Chapter four: Fate Intervenes
The alarm clock next to Pete’s bed went off, Danielle; his girlfriend leaned over and switched the buzzing to the local radio station. She rolled over towards him and kissed him lightly on the lips.
“Pete, baby, I gotta go to work you gonna wake up and say goodbye to me or are you just going to lay there like a log?” frustration evident in her voice.
“Mmmhmm,” he leans over and kisses her sloppily on the check, “have a good day at work” and rolls back over without waiting for her reply. He can hear her stomp around talking under her breathe at him but at 7 in the morning he truly doesn’t care to hear what she has to say.
“Daddy?” and a knock on the door is what woke him completely up. “Daddy can I come in?” He can feel Danielle’s eyes on him as he gets up out of his bed pulls his white shirt on and unlocks the door.
“Hey baby girl, what are you doing up this early in the morning?”
“Daddy, do I have to have a nanny? I think that you’re doing a really good job and if I’m extra nice and listen even better than before than will you just send her home?” He can tell that not only his daughter is awaiting his answer. He looks at Danielle with one of her perfectly waxed eye brow arched patiently waiting for his response.
“No baby, I have accepted that I need some help around here. Maddie is a really nice girl, I promise you, and you’re going to like her.” She sighs, “Come on baby, if you let daddy say goodbye to Danielle, I’ll make you some pancakes for breakfast before Maddie arrives.” She smiles and runs out of the room and makes her way downstairs to the kitchen.
“So Maddie is really nice huh? How well do you know this Maddie character? She could turn out to be trying to use you or your daughter for money, ya know?” Danielle actually seemed concerned.
“Well missy, that’s for me to worry about not you. I love that you worry about me though.” Pete put his arms around her and kissed her on the neck. Pushing him away she smiled at him.
“Well someone has to. I’m going out with Ryland and Alex tonight so don’t wait up. I love you toodles!!!” Waving just her four fingers at him, unsure how to react he waved back thoroughly confused by her behavior. Following her downstairs he watches as she completely ignores Aly, who was waiting patiently for him in the hallway. When is she going to understand that Aly isn’t leaving? Before he could say anything to Danielle there was a knock on the door. Who the fuck is this? Pete thought to himself as he brushed passed Danielle and opened up the door to find two of his band mates with huge smiles on there faces.
“What the hell are you two doing here?” Pete couldn’t help but smile at Andy and Joe.
“Uncle Joe, Uncle Andy you came!!” Aly rushed towards them, jumping into Andy’s arms without hesitation.
“Well munchkin here called us, like 15 minutes ago and begged us to come over and convince you that hiring a nanny is the worst idea Uncle Patrick has ever come up with.” Joe recited word for word what Aly said. As they made their way into the house Danielle walked up to Pete kissed him soundly on the lips, smirked at the other two boys and little girl and walked out. Andy, Joe and Aly all cringed at Danielle’s smirk, none of them understanding why Pete liked her.
“Aly I told you that I won’t fire Maddie, I know you feel like you don’t need her but I know what’s right for you and you have to trust me, please?” He heard the door open and shut behind.
“This is all your fault Uncle Patrick!” she shouted at the newest addition to the house as she ran back upstairs and slammed her door shut. Patrick turned towards his three band mates waiting for some kind of explanation.
“What the hell was that about?” when no explanation came he had to ask. Ignoring his question Pete moved towards the kitchen with the intention of making Aly pancakes.
“So uh, you guys just came over to meet the nanny, didn’t you?”
“Well, Gabe described her has a hottie and we kinda wanted to see for ourselves what you are getting yourself into.” Andy replied with ease.

Fucking 6:00 in the morning, how am I going to be able to function today? Maddie thought to herself as she dragged her non responsive body out of bed and into the bathroom for a shower.
Almost forty five minutes, it took me almost forty five minutes to get ready? When did I turn into such a girl? Looking at herself in the mirror again, surveying the jeans and black tank top she had bought yesterday. I’m supposed to be a nanny not a fucking hooker. Berating herself for what felt like the thousandth time already today she walked out to the kitchen to find her two best friends with smiles that could put the Cheshire cat to shame.
“What the hell are you two all giddy about this morning?” Maddie grumbled into her coffee cup.
“We just can’t believe how much our little girl has grown up in the course of two days, I can actually feel a tear coming on,” Brylee retorted sarcastically. Maddie gave both of them the finger as she fixed her bagel for the ride.
“Seriously guys, I’m out of bed and trying this whole starting new thing, leave me alone with the staring and the whole parenting bit please?” Maddie couldn’t help but snap back at Brylee.
“Calm down, Maddie. It’s only your first day, what’s the worst that could happen?” As she said it Trista realized her mistake.
“Jesus Christ Trista, now everything that could go wrong is going to go wrong. You just had to jinx me you little whore,” Maddie said with a smile on her face. She wrapped her bagel in a paper towel, grabbed her to-go coffee cup and keys all while proceeding out the front door, yelling back before it shut completely. “I love you both, I’ll call the first chance I get today!!”

Pulling up to the house or well mansion the guards let her through without question, parking where she knew she would be out of the way. She rolled up her window, checked her makeup and opened her car door, hearing a loud thump she felt a bout of Déjà vu hitting her. She jumped out of her car and expected to see that dumb blonde girl but instead found her self looking at a flawless brown haired, blue eyed girl that looked outraged. Oh man if looks could kill, Maddie tried smiling but falter at the look the brown hair girl was giving her.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention and I was afraid I was going to be late for my first day.” Maddie started rambling without even knowing it; when she didn’t hear a response she stopped and looked at the girl who was openly staring her down.
“So your Maddie? I’m Danielle, Pete’s girlfriend. I just want you to know that whatever game your trying to play won’t work. Pete’s mine and I’m not letting go until I get a ring on this finger so don’t even think about trying to make you way into his bed.” Maddie couldn’t believe the words that had come out of this Danielle chick’s mouth. She doesn’t even know me.
“Danielle I don’t know what kind of drug you took this morning but I’m only here to take care of Aly. I could careless about Pete and your relationship with him all I care about is Aly and whether she is happy or not.” Danielle rolled her eyes and flipped her brown hair over her shoulder.
“Sure sweetheart whatever you have to tell yourself.” With that she turned on her heel and proceeded to her brand new Cadillac. Kind of confused Maddie stared after her and watched her slide elegantly into the driver’s seat, turn the SUV on, crank the radio and peel out of the driveway, barely waiting for the gates to open and allow her to exit.
“What a bitch,” Maddie couldn’t help but say aloud. “With her fake smile and her stupid coach purse. God I seriously hate L.A.” Shaking her head as she turned to face the mansion in front of her, taking a solid deep breathe she made her way to the door. She didn’t even realize she had been holding her breathe until she rang the doorbell.
“Can I help you?” The youngest member of Fall Out Boy with his unruly fro asked as he opened the door.
“I’m Maddie,” At his confused look she added, “The nanny that Mr. Wentz hired yesterday?” The smile that crept on to his face as he realized who she was kind of freaked her out. He gestured for her to enter and she could tell he was trying not to laugh.
“Well I’m Joe, and everyone is in the kitchen.” She followed as he led the way quietly chuckling.
“Sorry but umm is there some kind of joke that you wanna fill me in on or are you going to continue to pretend as though you’re not laughing?” She couldn’t help but ask, his “concealed” laughter was getting on her nerves. The surprised look on his face is what made her start giggling. “Oh god I didn’t mean to sound rude, I just…look it’s been a really long morning already and I seriously need another cup of coffee and your laughing was just pushing me over the edge.”
“I was only laughing about how much trouble Pete’s getting himself into hiring a nanny that…uh…how do I say this without sound pervish, looks like you.” Before she could give a response they were entering the kitchen and she was staring at all four best friend’s three of which stared back shamelessly and one that didn’t even realize she was there.
“Just be nice ok?” Pete implored of his friends without realizing how quiet they had gotten, “I think Maddie is perfect for Aly, there’s just something about her…”He trailed off as he turned around and meet a pair of perfectly mixed blue-green eyes that hadn’t been there before. Smiling somewhat embarrassedly he flung the pancake he had just finished making onto the plate he had made up for Aly. “I’m sorry; I didn’t even see you there.”
Smiling kindly at him “It’s ok, trust me I’ve heard people say worse things about me. Truthfully, that’s probably the best thing you can say about me when I’m listening, especially when I’m your employee,” She looked as though she was going to continue but instead she closed her eyes and breathed in. All four of the boys looked some what confused by the action until her eyes popped open and she smiled, “Do I smell coffee? Like folders in your cup kind of coffee?” She eagerly awaited for one of them to answer her and when they didn’t she found herself walking deeper into the kitchen, spotting the coffee pot and cups hanging beside it she poured her self some.
“Uh why don’t you just help yourself to some coffee,” Patrick couldn’t help the words that tumbled out of his mouth. Joe, Pete, and Andy glared at him as Maddie laughed rather loudly. They all looked at her in disbelief.
“I’m not normally like this, I promise. I’m usually more subdued, less forward but it’s been a really long morning and I spilt the coffee that I poured this morning before I left to come here before I even got all the way to my car. I just needed this coffee so badly,” She smiled at the amused faces before her and realized she hadn’t introduced herself to two of them. “Oh geez, I’m sorry, how rude of me, I’m Maddie.” She said mostly to Andy and Patrick,
“I’m Patrick and that’s Andy,” He motioned towards the tattooed man beating his drumsticks against the counter top. “And sorry to meet you and rush out but Pete, you ready? We gotta leave now to get to the interview on time.”
Before Pete could come up with an excuse to cancel the interview to stay and make sure Maddie could do her job, She stood up “Oh yea, go, go, go, Everything is going to be ok here,” Looking him in the eye the words slipped out before she could stop them, “I promise, just go.” Promise? After everything that I’ve been through I know promises just hurt people. But she couldn’t take them back now; all she could do was smile. “I’ll find my way around this huge house with help from your daughter.” While making his way to the front door he told her the number that he could be reached at, promised her that he would call as soon as he could. She nodded knowing that it was for his own peace of mind he stated these things and asked where his daughter’s room was located.
“Oh yea, sorry Aly’s room is the second door on the left upstairs. She also hasn’t eaten so if you don’t mind heating up the plate I left in the kitchen for her?” He bit his lip trying to figure out if he forgot anything.
“Pete. Take a deep breathe and remember that I’m here not only because you hired me but also because I want to be here. She’s going to be ok, and so are you.” He smiled and thanked her for her kind words ran upstairs to tell Aly goodbye. She watched as all four of them head out the door and towards the three cars. Andy and Joe riding together, Patrick and Pete driving there own cars. She shut the door and took another deep breathe before heading towards the kitchen to reheat the plate of food.

She had never seen a kitchen so complicated before; she couldn’t even find the microwave at first. As she walked upstairs she thought about what she could do with the little girl, what she liked to do and worried mostly about whether or not Aly would actually like her. She knocked on the door and waited.
“Aly?” she asked after waiting a few minutes, “Can I come in?” Not waiting for a response she opened the little girl’s door and peeked inside. She put the plate down on the night table. She looked around in awe; this was definitely a little girl’s room, a spoiled little girl. Pink, purple and yellow butterflies, fireflies and flowers covered the room, pictures of the little girl w/ her dad, picture with her dad’s band mate’s, pictures with other bands but only one of her with a woman, Vicky-T.
“Aly, my names Maddie, I’m the nanny your dad hired, I know he was just up here saying goodbye. Could you please come out and let me know your ok?” She searched every where she thought the little girl would hide in her room and when she didn’t find her in there she moved on to the other rooms in the house. A huge red and gold room that looked unlived in; empty, the blue room two doors down; also empty. Her heart started beating and her mind turned to what happened with Tonya. Calm down, she didn’t go outside just keep looking. She decided to start again downstairs and in the backyard, every room was empty as was the pool, the guest house and the hot tub. She ran back up the stairs and researched the little girl’s room, the blue room, the red and gold room, continued on to the green bathroom, the white floral room and the bathroom that accompanied it. All that was left was the master bedroom, Pete’s room.
Staring at the door she couldn’t help the nerves that went through her, slowly she pushed the door open to find a black and white themed room, with a huge king sized bed in the middle, it was all clean and sharp edges with beautiful black and white pictures of his little girl, a woman that looked like she could be his mom, his band mate’s and his girlfriend. She walked towards the door on the left side of the huge room that had windows from floor to ceiling and opened it. She found his bathroom; the bathroom had the same clean sharp look to it but also had clothes all over the floor. Turning away from the huge shower she walked back out the door and headed towards the other door which as she had guessed was the closet. She walked through the also huge closet; moved some of the clothes to look behind them and walked back out trying not to invade Pete’s privacy. At this point she had become frantic, she walked out of his room and started making her way down the stairs but before she could get all the way down her already shaking knees gave out, she tumbled slightly and landed hard on her back. Pulling her self into a sitting position, she imagined everything that could have happened to the little girl, every bad and horrible thing her vivid imagination could come up with she saw with her eyes closed.
“Maddie? Aly? It’s Patrick, Pete forgot something and I was afraid if he came back he wouldn’t leave,” That’s when he saw her, slightly crumbled on the steps trying to hide the fact that she had been crying, “Oh my god, are you ok? Where’s Aly? Is she ok?” Although the terror he felt was nothing compared to the terror that Maddie was experiencing; he could feel it nonetheless.
“Oh god, I’m horrible. I don’t know where Aly is. I went upstairs to find her, she wasn’t in her room and I check everywhere. I kept telling myself to calm down, that she wasn’t Tonya and she wasn’t outside but I began to get frantic. I checked everywhere, every room downstairs, every room upstairs including the master bedroom, I even check outside at the pool, the hot tub and even the guest house out back for god’s sake but she wasn’t there.” For the first time since he had arrived she looked up at Patrick. “That’s when my mind started going into overdrive. Every bad thing imaginable that could happen to a little girl has gone through my mind and I keep playing every optional hiding place over and over again in my head and I know she’s not there because I checked.” There she had admitted it, every fear she had about going into this job had come true.
“Pete didn’t tell you did he?” Patrick was fuming; he could barely control the anger that was bubbling under the surface. At the confused look she gave him, he got his answer. Patrick took Maddie’s hand and led her back up the stairs and towards the master bedroom.
“Patrick I told you I already looked in here,” She stated as he opened the door and walked towards the closet door. “And in there. Oh god please don’t tell Pete I was in his room I don’t want him to think I’m some kind of nutcase.” It was almost like Patrick didn’t hear her, he just kept walking towards the very back of the closet that was probably as big as Maddie’s bedroom and closet combined at her house. He pulled open a small cabinet that was position slightly behind where most of Pete’s hoodies were hanging.
“Aly, baby, it’s Patrick, Pl…” Before he could finish the rest of his sentence a child like blur flew out from the cabinet and latched her arms around his neck. “Aly, listen to me baby,” She loosened her grip and looked at him, “This is Maddie, she’s your nanny. Aly stop turning away, she’s nice and she’s only here to help you not to harm you. Please, Aly do this for your dad and I just try ok?” The curious cat that had been sleeping inside of Maddie awakened at the words not to harm you? Who could possibly want to harm this little girl? But for the sake of the little girl she didn’t ask any questions just offered her a smile and a hand to grab. Hesitantly the little girl placed her small hand into Maddie’s larger one. What the hell is going on?
“Hi Aly, you scared me there.” Maddie made sure that Aly could see and hear the seriousness in her voice and body language. “Are you hungry?” At the little girl’s nod “Well your daddy made you some pancakes and eggs, there downstairs in the kitchen. Why don’t you go eat.” Without having to be told twice she ran downstairs.
Turning towards Patrick she raised her eyebrow at him, curiosity written upon her face, “Harm her? Who harmed her? And why haven’t I been told anything about it?” She suspected before even asking him the questions that he wasn’t going to answer them.
That suspicion was confirmed when Patrick shook his head, “That isn’t my place to say. Your going to need to talk to Pete about it, and it’s not something that he likes to talk about so be ready for a fight.” With that he turned and walked out the door without waiting for her to reply.

Patrick was furious when he walked into the room where they were waiting for the journalist, everyone could feel it. Without a word he walked up to Pete and slammed his back against the wall.
“How fucking irresponsible of you Wentz. You didn’t tell her that Aly had issues with women? Not even one simple sentence? I found the poor girl crying on the stairs because she couldn’t find Aly.” He saw the scope of emotions run across Pete’s face, anger at being thrown against a wall, worry for Aly, defeat over the words that Patrick spoke and final the guilt of not telling Maddie settled upon his face. “Don’t Pete don’t say anything to me. I told you to tell her, I told you that she had to know and you ignored me yet again. I’m warning you, I didn’t tell her anything, I told her to talk to you. And you’re going to tell her because if you don’t then I fucking will.”
Before Pete could respond the journalist walked in, needless to say there wasn’t one real smile that day, not from the band mates or the journalist who could feel the obvious tension between the four men.
