soft and chaste.
He pulled back, “Sorry. I’ve wanted to do that for the last few months.”
Sari brought her fingers to her lips, “Me too.” She said softly, “We should probably get back.”
Ville nodded and pitched his cigarette over the wall into the horse trail. It landed at Mike’s feet.
