A/N: Okay, so I suppose you guys deserve a bit of an author's note after such a huge absence, so here it is. First off, deepest apologies. School is ... well, school. I'm sure you all know how crazy it can get, so no need to waste any more time with that subject. Next, another reason I haven't updated, was my birthday (and other celebrations) over the past week. Also I've been fighting with writer's block (and also spastic spurts of ideas for either other stories, or much later chapters ... I also had a concept for another fic (but won't post until I wrap up Summerset and get rolling again with Family Traditions). And lastly, yes, I completely understand how freakishly long this chapter is, but I just couldn't figure out a good splitting point for it, so I just kept typing away until I just now finished it.
Without any more useless drivel (at least until the end), here's the new chapter! *hugs* Read, Enjoy, and Review!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Frank walked back into their house carrying an armload of Styrofoam take-out plates and bags of food he brought home from the restaurant. He had made sure to grab plenty of chicken marsala and tiramisu for Cara, knowing that they was her favorite dishes. “I come baring food! Hello!” He deposited the food on the counters of the kitchen, calling out through the house. He didn’t hear the sounds of the television, which was a little suspicious given that Gee didn’t have to work, and Cara would normally be watching the crime shows that were on right now.
There was no response and Frank began to get a little worried. After all, with as many people living in the house as there was, it was never quiet. Even at night there was always some noise, whether it was the music coming from Cara’s room, to Gee’s snoring. It was just never quiet. So the sudden quiet was a little frightening. As he walked into the living room, he frowned seeing that it was empty. That wasn’t good. He shrugged and turned to head back to the kitchen and jumped as he rounded the corner.
“Smells great. What did you bring us, Frankie?” Mikey was already sifting through the bags and plates on the counters. Frank walked over and slapped Mikey’s hands away. After all, it wasn’t polite to eat without Cara and Gee there ... well, at least Cara he would wait on. Gee could fend for himself. But he would be a gentleman and wait for Cara before they ate.
“Not yet, pig. Where are Gee and Cara? ... And the chicken marsala and tiramisu are for Cara. So don’t touch.” Frank grabbed up the two plates that contained the dishes in question, and pulled them back out of the reach of Mikey.
Mikey laughed at Frank’s mention of the two dishes being particularly for Cara. “Trying to woo her with food again? At least you managed to snatch her favorites. But please, keep the noise from your impending sexcapades to at least a low roar. And keep it in your rooms. I really don’t want to see you two going at it like rabbits all over the house.”
Laughing at Mikey’s teasing, Frank started to sort out the remainder of the food he had brought home. “You didn’t answer my question. And my private entertainments are none of your business. Besides, you know Cara’s been adamant about the relationship stuff. I just thought I would give her some comfort food since she had a bad day in that god-forsaken town. Nothing sexual in that at all.”
“Yeah right, Frank. But she had a benefit she was supposed to work tonight and she took Gee with her for support and just to have another friendly face. I would have gone, but she needed someone not likely to be recognized. Plus I think Gee needed a break of such. Ooh, what’s this?”
Frank frowned at the mention of Cara having to work tonight, especially after she seemed to have been a little out of sorts earlier. Although Frank’s attention was soon enough pulled back to keeping Mikey out of the food until Gee and Cara got back home for the night. “Damnit, Mikey! I told you to stay out of the food until they get back!”
Mikey lauged triumphantly when he heard a car door shut from the driveway. “Ha ha! I win! Now to grab some of this and see if you’re trying to poison us again.” He grabbed up a fork and stole a mouthful of the pasta in the plate before him, rushing off as Frank hopped at him to chase him down.
Gerard walked around to the passenger door of Cara’s car and gently pulled her out, picking her up into his arms and shutting the door before starting for the back door of the house. He noticed Frank’s car back and smiled. That meant food that was more substantial than the few crackers he had managed to get at the benefit. Cara muttered something in her sleep before becoming still again, just as they reached the door. Gee reached out with a finger and rang the doorbell, unable to get to his keys at the moment.
Cara had panicked after seeing the Reverend Lovegood at the gala, and had been nearly inconsolable backstage. Bob had finally resorted to leaving her backstage in the music room and rushing out to find Gerard. Gee hadn’t minded being pulled away from the annoying drone of Cara’s boss going on and on about the various achievements of the orchestra and why donating would be a worthwhile investment. But when he had gotten back to the music room with Bob, the sight scared him more than anything else. Cara had wedged herself between two of the metal filing cabinets and was staring blankly at the door as if in a trance. As soon as the two boys had managed to get her out from between the cabinets, she muttered something about being tired and sat down at the desk and promptly fell asleep.
It was all weird and frightening, and both boys had spent the next several minutes panicking over the sudden strange behavior of Cara. She had never fallen asleep at a gala, no matter how boring and repetitive they were, she never slept through them. So for her to fall asleep, particularly in the music library room was a big deal. Bob and Gerard both agreed that it might be best to try and get her home as quickly as possible. So Bob had went off to talk to their boss while Gerard tried to get Cara to wake up enough to get her out to the car so they could leave for the night.
Finally after much more hassle than either of them would have liked, Bob managed to convince Sammy that Cara was sick and needed to go home right away and Gerard managed to get Cara out to her car safely, although she instantly fell back into the almost dazed stupor of the sleep that she had been in while in the music room. Bob had promised to call Gee as soon as he got home after the benefit to check on Cara.
“Mikey, Frank, can you come help me get Cara in? Come on, you assholes!” Gee kicked at the door with his shoe, only to jump a little as it opened right after he kicked it, revealing a suddenly worried Mikey. He glanced over the two of them and quickly pulled the door back so Gee could get through.
“What the fuck happened to Cara?!”
Gerard sighed and continued walking through the kitchen and into the living room and gently laid her down on the couch before turning back to his brother with a finger over his lips. “Shh, Mikey. Calm down. She just fell asleep is all. So I brought her back. It was honestly nothing.”
“Cara fell asleep? You mean at the banquet? ... Is she sick? I mean, does she have a fever or something?” Mikey was instantly panicking, having been to enough benefits with Cara to know how she acted at them. If there was one thing that she never did, it was fall asleep.
Cara suddenly sat up and glanced around terrified of what she might see, and a little confused and disoriented. As she glanced between her three housemates and their worried faces, she instantly knew something was wrong and burst into tears. Mikey looked at her as if she had sprouted a second head, Gerard looked more relieved than anything else. And Frank just looked confused.
“What’s going on guys? Could someone please explain all this to me? Gee, what happened at the benefit? I didn’t even have that much to drink. So I couldn’t hav passed out. Why don’t I remember anything?”
Frank covered the short distance between him and the couch and quickly pulled Cara to him, wrapping his arms around her as she sobbed. “Shh, Cara, babe. Everything will be perfectly alright. You just fell asleep for a moment and Gee brought you home. From what I hear, you have had quite a day.”
As Frank moved to comfort Cara, Mikey grabbed his brother and pulled him off towards the kitchen. As soon as they were far enough out of earshot, Mikey turned to Gee with a frown. “Gee, what the fuck happened to Cara?! She never falls asleep at benefits, NEVER! It doesn’t matter how boring they are. And for her not to even stay for the orchestra? Something’s wrong, Gee.”
“I don’t know, Mikey. I mean, first she’s chatting with some old guy with Bob, then the next second they disappear and Bob comes and tells me something’s wrong with Cara. We found her hiding in the music library room. Don’t you think I know how Cara is at benefits?! Of course I know something’s wrong.” Gerard ran a hand over his face with a barely audible sigh.
Of course he was worried about Cara. After all, he had always worried about her and looked after her as best as he could since Mikey had first introduced them years ago. Gee knew almost instinctively from the first meeting that Cara needed as much love and as many friends as she could get. He also knew that Mikey had been infatuated with Cara for years as well, although his brother was as likely to do something about it as a rock was to suddenly sprout a mouth and start talking to him. Gee had given up on pushing Mikey to do something, as he had gotten tired of hearing Mikey deny everything then mope around for up to a week later. It was all rather annoying, but he supposed he couldn’t complain completely, given his own relationship status.
“Gee, are you even listening to me?!” Mikey’s snappish comment suddenly brought Gee’s attention back to the present conversation. Mikey must have noticed his vacant expression because his frown deepened, if that was possible, and pulled his glasses off and rubbed his hands over his eyes. “Of course you’re not. You’re probably trying to think of some plot of yours again. If you’re going to keep up with the plots, I’m going to leave.”
Gerard rolled his eyes at Mikey’s almost girlish semi-whining. He had grown accustomed to his brother’s antics and such over the years, and so the whining ploy did nothing for him any more. Besides, they were all adults, so why did he act so childishly over certain things? It was more than a little annoying, and to be honest, sometimes he wondered about his brother.
But Gerard didn’t have to worry about his brother’s temperamental stage as Mikey shrugged off his ignoring and walked back off towards the living room, no doubt worried about Cara. Gee sighed and ran his hands under the tap water, splashing a bit of cold water over his face, for no real reason, aside from the fact that it always seemed to calm him down.
Cara calmed down slightly as Frank pulled her closer to him, having always been a sort of person to calm with the touch of loved ones. And no matter how odd or unique Frankie was, he was still a loved one. Well, perhaps a little more so than she might like to admit. After all, she had always tried to stay neutral among her housemates, knowing that if she were to have any relationship with one of the guys over the others, they might not take it offensive personally, but she would feel bad on her own. But all her hopes of staying neutral didn’t mean that she was able to keep herself from thinking such things against her better judgment.
“Cara, it’s okay now. I’ve got you and nothing is going to happen to you now. I promise you that, Penguin.” Frank whispered as he smoothed the hair back away from her face so he could look into her eyes so that he could be certain that she was alright. He had always had a soft spot for girls’ tears, and Cara was most certainly not an exception. “Penguin, listen to me, please stop the tears. You know how I can’t handle it when you cry.”
Cara laughed as Frank pushed the hair from her face and smiled the childish smile that always seemed to make her feel better, even when she was having the worst day ever. She leaned her head against his chest as he held her tightly in his arms, her eyes slowly closing. She felt safe around her housemates, and knew that they would do everything in their power to keep her safe.
“Cara Lyn.”
At the sudden reappearance of the voice of her mother, Cara’s eyes popped open and she jumped up, instinctively wrapping her arms around her knees, pulling them to her chest, oblivious to anything else. “No, no, no, no, no. Not again!” She shook her head, tears already streaming down her cheeks again.
“Rock-a-top Summerset mountain. Dance in the autumn gold leaves. If you fall, I’ll be there to pick you up again.”
Cara heard the familiar lullaby that her mother had sang Janie while she was growing up, as it was a sort of traditional lullaby for Summerset, and knew that something was seriously wrong. Although she knew that it was somehow implausible that the voice of her mother was singing to her, something made it seem almost realistic and comforting. For the first time in several years, she almost felt the urge to call her stepdad and talk.
“Cara, what’s wrong?” Frank raised an eyebrow as Cara seemed to panic and glance around the living room, as if looking for something. He was getting even more worried than before, and was starting to seriously wonder if there was something wrong with Cara more than he had first thought. “Cara?”
“The boy is just using you for one thing, Cara Lyn. It’s in his mind even now.”
Cara frowned hearing what the voice of her mother was saying. She turned back to Frank with her eyes wide, unconsciously moving away from him. Of course she knew that Frank had always liked her more than as just a friend, but why would such a thing come up? After all, with all the things that had been going on, she hadn’t even thought about her relationship status, or lack thereof.
“Cara, come here. What’s wrong?” At Frank’s words, Cara seemed to unconsciously acknowledge the truth behind the voice. She started to shake her head, tears streaming down her face. She stood and slowly started backing away from him towards the stairs leading up to her room. She let out a small squeal when she bumped into Mikey who was just coming back out of the kitchen.
“He’s after you as well, Cara Lyn. You’re not safe with them. You need to come home.”
The mysterious voice’s words caused Cara to sob even harder, which startled Mikey, who trying to help, put an arm around her shoulders. After hearing her mother’s voice warn her against the boys she lived with, Cara jumped away from the touch with a scream, running up the stairs and slamming the door to her room and throwing herself on her bed, her hands tightly grasped over her ears.
A sudden knocking on her door caused Cara to jump with a startled squeak. She slowly sat up and turned to the door. “Who is it?”
“It’s just Gee. I was just bringing your purse up for you, babe. You just missed a call on your cell phone is what reminded me that it was still downstairs. ... I’m not going to ask you about what happened or what exactly went on down there, but I’m just going to leave your purse here and hope everything is okay. You should know we would all do anything for you.”
Cara felt a small smile slide across her face at Gee’s voice. He always knew how to make her feel better, even if she adamantly argued that she was fine. Plus when he mentioned not questioning what happened or such, she couldn’t help but feel a little better about it. Until the tinkling laughter of her mother’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“They’re all the same, Cara Lyn. These city boys are dangerous. Come back home to Summerset. I would approve of our boys.”
Cara fell back onto the bed, tears running down her face again. The thing that startled her out of her almost hysterical sobbing was the sound of her cell phone ringing from her purse outside of the door. She stood and walked over to the door and pulled it open and grabbed her purse and shutting and locking the door back. Just as she managed to dig out her cell phone, it stopped ringing and went to her voicemail.
She quickly checked it and saw that her missed calls had been from her younger sister and from Ray. Now that was strange. Firstly, Janie never called unless she wanted something. And secondly, what was Ray calling for? Unable to keep her curiosity at bay, Cara quickly called Ray back first and sat back on her bed while it rang.
“Hello? Hey, Cara. How are you doing?” Cara could hear the smile in Ray’s voice even through the phone, and wondered what had him so happy. After all, she could certainly use some of his happiness with the day she had been having.
“Just come back home and you’ll be happy again.”
Cara ignored the stubborn voice of her mother and merely concentrated on her conversation. “I’m doing okay. I had a bit of a rough spot at work tonight, after I was late.”
“I’m sorry. Did I make you late by keeping you for lunch?” She smiled at Ray’s thoughtfulness. It made her feel good to know that she still had at least one friend from Summerset who she could talk to again. Because no matter how she might want to deny it, she knew that somewhere in her heart, she missed the town.
“No, I just forgot that I had to work the benefit tonight was all. ... So, to what do I owe the honor of your call?” Cara wasn’t particularly good at being blunt, but she was getting tired from the long day combined with the stress that she had been under.
Ray paused before continuing. “Oh nothing really. I just thought I would call and make sure that you got back safely. But it sounds like you’re tired, so now that I know you made it safely to where you’re staying, I will let you go to bed. Sweet dreams, Cara.”
“Thanks, Ray. And I’ll try to call you sometime tomorrow maybe, when I’m not tired or such. And thanks again for lunch, I had fun.” Cara smiled as she heard Ray’s thoughtfulness again. Yes, she had missed this about her friends from back home.
“Alright then. I’ll be anxiously awaiting your call again, Cara. Goodnight.”
“Night, Ray.”
Cara closed her cell phone and put it on the charger before quickly stripping out of her dress and pulling on her most comfortable pair of pajamas and crawling into bed, glad that she wouldn’t have to be at work until later in the morning, as they always had a bit of a break after benefits. The last thought she had before she fell asleep was of her mother’s voice and the old familiar lullaby.
~*~
Ray grinned to himself as he hung up his phone before quickly picking it back up and dialing another number. He hummed lightly to himself as he waited for the answer. At least it had seemed that Janie had been right about Cara. He had to admit that he had always been fond of the younger girl, ever since he had first met her, having grown up with Cara for years.
“Hey, you’ve reached me, Janie Morgan! I can’t get to the phone right now, so just leave me a message and I’ll try to get back to you. Love ya!”
Ray smiled at the bubbly teenager’s voicemail greeting. After the beep he told her to just call him back when she could. Knowing Janie, she was probably just keeping her cell phone on silent to keep from letting her dad know how late she stayed up. Either that or she was on the line talking to her boyfriend. Janie would call him when she got the message, so for now he could grab something to eat. But as soon as he finished heating up a plate of leftover lasagna, the phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Raymond, good to hear from you. I was wondering if you wanted to join me and the family for dinner this weekend. Janie mentioned you talking to Cara again, and we thought that you might like to drop by for a meal, like we used to do all the time.”
Ray bit his lower lip as he contemplated the offer from Cara’s stepfather. Sure he had gone over for meals and such more times than he could remember over the years, but he hadn’t been over since Cara’s mother and brother had been killed. “Um, sure I guess. It depends on when I’m meeting with Cara for dinner.”
“You’re having dinner with Cara? That’s nice. I didn’t know you two were talking again. How’s she doing?”
For some reason Ray seemed to feel like Clyde was interrogating him. But it soon enough passed along. “Yeah, I ran into Cara today and had lunch and asked her to dinner this weekend. Haven’t you or Janie talked to her lately? I thought she mentioned something about Janie talking to her.”
“Yeah, Janie still calls Cara, but I didn’t know that she was in town today. I’ll have to ask Janie tomorrow morning before school then. Well, I suppose I’ll let you get to bed then, Raymond. Call me and let me know about dinner.”
“Sure thing, Clyde. G’night then.”
As soon as Ray hung up the phone, he went about getting ready for bed, having the sneaking suspicion that there was more to that phone call than met the eyes. Although he wouldn’t know how much, until all the things unraveled of course, but that was still a little ways in the future. The future for all of them, in fact.
